Today has been a bit of a blah day so I want to share some photos of flowers and greenery from a nearby vacant lot. Tumblr had a post going around about The Natural History of Vacant Lots and now I think about the book every time I see one.

This blue tower of gorgeous is Viper's-bugloss.

This is White Campion.

This is Yellow Salsify.

This is Musk Thistle.

This is Horseweed, I think.

This is Smooth Brome.

This is Chicory.

This is St. John's Wort, which I can't believe I didn't recognize myself.

Okay, the book says the yellow bottom right one is Bird's Foot Trefoil and we have some Bur Clover in the top right and bottom left.

It's really not funny how much happier I am in the woods. It's discernable, it's obvious. Our brains are wired to be in collaboration with nature. But in this built/competitive/consumerist society when the highest value is placed on profit, the most basic of human needs cannot be met. Not even the pursuit of happiness.
