This messaging app likely offers better privacy than Signal, as Signal was originally a CIA creation, and this app is more decentralized, and provides monetary incentivizes to network nodes for helping to uphold privacy and decentralization.

A map of every single band on the Metal Archives as of March 1st of this year, using the same dataset I used for this site. Each individual dot represents a single band, and each line indicates that two bands have a member in common.
A closeup, showing the lines in a bit more detail.
There are around 177k bands on the Metal Archives, and, of them, about two-thirds can be connected to one another by common members.
#metal#metalarchives#data visualization#social networks#heavy metal#fun fact if you make a graph with 177 thousand nodes the graph visualization software will shit itself and die#so if I wanna visualize any sort of analysis I'm probably gonna need to figure out how I can pare this whole mess down#but I think this kinda looks cool

Shocking Lymphedema Symptoms You Didn’t Know About
Understanding the Lesser-Known Symptoms of Lymphedema Lymphedema is a serious condition that many people overlook, and it’s time we shine a light on it. This chronic condition affects millions of people worldwide, yet it is often misunderstood or misdiagnosed. In this blog post, we are going to explore the symptoms of lymphedema that are often ignored. By the end of it, you’ll have a better…

I fully believe that if we go far enough on the whole "radical human augmentation including brain uploads/reconstruction" some very fundamental assumptions are going to have to be challenged. For instance, the notion of "one person"
Like, as it stands, most of society says one living brain and its body, at least electorally.
Because there really isn't a way to fix hive mind edge cases without opening other cans of worms.
Like, if I were designing a brain upload for myself, I would make the body I shove myself into later a standardized-ish design with a special made data transfer procedure so that if two divergent copies of me meet, we can merge memories, and then do my best to remerge frequently to avoid the psychological damage of this scheme. This gives me most of the benefits of the one mind-multiple nodes schema while making my various bodies harder to hijack and avoiding the requirement of get.
So, if there are ten to twenty copies of the same person, with independent minds but periodically merged memories, is that one person? How long without merging before one of the versions is a new person?
#Look#if I'm copying my mind as a form of immortality#I'd want to make both a synchronization procedure and a duplication procedure#which proceeds to allow for a decentralized design where hypothetically one node can back up the whole lot#and loss from one death is minimal#the reason it's not some sort of wireless network is 1. hackers; harder to hack a physical port#2. under no circumstances do I want the death of one of the nodes recorded; having memories of my own death seems unwise#now to avoid some other issues as well; I probably want there to be some sort of marker for memories not from this body#because I can imagine a case where one of me repaired themself; another was planning to make the same repair; and they sync

it is really weird to be sitting here mostly afk in ffxiv while every so often the chat pops off about lag and disconnects, meanwhile my connection hasn't so much as even blipped, when the internet in this house is so flaky that I not infrequently get better performance by tethering to my phone.
#azu plays ffxiv#everyone thinks its more ddosing but like. if it was a ddos why has my connection been rock solid?????#its gotta be a network node somewhere i think

Reading the wikis about renaissance salons and early modern English coffeehouse culture for the billionth times lol, and I think something underexplored (at least insofar as I've bothered to actually look yet lol) is that like they're often renowned as having established and enlightened the public sphere, but were in fact still private institutions. I'm particularly meaning the coffeehouse case--salons were private in the sense of being hosted by an individual inviting people [and the elitist exclusionism/biases this caused have in fact been explored], but by private I more mean that cafes are businesses rather than a truly public-invested space. There are of course many points that have been made about their having gained significant social power rivaling the universities, just wish the actual nature of that rivalling power could generally get a bit more depth beyond just like being "from being more in touch w the common public." Topic also reminds me of a book I was reading a few months ago about the history of bookstores (specifically as opposed to libraries) and their role in shaping intellectual trends/communities/cultures.
I think going further into the foundationally capitalist motive of those historical platforms/facilitators for "public" discourse/connection, and how it may have shaped what went through them, could lend interesting parallel insights or outright ancestral context for the current state of privately-owned online social media.
#for later reference#something something nodes shaping the network#would also prob be relevant to look more into the republic of letters and such#anyway i have a book that im hoping will get into it but only a chapter or two in so will see and probably post more later lol
