BIPOC Bookstore Feature: Freedom to Read
Meet our Summer BIPOC Bookstore feature: Freedom to Read, a Native-led program of Red Media based in Tiwa Territory (Albuquerque, NM). It aims to alleviate the financial and societal obstacles that create book scarcity in and around Indigenous communities. Support their program by purchasing books for their wish list at Massive Bookshop! Q: We're so excited to learn about Freedom to Read! Can you tell us a little bit about who your program serves, and how your partnership with Massive Bookshop works? How does Freedom to Read fit into your work with Red Media?
A: Thank you for featuring Freedom to Read! With Freedom to Read, we seek to alleviate some social and financial barriers that create book scarcity by offering free books. We prioritize Native people, but we also supply free books to community spaces wanting to highlight Native politics and history. Monetary donations go towards purchasing requested titles through Massive Bookshop. Additionally, Massive Bookshop helped us set up a book wish list on their website, where people can donate a book at a discounted price for Freedom to Read to distribute. The book wish list is a nice visual of which books Native people are requesting, and offers a vehicle of support. It’s genuinely steeped in solidarity. Q: Your program creates literary access for incarcerated Native community members, as well as libraries and schools. Have you heard back from any readers about their experience receiving books from your program? Are your participants able to make requests for your booklist?
A: Honestly, we’ve been a bit slow getting books to incarcerated people because it’s something we want to get right, and Freedom to Read is still relatively young, so we want to have more developed principles. At the moment we rely on knowledgeable people for guidance to point us toward those with a solid structure for book distribution inside prisons.
In 2022, we received a letter from an incarcerated Native person expressing their thoughts and gratitude about two books we donated, The Red Deal: Indigenous Action to Save Our Earth and Red Nation Rising: From Bordertown Violence to Native Liberation, which Noname Book Club distributed. It was such a pivotal moment indicating that these books are needed. Earlier this year, we donated books to the Nambe Pueblo Tewa Language Department, and they sent us a card thanking us for providing culturally relevant resources. It was so rewarding to know that others can experience joy from a program like this, and it’s reciprocal.
We are currently trying different approaches, figuring out what works, and people are still learning about Freedom to Read. Next year, we aim to open communication for people to request books for themselves or their relatives. Q: Your book list spans titles from children's picture books, to poetry, academic texts, and more. How did you staff select these titles in particular?
There have been very few instances where I’ll add a book I think is essential for people to read. Still, for the most part, all of the books we have on our wish list have been requested or recommended by librarians, workers, relatives, professors, and organizers wanting politics, history, and stories by Native authors and authors from oppressed communities in their space. Our booklist is carefully curated and adjusted to meet the needs of the people.

source: I was a fucking victim of it
Can't believe NaNoWriMo just did this, but literally.
#shut the fuck up#nano yearly wiped their forums on the ywp due to not having the server space to support more data#but it also meant grooming was conveniently wiped from the site#but also. there’s multiple videos and interviews on it#DESPITE the fact that moderators did everything in their power to silence the kids#so shut the fuck up#and do your research#and stop being a goddamn piece of shit and mocking grooming victims

cw: a little obscene, nostalgic feeling, cute, sweet love, some jokes about age, suggestions for sugar daddy x sugar baby behavior
a/n: I didn't tell you, but I finally got out of the unemployment statistics and this week didn't help me feed the creativity for what I have open, I sketched a few things here and there, However, nothing came out to my liking, so I focused my efforts on other things and here we are. And obviously, I'm focused on my new hyperfixation, enjoy!
starring: Toto Wolff, Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, Mark Weber, Kimi Raikkonen.
TOTO WOLFF, be my daddy.
“You can be my daddy tonight-night-night
If you're seeking heaven
Then you wanna come and get it, get it”
Considering the age difference between you two was almost 25 years, you used to joke with Toto about him being your sugar daddy. Not that you were with him because of any advantage that Toto could benefit you, but that didn't mean he wouldn't give you gifts or try to make your life easier in any way he could.
And by God, he loves to spoil you, give you expensive gifts, take you to extravagant surprises, if that makes him your sugar daddy, he doesn't care, after all he's not even close to stopping.
“I already told you that you don’t need to spend money on me, Torger” You returned the box with the Bulgari emblem on the lid. You knew it was the watch you had glimpsed in the display case a few weeks ago. Toto was getting uncontrollable.
“And I couldn’t care less about that, accept it” he pushed the box back to you “there’s no chance of this being returned, just take it”
SEBASTIAN VETTEL, say yes to heaven.
“Cause I've got my eye on you
I've got my eye on you”
From the moment you met him, you knew it would be impossible to take your eyes off him. Sebastian He caught your attention from the first moment you saw him. You spent weeks talking about him, how attentive he had been in the interview he gave you, how kind and helpful he was. It was no surprise that you were in love with the Formidable Sebastian Vettel.
But it was a surprise to discover that he reciprocated your feelings.
“I thought you were reading,” he said without taking his eyes off the puzzle he was putting together. You felt your cheeks flush as you were caught red-handed.
“And I was,” you confessed, dropping the book on the arm of the couch, “but I thought I told you that sometimes it’s impossible to keep my eyes off you,” and it was his turn to blush.
FERNANDO ALONSO, off to the races.
“My old man is a tough man
But he got a soul as sweet as blood red jam
And he shows me, he knows me”
People said that Fernando had bad posture, he was a difficult guy to deal with. But you never cared about that, because with you, he was nothing more than putty in your hands, he could be as hard as a rough diamond and as sweet as fruit jelly.
Fernando didn't care about being labeled as a difficult guy, he just needed to be good to you, the rest could go away and he didn't care. It wasn't like he could stop himself from being soft on you, after all you dug deep into his chest until you had his entire heart in your hands.
“I love knowing that only I have your soft side, Nano” you say, kissing his chin before giving a startled little scream as you are thrown onto the bed.
“Not for long, tesoro” He murmurs, giving sweet bites to your bare thighs. You giggled before grabbing his hair.
JENSON BUTTON, video games.
“Heaven is a place on Earth with you
Tell me all the things you wanna do
I heard that you like the bad girls, honey
Is that true?”
If a few years ago, someone had told you that you were with Jenson Button, you would have laughed out loud in disbelief. After all, there was no way you could have fallen in love with him, not by the guy who was the very meaning of the word “scoundrel in the dictionary. You wouldn't believe it if someone told you that Jenson would give you his very idea of Heaven on Earth, that Jenson would look at you like you were the only thing keeping him on the planet.
He made you feel unique, and to him, you are the only one.
“You should sleep, peach,” he murmurs sleepily, tightening his arm around your waist. You felt your whole body heat up, few things in the world were better than Jense's sleep-husky voice.
“I don’t feel tired, Jen” you slide your nails down the back of his neck.
“Then let me tire you out, peach” he says, getting under the sheets and the next sound was his moan across the room.
MARK WEBBER, summertime sadness.
“Kiss me hard before you go
Summertime sadness
I just wanted you to know
That, baby, you're the best”
There are the good things in life, and then there is Mark Webber. Sometimes you couldn't believe you had managed to marry him. Despite all the hustle and bustle that surrounds his life, the few intervals of time he spends with you at home, you can't help but feel lucky to have him, Mark had brought you the peace and tranquility you had been searching for.
And all of that made it worth it every time he went out to work, because Mark may have left Formula One, but Formula One never left Mark.
“Don't study too much, I know your thesis needs to be done quickly, but you need to rest, princess,” he says, watching the car pull up at the front door. “And eat right, you can't spend fifteen days eating only instant noodles”
“It's your fault if you got me addicted to your food, love... But I promise I'll take care of myself" you reply before kissing him, enjoying the last moments of his summer vacation. “Call me when you land and go to bed early, you're not young enough to stay up all night.”
He rolled his eyes “I thought we were past the age jokes phase.”
“Never”
KIMI RAIKKONEN, bad boy.
“Baby ghetto love
Mama knows I like the bad boys”
And there was nothing he could do to stop you, when he noticed, you were already infiltrated into his skin, hidden under the entire layer of ice. And Kimi wouldn't allow anyone to try to take you away from there, you had already received the title of Raikkonen girl.
He was the kind of man her mother said would break her heart, Kimi was the perfect kind of bad boy.
He wasn't called the Iceman for nothing, Kimi was the most indifferent person you've ever seen in your life, No one could be that stoic except Kimi Raikkonen. And not even his usual coldness stopped you from approaching him, you seemed drawn to him like a moth to a flame, you wanted to know what was underneath all that ice.
“Your mother hates me anyway, so what difference will a bottle of wine make?” he asks, pressing the buttons on the joystick.
“And I’m still labeled as the bad guy in this story,” he murmurs, dropping the controller anywhere before kissing her.
“It’s not for her, it’s for me,” you reply, sitting on his lap, not caring about disturbing his game. “Only drunk can I put up with you two exchanging barbs all dinner long.”

Stephen crashes Tony's interview/meeting and steals him or rather kidnaps him to their date ;)
Went a little literal with this one. Also very proud of myself for posting at all. It has been a long day. Lots of travel.
Tony wondered if anyone would notice if he took a nap while they debated this particular clause of the Accords amendment for the fourth time.
He glanced at his watch. He still had hours of this—this was only day two of five.
A hum resonated behind him. The current speaker froze, then shrieked. “It’s Strange!!!”
Alarm coursed through him. Tony jumped, turning around and getting a glimpse of the renowned villain just as the ground fell out beneath him. He landed uncomfortably on an armchair. The screams cut off as the portal he’d fallen through closed.
A moment later a portal was opening in front of him and Strange stepped through, screams echoing behind him.
Tony pushed himself to his feet. “What the hell do you want?” he asked, hands itching for his nano-particle housing unit. But the Accords council had demanded he be ‘unarmed’. Which meant that of course now he’d ended up kidnapped by a villain.
This would happen to him.
Strange smiled at him. “Hello Tony.” He gestured at the couch. “Take a seat, please.”
Tony glared. “Yeah, I don’t think so.”
Strange ignored him, sitting down in his own armchair across from Tony. A table appeared between them, presenting burgers on plates.
“Sit. Eat.” Strange paused. “I got your favorite.”
Tony eyed it. He did like a good bacon cheeseburger. “Why?”
Strange smirked at him. “Really, Tony? You know the rules of seduction better than most. I’m surprised you have to ask.”
Seduction. “Is that what this is?” Tony asked. “Your attempts to seduce me?” He scoffed. “Yeah, not happening.”
Strange smirked. “Welcome to our first date, Tony. I plan on making it a good one.” He shrugged. “How else am I supposed to convince you to let me take you on a second one?”

Okay, so this episode was really good for us to get a better understanding of Jun. Although he comes off as a really nonchalant, uncaring person. His whole intention for acting the way that he was towards thame makes sense. It's no wonder why thame trusts him the most and why they click the first time they met immediately, and they stuck with each other through thick and thin in their training days. Jun wanted him to go to take that opportunity because he didn't want him to take on any burdens by the rest of them in the group especially after seeing the financial responsibility that he will have it's just not fair to throw that all on him. To Jun, the four of them nano, Dylan, and pepper would be just useless to him. And so Jun lied about wanting to sign the contract with the film company. He wasn't even the lead in the movie! Let alone the director not paying him any attention in the shooting brushing over him as well. But he only lied cause thame probably wouldn't have gone to Korea if he didn't. Jun distanced himself purposely to make it easier for Thame to leave to not feel bad. He wanted thame to take the selfish route for once and he is and is so good that po broken down to him and told him how what he's doing is selfish he's doing this only for himself it's not maybe the way they all would have wanted but he's taking that chance for himself cuz the group is the most important thing to him it always has been.🥺 And so it hits when you know everything he said in the interview was honestly what he felt towards thame none of it was for show🥹😭

I think 2025 might be the make or break year for Meghan and the universe ending is more likely than her making it. Oprah might hang around while keeping a distance in the hopes of a divorce interview but once netflix drops her no major companies will go near her. Everyone sees her for what she is, I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the rooms in Hollywood, I'd love to know what they say about her in private.
She will be PNGed by every one on this planet within a nano second of the divorce being announced. Even her new friends (like the woman with the makeup line whose private jet she has been mooching off of) and the new friend named Kelly. She can forget about the likes of Serena and Mindy too.
She'll be back to pap walking with Marcus the alleged pimp.

NaNo Interview: Graphic Designer Alyssa Alarcón Santo
NaNoWriMo events would be a lot less colorful without our amazing graphic designers. NaNoWriMo's in-house designer Alyssa Alarcón Santo gives us a peak at her experience at NaNo as well as some of her designer thoughts!
Q: Alyssa, you've been partnering with NaNo for several years now! How did you first begin designing for us?
Back in 2018, I had just gone fully freelance and was trying to get a print shop up and running. I had gotten really into painting these meticulously hand-lettered book stacks and at some point, I posted one on that graphic design site, Dribbble. If I remember correctly, that’s where Nano found me. When I got the email asking if I was interested in designing the event merch that year, I was shocked! I honestly wasn’t even sure it was real until I got on a call with Chris and Shelby.
It’s funny in retrospect, I was so overprepared. I had an entire pitch and design treatment worked up before I had even technically interviewed. That was the design we ended up running with, too.
Q: Do you remember the first NaNo design you ever made?
My first project set was the NaNoWriMo event merch for 2018, so it was the usual items: poster, mug, shirts, etc etc. The theme that year was “NaNoWriMo Is…” and I really wanted to highlight how much it could be at once—planning and writing, procrastinating and collaborating, daydreaming, creating. I wanted to visually lean into the chaos, but y’know, in an orderly fashion. I think we managed that!
Q: What are some of your guiding inspirations behind your NaNo designs?
Before I pivoted into illustration and design, I always thought I would be a writer. I studied creative writing and modernist literature in college, then went on to study comics and narrative design in art school. Because of that background, I always try to keep in mind 1) what story is this design telling and 2) how can we make that story a little more fun?
Q: How has your style changed over time?
I actually think my entire focus has changed over the last five years. When I started designing for NaNoWriMo, I was primarily an illustrator and I spent a lot of time working on hand-lettering-centric projects. I still enjoy lettering and illustration—I still consider myself an artist at the roots—but the bulk of my work is actually in book design and typographic design these days. I’ve been finding it extraordinarily satisfying to assemble and format books of any kind, including comics!
Q: Have you ever attempted an official NaNoWriMo project? If so, how did it go? If not, is that something you see yourself trying in the future?
Oh, absolutely, I have! I started participating in NaNoWriMo when I was 15 years old, way back in 2006. I participated every year up until I was about 23, when work responsibilities started getting in the way. I think the only year I hit the 50k goal was when I was ~18, but I still have the fragments of a dozen novels floating around on various hard drives. I did actually stretch my writing muscles a little during Nano last year and it felt good. I’ll probably join in again this year and see how far I can get.
Q: You've designed graphics for objects, paper, digital, and more. As a designer, what's going on in your head as you design for 2-d versus 3-d projects? Do you have a favorite type of design project?
When you’re designing anything, you always have to keep the end result in mind so there are questions you ask yourself throughout: How will this design be used? What kind of file will it need to be? Am I setting everything up to best satisfy the specs? You think that way for both digital and physical designs, but the questions are different. For digital designs, you think about color spaces, dimensions, resolution.
For physical objects, you think about color conversion, margins and bleeds, composition and how it translates when interacted with. (For example, if you’re designing a mug, you have to keep in mind where the handle is, where the design will land around the cylinder, and what the user sees when they pick it up.)
I personally prefer to design for 3D objects, which is a fun thing I’ve learned from this NaNoWriMo job! It feels so validating to hold the thing you’ve been working on in your hands. I think my favorite of the projects I’ve done for NaNoWriMo so far was the 1k piece puzzle we put out earlier this year. That was a challenge, making sure that there were enough details and gradients and textures to keep it interesting.
Q: If Helvetica and Arial were in a fight, who would win and why?
Helvetica, all the way! It was designed to be highly legible in traditional printing, which I prefer as a dyslexic print designer. Arial is nice on a screen, but I just find Helvetica more versatile. (That said, if we’re really talking about who would win in a type fight, the answer is serifs, like Times New Roman, over sans serifs! Those serifs are pointier. Much better for fighting.) Alyssa Alarcón Santo is a Los Angeles raised, Portland based designer-of-many-hats. Over the years, she has worked as an illustrator, graphic designer, photographer, and now book designer, and she is always looking for fun ways to combine those skills. A throughline running across her work, regardless of medium, is a love of words. She currently serves as In-House Designer for NaNoWriMo and Creative Director of science-fiction magazine Planet Scumm. You can find her work on instagram @alyssasantodesign.

Your heart was shattered. Fernando had absolute certainty he could win this race, and he was so close to doing so.
Watching from the Aston Martin garage, you wanted to yell at the people who had the stupid idea to give him medium tires as the rain started to pour, a single mistake that cost your husband that win.
It hurt you more to see the grin on his face, the excitement in his behavior, and the positive attitude he had put on for the interviews. You knew Fernando enough to know he wasn't happy. But if he was smiling, then you had to do the same. He would like for you to keep the appearance.
You watched the podium ceremony and waited for him to finish the interviews so you could go home. He acted normal, talking to everyone and thanking the support and effort of the team. Quite an effort, you thought with disdain.
And during the drive home, you had your confirmation of how he felt. Fernando talked to you in short words, nodding and lowering his head, avoiding your eyes and touch, things he only does when he's really sad.
Just moments before bed, you felt terrible about his silence and decided you should help him.
"My love," You called, he hummed in response "do you wish to talk about the race?"
Fernando shrugged, with his lowered head, watching you from the corner of his eyes like a sad little puppy.
"I'm so sorry you didn't win. But look at the bright side; it's your best result so far during this season" You slightly punched him in the arm to try to cheer him up.
"I guess..." Fernando murmured.
"Nano," You sighed, "look at the things you're doing with this car. I know you're sad about the loss of the chance of winning, but you're Fernando Alonso, goddammit! Wins will come eventually because if there's someone on that grid who can do amazing things out of a shitty car, that person is you!"
Fernando scoffed, looking at you through lowered lashes. You took his hands in yours and left reassuring kisses on his knuckles.
"You will win again, okay?" You whispered, pecking his lips as he hugged your body.
"Gracias, mi cielo." Fernando purred back in response.

I saw your Hyper Specific Alonso Poll and I’m SO curious about what the figurine is that he used to carry with him and what the story is with the pictures and why he carried it with him?
Hello!
Short answer: he's a massive nerd
The little figurine he always carried around is actually a figure of Asbel, a character from the JRPG "Tales of Graces", although Fernando named him Tomita (idk if nano ever played the game or if he just liked Tomita, but considering how much of a geek he is, especially about Japan, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the former)
We first met Tomita in around 2012, and then he stopped posting him for a while before his brief resurgence in 2020

As for why, I have no idea. I gave up trying to understand this man a long time ago. I think he was just a bit of a mascot tbh. But he had said in interviews at the time that he never went anywhere without Tomita
I think that's everything? @seafoampearlygirl and her Fernando lore masterpost is usually my go-to for things like this
#i miss tomita tbh#I wouldn't be surprised if he still had him#the day he randomly posts a photo of him again i will freak out#f1#fernando alonso

Help me break even on my writing costs!
I bought myself a lifetime subscription to ProWritingAid which is an editing software I've used in the past. Now that I'm out of school and can focus on my writing, I'm buckling down on Runaways and I'm determined to get this story into your hands by October 31st, 2025. This is going to involve a lot more refining and editing, and I know that this purchase will be an investment not only for this book, but for all my work in the future.
I spend a ton of time and energy maintaining my website, reading and reviewing ARCs, interviewing authors, and supporting folks here on tumblr. If you've been following this blog for any amount of time and you appreciate what I do, this kofi is the best way to say thanks. I also want to turn this from a hobby to a career, which means eventually, my writing should pay for my writing instead of me funding all this out of my day job.
I'm not asking for donations. Instead, I'm asking you to buy my stories. Recently, I listed six explorations from the worlds of Runaways and the Real World Sequence, and there will be more to come soon. Each of them is just $1, or pay what you want. There are also stickers for sale if that's more your style. Get them for yourself as a NaNo reward (or consolation prize), as gifts for your writer friends, for Christmas gifts! The holidays are coming up and I'm participating in the shameless merchandizing.
If you don't have the funds to spare, there's certainly no obligation, but if you're feeling generous, I would appreciate reblogs just as much. The Writeblr community has been truly life changing and I cannot say enough how much I appreciate how much your support and enthusiasm means to me. <3 <3 <3
Happy reading,
Etta Grace

love: a diptych is simply lovely ✨✨ your f1 lore knowledge is impressive. what's your process? how did you collaborate with the author? does she give you an outline to research for each driver? does she select the book first or is that after the fic is written? how did you work the lore into the driver research? these are some of the best researched stories in f1. you can make a f1 lore nano degree from this series.
Hiya! Super happy you liked the series <3
I am describing the tl;dr of the process below the cut.
Definitely tell the author with a comment on the fic which is always the best way to appreciate fanfic authors. Just as a fyi, E goes by he/they.
We keep things simple and follow a method E has used in all their fandom works with graphs. So normally I do the research separately and create a graph/fill the graph/extend the graph decade by decade and sometimes at more granularity like year by year or even week by week in some cases like 2021 season for each driver's history. I also have one graph to represent connections between drivers and another one for teams. I also do a catchall one for world events/driver country politics which can be useful for context. It's really systematic and organized but also super easy to work with/super visual. I always add links for sources if it's videos/long interviews, I edit to 1-2 sentences or a small few seconds clip.
E usually works on top of the graph, they write based on where they see good connection density. It actually really works brilliantly as you can see in the series.
We don't really discuss plots/identify characters before I do the research. So it's a two stage process and the stages are separate. I mean E is a pantser so nothing to discuss in terms of plot. But sometimes they can be writing in one area of the graph and they will ask me to check for more information to increase the density there/expand the graph more in that direction. Also the reason I know too much about the hour by hour timeline of the Kyalami Drivers Strike
So stage 1 is research and I do it with the graphs. My main goal is to build a sandbox of canon context so that E can work without canon exposure. Stage 2 is E's magic and how they do it I don't know.
The books are super fascinating! E usually indexes a lot on driver nationality/context and they have a lot of understanding for the political/social context of the decade/year something interesting is happening to the driver. They find the books but IMO it's pretty easy for them and they normally take them from previous reads. In some cases like the Brazil/Senna fic E took a long time to identify a book with strong enough emotional connect for Senna's context in that period of Brazil's history/Sao Paulo/public perception of him/what folks say his actual personality was.
We don't do it for the nano degree :D But that's really sweet of you <3 Personally, It's a super rewarding collab and I feel these kinds of projects are critically important when the world is going crazy. We have to find some positive experiences to stay optimistic and fandom is usually great for that because it has creativity aspects and also community/friendship aspects. For me personally, this saves me from social media doomscrolling a lot and instead I am searching for dead links to 1983 races which is a great way to stay busy/mentally engaged especially when I know my work is going to be used. It's super rewarding and motivates me to put in a lot of effort when I can someone really benefiting from it. One of my fav authors turning it magically into the most beautiful fics I have read + readers appreciating it is really the best reward for the research <3 Simply lovely in the words of a famous boy, oops not a boy anymore :D
#process#researching process#f1#love: a diptych#i cant believe my really basic research got magicked into the some of the most beautiful fics ever

Well irk to be semi fair on the script issue. It’s very possible they haven’t read the script yet lol. Remember we just learned as recent as last season there are times they are getting the script the night before they film or the day of.
But I wouldn’t believe for a nano second him and Oliver don’t know the final outcome by now.
And I do honestly findthe entire idea that they are all going (very badly mind you 😂) hmm oh my character? Yeah I don’t really know what’s happening with them? I play a character in this tv show? Are you sure? Hmm maybe Tim knows?? I certainly don’t??? Rather hilarious though because it’s giving most basic “attempt” without even really trying to shift focus lmao.
Well, them not knowing the script? I can believe that for sure. This is a Tim Minear show after all. 🙄
But them not having one single clue about where this storyline is going? No way! I fully agree with you!
They knew before season 7 aired. I'm sure of it. The amount of Buddie promo they did then was insane. It was the biggest turnaround ever. We went from 'nothing' at the end of FOX's season 6 to 'everything' at the beginning of ABC's season 7. It felt like a dream come true.
They knew exactly what was going on. They knew all the way through the bi Buck and T arc. They've always known that BT was very temporary and that T was a plot device character who would help set Buddie in motion.
These interviews are getting more and more hilarious. I agree. The amount of crazy subterfuge they come up with is insane. 🤣🤣🤣
I love everything about this!

SpaceTime -- A brief history
SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States. The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science. SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research. The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network. Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor. Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. Gary’s radio career stretches back some 34 years including 26 at the ABC. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. He was part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and became one of its first on air presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth. The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually. However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage. Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently. StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016. Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.
