Jewelers’ Building and NBC Tower, Chicago
35 East Wacker, also known as the Jewelers' Building, is a 40-story 159.4 m (523 ft) historic building in the Loop community area of Chicago, Illinois, United States, located at the intersection of Wabash Avenue and E. Wacker Dr., facing the Chicago River. It was built from 1925 to 1927, and was co-designed by Joachim G. Giaver and Frederick P. Dinkelberg. It was once considered to be the tallest building in the world outside New York City. Formerly the Pure Oil Building and North American Life Insurance Building, 35 East Wacker was listed in 1978 as a contributing property to the Michigan–Wacker Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places, and was designated a Chicago Landmark on February 9, 1994.
For its first 14 years, the building had a car lift that served the first 23 floors and facilitated safe transfers for jewelry merchants. Currently, the French-American Chamber of Commerce in Chicago is a tenant, and the showroom of architect Helmut Jahn was atop the building inside the dome, which was also once a restaurant  called the Stratosphere Club, often erroneously said to be run by Al Capone. (In reality, the Stratosphere Club opened in 1937, long after Capone was imprisoned and too late for the building to have been an illegal speakeasy).  The building is currently being renovated, by Goettsch Partners, and the facade is being maintained, but the interiors converted into a more modern configuration.  Both the Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the City of Chicago have recognized the renovation project with awards.

The NBC Tower is an office tower on the Near North Side of Chicago, Illinois located at 454 North Columbus Drive (455 North Cityfront Plaza is also used as a vanity address for the building) in downtown Chicago's Magnificent Mile area. Completed in 1989, the 37-story building reaches a height of 627 feet (191 m). NBC's Chicago offices, studios, and owned-and-operated station WMAQ-TV are located here as of 1989 and on October 1, 1989, WMAQ-TV broadcast their first newscast at 10:00 that evening at their new home, NBC Tower with the then-weeknight news team of Ron Magers, Carol Marin, John Coleman, and Mark Giangreco. Later, Telemundo O&O WSNS-TV since their 2002 purchase by NBC. Formerly its former radio sister WMAQ/WSCR was located here. The studios of NBC's former Chicago FM property, WKQX and its sister station WLUP are located in the NBC Tower.
The design, by Adrian D. Smith of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, is considered one of the finest reproductions of the Art Deco style. It was inspired by 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City, which is NBC's global headquarters. The tower is further enhanced by the use of limestone piers and recessed tinted glass with granite spandrels. The building takes additional cues from the nearby landmark Tribune Tower with the use of flying buttresses. A 130 ft (40 m) broadcast tower and spire tops the skyscraper. WMAQ and WSNS have STL and satellite facilities on the roof; the STLs link to WMAQ and WSNS's transmitter facilities atop the Willis Tower. WMAQ radio/WSCR studios and STL were located in the building until 2006 when they relocated to Two Prudential Plaza.
Located in the Cityfront Plaza area, the building contains 850,000 sq ft (79,000 m2) of space and three floors of underground parking with 261 spaces. Connected to the main tower is a four-story radio and television broadcasting facility where popular shows such as Judge Mathis and WSNS's newscasts and WMAQ's newscasts are currently taped, and was the former recording facility for The Jerry Springer Show and The Steve Wilkos Show before their tax credit-influenced move to Stamford, Connecticut in 2009. It was also home to the 1990s syndicated improv/sketch show Kwik Witz, The Jenny Jones Show until its cancellation in 2003, and Steve Harvey until their move to Los Angeles in 2017.

Live! From New York: A Brittana Fanfiction Ch. 2
Listen... I know it’s been a minute, but I promise there won’t be as long a gap until the next update. I swear. Catch up on FF.net and AO3.
Santana had been to 30 Rockefeller Plaza three times in her life. The first was when she first got to New York, and she and some of her friend’s had stumbled across the crazy idea that they wanted to go ice skating during Christmas. Santana hadn’t really known how to ice skate, but she’d given it a try, and broken her wrist. The second time was three years later when her parents visited from California, and insisted on going for the tour of NBC studios. They were obsessed with Kathie Lee and Hoda on the morning show, and it didn’t matter how much Santana protested, they were going, so she tagged along. She’d resisted the siren song of network TV for as long as she could, but once the NBC page pointed out the wall of signed photos from former hosts of SNL, they had her. She spent nearly $300 in the gift shop on swag, and yes, Mercedes had laughed at her for her lack of willpower, but it’d had been well worth it. She’d considered for a moment wearing her SNL t-shirt, but after about thirty seconds of wandering around her apartment, she figured that maybe that was coming on too strong.
The host dinner on Tuesday night was a tradition. Santana didn’t need to be told that. It was her first chance to make a big impression on the cast, writers and some of the crew, many she’d only seen on TV, and it was pretty important. Rachel had given her a long list of places that would impress even the snobbiest of connoisseurs, and for once, Santana was glad to have a friend who’s insane dietary demands kept her on the cutting edge of the trendy eateries in New York. Rachel and Mercedes sat in her dressing room, Michelin Eating Guides open and surrounding them, both shouting out suggestions as best they could, but Santana had yet to hear one that just sounded right.
“Oooh, how about Le Papillion?”
“Rachel, I’m trying to blow them away, not put them to sleep. That restaurant looks like the kind of place you’d take your mistress so you could avoid running into your side chick.”
Rachel took the comment in stride, thumbing through a few more pages. “The Grange? It’s got this lovely hunter’s lodge motif. I don’t  find it personally enjoyable, but the cast might.”
Santana grunted noncommittally and hit a few mindless notes on the piano she kept in the corner.
“Okay, how about the new Japanese restaurant by that celebrity chef? I heard that they flip the sushi to your table from across the room!” Mercedes said excitedly waving a glossy magazine high above her head.
Santana hit a few more notes, and suddenly closed the piano with a sharp snap.
She pointed to Rachel and Mercedes in turn. “I don’t want gimmicks. I don’t want tricks. I just want a place that will dazzle and inspire them!”
She stomped over to the couch and sat down in a huff, crossing her arms.
“Um, so…” Mercedes said, setting her magazine down and sitting forward to pat Santana on the leg. “I’m going to ignore that little outburst because you’re my girl, and I love you, but if you snap at me like that again, I’m gonna yank out your weave, and sell it on Ebay.”
There was a lightness in her voice, but Santana knew that she wasn’t far from the truth, so she grimaced and nodded, rolling her eyes for effect.
“Fine, ‘Cedes, but something has got to be perfect. If I can’t find it, I will never make this right.”
There was a whine in her own voice that Santana didn’t like, but she couldn’t help it. This was a big deal. This was a first impression, and in a lot of ways, it could be the first step on her path of Saturday Night Live fame. She didn’t want to want it as much as she did, but she did. She cleared her throat in an attempt to wipe the desperation away.
“I don’t know why you’re all worked up about this anyway, Santana.” Rachel said behind the latest copy of Fine Eats magazine. “It’s just a performance. You do it every night of the week and twice on Sundays. This is old hat stuff.”
“Yeah, but if she screws up it’s not just to the crowd of one theater.” Mercedes broke in  from behind her own dining magazine. “It’s in front of hundreds of thousands. Or at least whatever is normal for a Saturday night, I dunno. Could be millions.”
Santana laid across the couched, nearly knocking the magazine out of Rachel’s hands.
Rachel raised it above her head with a sigh. “Even then, it’s not even prime time! I sang backup for Sia last year at New Year’s and there were probably more people in Times Square alone than-”
“What’s this?” Santana exclaimed, rolling off the couch, and grabbing a magazine from the stack on the floor near the couch.
“What’s what?” Mercedes and Rachel said, nearly in unison.
Santana pointed at photo in the magazine, tapping the magazine emphatically. “Blaine Anderson!”
Mercedes was by her side in an instant, and nearly grabbed the article from her hands. “No fricking way. Are you serious? Blaine Anderson? The guy from Newberry Park?!”
“It’s gotta be. I remember that dumbass cowlick from anywhere.”
“Perhaps you’d like to clue me in, ladies.” Rachel sighed, folding her magazine primly in her lap.
“Oh yeah, Berry, I forgot that it was only recently that you started stalking us.” Santana quipped.
“I know that you’re joking, Santana, but I think everyone in the company agreed that you’re ‘joke restraining order’ was beyond the pale.”
“He ran this food cart in Newberry park, in our old neighborhood in Queens. He had a bunch of Filipino food, and it was pretty much the most delicious thing we’d ever eaten in our whole lives. We basically went there every day for three years, and then one day he said he was shutting down, and was going to open a brick and mortar place. We told him we’d be first in line, and gave him our contact info, but we hadn’t heard anything since.”
“Maybe that was your favorite place to eat, Mercedes, but I like to think that I had a bit more class than some fly by night operation.”
“Oh, well, I guess all the times that you texted  me desperately at midnight asking me to bring you some adobo chicken on my way home from work were hallucinations.” Mercedes shot back.
Santana buried her nose behind the glossy print, and wouldn’t meet Mercedes’ eye. “Yeah, well, whatever. It turns out he made it big, and now his place is one of the up and comers in Manhattan.”
“Well, good for him! I’m so proud. We should definitely make a reservation.”
Rachel stooped behind Santana and took a look at the magazine herself. “Filipino-American chef Blaine Anderson opens up Hapa an American/Filipino fusion restaurant that mixes both of Anderson’s heritages into one amazing dining experience. Good luck with that reservation, ladies, it says here that they’re booked out for the next six months.”
“Maybe for a peon such as yourself.” Santana snatched the paper away, and tugged on the page, tearing it out. “But we were there at the beginning, and I’m sure there’s no way he can refuse one of his original supporters a seat.”
Mercedes did some quick math. “It’s not just one seat, San, you’re taking the whole cast of SNL, probably plus some of the writers. That’s like 20 people.”
“Sure, I’m not saying that it’s going to be easy, but you’re talking to Santana Lopez. Writer and star of the most sought after ticket on Broadway. I’ll offer him a few balcony seats to Billie! and he’ll be sold.”
“I’m not sure if it’s going to be that easy, Santana.”
“Well, luckily Rachel, no one asked you.”
“Santana, she’s right.” Mercedes said. “And, if you remember correctly, it’s not like you and Blaine Anderson had the most cozy relationship.”
Santana smiled slyly. “And that’s why I’m not going to ask him. I’m going to ask the co-star of the most sought after ticket on Broadway. The woman behind the throne. One of the most talented, kind, and not to mention beautiful women that I know.”
Mercedes opened her mouth to reply, but Rachel interrupted her.
“Why Santana, that was the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me!” She swooned.
Both Santana and Mercedes gave her a glare, but moved on with the conversation.
“Flattery will get you nowhere, Lopez.”
“Aw, c’mon, ‘Cedes. You know how much this means to me. Having it at this place, this great, cosmopolitan establishment, on the rise, with amazing food… It’s a can’t miss! It would mean the world to me.”
“I don’t know, Santana…”
“And I would owe you one.”
A devious smile crept over Mercedes’ features, and Santana’s eyes grew wide. She was beginning to regret her decision, but Mercedes was already accepting, her hand out to accept Santana’s.
“Deal. I’ll get you and the cast into Blaine Anderson’s restaurant in a couple weeks, and you’ll officially owe me one.”
There was something about her tone that Santana didn’t like, but she was desperate. What she had said to Mercedes and Rachel was real. There was something in her that needed to make a good impression, and she wasn’t sure why, but she’d do anything to achieve her goal.
She swallowed audibly, but took Mercedes’ hand regardless. “Fine. Deal.”
Mercedes held her hand a bit tighter. “But you have to convince Emma to give up the tickets.”
Santana looked like she wanted to resist, but a thousand scenarios ran through her head and there wasn’t a single one where she figured she could refuse this request.
“Deal.” She said, defeated
Mercedes nodded with a satisfied smile, and finally released Santana’s hand. She stooped down and started gathering the magazines off the floor.
“Ooh, I can’t wait. I’m already thinking of what you can do.”
Santana bent over to help. “Yeah, whatever. You just focus on getting me in that restaurant and the rest will fall into place.”
Rachel had placed herself delicately back on the couch, and was fanning through a Vanity Fair.
“You do realize she’s probably just going to get you to watch the kids so she and the Mrs. can have a date night, right?”
Santana scoffed and watched Mercedes carefully. “Yeah, she knows that I would do that for free. I can already see that she’s got something more devious in mind. Deny it, Mercedes. I dare you.”
Mercedes laughed lightly, and placed her stack of magazines on the coffee table. The laugh took on an edge of the maniacal as she didn’t say a word, but just walked out of the room.
\
Leslie Jones and Artie Abrams both watched Brittany with a strange fascination. They talked, but didn’t bother directing any of their comments toward Brittany, who had been muttering to herself for the better part of an hour, and had been standing in the middle of her dressing room with a signed copy of the Billie! playbill for the better part of fifteen.
They watched her mutter for a few moments more and suddenly Leslie stood up from the couch.
“Girl, just leave it! Damn. I swear you’ve spent more time doing this than writing any sketch I have ever seen you in.”
Artie waved his hands in solidarity. “Les, she can’t hear you, girl. She’s in La La Land.”
“Well, she better get her ass out of La La Land, because we’re supposed to be writing something to take to pitch tomorrow, and I can’t even think with her running around like this!”
The weeks before Santana Lopez’s arrival had slowly whittled down to days, and now they were only a mere 72 hours away from her arrival at Studio 8H. While not everyone in the cast knew (or cared too much) about Brittany’s fascination with Santana Lopez, they had all found a bit of humor in her worsening condition. It was like watching someone very, very slowly sink into quicksand that they only notice after the fourth or fifth day.
“What do you think she’s going to do with it in the end?” Artie asked, with a kind of quiet wonder.
“I dunno. She’ll probably try and eat it or something.” Leslie cupped her hands around her mouth. “She’s not going to care if you have a totally normal thing in your dressing room, Britt. Honestly, she’s probably not even going to come in here.”
That last sentence was directed towards Artie, but Brittany’s eyes snapped to Leslie. “You don’t think so? I mean, I wasn’t thinking that it would be a part of a tour or anything, but I’d really hoped that she’d stop by. I could show her my table, and my computer and stuff.”
“Britt. Girl.” Leslie deadpanned. “Santana Lopez, is like on a whole other level right now. She’s won like a million awards, and was friends with President Obama. She’s on a whole other level of cool, my dude.”
Brittany tried not to let her face fall too much, but she couldn’t help but be disappointed. “Yeah, no, you’re right. What was I thinking?”
She placed the framed Playbill on her desk with a soft slap. Artie pushed his wheelchair closer, putting a comforting hand on her shoulder.
“Nah, Britt, it’s not like that. I’m sure she’ll come by.”
“Yeah, Brittany, she’s a star, but she seems like a really down to Earth person, I’m sure it’ll be fine.” Leslie chimed in, quick to reassure her.
Brittany took a deep sigh, and dramatically slithered to the floor, her body in fluid motion, floating to the ground. Artie had to admit that he was always impressed with her control and grace. Even falling to the floor, she looked like a dancer.
One thing he did know from being her friend for just under a decade was how resilient she was. He leaned over and patted Brittany on the leg.
“It’s cool, Britt, don’t worry. How about we head over to Jane’s office, and see if we can’t make some comedy magic?”
Leslie and Brittany both looked up at him quizzickly.
“What?” He continued, puzzled. “I thought it would better than just saying, ‘Write some sketches.’”
“Yeah.” said Leslie, taking a large step over Brittany, and reaching out a hand. “You should probably stick to jokes, funny man. C’mon, Britt, let’s get out of here before we catch any of his bad jokes.”
Brittany took Leslie’s hand, but lingered a moment as she and Artie argued a bit as they moved down the hall. She would be the first to admit that she sometimes got caught up in her emotions, and maybe tended to exaggerate more often than not.
Maybe.
But, she was a performer, and she was a bit of a cut up, and it seemed sometimes that the only way that she could express herself was in a funny character, or voice or bit. She was like the world’s most outgoing introvert. But, at the end of the day, she really did want Santana Lopez to notice her. What came after that, she really had no idea. She stifled a heavy sigh that was escaping from her lips and took a right instead of the left, turning off into a less populated corner of 30 Rock.
It was nearly midnight, and the building was quiet, but that was par for the course. Most of the “late night” shows filmed at six in the afternoon, so around this time, it was usually only SNL writers left. They were still early in the week, so the crunch wasn’t on, but it wouldn’t hurt to hammer out a few sketch ideas before heading in for the night. Still, it was pretty early for the SNL folks, most didn’t get their motors really running until 10:30, and it seemed like a waste to stop working then.
Brittany snapped back into focus and looked around. Her feet had taken her almost all the way to her after-show-secret-hideout, but she frowned to herself. She hadn’t meant to come this way at all. How out of order did her brain have to be to bring her this way? She rocked quickly back and forth on the balls of her feet and thought for a moment. It was just a show, right? Just a show like any other? Then why was she so nervous? Why was she so worried? Why was she acting so weird? She frowned again to herself.
“A lot on your mind?”
The voice behind her nearly made her yelp, but she contained herself, and spun quickly to face it.
Sam Evans had been on the show for less than a year, but he was currently the resident heartthrob, and his abs brought a certain quality to the shirtless scenes, so Lorne was sure to make good use of them. Brittany wasn’t quite sure how she felt about him yet. He had to tendency to make sketches all about him, and was hired after his successful YouTube channel had several viral videos. He wasn’t a stand up comic, and hadn’t been to Second City, so he was a new beast entirely.
Brittany eyed him up and down. “Nothing to concern yourself with, Sam. Shouldn’t you be out vlogging or something?”
She kept her voice light, but there was a bite. She didn’t have anything against the guy, but it didn’t hurt to remind him who had seniority.
“Nah, I’m just working on some killer stuff for this week. Lorne couldn’t get enough of my stoner surfer guy on Update a few weeks ago, so I’m thinking of bringing that back.”
“Yeah, might want to watch out for that, don’t want it getting stale.”
A look of uncertainty crossed over Sam’s face before he spoke up again. “You don’t think it’s weird you’re wandering around on this side of the studio late at night? Not worried about ghosts?”
The last part of his statement came with the hint of a sneer, and Brittany had to keep herself from smiling. She and Artie had spent the better part of a month convincing Sam and Ego Nwadim (the two first years) that the studio was haunted. Ego had been humoring them (nothing wrong with a little hazing to promote team building), but it seemed to Brittany that Sam had actually believed her, and still refused to go in the third floor men’s bathroom alone.
“Whatever, Britt.” Sam said. The uncertainty had slipped away, and the cocky grin returned. “Hey, did you hear? Santana Lopez has sent out invitations for the Host Dinner. I just got mine a few minutes ago.”
He reached into his jacket, pulling out a gorgeous egg shell envelope. He waved it in front of Brittany and with a flash, she had snatched it out of his hands, and was pulling it open.
“Hey! That’s mine.”
She batted his hand away, and pulled the envelope open, removing a document that Brittany could only describe as ‘wedding Invitation fancy’.
“Holy hell. This is amazing.” She breathed, gazing down at the paper.
You Are Cordially Invited To Join Santana Lopez for the Inaugural Host’s Dinner
For Episode 848 of Saturday Night Live
Reservation at 6PM at Hapa
72nd and Columbus Ave.
Be there or be square!
Brittany clasped the note to her chest. “Oh my god.”
Sam’s eyes widened a little. “What’s wrong?”
Brittany sighed a little and smiled tightly. “She’s such a freaking dork!”
With that she raced down the hall, back towards the writer’s offices, doing a joyful leap every so often.
Sam watched her leave curiously. “But that was my invitation.”

Gift for: LeftWingLibrarian, who asked for “Fake dating, bed sharing, first kiss, friends to lovers, basically any fluffy tropes.” I think I hit 3 out of 4 of the above, and got a couple more ideas from your tumblr. I hope I guessed correctly and that you enjoy! Happy Valentines day!
***
“The giant Christmas tree at Rockefeller Plaza?” Adam guessed. “Oooh, or the 30 Rock Tour! Wait, would that still open by the time we got to NYC? Or the observation deck?”
“No, no, and no,” Justin replied. “And those totally count as 3 guesses, so you only have two left.”
“Bro, objection!”
“Overruled, you know the rules. It’s two questions left or game over. Those are your options.”
*
The guesses had begun as they’d left Haus 2.0 earlier that afternoon, as Adam tried unsuccessfully to identify their mystery destination. Justin had kept his plans secret for months, only to have the surprise nearly ruined by Sandeep-From-Coding the day prior. He’d joined them in the Nutrition Nook (yes, that was the actual name their employer used, there was even a distressed-wood chalkboard sign with that name overhanging the corner) during afternoon coffee break, and extended an invite to join the Coding Bros at “the sports bar with the good wings” to watch the Bruins’ game. Justin had declined, citing previously-set plans for Saturday afternoon, then was later forced to admit to Adam that he wasn’t just trying to avoid an intra-office rivalry with Coding by preventing Adam from both arguing the superiority of Buffalo wings to those from any other city and pronouncing that the Sabres would kick the Bruins’ asses, but that he really had made plans he couldn’t divulge. Justin was able to appeal to the D-Man Code to secure 24 hours free from questioning, but as they left Haus 2.0 on foot Adam insisted time was up.
“Dude, all you’ve told me is to ‘dress nice, but not formal,’ you’ve got to tell me more. You’d better not be dragging me to work on our day off.”
Justin swore they weren’t heading to the office, and eventually agreed to Twenty Questions regarding their destination. Adam had tossed out a few wildly varying suggestions as they rode the T downtown (Science Museum. Brewery tour. Aquarium.) and waited for the train at South Station (Going to Samwell to decorate the Haus in epic style while SMH was off on their C&C roadtrip weekend). He pulled out the puppy-dog eyes as they settled into their seats on the train, begging Justin for some scrap of information, and Justin relented to admit “Fine, I can tell you that this is an early Chrismukkah gift since we won’t be together on the 24th.”
After a soliloquy on the importance of the character of Seth Cohen to young-Adam that earned them a glare from the woman seated across from them, the hint led Adam to speculate about Christmas or Hanukkah-related events along the Northeast corridor, ending with the trio of Rockefeller-related guesses.
With the final-questions warning, Adam turned to the window, apparently deep in thought trying to make his final guesses count. The last of the golden-yellow light from the sunset streamed through the window, highlighting his jaw and creating a halo around his blond hair. Fuck, Justin thought, had Holtzy always been this gorgeous? He spent a few minutes appreciating his best bro’s face, momentarily distracting himself from worrying that Adam might not enjoy the surprise after all, as none of his guesses had been remotely correct. Had he misjudged his bro?
As the train briefly stopped at the Samwell station, Justin returned his thoughts to the present and distracted Adam with a conversation about SMH’s season to-date which carried them through until the train approached Providence Station. As they slowed to a stop he stood and grabbed Adam by the arm, tugging him off the train.
“Providence? Are we visiting Jack?” Adam asked as they emerged from the station and headed towards the river.
“The Falcs are in Edmonton tonight. And that was number nineteen. One left.” Justin replied with a smirk before leading them across the river and through the park, following a route he’d carefully chosen on Google Maps to keep their final destination secret. In the dim gap between streetlights Justin surreptitiously patted his jacket pocket, triple-checking that the tickets were still there. They continued to banter as Justin led them through downtown, arriving at the restaurant a few minutes early, though it was already packed. The hostess confirmed their 5:45 reservation, but noted that the table wasn’t yet free before offering them a seat at the bar while they waited.
“So, this coal-fired pizza must be really good to warrant a trip from Boston.” Adam noted after they’d each ordered a beer.
“Google says so,” Justin replied. “And was that your final question?”
“Objection, that was a statement, not a question. I reserve my right to my final question.”
“Sustained. Shitty’s taught you well.”
“Who knew that sharing a Haus with a law-student would come with so many unexpected benefits? And before you ask, that was a rhetorical question unrelated to today’s plans and still doesn’t count for the total.”
Justin laughed and nodded in agreement, before the TV behind the bar caught his attention. The station was replaying Premier League highlights from earlier in the day, and soon they were engrossed in a conversation about Chelsea’s chances for the season. They leaned close together to be heard above the din in the restaurant, and Justin felt a warmth inside, reminded of how lucky he was to have such an amazing BestBroTM.
*
An hour later, Adam leaned back in his chair. “I’m stuffed,” he said, patting his stomach. Together they’d polished off a starter and an entire pizza. “Google was right, Rans, that was amazing.”
“Definitely,” Justin agreed.
“I might order another beer, though. Do you want one, too?” Adam asked.
“That might not be the best idea.”
“For you, or both of us? Wait, was that a clue? Do you have something planned beyond dinner?”
“That’s three questions again, which puts you beyond twenty, so I’ll just answer the first - I meant for both of us.” Justin guessed they’d both lost their tolerance since graduating, as they’d only made it to one Kegster the whole semester, and he didn’t want to risk either of them dozing off midway through the main event. “Maybe coffee would be a better idea?”
“Are we pulling an all-nighter? And I will qualify that question with the note that I am not asking about the surprise itself, merely a health-and-safety question about appropriate beverage consumption. I am, as you know, very safety-conscious.” Adam finished, pressing his right hand over his heart.
Justin laughed. “Sure Holtzy, I believe you. And let the record note,” he continued, trying to match Adam’s serious tone, “that an exemption has been granted. No, I do not anticipate that an all-nighter will be required.”
Adam stroked his chin. “Hmm…”
Justin pulled out his phone as subtly as he could, tapping to check the time, surprised that it was already past 7pm. The time had flown by, as always, as they’d discussed everything from the prospects of their favourite teams in three different leagues to the sitcoms that Adam insisted needed to be moved to the top of their Netflix queue. “However, we do need to head out shortly, so if you do want coffee we should order it soon.”
“Are you getting one?”
“Nah, I’m fine without.” Justin replied. Checking the time had made his anxiety regarding whether Adam would actually enjoy the surprise return with a vengeance and he could already feel his leg twitching; adding caffeine to the mix would not end well.
“Then I’m good, too. Should we get the bill?” Adam asked as he reached for his wallet.
“I got it, bro. It is Chrismukkah, after all.”
*
“Thanks, man,” Adam said, slinging his arm around Justin’s shoulder as they stepped out of the restaurant.
“Got your back, dude,” Justin confirmed, returning the gesture as he wrapped an arm around Adam’s waist and directing their path the remaining few blocks to the PPAC.
As they rounded the final corner and the lights of the marquee came into view, Justin couldn’t resist peeking out of the corner of his eye at Adam. The reflection of the lights sparkled on his glasses, behind which his eyes grew wide as they got close enough to see the crowd in line outside the doors. As they neared the end of the line and were close enough to read the stylized script, Adam stopped abruptly.
“Once? You’re taking me to a musical?”
Justin couldn’t parse Adam’s tone, and his suddenly his heart was racing. “Is that ok? I hoped you’d like it, from the reviews it sounded like a musical rom-com so I thought you would, but I realize now I’ve never heard you sing songs from it so maybe I was wrong?”
“Dude, not wrong.” Adam turned and crushed Justin to himself in a tight hug. “I’ve only seen clips from when it won all those Tony’s, but that doesn’t mean I don’t already love it.” His voice dropped to a near-whisper in Justin’s ear, “Best Chrismukkah gift ever. Really.”
Justin let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding as he relaxed in Adam’s arms. After months of anticipation and planning and keeping this a secret (even doing all of his research in incognito mode so that his browser history and targeted ads couldn’t give things away if Adam borrowed his laptop), everything had worked out. They were at the theatre, his Best Bro was happy. It was all worth it, and the show hadn’t even started.
Adam relaxed his hold on Justin. “I can’t believe you kept this secret from me! I never would have guessed, really, even if it was Sixty Questions.”
Justin smirked and waggled his eyebrows as they joined the line of excited patrons.
*
Ten minutes later, they’d made their way inside, visited the washrooms, and found their seats.
“These are amazing seats, Rans, we’re so close to the stage! Wait, is that an actual bar on the stage?”
“Yup. Still want that beer? We can go up and grab drinks if you’d like.”
“Tempting, but I don’t want to forget a second of this. Did you know I’ve only seen one live musical before, not counting my sisters’ school productions, which do not count.”
“I might have heard something about the life-changing experience of seeing Rent when you were in grade 11…” Justin said with a smirk.
“Grade 11? What is this foreign language I hear? I was a junior, and …” Adam’s argument trailed off as one person after another wandered to centre-stage holding instruments and beginning to play. “Wha…?”
Justin nodded. “Pre-show music, that’s why I may have rushed to get us here.”
“How did you know about this?”
“Dude, how dare you doubt my research abilities!”
“Apologies. You are now, and forevermore, the king of research and spreadsheets,” Adam acknowledged with a head bow and hand flourish, before turning to watch the pub party breaking out on-stage. Musicians congregated amidst the crowds hovering around the bar, dancing and playing folk tunes. Adam watched, a giant grin on his face. “I’ve heard there’s no orchestra, all the music is played on-stage by the cast. Can you imagine?”
“Yeah!” Justin nodded. Adam’s enthusiasm was infectious.
After several rousing songs, the lights dimmed, and the audience returned to their seats. Soon the stage was dark, with the light focused on a single musician strumming his guitar. The show had begun.
Throughout the first act, Justin felt his attention split between the amazing performance on stage and Adam’s reactions. He watched out of the corner of his eye as Adam tapped his feet along with the performers dancing on tables, laughed along with their jokes, or wiped a tear away as the Girl sang a wistful solo alone at the piano. As the lights rose again at intermission, Justin turned to see Adam staring at the stage, still mesmerized after the whole cast of musicians had joined a group song-and-dance number at the pub. “So? Enjoying the show so far?”
Adam took a deep breath, as if his pulling his soul to rejoin his body, before turning to Justin. “Enjoying it? Rans, there are not enough words to express how I feel about the power of music to stir human emotion.”
“That good, eh?”
“Good enough that I won’t mock you for saying ‘eh.’”
“How about the power of cookies?” Justin asked as he recognized the smell of baked goods wafting through the theatre. “The internet says that getting a chocolate chip cookie during intermission here is, like, required.”
Adam lauged, “Well, if it’s a requirement. We can’t let the internet down, after all.”
“Never!” Justin agreed.
*
An hour and a bit later, after the auditorium had erupted in applause and the cast took their final bows, Justin sat in silence, staring at the stage. Was that how it ended, no magical reconnection but a bittersweet parting? He couldn’t explain it to himself, but it felt like a personal loss. A loud sniff to his left caught his attention, and he turned in time to see Adam wiping his eyes on the sleeve of his button-down. Justin dug the cookie-napkin from his pocket and passed it over so that Adam could blow his nose properly.
“Thank you, Rans.”
“No problem.”
“No, man. Not for the napkin, or, well, not just for that, but for all of this,” Adam waved his hand about. “Dinner. The show. Everything. This was one of the best nights of my life, Justin.” Adam fixed him with an intense look that Justin couldn’t interpret before reaching to grab his hand in a firm grasp.
“You’re welcome … got your back … always.” Justin squeezed Adam’s hand back, hoping it would express some of the feeling that he couldn’t put into words.
They sat like that for a few beats before Adam pulled back. “I could sit here forever, but I guess the ushers wouldn’t appreciate that.” He looked around, just noticing that most of the audience in their section had already cleared out. “Wait, do we need to get to the station? Isn’t the last train soon?”
“It leaves in five minutes,” Justin replied. “But I didn’t want to rush you, so Jack said we could spend the night at his place.”
“Bro, you’re the best,” Adam said, leaning over the armrest to rest his head on Justin’s shoulder for a minute longer, before they stood and un-pretzeled themselves from the tiny seats. “Dude, these seats were not made for D-men. Were people in 1920-whatever a lot shorter?”
Mood lightened, they shrugged into their jackets and left the theatre. The temperature had dropped to just above freezing, but both preferred to walk, so they tucked their hands in their pockets and headed towards Jack’s building. They were quieter than their usual, rarely speaking but occasionally bumping shoulders or elbows, each lost in thought.
*
Justin was glad to see DeShawn was the doorman on duty when they arrived, as he’d met them often and was unlikely to create a fuss about non-residents asking for admittance. Sure enough, he greeted them warmly and handed over the keyfob Jack had left at the desk in Justin’s name. They rode the elevator in silence, and let themselves into Jack’s apartment, before dropping their shoes and jackets in the hallway closet.
“Do you want anything to eat?” Justin asked, waving a note he’d found on the pool table. “Jack says there are muffins and mini-pies from Bitty in the freezer, and to help ourselves.”
“I’m good, thanks, maybe in the morning?” Adam said. “But go ahead if you’re hungry.”
“Nah, man, I’m still full of pizza. What happened to us? Less than a year away from competitive hockey and our stomachs must have shrunk, now that we aren’t burning thousands of calories a day skating.”
Adam rolled his eyes and let out a half-hearted laugh.
“Are you tired, bro? I stashed some of our stuff here last time,” Justin said, as he led the way into the guest room, dug the duffle bag out of the closet, and dropped it on the bed. He pulled out a bundle of his clothes and toiletries and passed the rest of the bag to Adam.
Adam dug through the bag. “My old Bruins shirt, I wondered where I’d left that.” He then pulled out the small bag of toiletries. “You even packed my spare contact case? Bro!”
“Excel said there was a 30% chance you’d wear contacts today, so ..” Justin shrugged, “Got your back.”
“You always do. And I’ve got yours. Always,” Adam said, quiet and intense. It sounded like a vow, Justin thought, before Adam broke their fixed look with a shake of his head, and turned to the bathroom.
Moments later, Justin returned to drop his clothes on the guest room chair, and found Adam was already settled against the pillows, glasses propped on the bedside table. Justin hovered at the foot of the bed, suddenly uncertain. He realized then that as he’d planned this weekend, without making a conscious decision he’d visualized the two of them sharing the guest bed, but was that ok to want? To ask for?
Adam interrupted before his thoughts could spiral, “Dude, get in here.”
“Is that ok, bro? I could crash on the couch.”
“How many times did we share the bottom bunk when the Haus ghosts interrupted your dreams? I think there’s room in a Queen bed for us both, comfortably. But you’re getting the lights. You know the rules, you’re the last one standing.”
“Ghosts aren’t real!” Justin shot back automatically, yet he still moved as fast as he could across the dark floor to hop into the warm bed. He shuffled, determining the most comfortable spot on a new mattress as he listened to Adam’s steady breathing next to him. It felt so good to share a room again, as if a piece of himself that was missing slotted back into place. This was home, he realized, and he didn’t ever want to leave or grow apart. But what if they did, he thought. Isn’t that what happens to college friends, they eventually grow apart? Unbidden, a lyric from the show came to mind “you’ll be just a man, once I used to know…” and he knew he didn’t want that to be true. He didn’t need to run the pros and cons or compile spreadsheets, it was an immutable fact. He wanted to spend the rest of his life right here, Ransom-and-Holster, together. Before he could get lost in questioning what to say, Justin took the plunge, turning on his side.
“Holtzy … Adam? I’ve gotta say something.” He reached out, tentatively reaching out until his fingers hit what felt like Adam’s elbow. He took a deep breath and continued, “You’re the most important person in my life, and I think you always will be. I don’t want us to grow apart, or for you to be that guy I once knew that I tell stories about. You’re my person. Wait, is that a line from one of your shows? Nevermind, don’t answer that, because if I stop I might not be able to say what I need to say, and that is that I love you. Like, I am in love with you. And I may have only just realized that, but it’s the absolute truth.” In the faint glow created by the lights from the city below he could see Adam’s eyes widening as Justin spoke, mouth gaping like a fish. “Is that okay? Did I just ruin everything?”
“No!” Adam flipped towards him, clutching onto Justin’s sleeve. “You didn’t ruin anything. Did  - do - do you really mean that?”
Justin nodded, tilting his head closer, “I really do.”
“Because I’ve been in love with you forever, but I didn’t think you would ever feel that way, so I kept it to myself.” Adam shrugged, causing his arm to move under Justin’s hand.
“I’m sorry I kept you waiting. But I’m here now,” Justin added, trailing his fingertips up Adam’s arm until he reached his jaw. Their faces were only centimetres apart now. He slid his hand further along the side of Adam’s head, thumb stroking his cheek. “Can I?”
Adam bridged the remaining gap between them, pressing their lips together in a soft kiss. One kiss became another as they melted into one another, Adam’s arm reaching across Justin’s back to pull him close. Soft and sweet became deep and passionate before ebbing back again like a tide. This feels right, Justin thought, pulling back just enough so they could look at one another again in the dim light. His hands cradled Adam’s face, thumbs brushing against the stubble on his jaw as he felt the warmth of his cheeks and wondered if Adam’s face looked as flushed as it felt. That was an appealing thought, Justin realized, as he dipped forward again to plant a soft kiss on one cheek. “Ok?”
“So very ok,” Adam confirmed as he shifted onto his back, tugging Justin with him.
Justin happily snuggled into place, his nose pressed against Adam’s neck with Adam’s arm warm across his back. I’m home, was his last thought as he drifted into a peaceful sleep.

390. Fire at 30 Rock and how Conan handled it (October 10 & 11th, 1996)
Tumblr media
I kind of wanted to commemorate Conan’s 10th anniversary of being the short-lived host of The Tonight Show here somehow, and this is the butt-backwards day I’m doing it.
Tumblr media
In October of 1996, fire broke out at Rockefeller Center, where most of the news and talk programs at NBC have their studios. I vaguely remember this being reported on television that morning and tuning into the Today show to see how they were handling it, because you know, you can’t run a repeat of the Today show. I seem to remember Bryant Gumbel and Katie Couric outside? I can’t find clips of it anywhere online, because back then people didn’t record out of the ordinary things like this. Nobody really records the Today show unless someone they like is on there that day.
''This is my office today,'' said Jeffrey A. Zucker, executive producer of ''Today,'' leaning on a Fire Department car on 49th Street, where Ms. Couric and Matt Lauer, filling in for Bryant Gumbel, were broadcasting.
The program's set is normally a windowed studio on 49th Street. But Mr. Zucker could not use graphics, commercials and other tapes stored at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, and the program moved into the street in an act of solidarity with displaced colleagues. The horde of tourists who usually line the ''Today'' windows were behind barriers a block away, where they waved and held up signs.
The studioless ''Rosie O'Donnell'' and ''Maureen O'Boyle'' talk shows were canceled, disappointing hundreds of ticket-waving fans. Network programs for 215 NBC affiliates were broadcast from Burbank, Calif. ''The NBC Nightly News'' with Tom Brokaw was shifted to Washington.
Executives of ''Dateline NBC,'' a news magazine broadcast three days a week, held staff meetings in the street, as did executives of NBC Sports, who were planning a weekend of coverage that included Yankee-Oriole games, football games and other events. Beepers and cellular phones were highly visible. 1
(The Internet Archive also has these eps as well on this playlist, look for 10/10/1996 and 10/11/1996)
Tumblr media
The October 10th episode (part 1, part 2, part 3,  part 4 )  start with this extreme close-up of Conan.
“We could put together a new show, but ten e wouldn’t be able to maintain our unusually high standards of broadcasting excellence. So instead folks, please enjoy this rerun.”
[His producer whispers in Conan’s ear]
“...WHAT. WE DON’T GET PAID UNLESS WE DO A SHOW?! ALRIGHT, LET’S THROW TOGETHER ANY OL’ CRAP. WE’LL DO IT ON THE STREET. WHO CARES. COME ON PEOPLE, LET’S GO.”
Tumblr media
I died laughing when instead of Conan’s usual theme, we saw just news footage of the firetrucks at 30 Rock at 4am that morning, and other stock footage of fires.
Tumblr media
Apparently all of Conan’s suits were locked in the studio, because he went casual tonight. But yet his furniture and his Eisenhower Mug made it downstairs.
I’m a little podunk who lives out in the middle of nowhere in Virginia. I only know this part of Rockefeller Center from when the NBC Nightly News with Lester zooms out at the end of the show during the winter and you see the skaters skating near the gold statue? Yeah, I’m one of those people who don’t know squat about NYC.
Conan’s audience looks like it was people just strolling by on their way home from work. They’re pretty dressed up to see Late Night. Conan compares them to a crowd of bystanders at an accident. Whenever he showed a clip, the audience couldn’t see it because there’s no TVs, so the audience watched Conan & Andy show a clip of O.J. Simpson from The Towering Inferno but they had no clue what they were clapping about.  At one point in part 3, two people randomly walk behind Conan and Andy headed to dinner.
Conan even managed to find a place for Max Weinberg and his band too. I think they’re sitting on folding chairs. They play fire themed songs!  I miss Max. Has he ever been on Conan’s TBS show? *YouTube search intensifies* Yes! Yes he has!
Tumblr media
Oh man, I forgot about Oldy Oldeson! I also forgot about the illustrated jokes the show used to do back then:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Conan and Andy walk mere steps over to Brookstone(s) to find a gift for tonight’s guest, Samuel L. Jackson. Remember Brookstone? Such a throwing-around-money-in-the-late-90s store. I had to Google it to see if they were still around. No more stores in malls, but they still have airport stores. Huh.
btw, Samuel loved the chair.  He said that Andy was wearing “Crippled People Shoes”. This also happened:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tomari the ostrich delivered Conan an egg with the guests for tomorrow night’s show inside. Boy, I thought they had retired her by that point.
Tumblr media
Chris Kattan came by and talked about his character I love so much, Kippy Strug, Kerri Strug’s brother. They couldn’t show that clip, but I’m sure if it was a normal show they would have. Chris did an impression of his dad watching Splash.
Tumblr media
There was an giant owl there too that didn’t want any meat. Maybe he was scared by Tomari.
Tumblr media
The following day, the show (part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4) started with the same extreme closeup of Conan. Joel announces the show as, “From next door from the burned out hulk of Rockefeller Center, it’s Late Night With Conan O’Brien!”
omg, Getty Images have these great press photos of Conan and baby Andy in their little sweater vests on the Today set:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That’s Conan’s longtime producer, Jeff __ .
Tumblr media
Andy looks like a toddler.
Tumblr media
I kept hearing a baby in the background and was thinking it was some sort of joke, that all they could get for an audience was a baby due to the slap-dash nature, and I was kinda right:
Tumblr media
Conan brought in a family to watch the show from inside the studio.
Tumblr media
Oldy is back tonight with the news.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eric Idle comes by on his way to the airport. “They said I would be out of here by now, Conan.” He also sings a song about shopping, with is 100% accurate.
Tumblr media
More news with Oldy.
Tumblr media
Dang, Oldy sitting in Matt Lauer’s old chair, foretelling the future. You go, Oldy.
Tumblr media
They snoop on Bryant Gumbel’s locker. Is that a joke on how bland he was?
Tumblr media
Also voodoo dolls because never forget he’s a jerk who hates everybody.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aw, Conan fed Oldy some bread.
Tumblr media
I just realized. My icon this month (if you’re on Tumblr dash and its still June 2019 look to your left)  is Lorne Michals rescuing Jon Lovitz from a fictional fire at 30 Rock during the 1986 season finale of SNL. I didn’t plan it that way I swear.

Sunday 2/6:
Sunday was my last day in NYC and it was bittersweet. This weekend was a short little trip but it meant so much to me. I am moving to New York in the fall and this trip served as my "trial run" before I fully committed. I was able to spend some alone time on Sunday which allowed me to relish New Yorks's beauty. It was inspiring and comforting. Ella and I got smoothies before she headed to work at 11. I headed uptown to the Aritzia near Rockefeller center. After I did some shopping, I went to find a restroom before going to Central Park. I explored Rockefeller plaza and tried Blue Bottle Coffee for the first time. I was feeling lazy so I took an Uber to Bethesda Terrace in Central Park. I spent some time there and walked around. I came across a lady doing "Poetry for Strangers.' Funny enough, I had seen her go viral on Tik Tok. Of course, I got a poem. She asked me what was the inspiration behind the poem should be and I told her about my upcoming move to the city and how 2022 is the year of new challenges. She wrote me a beautiful poem that I will cherish for the rest of my life. I gave her $10 for her time. It was time to leave the park as I needed to be back to the apartment at 2:30. I was running way behind and forgot to get my friend a thank you gift. I took an Uber to Aritzia and got her a gift. At this point, it was 3:20 and I was so behind. I raced back to her apartment and packed up my bags. I dropped her keys off at her work and decided to take an hour to the airport. Thankfully, I got to the airport with plenty of time to spare. I got some dinner before boarding my flight. After a long and uncomfortable flight, I was finally back home and ready for bed.

LYING IN STATE! Jackie Kennedy and her five-year-old daughter Caroline kneel at the coffin of President John F. Kennedy after he was assassinated on November 22, 1963. An estimated 250,000 people paid their respects as the president lay in state at the U.S. Capitol for 21 hours.

WHITE WATER! Forceful winds turn the Río Paine into white water in Chile's Torres del Paine National Park. While Patagonia remains one of the wildest places on earth, such fast rivers could be a tempting source of hydropower.

KING TUT! In this photo from the September 2010 issue, visitors swarm around King Tutankhamun's funerary mask in Cairo's Egyptian Museum. Created out of gold and decorated with colored glass and gemstones, it was placed on King Tut's mummy after his death in 1323 B.C. British archaeologist Howard Carter discovered the tomb in 1922, sparking worldwide interest in ancient Egypt.

WESTERN WALL, OCCUPIED PALESTINE! As dawn breaks in Jerusalem, hundreds of God’s Fucked-up People, The Zionist Smelly Cunts, gather at the Western Wall. Workers atop the 70-story RCA building in New York's Rockefeller Centre lunch on a steel beam overlooking the city in 1932 (30 Rockefeller plaza) by Charles C. Ebbets.
This black and white image portrays 11 men enjoying their lunch break atop a steel beam on the 70th floor of 30 Rockefeller plaza In New York City. It is titled “Lunch atop a Skyscraper” and it was photographed by Charles Clyde Ebbets in 1932. It was published as publicity for the Rockefeller Centre, making this an example of photojournalism. On the far left, we have a man helping his coworker light a cigarette, and the rest of the men are just chit-chatting, enjoying their lunches, one without a shirt in the middle, letting their feet dangle from above. What strikes me most about this infamous image is the fact that none of them look the least bit concerned, nor fearful of falling. It’s as though being 3 feet off the ground or 1000 feet would be the same to them.
One of the elements of art evident in this picture, is the use of negative space. There is nothing surrounding these men. They are quite literally dangling midair over a beautiful, hazy NYC. Without much in the foreground, the depth is really well communicated and makes it almost feel as if we, the viewer, could just fall right down into the picture. This picture wouldn't feel nearly exciting if there was a closer background, and we didn't have that illusion. Another beautiful use of an element of art in this photo is the steel beam as a line, guiding our eyes across the frame. Whether we start in the middle, on the left, on the right, our eye go side to side, following that beam and forces us to look at each worker individually as we slide across the photo, following that line.
The fog over the city that day was perfect for this photo, as it really emphasizes the main focal point of the scene, contrasting light and dark. The workers sat atop the beam have a much darker, higher contrast with their background that really does make them stand out. Not to mention, the focus being on them as well as the city beneath them is slightly blurred, this acts as a framing mechanism. Another thing I noticed with this picture is the repetition. Many of the men are wearing news caps, overalls, have the same big white lunchbox, and are wearing similar shoes. It’s really like they said “same guy, different font.”
All in all, this is a gorgeous, timeless photo of what most people would consider a near-death experience, but these men are just chillin’ having a smoke and a bite to eat. I honestly never thought twice about this photo before doing this assignment. I mean, yeah, it’s pretty cool, but I didn't realize the significance of it before digging a little deeper and doing some research with my analysis. This is art. It is so much more complex than I had originally anticipated, and I now have a newfound appreciation for the art that hangs on the wall in my local belle province.

27 hours in the SNL standby line for dress rehearsal 9/30/17
Scroll down for standby tips, a list of things you might need, and places you may need to visit for standby!
Here is a description of the timing of waiting in standby:
@myloveholtzy and I have been planning for this for weeks and the time had finally come! I was lucky enough to have my Friday class cancelled so I could go back to the city early enough to guarantee a good spot in line. It’s Thursday night and we’re packing our things anxiously, even laying out cardboard that @myloveholtzy had been saving for weeks for this very day to see if it was enough room to sit and lay down. We try to get some sleep. It felt like a second later when the alarm went off and I jolted up in bed, confused but ready to go. 3:00 AM.
We leave her apartment at 3:40 to catch the train to Rockefeller plaza. We get there at 4:20 and there are only 7 people in line. Our chances look pretty good. Most of the standbyers are asleep so we lay down our cardboard, set up a pillow and blankets and try to sleep. This is going to be our home for the next 27 hours.
Tumblr media
It’s a funny thing camping outside on the streets. Everyone wakes up about the same time, as if we were at a sleep-away camp. There’s a sense of camaraderie, we’re all braving the cold for the very same purpose.
Slowly, people start arriving and setting up camp in line. By 5:00 AM, there are a total of 12 people in line. The rest of the city starts to wake up, there are more cars whizzing by, more people speeding by with coffee in their hands.
We fall asleep again and wake up at around 8:00 AM. There are 16 people in line. We watch movies and talk and meet new people in line and answer tourist questions, so many tourist questions. By 11:00 AM, there are almost 30 people.
We eat a lot of McDonalds and answer some more tourist questions. Then we are stricken with a genius idea (that’s what happens when you’re in the same place for so long, your mind is a wonder). We make signs to avoid the common tourist questions. It’s a huge hit! All of a sudden, people congregate around our signs and we get a laugh out of them. It’s a wonderful feeling and they ask more interesting questions besides the usual “What’s this line for?”. We get so many gasps of “Ryan Gosling!” and an SNL intern even stopped to take a picture of our sign! Our signs made it to Twitter too, this is my legacy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By 5:30 PM, there are about 40 people in line. The day is starting to wind down. We watch more movies and talk more about anything and everything.
More waiting and talking and movies and napping. We are moved to a different spot as the other line for Nintendo starts to wind down. At around 9, we are moved again to our final spot.
We go visit Rockefeller at around 10:30 PM and saw Beck probably going back to rehearsal!
It’s sleep time but there’s a shit ton of jack hammering. No, not just jack hammering, full on earth shattering drilling. I wonder how I’m ever going to sleep.
By now, there are almost 100 people in line. I bundle up and try to sleep.
We start waking up at around 5 the next morning. My body is folded into a position I never thought I could achieve just to avoid the cold. At 6, we start packing up our things. We made it. We did it.
Tumblr media
Pages come out at around 7 to give us our tickets. Finally.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We victoriously take pictures of our tickets; this little piece of blue card stock was our first place trophy. But it was not over yet. We go home, take long hot showers and collapse into deep sleep.
We run back to Rockefeller plaza and arrive at 6:50 PM where we have to wait in the NBC store. There is a crowd of people packed like sardines. The pages line us up in order of our ticket numbers. We rejoice at the sight of our fellow standbyers. The line legend lady tells us stories of how she’s kicked line cutters out of the line and how different the system used to be. What a legend.
Finally, we are moved to a staircase behind the NBC store. Through the window, we see Richard, an Australian guy and an all around nice person who was 2 spots in front of us in standby. He is on line for the live show. We line up in twos and Line Legend Lady tells us more stories. We laugh off the nervousness and her ambience makes us feel better, she’s done this for 10 years so she’s chill about the whole process.
They move us up the stairs but there is still no guarantee of getting in. We arrive at the elevators and I sneak a Fallon-style picture of the elevator floors. Finally, we’re in line near the lounge but we’re standby, we don’t get to sit in the lounge this time. We get closer to the studio, I can hear 8H commotion, a page collects our tickets and it hits me. We’re in studio 8H. Pages rush us to our balcony seats, I am in the right section, close enough to watch the show with some lights in the way. It is hard to see some skits below us but it’s ok, it was all worth it.
The rest is self explanatory but here are some highlights that weren’t in the live show:
Melissa, Cecily and Kate doing the warm ups. Kate turns to our section twice and waves at us.
Kate holding Melissa’s hands and pulling her along after the warm ups. It was Melissa’s first warm up.
Kate crawling on the ground to pop up as Jeff Sessions in the cold open.
Emma Stone showing up during Ryan’s monologue.
The elephant man sketch was cut, it was kind of weird (kate as an air flight attendee and Leslie saying ‘bitch’ were great, the rest of the sketch was funny but not as funny).
An auto line sketch was cut, it was borderline creepy (beck plays a window shield repair man who removes their window shield repeatedly to hit on Melissa who plays a 17 year old high school soccer player).
Kate as Angela Merkel waiting behind the black screens next to weekend update, watching Colin and Michael supportingly and laughing hard at their jokes.
Ryan shaking as Kate feels his butt, trying to hold in his laughter.
Kyle pretending to play piano in the bar sketch but stopping before the music ends, garnering more laughter than the actual sketch.
Kate pulling the new cast members to the front in the goodnights. Everyone hugging. The goodnights are my favorite part.
Apparently Beyonce and Ryan’s gf were at the show. And now I know Aziz was also there. Wow.
Now for some tips if you want to do standby:
The line is normally on 48th street in front of the Nintendo store. There will be an NBC guard there so you can ask if you’re unsure about whether you’re in the right place or not. Or just look for at least one person in a camping chair with huge bags and probably coffee. (I say “normally” because that day happened to be a huge Nintendo release so there was a long ass line for Nintendo and we were moved multiple times).
NO CUTTING Line Legend Lady makes this very clear seriously talk to her she’s short and has black hair and glasses and is very approachable to talk to. This goes along with NO SAVING SPOTS pretty self explanatory.
The line is self governed. You’re allowed to leave for bathroom breaks or walks as long as you’re not leaving to go sleep in a hotel bed or whatever (aka don’t leave for more than 2 hours just to be safe)
If you suspect people cutting/saving spots, tell the line legend lady and guards. They’re pretty strict about it. This might sound scary but it’s not, honestly just follow the rules and you’ll have a great time
Talk to the people around you! You’re there for HOURS plus these people are (usually) some of the nicest people around. If you happen to spot any of the line legends: Chris or the Line Legend Lady, talk to them! They have so many stories. Chris has done it ~104 episodes consecutively and Line Legend Lady has done it for 10 years. There’s another line legend lady but I didn’t get a chance to really talk to her, she has gray curly hair and smiled at me once so she seems really nice!

NBC Tower, Chicago
The NBC Tower is an office tower on the Near North Side of Chicago, located at 454 North Columbus Drive (455 North Cityfront Plaza is also used as a vanity address for the building) in downtown Chicago's Magnificent Mile area. Completed in 1989, the 37-story building reaches a height of 627 feet (191 m).
The design, by Adrian D. Smith of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, is considered one of the finest reproductions of the Art Deco style. It was inspired by 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City, NBC's headquarters.
The building, located in the Cityfront Plaza area, contains 850,000 sq ft (79,000 m2) of space and three floors of underground parking with 261 spaces. Connected to the main tower is a four-story radio and television broadcasting facility where popular shows such as Judge Mathis, Steve Harvey and WSNS's newscasts and WMAQ's newscasts are currently taped, and was the former recording facility for The Jerry Springer Show and The Steve Wilkos Show before their tax credit-influenced move to Stamford, Connecticut in 2009. It was also home to the 90's syndicated improv/sketch show Kwik Witz, and The Jenny Jones Show until its cancellation in 2003.

New York City is one of the most fascinating cities in the world. Love it or hate it, it can’t be denied that this city has everything anyone could ever ask for— a glorious harbour, spacious parks and greenery, 24-hour food and activities, towering skyscrapers offering stunning views, plentiful entertainment—and the list doesn’t end there.
However, because there is so much to do, it can be hard to figure out how to make the most of your time and finances. There are several things I’ve discovered over a few trips to New York, which would have been helpful to know before I set foot in such a large and diverse city.
To help you plan your trip, I’ve put together some tips on what I wish I had known about New York’s unique hidden and not-so-hidden gems before I visited.
New York is one of the world’s biggest cities, so a visit requires planning.
1. Coffee
Many people know that New York is crawling with coffee shops. But if you consider yourself something of a coffee connoisseur, you might be looking for somewhere offering more than just the average cup of joe. Funnily enough, Joe is one of the finest coffee spots scattered around New York that offers unique blends and flavours. Stumptown Coffee also comes highly recommended by coffee lovers but has just two locations. Joe is more accessible, offering 15 stores in Manhattan and 2 in Brooklyn. They’re scattered fairly regularly throughout the city, ensuring there is usually one nearby.
There is even a store in Grand Central Terminal, making it an easy stop on the way to wherever you are headed. While Stumptown Coffee is less accessible, it is definitely worth the trip. One café is located in the Ace Hotel New York right near the famous Flat Iron District, and the other is near Greenwich Village situated at 30 W 8th Street.
Check out Joe New York’s website and Stumptown’s website for a map of their respective locations and more information on opening hours.
A good coffee spot is a must when in NYC.
2. The High Line
Starting on Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District, the High Line is a linear park built on New York’s historic, elevated railroad. At first, I thought it was merely one of the ways to easily get from A to B in the city, all while taking in some great views. Therefore, I didn’t allow much time in my schedule for just enjoying the experience.
While it does serve the purpose of a convenient walkway, it is also one of the city’s public parks. Apart from getting stunning views of the city, you will also encounter beautiful flowers and plants growing through the old railway lines, as well as market and food stalls situated in various spots along the way. Be prepared to take your time, just wander and explore some of the other activities it has to offer. In total, the High Line stretches for 1.45 miles or 2.33 km, ending at West 34th Street between 10th and 12th avenues. There are many different entrances and exits along the way, so you don’t have to worry about entering at one spot and having to continue the entire length of the park.
Like most public parks, it doesn’t cost anything but it does close at night. It is best to check out the closing times online here because even though it always opens at 7 am, the closing times differ depending on the season.
The High Line is a lesser-known public park to consider. Image by: Exploration Hawaii
3. The Statue of Liberty
Planning a visit to the Statue of Liberty usually conjures up images of crowds of people, long lines, intense security checks and of course spending quite a bit of money. In my experience, these images are completely accurate. If you are interested in getting up close and personal with Lady Liberty you can visit Liberty Island, with the option of also visiting Ellis Island along the way.
You can then choose whether you want to visit the base of the statue, known as the pedestal, or walk up 162 narrow steps to the crown. There are certain items such as backpacks, laptops and tripods which you can’t take through, so lockers are available for hire at an extra cost. However, if you don’t have a lot of time or aren’t dying to get that close to the Statue of Liberty, the Staten Island Ferry is an easy alternative. It runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is completely free. You get to head out onto New York Harbor, taking in sweeping views of the city, while sailing past the Statue of Liberty.
The trip only takes about 25 minutes each way and runs regularly throughout the day. If you are solely heading out on the ferry to go past the statue and not wanting to stay in Staten Island, it is good to know that you can’t stay on for the round trip. You can travel back immediately, you just have to disembark and get right back on again. Make sure you check out their website for up-to-date schedules.
The ferry takes you onto the New York Harbor, so you can see the Statue of Liberty.
4. Broadway show
If you don’t spend at least one night on Broadway, you haven’t really experienced New York. Some tickets are very expensive, but if you don’t have a specific show in mind there are cheap tickets available for various productions.
The Theatre Development Fund is a not-for-profit organisation that runs TKTS Discount Booths. These booths offer same-day heavily discounted tickets to various Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. They are usually fairly busy, so it is a good idea to get there as early as you can to avoid long lines.
Even if you do have to wait a while, it is worth getting 20-50% off regular ticket prices. The most popular TKTS booth is in Times Square, but there are also three other outlets throughout the city. Visit here for more information and to check out specific times and locations.
You can get affordable tickets for shows at the TKTS booths.
5. Breakfast at Tiffany’s
If you’re heading to Central Park and the Upper East Side from Manhattan’s Theatre District, strolling along Fifth Avenue is the way to go. While it boasts high-end brands such as Henri Bendel, Louis Vuitton, Armani and the famous Plaza Hotel, favourites such as Zara, H&M, Forever 21 and MAC can also be found along this famous shopping strip.
None of these stores, however, can compare with Tiffany & Co., New York’s finest jeweller. Founded in 1837, Fifth Avenue’s Tiffany & Co. is the company’s flagship store and was featured in Audrey Hepburn’s classic film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Up until recently, if you wanted to actually have breakfast at Tiffany’s, it would have looked like chewing on a cream cheese bagel from the street while staring at the window displays.
Now, however, Tiffany & Co. on Fifth Avenue has just opened up their very own café called The Blue Box Café. Because it is still fairly new and very popular, you must have a reservation to visit. Reservations can be made online through the events section here.
Don’t get in too early though—you can only book 30 days in advance. Also, it is good to be aware that the menu is constantly changing, depending on the season. The café is open from 10 am to 5:30 pm Monday to Saturday and 12 pm – 4:30 pm on Sundays.
A stroll down Fifth Avenue isn’t to be missed.
6. Central Park
Lose yourself in the beauty of this 843-acre park, right in the heart of Manhattan. One minute you’ll be looking up at skyscrapers towering above the trees. The next, as you venture deeper into the serenity of the park you’ll be wondering if the surrounding city has ceased to exist. There are so many beautiful places to visit in Central Park. These include Bethesda Terrace and Fountain, The Loeb Boathouse, Belvedere Castle and the Central Park Zoo.
Even if you haven’t been to New York before, these locations might start to seem a little familiar. Central Park is one of the most popular filming locations in the world for movies and TV shows. You might remember the beautiful Loeb Boathouse restaurant from romantic comedies like 27 Dresses or When Harry Met Sally or the Belvedere Castle in The Smurfs movie as Gargamel’s secret headquarters. The Bethesda Fountain is the location of a large musical number in Disney’s Enchanted, which boasts filming locations throughout much of the city.
Other movies which offer glimpses of Central Park include Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Spiderman 3, Elf and The Avengers. There are a few tour companies that provide an official movie tour through the park if you want to know more. Otherwise, entering from either the West 59th Street end or the West 110th Street and wandering through to the end will help you cover most of these iconic locations.
You might spot some familiar locations when visiting Central Park.
7. One World Trade Centre
The Empire State Building and Rockefeller Centre both offer amazing views of the city buildings. However, the new One World Trade Centre at Ground Zero offers beautiful views from a different angle of the city. Gaze down at the touching September 11 memorial fountains, or across the city skyline to the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings.
Below the tower, you can also admire the new World Trade Centre subway station. However, as with most of the towers offering viewing platforms in NYC, the line for tickets is usually quite long and almost put me off. Thankfully a worker came past, encouraging people to buy tickets online so we could go straight through instead of waiting. As a tourist, I was thankful there was free wifi available so I could immediately make my purchase. I was then able to go straight through and up to the viewing platform, all in under 30 minutes.
When you are there, just head here on your smartphone or device, and choose the next available time to purchase your ticket and avoid any long queues.
The One World Trade Centre at Ground Zero is not to be missed.
8. Times Square
Although it’s crowded with tourists, cabs, and buskers – this feast for the eyes has to be visited at least once. Stand on the red steps under the Coca-Cola billboard and marvel at the abundance of bright, flashing advertisements.
You can expect to fight your way through the crowds, get your portrait sketched on the street, have a photo with Elmo, a cowboy or a Disney character, and just bask in the chaos that is Times Square. However, also be prepared to possibly run into a celebrity. Times Square is another popular filming location in New York, making it a hive for both fans and celebs. Times Square also plays host to countless musical performances by musicians such as Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry.
The popular restaurants Planet Hollywood and Hard Rock Café are also in Times Square and are regularly visited by celebrities. Not to mention the Broadway stars who usually delight their fans by taking selfies and signing autographs outside the theatre after a show. Check out the website here for any upcoming events and see if any of your favourite stars might be in town when you are there.
You might be lucky enough to spot a celebrity in Times Square.
9. Dumbo, Brooklyn
One of New York’s most ‘Instagrammable’ spots is in Dumbo, Brooklyn. I had seen these beautiful pictures of the Empire State building peeking through the Manhattan Bridge all over social media, but I never quite knew exactly how to get to the picturesque location. A big clue is actually in the name itself, as DUMBO stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass.
With a bit of research, I was finally able to make my way to Dumbo to find this hidden gem. The location you want to get to is the intersection of Water Street and Washington Street in Dumbo, Brooklyn. The nearest subway station is York Street on the F, Orange line. You can easily get there from the Rockefeller Centre Station if you are coming from Manhattan.
From there it is just a short walk down to the famous photo spot. You can also continue walking through the charming cobbled streets of Dumbo to the water’s edge. There you can gaze up, not only at the Manhattan skyline but at both the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges.
You may have spotted this picturesque location on social media.
10. Comedy show
Comedy shows are a New York staple. There are so many comedy clubs scattered around the Times Square area, and countless people selling tickets on the street. It can be hard to decide who to see, especially when being pressured on the street to purchase discount tickets.
If seeing a good comedy show is something you’re interested in, I recommend doing research beforehand. I ended up in an underground comedy club on the spur of the moment, spending money on a show I didn’t really enjoy.
Gotham Comedy Club is one of the best clubs in the city. It’s got a good mix of both well-known and up-and-coming comedians. Jerry Seinfeld and Dave Chappelle are just a couple of the regular A-list celebrities you can spot there.
The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre (known as UCB Theatre) is another great comedy club. It offers a range of stand-up, improv and sketches. Kate McKinnon (SNL), Ben Schwartz (Parks & Recreation), Ellie Kemper (The Office, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Ed Helms (The Office), Aziz Ansari (Parks & Recreation) and Amy Poehler (Parks & Recreation) are some of the most famous comedians who began at UCB Theatre.
Amy Poehler was actually one of the co-founders of the theatre. Aside from offering great quality comedy, it also serves as a training ground for performers and comedians. You can visit this website for the latest schedules and locations.
