After many years I tried my old Neopiko. I expected that they won't be usable after all this time but: surprise! Except for the blender and a few colors most of them are still usable. 😀

Coloring was never my strenght but maybe I'll experiment with traditional coloring again.

the other day i was in a work meeting and one of the fountain pens on my desk had ink too light to easily read in it (it's great for ink sketches and it is very pretty, in my defense) and the other one was empty and all i could find in my five pencil cups was brush pens and highlighters and neopiko deleters and shit and zero Normal Fucking Pens. but i had to urgently scribble some shit down so i didn't forget to follow up on it!!

and so, the easiest and most convenient option was somehow Dip Pen With Homemade Iron Gall Ink

Drawing Process: Prof. Sikorsky

With the following drawing I wanted to try my old Neopiko markers. It's been a long time since I used these makers for coloring. I was surprised that they are still working after all these years! :D

Step 1: Outlines

First, I used a blue pencil for the rough sketch and then a normal pencil (2B) for the final sketch.

Then I put a sheet of marker paper on top of the sheet with the sketch and laid them on my light box. I used a pencil to carefully draw the final outlines. Normally, I prefer ink for the outlines but my ink doesn't work with markers. I recommend to always test your materials before coloring traditionally so that you don't ruin your drawing.

Finally, I used another pencil (4B) to make some lines a bit stronger / more dynamic and added some shadows.

Step 2: Color Test

I decided that Prof. Sikorsky's hair should have a bright color and his clothes should be mostly white. But I wasn't 100% sure which colors I should use. So I opened the photo above with CLIP Studio and roughly colored the drawing digitally. This way I could compare different color combinations.

Blonde hair suited him well but I also wanted to try a more "futuristic" hair color (B). It looked interesting but I thought that blonde hair looked more friendly. In the end I chose A.

I think it's a good idea to take the time to test the colors like this before you color your final drawing. You can change the colors digitally if you are not satisfied, of course, but you can avoid this additional step by planning your artwork carefully.

Step 3: Coloring

Then I colored the drawing with my Neopiko markers. I started with the brightest colors. I often used one bright and one slightly darker/more saturated marker for each color to make the gradation as smooth as possible.

I was a bit nervous because I didn't use them for a long time. That's why I took my time and colored it very carefully. Sometimes it's better to not overdo it. I focused on the shadows and colored just what is really necessary. It often doesn't need much coloring to look good.

Because I typically use the Deleter Neopiko Markers more than I do Copics (a small price difference and I use both with excellent results), I decided to make a mini tutorial on how I build up color to achieve Isabel's lovely tan skin tone.

The first image looks really white washed, but that's only because I realized during a different drawing I was coloring that I needed a lighter color to help enrich the darker color that I was using to capture the skin tone I am trying to achieve. The only marker I currently have that is close enough to the color I want to work with is actually a Blick Studio alcohol based marker. But like watercolors, you have to build up on that color and layer it up to achieve the look you want. I also used the Copic Colorless Blender to help smooth out and blend the final product.
