hey merry! i noticed you just started the show, so how're you liking dark winds so far?

I started and finished it in less than a week. suffice to say, I really enjoyed it! here's some quickfire thoughts (note: I'm Aboriginal/First Nations "Australian" so I'm speaking as a non-Native to the so called US) <3

Something I loved about it as an Indigenous person is that every character has a different relationship to their ceremony and cultural beliefs. You have Bern who's totally immersed, Joe who wants to but struggles because of his grief, and Jim who's skeptical af. I liked that so much because it's very real. at least in my family and community. Everyone's degree of belief is different for different reasons!!

Bern and Jim oh my FUCKING God. I was GIGGLING and KICKING MY FEET. a+ culturally specific slowburn. when he asked her about her tribe?? when she gave him the protection medicine? when he says there's nothing on the rez for him and she says "I'm here"? WHEN SHE LEAVES AND HE RETURNS THE PROTECTIVE JEWELLERY??? 🥹🥰🥹🥰

I preferred the first season to the second. I think it was shot better and had a better executed mystery. The cinematography in season one was so gorgeous. It had a very distinctive almost sunny yet gothic feel, but the second season was shot more conventionally. I hated the colour splash sequences.

Emma's sub-plot of helping other women avoid forced sterilisation was so awesome. Deserves its own show to be honest. That sequence where she tells the patient in Dineʼ (under the guise of translating for the white doc) that she should not have her baby in hospital because the white doctors will sterilise her? One of the best character intros I've ever seen, and I love how it tails off in season 2 with her agreeing to go public with what's happening.

I love Bern so MUCH. Jess Mattern is so GOOD. her encounters with the witch are CHILLING. Her pure dedication to her cultural beliefs is so inspiring. She's also one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen and I'm so gay. My only thing is......in WHAT universe is becoming a BORDER PATROL officer gonna mean you encounter LESS injustice. smh!!!

Kiowa Gordon as a 1970s suave FBI deserter turned hire out of a highway hotel private eye full of love for his community?? That's my dream gender!!!!!!! Also......it must be said....i need him.

Finally, even though I could tell Graham Roland and the writers made HUGE efforts to shift the white gaze of the novels Dark Winds was based on, there was just some moments/attitudes in the series that felt Off. maybe I'm over sensitive to copaganda idk but yeah there was just a little too much.......rampant individual American heroism and pro-cop/military stuff at times that made me roll my eyes as a non-usAmerican viewer

anyways, looking forward to having a reason to stay alive until 2025 (when season 3 comes out!)

Some Nico Facts (Canon)

this is going to be long i’m sorry

His birthday is January 28th, making him an Aquarius (This is the only one where I can’t find an “official” source, but literally everywhere online is in agreement that his birthday is 1/28, so take that as you will).

According to his shirt in The Hidden Oracle, he listens to The Ramones

Also the subject of shirts: introduced in the Trials of Apollo, Nico has his own Camp Half-Blood T-shirt but in black, with a skeletal pegasus on front and Cabin 13

His signature aviator’s jacket-- it’s gone. After the fight with Lycaon in The Blood of Olympus Nico had to discard of the jacket because it was shredded. In the following book, The Hidden Oracle, Apollo’s narration places him in a black leather bomber jacket.

According to Apollo, Nico’s hair smells nice? (”His hair smelled like rain against stone... a pleasant scent” (The Tower of Nero, p. 261).

Nico’s smile is described by Apollo as “a bit of winter sun breaking between snow flurries” (The Tower of Nero, p. 102).

He’s able to travel through dreams and leave messages for people that way. Although it’s not fully explained in the books, I can only assume it’s due to the nature of mythology and abstracts/metaphors/whatever: Death and Sleep are very close— basically only separated by a beating heart really— given that Thanatos and Hypnos are twins.

Coach Hedge is his favorite/preferred satyr ( “I’d settle for Coach Hedge.” Nico pushed Will’s arm off. “Besides, don’t talk about Grover too loudly. Juniper’s right over there” (The Hidden Oracle, p. 157).

Despite being 10 years old, untrained, and completely unarmed at the time, he told off a full-grown manticore for being rude to Bianca (The Titan’s Curse, p. 18).

Although he burnt up most, if not all, of his physical Mythomagic cards, he still plays the game online

“Hades: Every time I try to speak to this boy, he has his face buried in his phone, “text messaging” that glowy boyfriend of his. Aside from his sisters, Jason and Reyna were the first people that he was able to find a friend in and trust wholeheartedly as allies. Not even Percy achieved that honor until the very end of the series

“She gave Nico a big hug and the crowd roared with approval. For once, Nico didn’t feel like pulling away. He buried his face in Reyna’s shoulder and blinked the tears out of his eyes” (The Blood of Olympus, p. 477).

“’That’s-- that’s fantastic! Dude!’ Jason opened his arms for a hug, then froze. ‘Right. No touching. Sorry.’/Nico grunted. ‘I suppose we can make an exception.’/Jason squeezed him so hard Nico thought his ribs would crack” (The Blood of Olympus, p. 485). Jason also told Leo off when he compared Clytius the shadow giant to Nico (“‘Any kind of light just gets sucked into his cloud of darkness.’/‘Sounds like Nico,’ Leo said. ‘You think they’re related?’/Jason scowled. ‘Hey, man, cut Nico some slack’” (The House of Hades, p.322).

Nico traveled through Tartarus alone and survived. And he’s willing to go back a second time to rescue Bob/Iaptus the Titan.

He’s a friendly and caring individual despite his appearance and initial attitude toward others (which is decidedly a defensive tactic since other campers and even Percy, by his own admittance, were generally creeped out by him).

Assured Reyna that she didn’t kill her father and was a good person, didn’t want her to feel worthless

Indirectly responsible for helping Percy and Annabeth make it through Tartarus. If he hadn’t been the one to visit Bob and tell him how kind Percy was, would Bob have leapt into literal Super Hell and assisted them?

In the Trials of Apollo series, Apollo/Lester is one of the first people who looked at Nico and decided that, hey, he’s a little weird but he’s alright. Up until this point readers have only ever been told, or alluded to, the fact that everyone else saw Nico as something to be afraid of (keep in mind he’s like 14/15 years old).

Just as integral in saving the world in the Heroes of Olympus series as the Seven were. Same deal as in Percy Jackson and the Olympians-- he was able to convince Hades to bring his forces to the aid of the gods, which was able to turn the tide in the gods favor

He’s fully capable of being a normal teenager; he’s not some eternally brooding figure that hates everything. He has interests and a sense of humor. He doesn’t dislike fun, and he doesn’t completely dislike the company of others, either. It’s just that with all the trauma of being a child of Hades and prophecies and war… it wasn’t really the time or place. It’s hard to thrive and be yourself in an environment that constantly beats you down and makes you feel less than worthless, even more so when you don’t have a friend to fall back on. He didn’t feel comfortable anywhere, especially not during his time on the Argo 2. And remember, we didn’t get his PoV until The Blood of Olympus-- up until that point he was really just a side character. Whenever another character (aside from, like, Hazel) spoke about him from their PoV it was always in a bad light: how he was frightening, how they were scared to go anywhere alone with him, etc., etc.) Take away the pressure of two back-to-back wars and his discomfort with his sexuality (or even, gods forbid, finally give the guy is own chapter perspective) and he’s actually a certified goofball just like the rest of the demigods.

Examples:

“‘Getting some redecorating ideas?’ Nico asked. ‘Maybe you could do your dining room in medieval monk skulls’” (The Blood of Olympus, p. 146).

“‘No need for threats,’ Nico said. ‘Frank’s a good guy. Or bear. Or bulldog. Or--’“ (The Blood of Olympus, p. 479).

“‘I hope I’ll see you again?’/’Oh, you will,’ Nico promised. ‘I’m going to be the flower boy at your wedding, right?’” (The Blood of Olympus, p. 480).

That part in Camp Half-Blood Confidential where he did a warbly rendition of Apollo’s song from the terrible orientation film. To the tune of “The Hokey Pokey.” Hand-claps included. With a small audience present.

That whole FAQs section on page 140 of Camp Half-Blood Confidential with Annabeth, Percy, and Nico. Trust me.

He found Hazel in Asphodel because he went to find Bianca and bring her back while Death was missing (Son of Neptune).

He cares for Hazel deeply. During his talk with Hades in The Blood of Olympus, his first concern was that she was the one of the Seven that was destined to die. At the end of the book he kisses her cheek (other times too) and tucks her into bed after she falls asleep (“‘Yeah, go.’ Nico kissed her cheek, which Piper found surprising. He hardly ever made gestures of affection, even to his sister. He seemed to hate physical contact” (The House of Hades, p. 318).

Arguably one of the strongest demigods of their/our(???) time. He shadow traveled himself, two other people, and a huge statue across the world in about a week’s time. He turned Bryce Lawrence into a ghost and banished him to the Underworld in like five seconds. He turned a guy into a skeleton and then turned right around and was able to control it. Same with that cow thing in The Tower of Nero

Hades is proud of Nico (“Send in a real hero, like the di Angelo kid” from the back cover of The Tower of Nero. Also, he literally says it in The Blood of Olympus on page 149). He wants him to be happy.

He knew about both camps and traveled between them for nearly a year without telling either side.

This kid knows stuff. Obscure stuff. Annabeth isn’t around? Don’t worry, Nico probably knows. Those shaggy cow things in Venice? Katoblepones. From Mythomagic, ofc. “Troglodytes don’t exist, they’re a made up myth!” Nico says otherwise. He knows them personally. They’re having brunch on Tuesday. Next question. The location of the Doors of Death? Covered. Take a left at your nearest hell void (or maybe don’t).

what other mcr "the sun is evil" lyrics do you have? the only thing other one that i can think of is a lyric from gun.: "as soon as i get my gun / i'll point it out the window at the setting sun". but i didnt think "evil sun" was a running theme lol. but it would make sense bc of the vampire stuff!

okay so it's not a complete list, as i do add to it when i remember certain lyrics or see old blog posts/interviews.

under a read more because i typed a lot.

so i have a sort of mental collection of all of the lyrics that mcr has that state that the sun (and by extension, light) is evil. i also have a separate list/essay that includes fire, and how it (and the sun) represent religion, and how religion is weaponized. it also includes vampires, and their religious undertones, but that is a LOT to type on a tuesday evening, so we'll stick with the sun and light for now, with a bit of vampires added on, since you mentioned them.

(edit: i did, in fact, type a lot on a tuesday evening and did not necessarily stick to sun and light.)

first we have like, the entirety of vampires will never hurt you. more specifically, we have "and if the sun comes up / will it tear the skin right off our bones?" which, obviously, does fit the theme of vampires, and the mythology surrounding them and their aversion to sunlight. there isn't much else on bullets touching this particular subject, apart from skylines and turnstiles' "steel corpses stretch out towards an ending sun / scorched and black, it reaches in and tears your flesh apart/ as ice cold hands rip into your heart." however, this one doesn't necessarily refer to the sun as evil, just places the sun in a desolate setting.

moving onto revenge, we have a few. hang 'em high starts out with "wait until it fades to black, ride into the sunset." while this most likely refers to the typical western movie ending, this lyric is one i wanted to add in, as it does tell the listener to avoid sunlight.

in fashion statement, we have the lyric "bright lights that won't kill me now or tell me how." as i mentioned in the intro of this post, light is also a part of this narrative. the phrase "bright lights" does come up again, in the black parade, with famous last words' repetition of the lyric "these bright lights have always blinded me." the lyrics "so many bright lights to cast a shadow / but can i speak?" are also in famous last words.

back to revenge, in i never told you what i do for a living, we start off with the lyric "stay out of the light or the photograph that i gave you." once again, we, the listeners, are being told to stay out the light/sun.

that's it for revenge, except bury me in black has a line i'd like to include: "we'll douse ourselves / in high explosive light." this briefly touches upon the weaponization i mentioned earlier.

for the black parade, i already spoke famous last words above. so i'll start with the sharpest lives, which has the lyrics, "a light to burn all the empires / so bright, the sun is ashamed to rise and be / in love with all of these vampires." this is a great set of lyrics, as it not only includes three of my keywords here (light, bright, and sun) it also includes vampires! and fire/burning, as well, which is a part of light, and, once again, this being used as a weapon. this lyric actually is present in several of my lyric collections because of this.

now, let's move onto danger days. in destroya, we have a lyric that more explicitly states this evil sun theory. "against the sun, we're the enemy!" not much needed to be said there.

a big part of danger days and the killjoys lore is that the sun will kill you. in goodnite, dr. death, he states "you know that big ball of radiation we call the sun? / well, it'll burst you into flames / if you stay in one place too long." there are some lyrics in danger days that contradict this statement: sometimes, the sun is your enemy, sometimes, the sun is your salvation. however, i'm not creating an antithesis right now. you just either have to believe me or look up some danger days lyrics yourself.

okay, now it's time for conventional weapons. we'll start with tomorrow's money. "you fell in love with a vampire [...] / say hello to the good times / and burning up in the sun." vampires, burning in the sun, what more could you want? it's pretty straightforward, and is a perfect example of "sun is bad because vampires."

your example of gun. fits right in here: "well, as soon as i get my gun / i'll point it out the window at the setting sun." no further comment on this one, as you've connected the dots yourself. but yeah, sun bad, shoot gun at it.

in make room!!!! we have "me and you and all of this living dead / burning up in the sun where the bodies add." another example of the sun and the way it burns those that are in it.

burn bright, while not exactly fitting with this exact theme, is an honorable mention because it refers to taking back the fire, the light, and using it for yourself. not allowing it to burn you, but for you to use it to burn something else. i’d include it in my other collections, instead, but i wanted to talk about it here.

finally, rounding off this post, we have the foundations of decay. "will you welcome your extinction in the morning rays?" has haunted every corner of my brain since its release, and connecting this particular lyric with the first one listed, the lyric from vampires, is actually what kickstarted this entire collection! the way these two lyrics fit together and paint a clear image in my head... i lowkey became obsessed. like, there's something about this that just made me get out the corkboard and red string. buzzfeed unsolved i've connected the dots dot jpeg.

i'll continue connecting these dots for as long as i can, and might even add onto this post eventually. like, for example, the post with my tags that you're responding to:

Nico di Angelo moments I don’t think we talk about enough

- during the son of Neptune, Hazel stood up for Percy and vouched for him to join the legion; Nico then beams at her, “Good job, sis! That took guts.”

- Nico’s active gay panic during like the entire first half of Son of Neptune where he keeps actively deflecting Percy’s questions and stressing about it to Hazel

- also during SoN (clearly an underrated book for Nico) there’s this one moment where there’s all these ghosts in the room and they’re all arguing and he LITERALLY just puts a finger to his mouth and they all go silent like

- Mark of Athena, at the very end when Nico was rescued he looks Percy in the eye and tells him, “Percy, they pulled me into the pit. The things I saw…” and his voice broke, and I think that the rawness in that moment despite the really messed up relationship they had but Nico was so traumatized that he still displayed his full emotion towards Percy

- house of Hades Nico constantly just being a punching bag.. I mean he literally got thrown around so much in that damn book for no reason 😭😭

-at the end of HoH also, during the final battle, Nico cheers at some point and screams, “let’s turn this tide!” And I just think. That’s very special

-BoO Nico had tons of great moments but let’s just keep reminding ourselves of the “we had one home, now we have two,” moment

- something something the hidden oracle during the final battle with that massive giant thing and the fact that if you step back and look at it, you kinda realize that Nico was the strongest pillar the camp had at that point and that it was when he was taken out of commission that the battle turned dire

- tower of Nero, also during the final battle 😭Apollo wasn’t able to reach Nero, so he screamed, “Nico!” AND nico LITERALLY jumps 10 feet in the air and brings his sword down like some kind of shonen protagonist and tries to CLEAVE NERO IN HALF 😭 only to get tossed away like a puppy

- tsats Nico was kinda ooc but one thing that did feel so in character and funny was that he was revealed to be so smart and perceptive about romance to the point he was literally predicting Will’s confession to him

I got a pair of brown leather chelsea boots last year that I love. I hate shoe shopping bc I never know what I want until I see it. But these ones called to me right away.

18. Favorite lesbian movie?

Carol, The Children's Hour, Desert Hearts. The other night I rewatched But I'm A Cheerleader for the first time in ages and now I need it in my DVD collection.

45. At what age did you know you were a lesbian?

I started getting suspicious of myself when I was in grade 7, so about 13. The next year I saw Jayma Mays sing Touch-a Touch Me on Glee and I was like "Ooooh, I see what's going on here". But I didn't officially label myself as a lesbian until I was 17 or 18.

49. Talk about your dreams/aspirations for the future

I wanna get back into theatre and start acting again. I want to move to the city so I can peruse that and be closer to my sisters. I get anxious when I think too far down the road though. Right now the main goal is finishing college. I did just apply for a job that could get me back into the theatre world, at least for a few months. But I'm not gonna make a big deal about it just yet.
