[Review] NAMUAMIDABUTSU! -UTENA- – Episode 1

What’s it about? Heavenly deities Taishakuten and Bonten have descended upon the mortal realm to save it from its earthly desires after Dainichi Nyorai takes a leave of absence. The two buddha are ready to cleanse the earth and help it towards a period of enlightenment, but the 12 other heavenly deities are telling the two to chill out.

Thus have I heard that NAMUAMIDABUTSU! -UTENA- is now available for streaming and I was compelled to watch. A more pious adherent to Buddhism may take this show as a challenge, a boulder in the path that must be overcome or detoured around, but I’m simply announcing this is the end.

We are in “mappo,” a degeneration or corruption of Buddhist law. While Buddhism may teach that our earthly desires (translated as “vices” in the show) are to be overcome, NAMU only seeks to amplify them with hot boys. It is worth noting there are a total of 108 worldly desires and sexual lust is one of them.

And though the pretty boys might be the most apparent transgression in a series about a religion that often teaches austerity and mindfulness, there are plenty of other issues that made me stop and ponder if a Buddha would necessarily follow what this show is doing. Would a Buddha “save” the earth by actively eradicating desire? Does simply cleansing the corrupted earthly desire from a person actually help them when the root cause of that desire is never actually addressed? Would a Buddha need or use a microwave?

Well folks, the time has come again. With basically every spring premiere on the books, and me having watched them all in some misguided pursuit of cartoon enlightenment, we can at last run down the hits, misses, and egregious humanitarian crimes of the spring anime season. Though to be honest, the international tragedies were actually in pretty short supply this time – this was a premiere season…

Oh yeah, I also watched Namuamidabutsu! -Utena- a while back and that was... uh, something. Not THAT Utena, that one knows what it’s doing.

Basically the plot is two bickering idiots get called down from heaven to help the Buddahs (Bodhisattvas?) fight slime monsters made of mortal vice. Well that WOULD be the plot if those bickering idiots weren’t really called down to because the main Buddha wants them to Just Kiss Already- actually not that either, that would be interesting.

They actually get called down to... well they just faff around in track suits for twelve episodes learning about all of the dozen Buddahs, each one of them displaying a masterfully crafted Singular Character Trait, except for the female one who’s character is “likes pink things“ I guess?

Also there’s a villain who steals the one Buddah’s Power to Control the Universe and has Bickering Idiot #2′s old best friend under their thumb because Tragic Backstory With Dead Child, and there’s some battles until Main Buddah decides to stop pretending to be kidnapped and breathe on the villain to crush them. So there was a plot somewhere in all that faffing around but ho boy was the prety character designs the only thing it had going for it.

It was one of those where I wasn’t sure why I kept watching but it was only twelve episodes and it was kinda like fascination at how little it could do with so much.
