Incest, obedience, and the big three clans in Jujutsu Kaisen

In the chapters when Naoya first appears he's chatting with Maki and Mai's mother about them; he is reviewing Mai and Maki for marriage (his first cousins) because of the level of traditionalism/purity the Zenins uphold. For the Zenins "inbreeding is a way to preserve the bloodline and inherited techniques. they also believe that it increases the chance of having a child gain the rare inherited techniques." @tempenensis​

We can also see this being upheld by looking at the family tree and seeing that Naobito married his niece. It can also be suspected that Toji’s first wife (Megumi’s mother) was also related to the Zenin family in some way due to the stark resemblance between her and the other Zenins. His first wife was not the one with the Fushiguro last name, it was Tsumiki’s mother who had the last name

Megumi's mother resembles all of the other Zenin members and if she was introduced to the series as a character that wasn't Megumi's mother she would easily be able to pass as a Zenin

We know by now and have seen that inbreeding does not guarantee powerful heirs (Maki easily kills the remaining Zenin clan). We also see characters like Gojo, Yuta, Geto, etc. who are not the result of inbreeding being more powerful than them. Now you would think why would the Zenins not marry off someone powerful from the other big three clans like the Gojo or Kamo family to increase the odds of a child getting a rare technique from either side especially after learning about why inbreeding is bad? To put it simply they make terrible choices and one of the only good choices that the Zenins have made is Naobito making Megumi head of the clan. Not to mention they believe the Zenins are superior than other sorcerers and say " if you're not a Zenin you're not a jujutsu sorcerer. If you're not a sorcerer you're not a person"

There are also the weird "first loves" in the series being the other characters' siblings or family members (notice how it's Zenin members that do this)

Not to mention the weird relationship between the father and daughter we saw in chapter 96

Anyways you may be wondering why I made a post on this topic of all things. I just wanted to show that Gege has no issue showing how fucked up the sorcerer world is, especially the big three families. The clans are basically like nobility and practice incest to keep the bloodlines pure. The Zenin clan is the biggest example of this. They are purists, traditionalists, and misogynists. Their values are hierarchy, techniques/cursed energy, and obedience. This environment explains why Naoya grew up the way he did and why he has the beliefs that he does. 

The first son of the family is expected to lead the family (not a woman because of the misogyny). When Toji was born he had expectations from the start of being the first son. He was supposed to have one of the rare techniques and cursed energy but he didn't. He was punished for this by being thrown in the pit and abused by them. Once he started to disobey them he was disowned. However, when he showed how powerful he really was they still didn't respect him. Naoya and Ranta were the few Zenin members who had genuine respect for Toji, the others feared him because they knew he could easily take them all down if he wanted to but they still did not respect him. When he passed they most likely downplayed how strong he was because they still didn't respect him. 

When Maki started to become like Toji the fear returns but once again they don't respect her. The mistreatment of Toji by the clan could explain why he became the way he did. He was faced with years of abuse and when he got to be "the strongest" he let loose possibly as a way of retaliation to the clan. No one could stop him and he could finally do what he wanted (seen with a lot of strict upbringing and obedience). All the children in the Zenin clan are viewed as worthless and treated like trash unless they have a technique/cursed energy and are expected to serve their parents/other clan members and not get in the way or they will be disowned. 

It is not just the Zenin clan that does this though. The Kamo clan casts out Noritoshi's mother because she was his father's mistress (and not pure blood) and Nori is essentially an illegitimate child. However, Nori gained the clan's technique and was made heir and the next head of the clan just like Megumi was even though they were illegitimate heirs (Megumi because Toji was disowned). This shows how much the clan values technique and how they view hierarchy and have exceptions. While we do not know much about the Gojo clan, it is not farfetched to believe they also follow these practices.

Sorcerers are not good people, they don't follow the same rules as everyone else with barely any consequences. They do weird and gross things but to them that is normal. Gege manages to show this without being over the top or edgy

So I decided to post my thoughts from AO3 about JJK and how to correct the issues i saw in the next arc. Let me know what you all think.

I didnt like how gege built up the zenin clan only to throw them away as a plot device for maki's development. I thought the story would take a different turn when megumi was named heir but it felt rushed and extremely contrived, beginning immediately with the round table decision to KILL megumi. I cannot understand why anyone backed this decision. Why would a family that values power, tradition, prestige and inherited techniques so much not just have a duel to decide the leader?

1) It retcons everything we know about the Zenin including Toji's logic for giving megumi away. He knew if megumi had a good technique the family would invest in his development… turned out megumi didn't just have a "good" technique he had THE BEST technique! Toji' concern was never that theyd kill his som but that they'd turn megumi into a POS. Gojo explictly stated that hundreds of years ago a TS and 6E user killed each other in a mock-duel and the 2 families NEVER got over it. So the idea that the zenin would kill a TS user is completely out of the question. Even IF killing Megumi served Naoya, it didnt serve anyone else and goes against the zenins principles.

2)The TS literally puts the zenin on par (or higher) to satoru gojo in terms of strength. With gojo sealed The zenin clan would jet-propel to no1 in jujutsu society, which is what the family WANTS, power and prestige.

3) Megumi canonically had a lot of supporters, so this goes back to my first point that the blowback of killing him wouldve caused mass, internal strife.

4) Maki's massacre. (Ugh...)

So my headcannon is this:

Naoya gets told he isn't gonna be heir and calls the elders to the round table. Since a large portion of the family want megumi as head, naoya issues a challenge/duel on the condition that if naoya wins, megumi becomes an official zenin member but forfeits all rights to ever become clan head (doesnt matter if its on paper or binding vow, point is megumi won't be head). This would enable naoya to stay at the helm, while also boosting the zenins prestige because they'd have the TS under their control. Having a duel would also showcase naoya's talents so he doesnt come off a glass cannon like he did when maki flattens him later to show HER overwhelming strength. This plan makes infinitely more sense to me than what the manga did because it benefits EVERYBODY. Maki wants this. Naoya wants this. And so does the entire clan, because megumi will be a zenin regardless of who wins. It also put megumi in an active role, instead of passive one.

With this simple change, we can explore the characters introduced in the hei unit, tojis backstory/life, mai and makis sisterly bond, megumis leadership acumen, And ofc this would be the perfect time for naoya to reveal the truth about toji: That Satoru gojo is the one who killed him and thats why megumj and tsumiki were alone (in an attempt to turn megumi against satoru).

This change also benefits Maki's character too because after megumi loses, she tells him not to worry because he has enough supporters to drive a split in the clan, so while he can't be head of the zenin he can be head of his OWN faction. (remember this was makis ultimate goal, to have a safe space for mai, thats why she wanted megumi as head in the first place) now I'm skipping details, but ogi catches wind of maki's coup to start a civil war within the clan and throws her in the pits for it (a MUCH better reason to kill her than taking curse tools. I mean maki has been taking curse tools for years and nobody cared!) She becomes toji 2.0 and the story continues along the lines of the canon. Maki still gets her power boost and her revenge on NAOYA's supporters instead of the entire clan so she doesnt come off as a psychopath, and megumi learns the truth. There is even room for potential redemption for naoya should megumi prevent Maki from killing him which eliminates the need for curse naoya (a colossal waste of time)

Some of Protagonist Family headcanons I have, because I'm not over Spark AU yet

So because my two other Spark AU posts (If you haven't read that yet, here's the link for Part 1 and for Part 2!) were more like for explaining the whole AU lore, I decided to present some Protagonist (NaoMaya + Ren) Family headcanons. Because of last Spark AU post had very dark undertones, this time I'll present some cute/heartwarming/funny headcanons I have about Ren's parents and Ren's childhood!

I tried to sort out the headcanons in chronological order so here they are!

-This one is more NaoMaya headcanon than Protagonist Family one, but since they ARE Ren's parents in this AU, I thought I should include this one about how they met: I think they met soon after P2 things happened (like a couple of months after) and Yukino was the one, who actually introduced them to each other, since she knew Maya from work and Naoya from high school. I think maybe because Maya was very overworked, Yukino convinced her to relax a little and go with her for her old class reunion because Maya already knew some of her classmates like Maki or Eriko from P2, so it wasn’t a problem for anyone if she decided to go with Yukino there. And Naoya eventually show up there and that’s how they met. They actually fell in love very quickly, despite differences in their personalities and decided to get married quickly (like 2 years after they started dating ) and Ren was born at some point after that

-They live in Mikage-Cho in a house that belonged to Naoya’s late grandmother (Ren was also born in this city, in the hospital where P1 events took place - isn't it symbolic in some kind of way btw?). Maya is still working in Sumaru though, since the cities are very close to each other - she is just commuting for work in the morning

-Maya preferred Ren as a name for their son and Naoya preferred Akira but he eventually back down to his wife’s idea and Akira is Ren’s middle name. So his full name in this AU would be Ren Akira Toudou, but when he is introducing himself, he's only using his first name

-Naoya had to eventually get his earring changed from his golden ring to black stud earring, because baby Ren was pulling his earring everytime Naoya was holding him and almost teared his earlobe because of that

-In my AU, Maya was the one that came with RenRen nickname for Ren and called him that nickname since he was a baby. When she accidentally named him that in front of his friends, Ryuji started to also calling him that nickname just to annoy him

-One time, Ren actually drew Arsené, when he was little and acted like Arsené was his imaginary friend - his parents suspected, that this may be his future Persona but they weren’t 100% sure, so kept in mind he might have a Spark. He found that drawing years later, when he came back home after P5 happened

-Ren grew up oblivious to his parents Personas and didn’t know about it or about Velvet Circle until events of P5 took place. Of course he knew his parents's friends, since for example Tatsuya visited them a lot (and probably babysit him many times with Jun), but Ren didn’t know that besides friendly conversations, they also are talking about more serious and secret stuff. One time though, when he was in kindergarten, he overheard their secret conversation. Imagine the Maya's and Naoya’s absolute PANIC when their son asked them carefree “What is Persona, mom and dad?” during regular family dinner. They were probably scared to let him on that matters in such a young age so Naoya answered with something like “It’s….it’s a thing only for adults”, which led little Ren to believe it’s probably some alcohol or something (since alcohol is “the adult thing”) and stopped asking this uneasy questions. Velvet Circle was even more careful with their conversations from this incident

-Ren actually attended St. Hermelin high school during his first year, but got expelled due to P5 events (you, know the drunk Shido and the woman incident?). The rumor (but normal rumor, not like in P2) got out that young Toudou is violent and crazy delinquent, that is attacking random people on streets after he got expelled and were sued in court, so any other schools, even in Sumaru didn’t want him as a student so that’s why he ended up in Tokyo

-When Ren was a child, he wanted to have a cat but Naoya was allergic so he refused. So when Ren brought Morgana to the house after he came back from Tokyo, Naoya was probably terrified of the cat, because of his allergy, but it turned out, Morgana actually wasn’t making him allergic (maybe because he was NOT A CAT! but a Velvet Room being) so after few weeks they became friends, especially that he understands Morgana’s talking (in my AU, every Persona user could hear Morgana talk) and Morgana is probably terrorizing the whole family into going to sleep now (cons of having talking cat in your home I guess 😂)

So yeah, that's the all headcanons I have for now about this particular family! I hope y'all find it them as funny/cute/heartwarming as I do!
