I'm nearing the end of Persona 3 Reload, reaching January and getting to the top of Tartarus. After fusing Messiah, I was going through the compendium and seeing what I was missing as I work to complete it- only to find that, somehow, I never got a Nekomata?!? I thought it was impossible to not end up with that! Elizabeth was like "uh, this is pretty beneath you" when I finally made it...

Though I wanted to reference the Nekomata's Japanese origins, as I have previously made a Jorogumo oiran with a more traditional art direction I opted to go for a modern/traditional fusion.

Though her hair was a bit crispy at the ends, I opted to save it with a rough bob and to stripe her face to make it look like fur to save me having to paint the whole body and risk chipping.

funny skeleton monk was easy. biggest threat is the ohkos but because this was pre 4a ohko spells they’re mostly useless.

i got an oni for a potential future endeavor but i really really need to go and get some magic demons. too many of the level scaled ones at this point in the game that aren’t evos are either physical focused or don’t learn any magic skills unless i do the mutation lottery (which i haven’t been getting lucky at no matter how many times i do the reload trick). nekomata is a prime example, having a high magic stat but learning no moves naturally that take advantage of it. really makes nocturne’s fuse or die play style all the more obvious.

have to start prioritizing putting skill points into magic to make up for it, also try and do the roulette again. there’s pyro jacks i can recruit but imma have to get to nihilo asap to get anything else.

i did decide to recruit whatever i find even if it means parting with them right afterwards just to get them registered in the compendium. the grind’s gonna get real soon. oof.

Shadows are so weird in Persona 5. 

You kill one but come across the same one later and it still remembers you after you execute it for fusion and doesn’t seem to hold a grudge for all the times you killed it or extorted it for money/items in negotiations. So, do they have a hive mind or are they individuals? 

They apparently come from the sea of human souls but get brainwashed (?) I guess when coming into contact with serious distortion. And when you successfully make on your mask they say they came from the sea of human souls. Does this make them ghosts in a sense? They talk about their friends and family during negotiations. So thy must have some kind of lives and can be considered alive in a sense despite how much you kill them while grinding in mementos. 

personas/shadows take forms that are commonly known or though about in the public conscious. Taking the forms of spirits (pixie), historical figures, characters (Narcissus), or gods that are well known if not believed in (Thor). Basically if someone on the street is aware on some level of that thing, it’s probably a shadow type. Though interpretations may vary on their appearance and persona-(hah) lity. it still begs the question of why some personas look completely different from  what most people would think of them for example Dionysus: why does he look like a mosais? most people would assume he would have normal (Greek/ Mediterranean) skin color not this mosaic thing. 

 or Cerberus: Original myths MAY have depicted him as one headed but everyone only thinks of him as three headed so why doesn’t his appearance reflect that? 

So many questions and most aren’t important

We know regular peoples shadows become normal personas such as Jack frost or Nekomata from mementos requests but maybe with some alteration of weaknesses. Personas found behave the same as personas awakened to so they must have the similar component of being essentially a shadow. So, if someone dies do they become their persona and float around the metaverse before being reincarnated? Does that make the metaverse kind of the afterlife? Are wildcards technically mediums/ ghost whisperers?

Given this information if I would have been the persona 5 protag I think I would have theorized that Morgana was a human who got reincarnated into the wrong body. The shadows come from the sea of HUMAN souls not any old animal souls. 

But this is still circling back to the question of , if the shadows you fight and recruit are technically people, or at least their souls, why do shadows of the same type all act as a hive mind instead of individuals? 

My theory is that the shadows/personas are souls but they lose their memories of the real world the longer they spend in the metaverse. This memory loss is caused by distortions and a shared hive mind of information with other people of the same exact personality as you. 

There are no real foods or places similar to the real world other than in palaces which act kind of like fly traps of familiarity and intrigue. Shadows when they talk about stuff from the real world, only know about that stuff as a result of shared information with like minded individuals. And their opinions that may have had more nuance and individuality in life are scrubbed into the same thing as those who are similar to them at a base level. And technically killing shadows IS murder but since it’s the metaverse, it doesn’t stick and therefore doesn’t count since you’re killing ghosts which aren’t really alive and might just regenerate.

I’ve never played persona 3 or 4 so if anyone has any other ideas, evidence, headcanons or thoughts I would love to hear them

What is this AU?

It is a universe where there is a crossover between different fandoms and different universes, the curious detail here is that… each character is a magical or mystical creature! They even live exposed to the magic of this world.

In this AU there are different creatures and kingdoms in all the confines of this alternate universe. There are different types of magic that make up the variety of powers and spells that its inhabitants can possess, although in its uses it can be used for attacks, defense, healing, invocation and among others.

But although it sounds like a magical fantasy world and with a lot of wonder to show, don't trust it, there are also dangers and dark forces and creatures that can be a threat if you have no idea how to guide yourself or be very careful where you walk.

What magical or mythical creatures exist?

In this world there is a great variety of creatures or races that fill this Au with life, among them there are:

-Harpies -Sirens -Faeries -Ajins (or geniuses) -Nymphs -Goblins

-Elves -Fauns -Ghost -Demons -Angels -Dragons

-Beastmen (insects, marine, flying, reptiles, transmutable creatures etc)

What magic, spells or powers are there?

There are a variety of powers and types of magic that each creature possesses, such powers usually have categories or classifications or are already specific to each race. These would be:

-Psychics

-supernatural

-summoning magic

-healing

-alchemy

-creation magic

-taming or taming of beasts

-delusions

-music or harmony

-white magic (light, energy, purification)

-black magic (darkness, corruption)

-gray magic (an intermediate point between white and black but its dangerousness or safety will depend on its use and the morality of the person who uses it)

-red magic (just as dangerous as black magic but it is a mystery, its counterpart is blue magic)

-blue magic (just as safe as white magic but it is a mystery, its counterpart is red magic)

-purple/violet/purple magic (just like gray magic is intermediate between blue and red...its dangerousness or safety will depend on its use and the morality of the user).

What places exist within this Au?

So far there is only this information that speaks a little about this world except not the locations, towns, kingdoms and others, since it is barely in development so a map for it will still be thinking as the concept ends.

How do they get their powers?

The way to obtain this magic depends on the genetic inheritance of both parents to the son/daughter, either inherited from one of them or a fusion/variant of both powers

However, there is also the one that they can learn other types of magic and spells in addition to the one they are born with, giving them the possibility of acquiring more abilities and greater possibilities.

But also, it is common for some races or depending on the individual to be born without any power.

What categories or classes of occupations exist in this world?

In this world there are different occupations or categories that the character can decide to be if it refers to combat and adventure, among them there are:

-Warrior -goalkeeper -magician -medicine man -cleric

-alchemist -explorer -Puppeteer -fighter

How do you get to this world?

The way to get there is complicated, since many other AUs do not know how to travel to this universe so far. The way it would be achieved would be to find hidden portals or that appear randomly anywhere in some universe (in all or some), mostly some opened by someone else or by a being of greater power.

In case it is discovered, there would be the possibility of creating an artifact or portal that needs some energy source to keep it active or thanks to the use of an object that you can find but rarely.

I'm going to interpret this as an opportunity to talk about two different characters in one ask so HERE WE GO!

If I really wanted to commit to the bit with Auge, he'd have been part of a set of four. Auge is (loosely) based on the Yu-Gi-Oh Card Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon (just like most of my online handles): his name translates to Eye Pendulum Dragon, he's got the heterochromia, his primary magecraft being fireballs relating to Odd-Eyes attack being referred to as "Spiral Flame Strike" (and no, actually, the "Spiral" part of that is not why Auge has Kamina glasses its just a happy coincidence).

Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon was part of a set of Dragons referred to as either "The Dimension Dragons" or "The Four Heavenly Dragons" alongside Dark Rebellion XYZ Dragon, Clear Wing Synchro Dragon, and Starving Venom Fusion Dragon

Sakuhime Nitta is the primary POV character and one of the three main characters of my personal setting The Dead and The Divine (formerly known as Demigods vs Vampires). In spite of this, Sakuhime is neither dead nor divine, and was in fact a normal teenage girl who's only friend was a bedridden Victorian ingenue but in modern day Japan (named Akemi Unmei). She had an intense obsession with the occult that evolved into a general interest into folklore and mythology and as such can talk your ear off about Jove (not Zeus, specifically Jupiter/Jove and how he differs from his Greek counterpart) for about 5 hours.

This daily life of being lonely and studying literally everything but what she was told to study in class would come crashing to a halt when she was ambushed by vampires after they used the leader of a Group Project she was working on to lure her into a trap, wherein she discovered that she was a wizard/sorcerer/mage (I change the term I use for the setting like every other day) and could do magic.

The magic did absolutely nothing to help her because she was a n00b and very few things can stand up to a Vampire in The Dead and The Divine and a newbie magic-user is not one of them. Luckily, she was saved by the kid who sits next to her in class - a lad named Tsukitaro (he is a gamer) - turned up to save her, revealing himself to be the Demigod son of Tsukiyomi. Now deeply involved in the supernatural, Sakuhime has to fight like hell to learn magic as fast as she can and get as good as possible as the situation escalates very quickly from there, with the most powerful vampire in the world eventually taking a personal interest in the young mage/wizard/sorcerer.

Sakuhime's primary magic is conjuration/summoning, with her first familiar being based on a Nekomata.

🦋 Project Chrysalis, the Colorful Butterfly 🦋

Influenced by the song "Butterfly" by smile.dk and the remix by Kors k feat. Starbitz in Dancerush stardom, this Yumi got a butterfly-themed upgrade with some extra abilities like illusion and summoning butterflies for distraction. The species she's based on is a peacock swallowtail (Papilio blumei)

She's still keeping her seriousness in fighting, but she is easily flustered when someone pets her antenna hair. (Yep, the antennae is actually her hair). The bracelet is an transformation item. Project Chrysalis is a part of Mythic / Mystical Upgrades AU that will be into 4 parts, each part focusing on Ulrich, Yumi, Odd and Aelita.

🦊 Japanese Fantasy, the Extroverted Fox Maiden 🦊

Before you ask, this is the official rebranding of the iroha uta AU bc I really suck at romance. The old color scheme has too much orange, so I made her to be more like a miko (shrine maiden) and Aelita's helper. So, no geisha makeup, she still does wear her red eyeshadow/eyeliner tho!

Fox Yumi has fire controlling abilities, in the form of fireballs! sadly she can't turn into an actual fox. She can also change her eye color into red whenever she has any strong emotions (mostly being agitated)

This new Lyoko outfit is only worn in the new Japanese sector, named Yamato sector!

👹 Oni Yumi, the Spunky Demon and Guardian 👹

I already posted her fixed design in my previous codejuly entry.

She's part of an unnamed AU, but here are some quirks of her. She is loosely based of one of my fav Hololive Vtubers, Nakiri Ayame. Her katana blade is her secondary weapon, and when she draws her blade, she also can manipulate fire with her katana. Aside from it, she can also create flowers... with toxic pollen. Her fans can also spread the pollen in a greater range.

The red flower underneath her eye and on her left shoulder are curse marks btw. Oni!Yumi always emphasize that those aren't tattoos, those are legit, actual curse marks. Her anger is one of her main flaws. She can change her eye color to hazel when she's really enraged, but as for now, I haven't drawn her "hazel eyes" mode. Personality wise, she's spunky, but can be ruthless and unapologetic when she finally snapped.

🌸 Upgraded AU, the Elegant yet Cool Onna-Musha 🌸

P.S. Onna musha is another term of onna bugeisha, which means "woman martial artist". It is also sort of a wordplay, bc in season 1-3 Yumi's Lyoko form is a traditional geisha.

Tbh she has a lot of changes. Her initial upgraded design was more Chinese-looking, not Japanese (bc my dumbass brain thought that using halloweencostumes.com was a good idea for costume design), so I changed it entirely to be a mix of original design and garage kids fused together. Oh, she also wears black fingerless gloves, a breastplate, a Japanese-styled shoulder guard/pad, and bandages on her left arm. No full body design, but i might change her boots a bit.

I prefer using this route for Yumi in my post-S3 AU, and I already hate S4 for making Yumi's Lyoko form look more like a bunnygirl, so... welp. This AU Yumi doesn't have changes personality-wise to the normal Yumi, but probably... I'll change bits of it gradually. Her secondary weapon will be a naginata!

🐱 Neko Yumi, The Cutest Virtualization Bug Ever 🐱

Basically it's season 1-3 Yumi with cat ears and tail because of a "DNA fusion" with her adopted pet cat. I might make a nekomata variety of this, but let's see.

This literally is just a random idea bc I love kemonomimi. The ears, bell and tail color is based of my Twitter friend's pet cat, they named it Yumi too 🐱 (Bc their twitter account is privated, here's the cat)

😈 Onryo Empress, the Seductive yet Destructive Demon-Ghost 😈

People been saying she looks like Nezuko or any other Kimetsu no Yaiba character, but this design is more influenced by the geisha in identity V.

According to Epsilon, Onryo Empress Yumi is not awkward at all and is a superb seductress. Which, while great for Ulrich, is not great for everyone else. One look at the Onryo Empress and you understand that this is a true queen of darkness.

💀 X.A.N.A.-Yumi, Simple But Intimidating 💀

X.A.N.A.-Yumi is personally my most favorite design of all these AU Yumis I ever created. She is basically a fusion between oiran, geisha and kunoichi. Sorry for the messy motifs of her kimono whatsoever, those are supposed to be lilies.

Years of struggling through college and Celia feels like her life is going nowhere. Things take a supernatural turn, however, when a ghostly blue cat named Ao forms a bond with her. When Ao possesses her body, Celia becomes a Nekomata Fusion, the only being capable of fighting the oncoming invasion from the spirit world. Her life is changing, whether she wants it or not. The girl who thought of herself as useless will discover just how much the world needs her.

Hoopoooly frick they made this block creepier (arqa? Iirc this is arqa?). I'm thrilled. They made it more fucked up! Yes, it's arqa. Junpei thinks the faces on the wall look like him. Where before it looked kinda like a creepy temple with some stylized bones and random faces, it now looks very organic with purple neon and looooong ribcages and still faces, but no right angles and just, it's so fucky! So Eldritch!

Hama and mudo seem to have been replaced by kouha and eiha. Good change! Chance of instadeath was always horrifying.

P5R Personal Persona Top 20

Told you I’d do this. I love the Persona designs in this game and that’s outside of the fact of me being a massive mythology, literature, and occult nerd. All of these are gonna be based on their aesthetic design, their place in the compendium, and their skillset and viability. I’m also basing viability primarily on the abilities it picks up through leveling, not through items or fusions. There may be standouts, but there are very, very few exceptions. For clarification, I also limit myself to using only personas whose base level is lower or matches my own until roughly late game on NG+, hence the placements.

Alice-We love her. She’s hella fun and has that horror, unassuming Annabelle doll type vibe (plus Alice in Wonderland—noice). She comes very close to scraping the ceiling, but I give her a pass because not only does she have a glaring weakness in the form of bless damage, but her physical stats and endurance aren’t great compared to the rest of the options that start above base level 80, which is also bad because she is a very late game option. Why I love her though is because she has an amazing Magic stat and she has a unique instakill button for farming through lower tier encounters that can chunk HP and SP on more difficult no item runs where I’m trying to conserve resources.

Nekomata-Catgirl. Fairly obvious, but still my early game go to, because she’s very adaptable. Also, my play style sits in the support/swing area that Morgana occupies if you carry him (which I don’t), so she makes for a good replacement so I don’t have to use him. Plus she represents a Yōkai and Japanese myth has always been a pretty niche interest of mine.

Yoshitsune-I know. I’ve always been very clearly anti-meta and this dude just happened to hit number 3. Hypocrisy. I know. But hear me out. Japanese history and legend is cool as hell. Plus, there is something SO satisfying to stack him with Charge, Zaou-Gongen’s trait, and all kinds of buffs to just devour health bars. I mean 750 per hit on Maruki is truly disgusting and he hits for 8 of those. I won’t use him regularly, but still a personal favorite.

Ananta-A very niche pick, I’m sure, but a very solid mid-to-late-game all-around carry with the abilities it picks up. Plus Nuke is a pretty solid choice. Being that Ananta is a cosmic serpent in Hinduism and has pretty interesting lore plus a kick ass design? He’s very cool.

Angel-My early game carry. Bless, early game is fairly uncontested and she comes with support moves as well. I also am a victim of religious trauma from Christianity, so using Abrahamic rooted characters is cathartic in its own way. Plus, I mean, girls.

Nebiros-Late game pick that’s just very fun. She specializes in Brainwash and turning your enemies against each other. Plus she picks up some pretty neat abilities. Probably could be higher, but bosses resist status effects. Another Abrahamic deep lore entity. High general and necromancer of Lucifer’s armies.

Quetzalcoatl-We love Wing Snake here. My Nekomata replacement late game. Windy boy here pulls his weight DEEP into late game and boasts some pretty butch stats for where he sits.

Yaksini-Early to mid game Kali. Solid for physical abilities and has the bonus of inciting rage. A Hindu goddess of fertility is also kind of like a mood for carrying two swords.

Okinunushi-Discount Yoshitsune, but can definitely still hold her own. She gets me Myriad Slashes earlier than I really should get it. And the whole samurai/ronin vibe is so nice in this game.

Lilim-My ice chick. I usually use Yusuke anyways, but Yusuke is a very good physical damage option and I don’t always want to waste his turn using ice moves, so Lilim helps cover that.

Baphomet-The late game weakness hound (or goat). Covers a wide scale of magic and abilities plus a few solid strengths. Also, I’m a fiend for the occult vibe and Baphomet serves that in spades.

Asterius-There will be a few DLC personas on here, but trust me, I know how broken they are. Asterius, besides been the Greek manifestation of the Minotaur, has a very unique utility where his damage goes up as your health goes down, incentivizing you to take damage, which I think is super cool. That and his design is S tier.

Mara-I will never use him for several reasons, mainly because I have dignity, but his design is truly peak. Two words: Dick Chariot.

Hastur-Probably the latest in the game I ever go because when you hit Maruki, you’re already pretty squared away, but Abyssal Eye is too cool of an attack to miss out on. Plus he adds a bunch of solid resistances and options to your play style. And while I’m not at all a fan of Lovecraft in any way, shape, or form, the Cosmic Horror genre has so much cool stuff.

The Riders (Four Horsemen)-I’m pretty sure I have at least two of these each run through. They build differently, but each one gets a solid mix of status and attacks and they make for good pick ups.

Kaguya-The chief reason I think DLC’s are broken as hell. Izanagi-no-Okami is bad, but you get this bitch at level 20. This, by itself, can bail you out of so many jams it’s insane, which is why I don’t use her. As a level 20, she also gets Repel Phys AND Mediarama AND Shining Arrows. All early in the game. Nasty, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t add her because she’s saved my butt so many times.

Pisaca-My Despair troll and a very fun midgame option that can status effect your enemies to victory. Plus, horroresque vibe on this one is top tier.

Power-Yes, there is a Persona. Named. Power. She isn’t in my inventory for long, but she practically carries when she is. Her defense is great plus she comes with some solid hybrid damage/status moves.

Daisoujou-Truly, the protector. Great for support, but matches most heavy-hitters with damage. Basically, Alice but midgame and bless instead of curse and he comes with more healing instead of assault moves.

Arsène/Raoul-Literally, your first persona and I wish you kept him longer. Raoul is the late game variant and is basically what Arsène would be if you had him the whole time. He also gets a blanket sleep that can set up SO many technical smacks.
