Weekly Nest Notes: Perfect Timing is Everything

Harriet and M15 execute perfectly timed exchanges almost like a dance as one leaves the nest and the other arrives. They have become an efficient incubating team. There were a few cooler evenings and breezy days over the week that required continual brooding of their Eggs. It may seem as if those hours spent on the nest are tedious ones but Harriet and M15 instinctively time the moments they rise up to roll the Eggs keeping the developing Chicks at an even temperature. M15 delivered beak and talons full of grasses and moss to the nest and they each work the new materials in making the nest bowl fluffy and fresh. He also brought a large air plant for Harriet which provided many hours of entertainment for them moving it from place to place as they incubated.

Harriet and M15 are on constant watch and sound the alert to any unwanted passers-by. They make their presence known to the neighboring Eagle pair. Many times when Harriet and M15 fly off to the boundaries of their territory they cause a scattering of egrets and other birds in their flight plan. At other times they have been observed soaring the skies with vultures and wood storks. M15 delivered fish and a squirrel for Harriet which she devoured quickly as he incubated.  M15 was observed eating on one of the snag trees and arrived at the nest tree another evening sporting a very well filled crop. More food will be delivered to the nest as hatching time nears. The halfway mark to Eaglets is just about here.  Harriet and M15 carry on in their duties effectively with their goal of producing healthy offspring on the horizon. A list of nature/wildlife/animal webcams

joreLook we could be pretty restricted from getting out and interacting with wildlife and nature. So here’s a number of webcams from all over the place which will let you watch wildlife/animals - many of them have sound so just having them on in the background gives a soothing background noise. And we all need nice things right now. 

BTW, this list is nowhere near exhaustive

Cornell Lab Webcams

They have so many!  And there’s a mix of bird feeder ones where you are seeing many kinds of birds (and other things!)  interacting on bird feeders and cams aimed at nests of individuals - which means it’s good webcam season in the northern hemisphere as nesting is underway.  But my absolute favourites are the Panama bird feeder (tropical birds squabbling over fruit), the Albatrosses (currently have a chick) and the Ontario bird feeder (hey they’ve got snow). 

Scottish Wildlife Trust Osprey cam Expect the Ospreys back any time now..... 

Shetland cliffcams... a wee bit early, but the Shetland isles are a group of islands off the north coast of mainland UK with marvellous sea cliffs and tens of thousands of wildlife. Puffins are the main attractions. For now though the only webcam is letting you look out over the cliffs 

Dorset barn owls - want to see Barn owls gently snoozing in a box? this is your cam. But even as I wrote this post there were woodpeckers drumming and chiffchaffs calling and it was lovely. 

African safari cams - 6 cameras around waterbodies in Africa (helpfully, it doesn’t provide any further information on where). But even just looking around, them while preparing this post one had an elephant family and there were various birds around

Nature Conservancy Australia reefcam Reefcams seem to be hard to find. This is one. It wasn’t really working. 

This site has consolidated a lot too - Explore.org And a number of them show highlights at times when the webcams aren’t operable. but there are hummingbirds and more African cams (including the Africam ones above) and a bunch of ocean ones and bears and gorillas... and just go look ok? 

Zoos etc

It’s not all about wildlife. Check out zoos and aquariums for their own streams - many are doing more right now. Two I use are Monterey Bay Aquarium which has both webcams of wildlife and also of their own exhibits and Edinburgh Zoo for its penguins and pandas. The Penguins are preparing to breed. Much pebble stealing going on.

No fox sighting last night. That doesn't mean the fox can't get in; I'd be happier seeing failure on the naturecam. The hens will still be shut in much of today, I think.

Weekly Nest Notes- Oct. 8th- A New Season Begins!

Harriet and M15 are working to ready their nest for a new generation of offspring. Time off allowed them to renew themselves and restore energy for their grand endeavor. Harriet stopped by for an occasional visit to her beloved nest and territory throughout the summer months. The nest and tree held fast over the break. As the new Nesting Season approached, Harriet and M15 made more appearances, perched together, added sticks and grasses to the nest and engaged in all their bonding behaviors. M15 delivered a fish gift for Harriet which she graciously ate the next morning. Harriet even brought prey to the nest for her own lunch. Like a beautiful dance, they picked up where they left off and never missed a beat.

Securing the home front is a priority as they warn away unwanted visitors. Harriet and M15 perched in the nest tree overnight and pesky owls buzzed M15 one night then Harriet the very next night. They were caught off guard by the silent flight of the owls who are possibly looking for a nest. Harriet and M15 remain cautious and alert in defense of their nest and territory which they are not about to give up. Situations may change and the landscape may shift but Harriet and M15 will work tirelessly making all the necessary preparations to ensure a successful Season of rearing their young.

Weekly Nest Notes: Small Step, Giant Feat

E12 and E13 exercised their magnificent wings building strength, stamina and control in preparation for their future flights. They caught big air lifting them higher and higher while flapping away in the breezes. They each took a small step off the nest for an Eaglet and a giant leap toward their milestone to freedom. E12 hopped up with ease to the veranda branch and E13 launched there 2 days later. Now the fun begins as they set their sights on higher perches in the nest tree. They seem advanced for their ages with E12 being the youngest and E13 tied for second youngest among the Eaglets to branch from the nest over 7 Seasons. E12 visited the veranda branch again and stayed a while preening, winging and appearing to enjoy the new perspective.  E12 and E13 are engaging all their practice grasping onto the nest rails, balancing there and fly hopping from one edge to the other. Although it may seem like a small accomplishment, their branching is a test in courage and progress. They pass this feat with flying colors!

E12 and E13 are becoming formidable forces in the nest and feeding times are more intense. The food deliveries become “drop and go” by  Mom and Dad who get mobbed by hungry, eager Eaglets where toes, beaks and neck feathers are fair game. E12 and E13 have made great strides in their self-feeding techniques as they tear into the prey with gusto. E13 displayed their inner Eagle stealing a meal, keeping it, and warning Mom, Dad and E12 to stay away. Important survival tools are being honed during the battles for food in the nest which will prove invaluable in the wild.  Mom and Dad perch above the nest giving E12 and E13 space to discover and practice new behaviors. Dad dropped a fresh squirrel catch on the nest and immediately fled to the attic branch with Mom.  Both E’s mantled and fought for the prey as E13 grabbed it and studied it while keeping E12 at bay. Mom and Dad observed as E13 began the task of opening and eating the squirrel. After a while, E12 snagged the prey in a tug-o-squirrel.  E12 did well working on it, then Mom eventually came to the nest to offer another lesson in de-furring. Striving for daily survival will be a reality for E12 and E13 in their coming journeys. They will be well prepared as Harriet and M15 lead by outstanding example imparting many vital lessons to their intelligent, robust Eaglets.  Nest Notes by dadsjazz.  Header photo by Desiree Deliz
