Moxie’s brief review of content creator subscription services and memberships

At the start of last year, I canceled all my big subscription services (Netflix, Hulu, etc) in favor of using that money to support more independent creators and smaller streaming services. After a year, here are my thoughts.

🤔 Smosh membership

I’m waiting to see if they offer additional perks for Bit City besides early access and Behind the Scenes members only videos. For now, I’m keeping my membership to feed my parasocial Ianthony needs. If they are NOT going to offer additional perks, I imagine they’ll end YT memberships at a certain point.

❌ Second Try

I had stopped watching a lot of Try Guys content before the Ned drama, but I was impressed by how they handled the controversy and I am rooting for them in general. I don’t think the Second Try app gives enough additional content to justify renewing my subscription, and the additional cast is very hit or miss for me. I can find my faves, Jonnycakes and Miles B. on their own channels so I’ll support them there. Also, there’s only so much of Keith eating mediocre food I can stand to watch.

You have to be a big Rhett & Link fan to enjoy this, or be invested in getting their exclusive merchandise. I’m neither, so didn’t renew.

❌ Watcher

I know they received a lot of backlash but they were my favorite Buzzfeed creator. I never remember to log in and I’ve decided not to renew. Unfortunately I think they’ll shut down within the next couple of years.

Shooting star emoji review: an special episode.

Apple: smooth trail and a superb decision to include a picture frame. The background is a yellow star utopia. This picture could belong to a lavish fairytale house with a good view of life and challenges. Happiness-inducing not too realistic star but I still love this example. Is it going through a cloud or is just the big shine of the curious twinkle star? 9/10

Google: Gets the indigo elegance right. It’s like hyacinth, vivid and mollifier. The meteoroid is sorrounded by sparkly stars and blue-ish wonders. Is the trail a crystal structure and maybe this is artificial? 6/10

Samsung: good-looking starry emoji and the meteoroid has a big white gleam exposing! Its smoothly detailed border makes this look like an app icon. You could edit it to make it an icon! The stars are a little translucent, but they look cool! The trail is fading out leaving a beautifully colored golden treasure. 8/10

Microsoft: artless, dumb-looking star with an absolutely big spotlight. not even a single tear of love and passion was put into this. no good stars, where’s the magic? Is the purple background the only magical thing about this? 2/10

WhatsApp: What a grandiose night and starry sky with a aesthetically pleasing gradient that it makes it look like it’s coming to some unknown city! The colors harmonize flawlessly with a subtlety detailed color palette which makes the viewer think this is an enchanting bliss! The big Apple’s sibling! 10/10

Twitter: it’s literally day period in this emoji. Are you seriously going to scare people with your shameful morality? Insufficient effort and love. This star has got some serious thoughts, it makes me think “I can’t know what thoughts it has because I can’t ask to it” it is also a star I guess. 1/10

Facebook: Coin-like star and we can distinguish the smoothly detailed lines on the trail! Comparable to saturn’s rings. The shine illuminates the starry night leaving a nice memory. 9/10

Skype: A genious idea to make the star sharpen and the trail having some nice detail that matches the simplicity of this emoji. Sadly, we miss the sky. The sky is an important part of this emoji in my opinion. Looks lonely, you can travel peacefully. 3/10

Twitter emoji stickers: This is comparable to the greatness of the Magellanic cloud nebulas. This shooting star is one of the cutest things I have ever seen in my life. The detail is superb. It deserves to pass through the big-old mountains. The stars are so soft and white, the light pollution forbids this emoji to show more stars though, what a shame. The border with the exquisite detail with an amazing choice of colors. 10/10 add more stars and it 1000/10.

Joypixels: joyfull colorful stars with the main star having a lovely shape! Sadly, the travel is not the thing I wanted exactly as it looks solid. The subtle gradient of the sky gives this an effective look. 6.5/10

TossFace: sorry, I can’t say anything good about this except the fact that it looks just kind of cute. That does not mean this bare-bones disgrace is going to get a high rating. 1/10

I wasn't really paying attention to games on Kickstarter when this game originally launched. When I saw the campaign for the reprint, I wasn't sure I needed a game bigger than Frosthaven, but I watched a number of reviews, and they all tended to agree that this is one of the best narratives ever experienced in a game. There's a lot in the game that got my attention, but that sealed the deal.

I recently had the chance to try out one of Unistellar’s smart telescopes, the eQuinox 2. Unparalleled in its ease of use, I was literally viewing distant nebula, galaxies, and star clusters within 15 minutes of opening the box. I also had the opportunity to try out Unistellar’s new Smart Solar Filter, which I’ll discuss more below. But first, more about the telescope itself: eQuinox 2 telescope. Credit: Unistellar. The eQuinox 2 is incredibly easy to set up and use, thanks to Unistellar’s phone or tablet app where you control the telescope. If you’ve ever struggled with aligning a telescope, you can breathe a sigh of relief with the eQuinox 2. The automatic alignment, calibration and orientation are a snap, and the instructions for focusing the telescope are quick and easy. This telescope is a 4.5-inch (114mm) reflector telescope, and is mounted on a motorized altazimuth mount that autonomously aligns with and tracks the night sky, based on the location of your connected phone or tablet. Unistellar’s ‘stellar’ app But where the Unistellar app really shines is the smart go-to feature. You can choose from a catalog of over 5,000 celestial objects based on your location. This is especially handy for novice observers who might not know what might be available to see in the night sky. You should update the app frequently so that new objects like comets or supernova are part of the database. To connect the eQuinox 2 to your phone or tablet, you need to connect to the telescope’s wifi. This is easy to do, but I did have occasional problems with it disconnecting if I tried to use another app or the camera on my phone while also observing. Other times, the app would quit responding after long observing times. But this was easily remedied by “killing” the app and restarting it – which for iOS means dragging the app to the top of the screen and then restarting it. One aspect of the eQuinox 2 that took me awhile to come to grips with is that it has no eyepiece. That means you’re not looking directly at the original photons from objects in the cosmos. Instead, you look at the app to see what the telescope is viewing. While it might seem odd at first, the fact that you can share the screen easily in a group setting is excellent for star gazing parties, or for observing with children — they can easily see the screen, and get excited about what they are seeing! Additionally, on cold evenings, I set up the telescope out on my deck and then went back inside and operated it. I could “go to” all sorts of celestial objects and see my observations from the comfy warmth of my favorite chair. Otherwise, I might have skipped observing on those colder nights. Also — and this is probably the most fun and enjoyable aspect of the eQuinox 2 — you can quickly and easily share your astrophotography. The ease of taking photos of the objects you’re viewing is unequivocally the highlight of this telescope. And you can take some really stunning astrophotos. The eQuinox 2’s ability to see distant objects is especially impressive, as you can do long exposures with the click of a button. It uses a Sony IMX347 image sensor which can take long exposures of deep-sky objects. You can read more technical details about the eQuinox 2 in our previous review by David Dickinson. The telescope’s onboard computer stacks images in real time, and gradually you’ll see an ever-clearer image, with greater detail and contrast appear on your screen. It’s exciting and fun to see distant objects slowly come into a crisp view. When you take an image, it creates both framed and auto-captioned images (date, time and exposure) as well as non-framed images that are automatically saved to your photo app. This makes it easy to share your images with family and friends via text or on social media. One aspect I was a little disappointed in was the telescope’s ability to see “closer” objects, like the Moon and planets in our Solar System. For example, the first time I observed the Moon, the go-to feature didn’t work well. It never actually got the Moon into the field of view, but it got close. I was able to manually move it with the controller in the app, and get the Moon in the field of view. The picture, seen above, was fairly good, but not as good as I was expecting or hoping. I should note that I live in a remote area, so not sure if the location feature is hampered by not being near civilization!   But, and a big but here… this aspect of observing was much improved after I received the new solar filter, which included an upgrade to the telescope’s computer and the app as well. These filters are made for use exclusively with Unistellar’s telescopes, allowing observations of sunspots in real-time and the ability to photograph the Sun. The filter snaps easily on the telescope, but I can tell you, for someone who had never used a solar filter before, it took a fair amount of faith to point the telescope directly at the Sun for the first time! The Smart Solar Filter is designed to transmit only 1/100,000th of the Sun’s light, so you can view the Sun without endangering your eyes or your telescope. Again, the Unistellar app makes Sun observation easy, with a dedicated solar mode to automatically point the smart telescope in the direction of the brightest thing in the daytime sky, and track its motion. And again, taking a photo of the Sun is easy-peasy – just click a button –, although the ability for long exposure or stacking images is not available. But thanks to automated image processing, I could observe and take pictures of the Sun and sunspots. While the images of the sunspots were a bit ‘soft,’ I was impressed with how the telescope provided views of the Sun’s granulation — the bubble-like features due to convection currents in the solar interior— which are visible across the entire surface. The Sun is currently in one of its most active periods, so this filter provides excellent opportunities for observation. I’m especially looking forward to seeing how it will perform with the total solar eclipse coming up on April 8, 2024, visible across a wide swath of the United States. With smart telescopes like the eQuinox 2 and its solar filter, it makes solar observing and imaging available to even a novice, but it’s also fun for an ‘old-school’ observer, too, to use the latest technology for ease, enjoyment and fast results.   The Smart Solar Filter sells for $249. My first impressions of the Xreal VR glasses

I received my Xreal VR glasses yesterday; they were delivered five days early. I'm currently using them as I type this. I'm utilizing the Nebula app, which provides me with three screens to work with, which is quite nice. Typing is still a bit awkward since I'm a hunt-and-peck typist who needs to see the keyboard to type. A touch typist, however, would find these glasses incredibly efficient.

One thing that none of the reviews mention is that the closeness of the glasses' screen can cause eye fatigue. It might just be that I need to get used to having the screens so close to my eyes—the actual physical glasses screens, I mean. The virtual screens are adjustable, so you can position them near or far, which is helpful. 

Side Note: Maybe the weird feeling I have after a session wearing the VR glasses is a result of the Jedi MF your brain undergoes in VR. I mean, essentially, the mind is tricked into believing it’s seeing huge 201 inch screen, when in fact, it’s seeing two tiny 1.5 in screens made to look like your viewing 201 inch screen. Your eyes have to readjust to reality.

The great thing about these glasses is that they create a mixed reality scenario. I'm able to use my physical keyboard in conjunction with upto three virtual monitors. However, a minor issue is that it's easy to lose track of your mouse, and the only solution I've found so far is to disconnect and reconnect the glasses.

Another positive is that the glasses don't need to be charged because they draw power from the connected device's battery. You can uses the VR glasses with any device - your phone, tablet, laptop, or gaming console.

The best features of the Xreal VR glasses are that they are lightweight and resemble regular sunglasses.

These glasses excel at creating a home cinema experience with a screen size of up to 330 inches, making them ideal for watching movies or YouTube videos. Although I'm not a huge gamer, I do play Baldur's Gate 3 on my MacBook Pro. It's a significant upgrade to play on a big screen and to be able to look straight ahead instead of down.

However, my primary use for these glasses is when I'm working away from home. Having a three-screen virtual desktop is immensely beneficial to me. I'm also excited about using them to watch movies during train journeys and flights.
