            Neil Finn is a New Zealand music artist who is best known for being in bands Split Enz and Crowded House. He joined Split Enz in 1977 and wrote hit songs such as I Got You, One Step Ahead and Message to My Girl. Split Enz broke up in 1984 and Finn co-founded Crowded House with Split Enz drummer, Paul Hester. Crowded House found fame with their hit song ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’ (1987). In 2018 Finn toured with Fleetwood Mac and he also went on to release solo music.

            Finn was in Te Awamutu, New Zealand, his mother a Catholic moved to New Zealand from Ireland. His family had a love of music which influenced Finn growing up. He also had a love of sports, swimming, tennis and biking. Finn and his brother Tim would often perform together and he performed at family gatherings as well as to the public in their local town. Finn is married and has two children.

CLEANING OLD RECORD PHOTOS OUT OF MY PHONE BINGE: Leave it to the ever-enterprising genius Todd Rundgren to team up with a bunch of other musical geniuses for an album that I still have yet to listen to but immediately bought when I found it. How could I skip it, because look at the guest list: Neil Finn! Thomas Dolby! Sparks! Rivers Cuomo from Weezer! Rick Nielsen from Cheap Trick! Guitar maestros Adrian Belew and Steve Vai! Questlove and the Roots! The lack of photos on the cover says to me this is likely an “I was bored during the pandemic and recorded this remotely, trading Pro Tools files back and forth,” so that tamps down the enthusiasm a bit (few pandemic albums have been all killer, no filler), but at the least, it’ll be an interesting listen.

MY SONG OF THE WEEK “Changing of the Guard” https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/changing-of-the-guard The song title alludes to a famous episode of The Twilight Zone, but it's more a story about the implicit astronaut on this album (extending from David Bowie's Major Tom). The lyrics spread over 3 days, when he kisses his wife and goes off to get suited up for space travel. By day 3 he realizes he's walking in the hallowed steps of those who've gone before him--the old guard. He's the new guard now, but one day he'll also pass the torch. Angels remind him of his wife's love at the end. If you're familiar with closing scenes in Tolkien's LORD OF THE RINGS you'll recognized the "Grey Havens" in the bridge. Musically I was influenced by David Bowie, Neil Finn/Crowded House, and The Beatles, particularly “the White Album” (and there’s lots of Mellotron and “burning piano” on this as well). This is track #2 on my new album, WE’RE GETTING CLOSER TO THE SUN, and I was joined by drummer Mark Jones (track mixed by Chris von Sneidern at Tape Vault Studio in San Francisco). https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/changing-of-the-guard
