Stay Bright in the Darkness: Chapter 1

Tikka felt grief roll through her as she pulled herself beneath the water before the heat of the explosion rippled through the air. She remembered a time when she and her sister were happy. When their parents doted on them with love. She wondered what went wrong. What could have led her beloved sister astray to the darkness? She felt the cool water swallow her. She waited, then she felt a shift in something and there was silence. She grabbed hold of the ledge and drug her body forward and out of the pool. She was no longer in the same room as her sister, now most probably deceased. Ward and Jakoby were gone too. She hoped they were able to get out before they were swallowed by the magic-induced blaze. No need for her to concern herself with that now though, there was nothing she could do. Her ears twitched. Movement down the hall. She walked forward, swaying from lightheadedness, but carried on. "Don't move!" A voice shouted. A familiar figure pointed a gun at Tikka. Eyes widened in recognition. "Tikka! Shit! I thought you were dead. What happened to you? The others at the safe house were all dead when I went back. I thought the Inferni took you and the wand--the wand!! Where is it?!" "Calm yourself. The wand is safe and I believe in the hands of the FBI by now. I need to sit down. Water. Can you get me water? I'll tell you everything, I just need to sit down." The woman turned and went into the room behind her, confusion and worry on her face. Tikka walked into the adjoining room and sat down on one of the few chairs. The walls were barren and the air was stale. The woman walked into the sitting room with a water bottle in one hand and a medical kit in the other. "I'll heal. I just need water and rest. I don't need anything else." "Are you sure? You're bleeding--" "Yes. I'll be fine." Tikka replied. The other woman looked uncertain but moved over to another chair and slowly sat down. "Now do you mind telling me what the fuck happened?" "Like I said, the wand should be with the FBI by now. After my sister sent that assassin to the safe house, I stole the wand. Leilah eventually tracked us down. I believe she is now dead from the blast of a war spell. That's all you need to know, Cecilia." Tikka explained. ------- Kandomere gripped the wheel of his Bentley tighter. He could hear Montehugh's heavy breaths next him and he wrinkled his nose just the slightest bit at the large human. Ward and Jakoby were being transported to an FBI medical ward where they will be treated for there injuries. With the realization that Ward is a Bright, came uncertainty and curiousity. He will be kept under oberservation, the elf decided. ------- Cecilia Marsh laid down on the small cot and thought about the events of the last twenty-four hours. She was pleased that the wand was no longer in the hands of the Inferni and that the threat of Leilah was gone, though she would prefer that the wand had not fallen in the hands of the government. She decided there was nothing else she could do at the present and worrying about it would not help. She let her head fall back on the pillow and pulled the blanket up to her chin and rolled on her side. She closed her eyes and let the world of Morpheus take over. Like Cecilia, Tikka thought back on the days events. She leaned against the back of the metal chair and sighed. She knew the FBI's Magic Division would not stop looking for her. She heard of the elf, Agent Kandomere, from her sister and knew he would continue his search until all of the Inferni were killed or arrested and all his questions answered. Unlike humans, elves did not require hours of sleep each night. She closed her eyes and began her routine mediation, deciding that any plans should be made in the morning once she has a clear head and her human comrade is awake.
