The Undefeated Teams
It's Wednesday morning, February 5, 2025.....and we have three undefeated teams within all of men's basketball at the small college levels: Daemen, Washburn and Wesleyan. Let me tell you a little bit about each of these teams....
Daemen is coached by Mike McDonald, who has a really unique story. He's the only coach that I know that has won 100+ games as a Head Coach at the NCAA DI level (Canisius), Division II level (Daemen) and Division III level (Medaille).....and never had to move from his same house! Daemen is currently 19-0 and is winning by an average of 23.7 ppg. They are shooting 52% fg, while holding opponents to 36.1% fg. The are out-rebounding opponents by 9.7 rpg, and they share the ball really well, averaging 19.8 apg. Their next game is on Friday at STAC.
Washburn is coached by Brett Ballard, who comes from the Bill Self coaching tree. Washburn is 21-0, while playing in the tough MIAA. The same five starters have started all 21 games, and the Ichabods are deep, with eight players averaging double digits in minutes played per game. None of their top seven scorers has missed a game this season. Washburn is winning by an average of 22.4 ppg, while holding opponents to 64.4 ppg. The Ichabods are shooting 51.4% fg, while holding opponents to 40.2% fg. Their next game is at home against Central Missouri on Saturday.
Wesleyan is coached by Joe Reilly, who is in his 17th season as the Head Coach of the Cardinal program. This will be the 10th consecutive winning season for Wesleyan. The Cardinals are now 21-0, playing in the tough NESCAC league. They have just gone through an incredibly tough portion of the schedule, going unscathed in this stretch of games against Williams, Middlebury, Hamilton, Amherst, Trinity and Tufts. Wesleyan is winning by 19.1 ppg, while out-rebounding opponents by 10.6 per game, and averaging 17 assists per game. The Cardinals next game is this Saturday at Bates.

You seem sweet a bit newer but open to learning stuff. Probably not super involved with fanculture except like a couple small things. Goes/went to a nescac or college sport player. Studies math or CS, unless you did robotics then you probably got into engineering.
The first sentence led me in expecting pointers and I got a palm reading instead. What.
And yeah, I’m only in like four fandoms, am intensely dedicated to them, and do not want more.
Definitely not a sports person, lmao.
All of the above regarding studies.

All around the campus you can feel the leaves, sprouts, and blooms aching to get out into the warm sunshine. The same can be said for the human members of our community as well. It doesn’t look like this here yet, but by the end of the weekend our trees and grounds will look a lot more like this video from 2018. We love our campus all year round and we always eagerly welcome the return of long days and warm afternoons. Explore Middlebury: https://middlebury.pub/ExploreWhatInspiresYou

Oscar 2
I entered our common room and found an unconscious Oscar on the couch. Alex was at his desk and explained, “I found him passed out drunk under the sink in the bathroom so I woke him up and brought him back.”
“Should we get him up in his bed?” I asked
“I don’t think we can get him all the way up there.”
Oscar sleeps on the top bunk above me and Alex has a normal bed to the side in our 3-bed bedroom. On that fateful move-in day, I was the second to last of the five of us to arrive, so I took the bottom bunk. That left Oscar with the final and most inconvenient bed, which shaped everything.
“Good point.”
Sometime later, Alex and I went to sleep, and Oscar looked alright on the couch. In my half-conscious state between awake and asleep, I heard the door open and creaking noises above me.
Ah, he’s mobile now.
An indeterminate amount of time passed, and then I got rudely awakened by the sound of someone bashing our wall in with a sledgehammer. That’s what it sounded like, except instead of “wall” and “sledgehammer”, I would later learn that it was actually “floor” and “Oscar’s face.”
Panic mode kicked in for me because nothing good can come out of that loud noise in the dead of the night in a bedroom. I sat up and turned on the lights. Alex and I stared at Oscar’s immobile body lying face down on the floor, a good six feet below his bed.
“Oh, shit.”
We got up to investigate him, and by now, a small pool of blood was gathering under his face.
“Hey Oscar you OK?”
He let out a nearly inaudible moan.
In hindsight this felt like a stupid question, but the fact that his response was what it was really did say a lot about his condition then. No, he was pretty fucking far from OK.
We bent down and helped him to his feet. His face was smeared with blood.
“It’s so hot.”
Oscar stumbled over to the window and began scratching at it. We assumed he was trying to open it and let in some air.
“It’s so hot.”
“Oscar you’re not going to open the window. We need to get you to the bathroom and clean you up,” Alex said, being the level-headed guy he was.
“OK.”
We each grabbed an arm and were slowly guiding him in the direction of the door when somehow, he pulled his penis out and starting urinating. Yeah, right on the bedroom floor, and dangerously close to my bed. Now, I’ve seen quite a few penises in my life, and I’ve seen fewer urinating penises, but this was different. Maybe because it was happening right on the bedroom floor, dangerously close to my bed.
Three thoughts quickly appeared in my head in the following order.
First thought: so that’s what Oscar’s penis looks like.
I mean, it was a pretty standard looking one, but it still surprised me. I guess when you know a guy pretty well and finally see the one part of him that you’ve never seen, it changes your relationship with him quite a bit.
Second thought: I should grab it to prevent it from getting on my bed, which was dangerously close by.
Third thought: But that’s gay though.
In the end, my heterosexual insecurity won out and so the stream cascaded free. Keep in mind that all this time we were pushing Oscar ahead of us to the bathroom, and because we were all facing and walking (and for one of us, urinating) in the same direction, we stepped in Oscar’s urine every step. And so, it was out of the bedroom into the common room, then into the hallway, the down the hallway, then into the bathroom. The path to the bathroom now seemed like the maze from the end of The Shining. It’s weird that as I’m typing this now, that took just one sentence, because at the time, it felt a lot longer.
Finally, we made it to the bathroom.
Alex then asked a sensible question, “Should we walk him all the way to the urinal?
I knew what he was thinking. The urinal was on the other side of the bathroom and it was pretty far. I figured by the time we got to the urinal he would be already be done, considering he has been urinating for the past minute or so. That would just mess up the bathroom floor needlessly, not to mention the fact that ten guys on our floor use that bathroom. The right option was obvious.
“Dude just piss in here,” I said, pointing to the trash can by the door.
Oscar didn’t argue. He probably didn’t want to walk any more than he had to. I’ve never urinated and walked at the same time, but I imagine it must be somewhat uncomfortable, what with the unnatural pressure on your bladder created by your moving legs. Alex grabbed a bunch of paper towels and returned to our room. Amazingly, Oscar went on for about another thirty seconds. I was so mesmerized by how long he kept urinating that I forgot about the whole sledgehammer-to-wall business.
I looked at his face. It was not pretty. Lots of blood was streaming down from various holes on his face and he was making gurgling sounds. He leaned over the sink, opened his mouth, and let out the Niagara Falls.
“Just keep rinsing. Mouths don’t usually bleed for too long.” I told him.
He did, but blood didn’t stop coming out.
“Open your mouth; let me see.”
I tried searching for a noticeable wound, but found something sadder.
“Umm, I can’t see two of your teeth.”
Oscar groaned.
“Uh, keep rinsing your mouth, I’ll go back and find your teeth. Be right back, OK?”
He groaned again.
Back in the room, Alex was explaining to Steve about the situation. Steve, from the other bedroom, must’ve woken up during the commotion.
“Hey guys we need to find Oscar’s teeth.”
We got on all fours on the now piss/blood/tears-covered floor and searched every square inch of the room. We didn’t find any teeth, but did realize that it had been over a week since we last cleaned the room. That was a problem because at the beginning of the year, we agreed to vacuum every weekend. I would later learn that we found no teeth because Oscar’s teeth never left his mouth. He was hit with so much force that the missing teeth actually went deeper into his gums.
We gave up searching and I returned to the bathroom to inform Oscar of the tragedy. He was still bent over at the sink, still spitting out blood, and probably contemplating his life decisions.
“Hey sorry we couldn’t find your teeth.” Words I never thought I’d say.
“It’s OK I’m fine”
He most certainly wasn’t, but probably needed some privacy. Back in our room, Alex was on the phone.
“…pretty hard. He was bleeding a lot. Well, we don’t know who to call so we thought we’d call you guys.”
It was the campus security. While we waited for their arrival, we began cleaning our room. Who knew it was going to be that kind of a night? The security guys arrived a few minutes later and found three tired freshmen in boxers tiptoeing around the few remaining clean spots on the floor. We directed them to the bathroom and Oscar was assured he was in good hands. Before they left, they recorded all our names and ID numbers.
I don’t know about Alex and Steve, but the atmosphere suddenly felt lighter. Yes, the floor was still covered in different body fluids. Yes, Oscar was still missing two teeth. However, he was on his way to the hospital and things didn’t feel as dire. I broke the silence.
“Well, there’s no way I’m going back to bed now.”
Alex and Steve agreed.
“I’m also kind of hungry,” I continued, “want to go down to 7-11 and get a snack or something?”
