News from Australia, 9 July
Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney has signalled the four key priorities for the Voice to parliament she outlined will not be enshrined in legislation and will be “based on trust” instead.
2. Protesters in Darwin are attempting to prevent the movement of a powerful on-shore drilling rig to the Beetaloo Basin, highlighting concerns about the environmental impact of fracking.
The Beetaloo Basin is a highly energy resource-rich area, with an estimated 500 trillion cubic feet of gas, but the use of shale fracking in the region is yet to be trialled.
Despite the recent lifting of a five-year moratorium on fracking in the Northern Territory, environmental, Indigenous, and farming groups remain worried about the potential consequences, particularly on groundwater reserves.
3. Conservation groups and traditional owner groups have reintroduced the eastern quoll, a previously-extinct marsupial, to western Victoria. The marsupial, which is only found in the wild in Tasmania, became extinct on the Australian mainland in the 1960s.
Scientists released seven quolls onto a sheep station in Dundonnell last year and dozens more have been reintroduced to regional NSW. This week, the Eastern Maar people helped bring another 12 quolls to the area. The reintroduction process took place during NAIDOC week, a time to recognize the significance of First Nations people and cultures. The hope is that this project will lead to the survival of the quoll on the mainland.

It's NAIDOC Week in Australia, acknowledging and celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. You can learn some of their queer stories with Archiving the Aboriginal Rainbow, a queer Indigenous-run blog collecting and sharing contemporary and historical audio, images, articles, and art to celebrate Australia’s Indigenous LGBTIQ, Sistergirl, and Brotherboy communities.

Decorated group with shields and boomerangs, Cardwell, 1890s by State Library of Queensland Via Flickr: Creator: Unidentified. Location: Cardwell, Queensland. Description: This photograph shows a small group of men holding shields, boomerang and Nulla Nulla, with two Aboriginal women sitting on the ground. Most of the men have cicatrices [scarring], with two men wearing headbands, one with an armlet and one with a necklace, This group of people have been identified as the Cardwell Aboriginal group, known as Girramay. Body decoration and shield designs differ between Aboriginal Tribes and topographic location. The ceremony performed would depend on the body decoration used and the roles of the people in the ceremony. The fluffy body art used by several of the males in this photograph is from bird down and plant down, with animal fat applied as glue. News from Australia, July 2, 2023.
The 2023 National NAIDOC Week Awards in Brisbane honored Black excellence and community leadership.
Kelvin Kong, Australia's first Indigenous surgeon, has won the prestigious Personality of the Year award. Creative Talent Award winner Rachel Perkins used her acceptance speech to call on Australians to vote 'yes' to Voice to Parliament. Other winners included members of girl group The Sapphires and a professional netball player.
2. Thousands of people have rallied nationwide to support the Indigenous voice to parliament, despite recent polls showing a decline in the yes vote.
Organizers are hopeful that momentum will continue to build, as conversations about the referendum are happening in various settings across the country.
The opposition leader, Peter Dutton, criticized big companies for donating to the yes campaign, while the Liberal party campaigns for the no vote due to unanswered questions about the voice advisory body.
3. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has reached its 10-year anniversary and is servicing over half a million Australians, but reforms are necessary to ensure its long-term sustainability.
ARUMA, a major disability provider and charity, has emphasized the need for the government to work in partnership with the sector to implement sustainable reforms, addressing workforce shortages and expanding disability services outside of the NDIS.
NDIS Minister Bill Shorten has outlined six key areas of systemic reform, including increasing the NDIA workforce, controlling costs, improving participant experience, and targeting fraudulent activities, while rejecting simplistic approaches like co-payments or means testing.
4.Parents are being urged to get their children vaccinated against the flu as cases continue to rise among children in Australia.

Imma be going to a local community gathering hosted by the Quandamooka Festival today.
Thought I’d retweet this and post this on Tumblr to show non-Indigenous Australians how can help show support for their Indigenous communities in a respectful way as told by Bundjalung woman Vanessa Turnbull-Roberts.

Today I witnessed the Galup VR experience at Boola Bardip. I felt it was important to get educated on local boodja, especially during NAIDOC Week. I would strongly recommend the film as an important, beautiful, and heart-breaking truth-telling meeting. It's free until the 17th of July. 🌱🌞🌱 The irony was that I noticed Woodside's name emblazoned on the side of the building when Woodside is currently building the Burrup Hub, Australia's most polluting fossil fuel project on unceded land that will endanger the sacred Murujuga rock art. Can we please stop giving Woodside social licence? @wamuseum @xrwawesternsuburbs @xrebellionwa should know about this. #naidocweek #woodside https://www.instagram.com/p/Cfvak2YvYrL/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I come from Palawa People ❤️🖤💛 and it’s #naidocweek so I’m going to show up, which is what this year’s #naidocweek message is all about: GET UP, STAND UP, SHOW UP 💪🏻 It’s hard standing up for what you believe in; our culture is full of criticism. It’s hard getting up and doing something different; our culture loves to tear people down. It’s hard showing up for something more than ourselves and it’s hard to choose community; we’ve been taught to isolate, go it alone, and suffer in silence. It’s hard. Change is hard. Acknowledgement is hard. Truth is hard. Honesty is hard. Offering instead of taking is hard. Listening instead of talking is hard. But it IS worth it. This is the culture we need to change. The ‘all about me’, when it should be ‘all about us’. Our community. Our collective impact. Our power to create positive change. Challenge yourself this #NAIDOC week and do something to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We rise by lifting others. I’m celebrating incredible First Nations businesses all week over at @themoralmanual and today, I’m sharing this beautiful artwork by @mulganai👌🏻 I’m also researching more, educating myself more, and trying to understand more. Conversations create change, so I’d love to encourage you to have a conversation with anyone you know about what @naidocweek is all about. #GETUPSTANDUPSHOWUP (at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfnfmTjLcRq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
