1310 - The Kensingtons, Lottways, & Beaumonts
Marci wills a wobbly smile at Cassandra, nodding along, sympathy clear on her sister-in-law’s face. They both know well the feeling of losing a child, even after months have passed. It feels cruel to know the Watcher has taken not one but many children from her and her dear friend.
Marci lets her gaze fall away from Casandra’s for a moment to check on the twins. Her niece, Brynn, is currently (or very likely) teasing Emiliano. By the grin on his cheeks, he doesn’t seem to mind.
For the first time, the Kensingtons have managed to have the Lottways and Beaumonts in the present with one another. Last year round, trouble with traveling had rendered the Lottways unable to make it to the family gathering on time. Marci knows that not technically all the Beaumonts are here—really only one—but with the recent news she’s heard from Dayana, she expects her cousin won’t share the name for too long.

A hour prior…
Kurtis arrives in tow with his wife and daughter, stepping foot on pathing as he maneuvers the girls off the bandwagon. Although not showing as much as she normally did with their past children, Casandra was once more pregnant. They hadn’t told anyone yet in fear things would turn out like last time, yet Kurtis suspected Mrs. Turner knew well already. The journey to the countryside had been rather troublesome this time around, though nothing like the delay of last year. He had visited a few months prior, earlier in the year, whilst in the countryside for an order his Ser had made for a local blacksmith around here, yet the visit was brief. Luckily for Kurtis, however, Ser Ager was a well-adjusted family man and had sympathized with Kurtis’ want to spend time with the only living relative he had. Kind, given how busy the city gets during Fall. He’s certain Ser Ager could use extra hands, especially his squire of which.
Speaking of his relative, Kurtis had immediately noticed a newly renovated part of her and Esteban’s home. The small house the Kensingtons occupied had improved slightly in space. Kurtis supposes it made sense given the four nieces and nephews he now had. A ting of guilt passes through him, and he ignores it in favor of ignorance.
“Auntie Marci!” Kurtis hears Brynn say, snapping him out of his thoughts. He watches the normally stoic little girl run up to hug Marci. He knew Brynn loved it here with her cousins. Huffing, he readjusts his grip on their belongings, following right along with Casandra.

“You’re Kurtis?” Dayana says, sitting down on the twins’ bed. The man beside her (who only vaguely resembled Marci in looks) looks upon Dayana with partial surprise, back straightening.
“Yes. You’re Dayana,” he responds, voice unexpectedly disinterested for a reunion with his cousin. Dayana thinks back. Had she ever met Marci or Kurtis as kids? Perhaps surely during her infanthood.
They sit in long silence before Kurtis cuts in, “I remember my mother speaking many words of her sister—your mother.”
“Oh,” she mumbles, hands fiddling with her dress to keep busy.
He hums, the sound nearly drowned out by the multiple of conversations occurring in the small house.
“Not good things I presume?” Dayana says a beat later, no stranger to the Lottways’ hostility to Gloria. Although maimed for different reasons, she knew her mother was never really a likable person. Not during Dayana’s upbringing at least.
Kurtis’ eyes don’t bother looking back at Dayana when he answers. He seems preoccupied. “No. No good things.”
His eyes cut to hers, just for the moment. His soft words do not dwarf his warning. “Do not do the same as your mother has to our family,” he says, tone even and unchanging.
He looks away then, and Dayana feels a distinct awareness that he is not only stating a warning but a clear indication he seeks no relationship with her. Sitting in silence, it is gutting, she realizes, to see her mother’s actions reflect on herself.
For the rest of the night, she does not try to prompt conversation with Kurtis any longer than she has to.

Sunday Records, 2022.
It’s early June and I’m in the middle of eleven days off from work. I cannot tell you how stunning these last few weeks have been for me. For the first time in a long time I’ve been feeling great about many things. I have been at the top of my game. Relaxed, tranquil, and level like never before. I went to Sacred Bones’ 15th Anniversary and experienced a feeling like no other. I’ve met a few friends from the alternative-music circle whom I haven’t seen in years. I’ve been tasked to do an amazing amount of summer radio shows at WUSB. The Roman goth girl who’ve I’ve been in contact with since February taught me to face my fears, to not be afraid of bad news, and see the greatest, truest value in people. It’s not even halfway to June and I feel something great is yet to happen.
I’ve been spending money on music without worry. It’s a winner-take-all tour of Long Island’s record stores and at this point I’ve hit up three so far with astonishing results. Sunday Records would be my fourth on the list to visit and it had to be. It’s my only Sunday off in the foreseeable future and, still true to its name, only opens on that one day. I didn’t have a choice, did I? It took me only 30 minutes to get there and closing time was 5PM. It’s 2PM as I walked through those doors so I had three hours to Autobahn it through the entire store. No shelf or rack was left unsifted by me.
The layout of Sunday Records hasn’t changed one bit. Nothing’s re-arranged. Upper wall racks of 7” singles and 45’s hovered above the 12” vinyl bins. There was a maze of LP’s front to back, side to side, and in the middle. What also hasn’t changed was the owner’s system of classifying records unique to the store. If not a genre, it’s chart position, week, and radio station. Brian (the owner) was obsessive to detail and nostalgic like that. Then again, so am I.
There’s a section on the front left side of the entrance. It’s where the electronic, dusty classics, and un-priced arrivals sections were. Less than .01% of its stock was electronic and I sure wasn’t going to waste time sifting through Fifties and Sixties jazz greats. I just knew. I turn to my right and there were plenty of funk, groove, and R&B LP’s and 12” singled there. I looked under the bins and there were boxes of records not priced out. That’s where I found various hip-hop and rap singles, uncharacteristic for a store that specialized in vintage jazz, Seventies radio rock, and everything Eighties. It was all fair game and I took what I could. Unstickered singles by Black Moon, Big Daddy Kane, Kurtis Blow, Jeru The Damaja, Fu-Schnickens, Double XX Posse, and an early pre-fame DMX e.p. (“Born Loser”). I knew Brian wasn’t the type who was into West Coast jams or boombox anthems and made me think why he took them in the first place. No matter. It was a lucky out for someone like me to easily stock up on hip-hop and rap vinyl.
Now the 45’s. Sunday Records was always good with pricing them on the cheap. What I purchased in 7” singles from West Babylon’s Looney Tunes, I tripled that here. These 7” singles of Eighties hits from my Atari / Nintendo childhood meant not having to purchase full albums for one or two songs. Why not acquire them? Plenty of synth-pop, new wave, and pop rock. One 7” I might have passed up the last time around was Re-Flex’ “The Politics Of Dancing”. The single that gave me these Sunday vibes was finally in my hands. This visit’s surprises? Gary Numan’s “I Die: You Die” b/w “Down In The Park” and Killing Joke’s “Adorations” for $4.00. Then I came across The Normal’s “T.V. OD” b/w “Warm Leatherette” The good news was that I discovered it. The bad news? It was a $14.00 hit…and without an original artwork sleeve. The price you pay to take home synthpop history.
When that was over, I took a deep breathe and dove into all the vinyl inventory. The great thing about Brian was that almost nothing was out of place. He’s incredibly meticulous in that everything was in alphabetical order and with almost nothing in the wrong bin. Also with Looney Tunes, a good amount of records were alphabetized or sorted by artist, allowing me to fly right over large chunks of sections and straight to the others. What wasn’t hip-hop / rap and categorized by chart position, week, and radio station ended up on the lesser expensive side. Like the 45’s, I sped through furiously through the LP bins and acquired a lot of hits from my childhood. A recent discovery now in my hands? Captain Sensible’s “Wot” for $5.00.
And what I made up in value, I would lose later with some essential finds. That’s even avoiding the new vinyl section. Towards the end of searching was where it started to hurt. The least of my worries? The Cars’ Panorama for $8.00. The Shirts’ debut and Anti-Nowhere League’s The Perfect Crime for $9.00 each. But that’s not all. I found essentials in The Young Gods and Pere Ubu where it stopped at the $10.00.
Now the heavy stuff. No one remembers or know who The Innocent was. The Roman goth girl I mentioned earlier? She’s insanely obsessed with Tent Reznor. While doing a Nine Inch Nails run, I learned he was part of said band right after leaving Option 30. The Innocent’s only album was found in one of the bins and I grabbed it for $14.00. Had I not known about them, I would’ve zipped past it without even knowing. One album I passed up during my last record-store tour was Cabaret Voltaire’s The Crackdown. I found it twice in unopened condition for $20.00 at several stores and gave it up at least twice, thinking I could l buy it for less. Well, four years later I was right on that one. I finally found it again and for $14.00 opened I wasn’t going to pass it up a second time. While there, Sunday Records still maintained a good selection of other industrial and related releases. They had more Cabaret Voltaire records including The Pressure Company (!) and even the new ones (Shadow Of Fear and Dekadrone) which I was impressed that Brian carried. Front 242 e.p.’s were also in the bins and several Ministry records starting with Work For Love (the overseas pressing of With Sympathy), some Twitch-era singles, and all the way up to Psalm 69.
Here comes another unexpected hit in the kneecaps: Kraftwerk’s The Man-Machine for $20.00. Any time I buy Kraftwerk on vinyl I pay that price; nothing less. That’s how much I paid for a used copy of Radio-Aktivitat at a record fair held in Amityville’s veteran hall. Again, take no chances. Finally, a record that I hoped to find in the wild because it was so good: The Raveonettes’ Pe’ahi; $20.00 asking price. Decisions had to be made but not necessarily now. I held on to it for the time being, having to decide to take it now or pass it up and find it again somewhere else for less. Looks like I will take my chances.
It’s not an understatement when I say this, but 99.99% of Sunday’s stock was all vinyl. The other .01% were used cassettes and CDs placed right near its listening station at the front-right of the entrance. I passed it all up as nothing there interested me. So far, Sunday- is the only store where it was all vinyl.
Ten minutes to closing. It’s about time to make some decisions. Brian greeted me and started counting everything up. Of the 75 I had in my arms, I gave five back to him including the Raveonettes album. He was amazed. He tried selling it back to me because he also knew it was a great album. Oh, I agreed. But as I told each and every one of you, I held off just in case. His laptop lost its’ juice so there was no easy way for him to add it all up and keep track of what he sold me. He ended up taking photos of everything I bought and took him about a good fifteen minutes to calculate it all. Then I gave in. I’d take the Raveonettes’ album after all. Take no chances, right?
“You should come here more often!” he told me in an exasperated manner. “Really?” I laughed. It’s not every year that I do this, Brian. I’d try real hard to keep up if I did. Now I knew why he said that.
“That’ll come to $348.00”. Yikes. That was at least triple of what I spent at my last visit here. I was sweating like Rodney Dangerfield on his worst night. (Plot twist: he never had one.) Despite Brian giving me all the hip-hop records for $20.00, the other records made up for it. No coupons, either. But, I had all the confidence in the suburbs to spend with no worry. The stack was so hefty that Brian got me a box from the back to hold all the 12” records in and bagged all of my 45’s so that they wouldn’t slip out of position. I was relieved in the end to nail that Sunday like I wanted to. But the day wasn’t over yet.
After I thanked Brian for everything, I loaded my purchase in the trunk. I had plans on seeing Candy, a Jewish ginger whom I haven’t seen since we left Brentwood. She has a family-owned restaurant out in Calverton and I promised I’d visit the next time I was nearby. I went west on Route 25 and started the peaceful, sunny journey to her eatery. It’s not every day I’m out in Riverhead or Calverton. I took all the time in the world driving through the scenic route of vast farmland and sparse local businesses along the long, quiet roads; ready to catch up with her and walk down a beautiful but bittersweet and tattered memory lane.

Welcome to the Cliffside Inn; Kurtis Intro
Okay I can already tell that the poll is going to end with people wanting the beach babes so here is an intro for the resort itself as well as an intro for the most outgoing mer so far~
(Can’t decide if he should be octopus, jellyfish, or seahorse though 🤔)(Edit: jellyfish!)

A magnificent coastal resort, that had indeed started as a small inn, was renovated and expanded in the 1920’s and became a hit with stars and starlets of the age. Over the years, the new money crowds lost interest, but old money families still vacation there enough that the place can maintain its vintage decor and unique ambiance.
On a whim, you’d entered a contest for a free trip there. Never in a million years did you think you’d win— but you did. Now here you were, feeling like a fish out of water amongst the rich folk in the lobby, carrying your own threadbare luggage while valets and attendants trailed behind them, carrying luggage more expensive than a new car.
Seeing your distress, a young man waded from behind the front desk and through the crowd to you.
“Hey, you~! You must be one of our lucky new guests?”
You nodded tentatively, taking in his fuschia hair and the bellhop outfit he was wearing. You hadn’t seen any of the other workers with brightly colored hair and pierced ears, and he certainly seemed more relaxed then they were. Then again, the dyed hair could be a good sign that he’s just chill. Maybe there is no dress code policy here…?
He hummed happily. “It’s a pleasure to meet you! I’m the son of the owner of this fine establishment. Might I help you with your bags?”
Of course. Those earrings did look expensive. You smiled politely, “No, thank you. I’ll be fine as soon as I get my room key.”
He pursed his lips, grabbing one of your bags and slinging it over his shoulder before you could protest. “Awww, come on, let me be a gentleman? It’ll make me look bad, letting a cute thing like you struggle up the stairs with all these.”
“What about the elevators?”
“Broken,” he sighed, looking mournfully across the lobby towards the elevators.
You watched as the door opened and people got off the elevator, then more people got in. You looked back at him, and he just shrugged, grinning. You were regretting entering that contest more and more.
He helped you up the stairs, and led you to your room, opening the curtains to show off the view and taking a minute to dramatically fluff your pillows for you. The man walked over to the door, and bowed with a wink, before leaving.
You were about to breathe a sigh of relief, but the door didn’t click shut— he poked his head in one more time. “Oh, I don’t think I got your name.”
You furrowed your brow but told him. How had he known your room number but not your name? “What’s yours?”
His thick eyebrows, also fuschia, shot up towards his hairline. “My apologies, valued guest! My name is—”
“Kurtis!” A tinny voice came through his earpiece loud enough that you could hear it across the room.
Kurtis winced. “Yes, Mom?”
More tinny noise, but not loud enough for you to make out more of the words. “Yes, I’ll be right there.”
He looked back up at you, eyes apologetic and smile tight. “Sorry about that. Duty calls! Please do give us a ring if you need anything, though~!”
And with that, he was gone. Now you could breathe more easily. What an overwhelming guy…
You sat back on the bed, feeling the expensive sheets under you. You almost felt bad even touching something so expensive… almost.
The air was surprisingly cold and dry for a building so close to a warm beach, especially a building as old as this one. Although you supposed they did have enough money to install a new AC system every year if they really wanted to. The decor was mostly in white and pastels, with shell-shaped sconces on the walls and even a small chandelier hanging from the ceiling.
You shivered, stress from the drive here and your arrival bleeding into an overwhelming exhaustion. You pulled the throw blanket from the end of the bed over yourself, and fell asleep.

"Wow, hell of a guy—" Chapter 4: Bitch Season 5 Episode 4: Snitch *Trigger Warning*
Isabella walked towards the scene running her hands through her blonde hair her body was sore from sleeping on the hard floor last night she was too intoxicated to climb back into her bed so she fell asleep on the living room floor instead of the couch. Her head was pounding like crazy Isabella didn't have time to take an Advil this morning since she had been called in this morning.
"Park let's go, we are knocking on doors," Jay said walking up towards her and noticing how her hair wasn't its usual ponytail or straight it was messy and frizzy. She didn't look put together still wearing the same clothes from yesterday eyebags under her eyes.
"Okay, let's go," Isabella said following him as she rubbed the side of her head with both hands
"I didn't see anything or hear anything," He said staring at them with no emotion as he leaned back against his chair with a blue coffee cup in his hand.
"You live across the street, 20 feet from his house," Isabella said pointing from his house to the suspect's house with her notepad.
"I was watching TV, had the volume up. Anything else?" He said drinking his coffee from the blue cup.
"You knew Eddie, right? Yeah? Was he a good guy?" Jay said leaning his side against the stair railing.
"Great guy"
"Yeah?" Jay said turning to look at his partner, "Why not help us find the man who killed him?"
"Not my job"
"Oh, you're okay with him getting killed?" Jay said getting impatient with him.
"Didn't say I was okay with it. I just said it's not my job. There's a difference"
"Not really," Jay said before walking down the steps.
Isabella followed behind him as he let out a frustrated sigh.
"Relax Halstead," Isabella said following him down to the next house.
"Shut it, Park," he said turning away from her and walking to the next house. ༘⋆🌷🫧💭₊˚ෆ
Isabella walked up the stairs with a file in hand walking towards Kim's desk where everyone had gathered. They stared at her screen Isabella couldn't see much she tried to peek but couldn't Jay noticed and he stepped to the side to allow her to walk in front of him.
"so this spotter-cam video. It's not perfect, but here is the shot. Swivels. There's our guy" Kim said.
Adam leaned down closer to look at a computer screen, "yeah. Sure looks like Kurtis"
"Mm, about the same height, same weight" Kevin added.
"Yeah, but we can't see his face," Hank said.
"Not enough for a warrant"
"It's enough for you to grab Antonio and pay him a visit," Hank said looking over at Kim.
Kim got up from her seat and grabbed her sweater.
Adam took her spot and looked at the footage again, "So what happened– Kurtis shoots Eddie, and he goes running out the back? Yeah, but the bloody footprints that I saw–they go out the front door"
"There could be two shooters. One goes out the back the other one goes out the back" Isabella chimed in.
"Hey, you two— head over to that restaurant and figure out what happened will you?" Hank said looking at me and Al.
Isabella nodded her head and followed Alvin out as she brushed by Jay. She had made Jay drive her home so she could take a quick shower and change into new clothes. Hank had even noticed that she arrived at the scene wearing the same clothes he had told Jay to take her him if she asked to change which is why Isabella was confused he had agreed. ༘⋆🌷🫧💭₊˚ෆ
Isabella walked up the steps of the bar with Al right behind her she opened the door to the bar and made her way towards the bar counter showing her badge.
"How can I help you?" The owner said as he cleaned the counter.
"We wanna talk to you about one of your regular customers, Kurtis Washington," Isabella said leaning against the bar.
"Chicken, extra spicy, French fires, Arnold Palmer" he sarcastically said, "More lemonade than tea"
"We're more interested in his business dealings than his food choices" She responded with a smile on her face.
"You got a men's room?" Alvain cut in as he looked at the bar.
He pointed the way toward the men's room and Alvin walked away leaving her alone with the bar owner.
"What about Andre Walker?"
"Ham and cheese sandwich, extra Swiss"
"Back to food, huh?" Isabella said fake chucking.
"That's my business. Food"
"Mmm," she hummed out.
He leaned against the bar to level down to her height, "Might I say. You must be the prettiest damn police I've ever seen"
"Might be?" Isabella said with a small frown.
"Okay, you are" he laughed.
"That's better. So, Kurtis and Andre came in yesterday with Eddie Greene and another guy. White guy" she said chuckling.
"Don't know Eddie or the white guy"
"Anything unusual happens?"
"Didn't even notice they were here," he said shrugging his shoulders.
"You're good," Isabella said pointing at him with a smile.
"That's why I'm still standing, baby"
"Thank you," Alvin said standing behind Isabella after he had returned from the bathroom.
"Thank you, your insights and observations were invaluable," Isabella replied.
They exit the bar and walk back towards Al's car. ༘⋆🌷🫧💭₊˚ෆ
Isabella and Alvin walked towards Hank's Office where he stood next to his desk waiting for them the team watched as Isabella was typing fast on her phone they could hear how hard her fingers tapped on the screen but stopped once she entered Hank's office.
"Found a counter-surveillance device in the restaurant," Alvin said with a plastic bag in hand that held the device, "The kind you can buy for five bucks at some half asses spy store"
Isabella leaned against the door, "Must've read the transmission from Ruzek's wire, so Kurtis cut the meeting short" She said.
"They probably thought Eddie was snitching—working a case, so he popped him. Two in the chest" Hank said looking at us both.
"Hey," Jay said walking into the office, "Techs lifted two fresh prints—one off a beer bottle in Eddie's living room and the other off the front door knob. Both are a match to Roland Garrett. Male, black, 36. One felony charge. Aggravated assault with a firearm" Jay said reading off his notepad.
"Track him down now" Hank ordered as he closed the office door. ༘⋆🌷🫧💭₊˚ෆ
The team arrived at the scene Isabella got out of Jay's black truck they followed Antonio and Kim into the shop. Antonio walked in first with Jay behind him with their guns out. Kim and Jay checked each aisle as Isabella and Antonio talked with the cashier of the shop.
"Roland Garett?" Antonio said pointing his gun at him
"Yea?" he asked with his hands up in the air.
"Chicago PD"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa," he said staring at the head of the gun in fear.
"Keep your hands up," Antonio said.
"Man, what's going on?" He asked looking at us.
"We need to talk. Step down to me" Jay said with his gun pointed at him and using his other hand to put him up against the counter.
"About what?"
"Eddie Greene. Turn around"
"Someone killed him last night," Isabella said walking towards them.
"I know," he said.
"Oh, you know he's dead?" Isabella questioned putting her gun away.
"Yeah. He's my brother" he said with tears in his eyes as Jay searched him.
Her eyes widened and she turned to look at Antonio who was looking at him in shock. ༘⋆🌷🫧💭₊˚ෆ
Isabella typed away on her computer looking for more information on the case but she could feel eyes on her she looked up from the computer and saw Jay staring at her even as they made eye contact he didn't look away.
"Can I help you?" Isabella questioned as she bit her lip staring at the screen, "oh-"
"What?" He asked getting up from his seat and walking over to Isabella's desk.
"I found some video surveillance from the night of the murder is not perfect, but it shows a distant image of the man we believe to be Kurtis Washington, hopping into a BMW two blocks from Eddie's house," Isabella said looking away from the computer screen to face him.
"Let me get the rest of the team," he said before walking from my desk.
"You make out the plate?" Hank asked as he walked over to Isabella's desk.
"Already ran it, while Jay went to get you. It's registered to Maya Spriggs, girlfriend of Andre Walker, mother of his three children" Isabella said reading the criminal record off the screen
"Okay, so Andre was the gate away, driver, that makes sense. They're partners" Adam said.
"All right, get that car. Maybe we can find some blood" Hank said. ༘⋆🌷🫧💭₊˚ෆ
Isabella followed Adam towards the small house of Maya he quickly rushed up the four steps before knocking on the door holding the warrant in his hand. Once the door opened Adam slammed the warrant onto the gate door.
"There's a warrant for the car," Adam said.
"Wait, wait, wait, wait. Baby that's my car" Maya said standing behind Andre.
"I got this, baby," he said, looking at Maya as they fought.
"Wait, why does he need to?" She asked glaring at her boyfriend and then looking at Adam and Isabella.
"Oh, so she doesn't know that her car was used as a getaway vehicle for a murder?" Isabella said sending him a smirk.
"Murder? Baby what are these police officers talking about?!" She screamed at him eyes full of anger.
"Nothing, go back to the kids," he shouts, turning to look at the duo.
She glared at him before walking away from the door.
"Sup Billy, long time no see," he said staring Adam up and down, "what you doing over here, huh?" opening the gate door. "Thought you lived in the west loop. Word is, there's a huge, untapped market for blow up there?"
Adam let out a sign, "Just so you know, Eddie— he had no idea I was a cop. No idea" he said shaking his head
"You know, I liked Eddie. Kurtis did too. We feel really bad you got his ass popped" he said brushing up between us as he walked down the steps.
He stopped at the second to last step and turned to face him as he walked.
"You better watch yourself, Andre," Adam said pointing at him.
"Sounds like a confession to me," Isabella said her arms against her chest.
Andre turned to look at Isabella, "I ain't killed nobody. And I don't know anybody who killed anybody. But word gets out around here. And snitches like Eddie get dealt with real fast"
"Well let's go," Isabella said walking down the steps.
Andre walked back up the steps as Adam walked down, "Listen to your girlfriend, Billy"
"We'll see you soon," Adam said glaring at him pushing past Isabella and heading toward her car.
The team got out of the vehicles and headed straight into Maya's beauty salon with their guns out as they screamed and knocked things over not caring that they were being reckless and scaring the women in the salon.
"Chicago PD!" Adam said walking into the Beauty salon.
"Everyone show us your hands now," Kim said following Adam.
"We have a warrant," Isabella said showing her the warrant with a smirk on her face.
"What the hell is going on?"
"Maya, right? Turn around for me" Kevin said holding handcuffs in his hands, "Just wanna see what kind of beauty products you're pushing out of this joint"
Adam started knocking things down onto the ground not caring that everything was breaking and Isabella joined in as well.
After searching through the whole beauty salon and leaving the mess behind, they walked outside where Andre stood outside watching as Kevin and Kim drove away Maya in handcuffs.
"Andre. It's not our fault your lady runs a salon without a license" Adam said walking towards the curb.
"And sells blow in her spare time," Isabella chimes in, standing next to Adam.
"What'd you find, huh? What, a couple of grams? Eightball or something? She doesn't move no product" he yelled.
"The problem is, she's got two priors. With this new charge, she's going away" Adam said walking closer to Andre, "She's a three-time loser" he held up three fingers to his face.
"Mother of your children," Isabella said shaking her head.
"Unless, of course, you got something to tell us. Something that might inspire us to drop the case?" Adam said.
Andre gulped as Adam was all up in his personal space, "Nope. Not a damn thing" he said, "You know, I'm getting sick and tired of her ass anyway. Truth is, you're doing me a favor"
Isabella laughed at him, "Wow, hell of a guy—"
"Shut up, bitch, I wasn't talking to—" he yelled at Isabella but was cut off by Adam pushing him against the wall and punching him in the face.
"You got a smart mouth, you know that!" Adam yelled, "Stand up! Say that again, right now!"
"Adam!" Isabella shouted at him and pushed him away from Andre onto the street.
"I'll take the badge off. You and I could do this right now, man! Come on, Isabella,"
Isabella pushed him up against her white Jeep Grand Cherokee that was parked right next to them, "What the hell is wrong with you?" He yelled at her as he stood up from the car.
She pushed him back again "What the hell is wrong with you!" She screamed at him, "People are watching you! What you did was out of line" Backing away from him, "Get in the car" ༘⋆🌷🫧💭₊˚ෆ
Isabella stood in front of her locker putting on a new shirt since she had spilled some coffee onto her white shirt luckily she had an extra one in her locker along with more clothes shoes, and makeup.
"Hey!" Adam said standing in front of her with a serious look on his face.
"Yeah?" she mumbled fixing her hair.
"So, listen that thing from yesterday—it's become a little bit of a situation"
"Really?" Isabella grumbled looking away from the mirror to look at him.
"Somebody saw what happened, they filed a report. Now I got a CR to deal with" he said, "I just wanna make sure you and I are on the same page"
Isabella nodded her head, "Same page" closing her locker.
"I know you know what I mean"
"Yes, I do. Now if you excuse me I have to do some paperwork" she says waking out of the locker room and bumping into Jay.
"Sorry," they said at the same time.
"Don't worry about it?" Isabella said turning to look back at Adam who looked at stared.
"Everything good?" Jay asked as Isabella turned back to look at him.
"Mmm," she hummed.
"We caught a break. Found some surveillance footage from a camera about a block away from the mini-mart" Jay said. ༘⋆🌷🫧💭₊˚ෆ
Everyone gathered around Kim's desk as they watched the video surveillance camera that they had gathered near the mini-mart along with more footage.
"That's Kurtis no doubt," Jay said standing behind Kim with his arms crossed against his chest.
"That's cause you know it's him," Hank said, "If you're in a jury, that's a skinny man, black, wearing a hoodie"
"All right, let me play with it," Adam said taking a seat in Jay's emptying seat, "see if I can get a better angle"
Adam zoomed into the surveillance footage, "Well there's the gun" Kim said pointing at the gun that was thrown onto the ground.
"All right, play it again, regular size," Hank said.
Adam zoomed out and pressed play, "All right, hold it. Stop. See that? There is someone else there" Hank said pointing at the screen.
"Yeah, probably Andre being a lookout" Kevin piped in.
"Let me mess with it, hold on" Adam mumbled loud enough for all of us to understand, "Yeah, all I can make out is his sneaker" ༘⋆🌷🫧💭₊˚ෆ
Pulling up to the house, Kim Jay, and Isabella got out of my Jeep with our guns out and Jay holding a battering ram. The team walked up to the front of the house while Adam, Kevin, and Antonio took the back
Jay kicked the door open with the ram and Isabella walked into the house clearing both sides as she walked towards an entryway she peeked in a little before shots were fired at her she reacted quickly and docked behind the wall.
He ran out of the house where he continued to fire shots at Adam and Kevin.
"Park, you good?" Jay asked Isabella checking on her as Kim and Antonio moved forward.
"Yeah," she replied said.
"Clear!"
"Clear!"
Kim and Antonio yelled out as they cleared the rest of the house.
Isabella and Antonio ran towards what Hank had said over the radio. Seeing Andre on the ground and Kevin lowering his weapon, Andre sat on the ground looking at both Hank and Kevin.
Isabella walked towards him and grabbed him by the hand "Get up," She said, "You're under arrest for the murder of Roland Garrett" and handcuffed him bushing passed Kevin and Hank.
Antonio followed behind her walking back towards the car that was parked behind Hank's car. ༘⋆🌷🫧💭₊˚ෆ
Back at the district, the team had planned to meet up for some drinks after work the others had already left leaving Kim and Isabella the only ones in the the locker room as they packed their things.
"Hey, Isabella would you like to join us at Molly's?" Kim said closing her locker.
Isabella closed her locker picking up her bag, "Uhh, I already made plans with some friends actually" Isabella said following her out of the locker room.
"Oh bummer," she said with a frown on her face, "have fun," she said sending me a wink.
"Have a drink for me" Isabella said smiling at her.
"So how was the flight?" Isabella asked Eleanor as brought a spoonful of rice to her mouth
"It was tiring, it felt like the plane ride was five years, but I'm glad to be home again," Eleanor said throwing her hands up into the air.
Isabella let out a laugh, "Ya! People are looking at us like we are crazy" shaking her head.
"Crazy women," Stephanie said hitting the back of her head.
"Any guy in your life?" Eleanor asked as Isabella brought the beer bottle to her lips.
"No, just sleeping around, I have needs that need to be taken care of sometimes I can't do it on my own," Isabella said drinking a shot of soju.
"Will you ever give me a chance?" Luke asked tilting his head with a smile
"Oppa, you are such a close friend of mine. I don't see you as a boyfriend" I said shaking my head.
"Damn friend zoned" Eleanor laughed at his attempt to make another move on Isabella again.
"Again," Stephanie said clapping her hands together.
"Fuck you guys," he said pouting.
The girls just giggled at him Luke just glaring at them.
"Luke, the redhead at the bar has been giving you fuck me eyes," Isabella said pointing with her head causing Luke to turn around "Go for it"
"But I'm here with you guys tonight--I can't leave you," Luke said biting his lip.
"Just go for it, we don't mind," Stephanie said
"Are you guys sure?"
"Go for it!"
"Next dinner is on me," Luke said and sprit out of his chair.
"What's a nice expensive restaurant?" Isabella said with a smirk on her face.

A lot...has happened.

Okay they're busy and I don't care and I can't care since I need to fuck off. There's two floors above, metal platforms in the shape of a circle, and I'm still looking for an escape. Is there a way out??
My pen died. I am dying mentally.
There's a ladder and it goes up to the first floor. I need to get there. There's so much screaming in the middle and I need to leave and my head hurts and my ears are pierced by the sounds. I need to leave, I'm not as durable as Lara Croft.
What the heck, here is something hanging from...the ceiling? I don't have much time, I'll try to sketch out what I see. I'm upstairs, and I can barely write. There is something? Hanging? From there, it looks kinda humanoid, not quite. Could it be a true nephilim? The one Eckhardt wanted to use?
There's also a platform with a golden disk and it is looking like this: Somehow it's flower shaped, has symbols surrounding it, spaces for five pieces to be inserted, the stuff hidden in the Obscura Paintings! I think this could be the Sanglyph. It's five golden pieces and they could be used (unreadable)

Transcript of the third and fourth page: Okay I'm not sure what to do, what happened or anything. Honestly all is a blur. I woke up and there's a lot of rumble, dust and chaos. The Sleeper is gone, the room is destroyed. Eckhardt is gone, so is Miss Croft, so is my head, it hurts fucking badly. I'm okay, I think, my head is shit, I have cuts, my already sore knee is bleeding, it's...aweful. There's an open gate on the ground floor, and I hope it leads outside.
It has to.
In the debris I've seen a small piece of this flower-shaped thingy. It's a metal part that I think belonged in the Obscura Paintings. I took it with me. I'm on my way to the train station...finally. If Lara Croft is really the archeologist I think she is, she'd be interested in the piece. If I manage to offer her this metal plate, maybe she'll talk to me about her knowledge of the Paintings, Eckhardt, and the Sleeper?
I am finally back at civilization and am seeing living human beings again. I got myself a new Shirt, washed myself and my wounds and got medical gauze to treat my knee. My head stopped hurting when I drank plenty of water, luckily I was only dehydrated. Surely if I ever tell anybody about what I had seen I'll be considered a maniac...I thought about what to ask Miss Croft. I made a small list:
Is Eckhardt really this 500 year old alchemist?
Who is Kurtis Trent? What'd he got to do with the LV?
Was he responsible for the Monstrum killings since I assume you weren't?
What do you know about the Sanglyph?
The Periapt Shards can kill Eckhardt, right?
What purpose serves the Sanitarium?

Transcript of the fifth, sixth and seventh page: I'll be in Paris soon. I slept until now, the train ride takes so long and I'm just so exhausted. This journey is almost over, but I might be able to find even more. In case of Lara Croftwants to talk to me. I'll write her an email. Will she reply?
We're arriving at Paris. I wrote her a mail with a photo of the Sanglyph piece, asking her whether she'd like it in return for some answers. I even offered her to send her this notebook. I'm sure she'll return it either way, I trust her reputation, and I can prove my volicity and that I'm not a paranoid stalker or something.
UPDATE: It's been a week since I arrived back home and I got a LETTER via CURIER, can you believe that? Lara Croft is indeed interested in the piece and she invited me to London. She had the tickets in the mail, too. I cannot believe it!
She writes she is delighted I survived (I laughed here) and I should come over within two weeks. And that in case I come over with bad intention she's going to shoot me. I think...I think she means that.

Transcript of the eighth and ninth page: The tickets are valid for two weeks for any flight in first class. A ticket to get to London AND come back.
I'm really on my way to London. Tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. I'm a bit nervous obviously, and the spartanic answer is more than I thought I'd get, but still. Meeting her in person while knowing what she went through is like...we've been in the same places. Seen similar things. I know about this maniac that wants to take over the world, that accused and framed her for murder, I know about the Lux Veritatis and their only member that is still alive (if he is, now). I'll miss the Sanglyph- it's the only thing that can confirm my story. But in Lara's collection not only will it be safe, but it won't do any damage no more. Maybe through her I can also contact Kurtis Trent? He can answer about the LV way more I think. I'll take some pics of the manor if I may. Oh! I'm excited.

Transcript of the tenth and eleventh page: I arrived at the airport in London. I also got a new pen since I've written so much in this book I needed one. It's almost as if I'm at a new chapter right now and since I'm moving countries again- yeah. I think I'm on a good way. The butler, his name is Winston, picked me up in a black cab. I got checked thoroughly for weapons, metals, cameras and whatnot and now I'm on my way to the Croft Manor. I've gotten a few wishes by Miss Croft concearning the talk:
I'm not allowed to take photos of the Manor, but she'll hand me one of the Sanglyph.
She'll hand me the post adress of Mr.Trent and contact him first
I can write down the interview, yet I am to keep it to myself.
So, only here we have the truth.
It's been two hours since I've been here. I had lots of tea, a lot of food and some rest in one of the guest rooms. Lara was slightly cold in the beginning, but as I showed her this book, my photos and talked to her about my findings, like Carvier's death (poor soul), Rennes, Werner's appartment, the poor, poor souls in the Sanitarium, everything she saw I've seen as well. Tomorrow she'll talk about my questions, she listened to me being tired as hell. She got me a key to lock my room and I'm cuddled up in a blanket.
I just noticed how muchmy body hurts. I really need a good rest.

Black superheroes harness power outside themselves—channeling it, conducting it—becoming maestros of electro-ultra-magnetics, masters of ceremony. Amiri Baraka assessed the drumming of Sonny Murray, speaking of “his body-ness, his physicality in the music,” concluding that Murray was “a conductor of energies.” AJ Suede has reinvented himself as one Ark Flashington, and he’s cold lampin’. On “South Bronx,” KRS-One describes how “power from a streetlight made the place dark.” A cold lamp is one drained of its energy—its electricity siphoned to illegal sources. Think of New York City going dark during the blackout of July 13, 1977. Think of how the subsequent looting led to audio equipment ending up in the hands of budding creators. Think of the scene in Stan Lathan’s Beat Street from 1984: how they run wires from the abandoned building in the Bronx to a lamppost. The building, burnt out five times by an arsonist landlord collecting on insurance money, is given new life. The electricity stolen from the lamppost powers Kenny’s turntables and gets the party jumping. Jeff Chang details how the Ghetto Brothers played on the block by “plugging their amps into the lampposts.” He quotes Kool Herc divulging how he did the same, sharing a hack he’d learned watching construction workers: “I had a big McIntosh amp…300 watts per channel. As the juice start coming, man, the lights start dimming.” Light and dark merge like the twisting of two frayed wires. Psycho Les promised to “pump more watts than any RadioShack” on the Beatnuts’ “World’s Famous,” and all these examples prove how potent tinkering can be: a life-giving force, a revived pulse.

The precedent for suggesting superheroic poetics in hip-hop is congenital. Captain Sky’s “Super Sporm” traveled through the vas deferens (vas def?—mos def!) in 1978, smooth operations and muscle contractions assured its arrival in Big Bank Hank’s “Rapper’s Delight” lyrics in 1980 (“I can bust you out with my super sperm…”), and Kurtis Blow accepted the secretions in 1985 (the same year he told us, coincidentally, AJ is cool—no question). Seminal indeed!
Redman’s “A Day of Sooperman Lover” (1992) is Blowfly-level spoofing—not so heroic or chivalric as the song turns from rescuing a kitty cat to a Crying Game situation where our caped crusader unexpectedly “felt the bozack” of his beloved. Worth noting that when Reggie “dipped into [his] Sooperlover suit” it was accompanied by a “quick flash.” The rendezvous might’ve been chaotic but it was no Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos. Suede needs that steel to be ultra-conductive—something like Tricky’s “Black Steel” rendition. Something similar to “The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel” (1981). Flash’s early opus of the scratch and prismatic turntablism relied on disassembly of The Official Adventures of Flash Gordon (1966) record as much as it did disco data and funk fodder. Look up in the sky—yeah, above the clouds like Gang Starr in ’98, with Preemo pulling from Superman: The Man from Krypton, a 1978 children’s record.

The fixation probably apexed with the Last Emperor’s “Secret Wars.” “What if I had the power to gather all of my favorite MCs,” he proposed, “with the illest comic book characters and they became archenemies?” The original writing and recording of “Secret Wars” dates back to 1995 and ’96. Last Emp told David Ma that MCs and superheroes both operate as “modern day mythology.” Hip-hop heads decolonized comic conventions like Fanon, placing Black Masks over White Skins: Jean Grae, Ironman, MF DOOM, et cetera, and it don’t stop, and it can’t stop.

The fact that most Black superheroes use electricity speaks to a historical tendency for [particularly non-Black] comic writers and illustrators to codify stereotyped representations of identity. AJ Suede, though, celebrates the commonality of so many Black superheroes with an emphasis on their weaponizing of electricity. Purveyors of potent defenses (a double portion of protection, ELUCID would say) whose Main Source of power derives from an [ec]static breaking of atoms.
Suede deads the myth of superpredator and elevates a superhero mythopoeia super-suited to an Age of Incendiary Devices. He assembles a team (in hip-hop we might call it a crew) of comic book characters to demonstrate that most Black superheroes use electricity. Whether he presents this as a tired trope or point of pride is left ambiguous, but I prefer to think of it as a salute to the commonality.

AJ Suede holds a “couple of lanterns, lighting the path,” and the desire path leads us to Edison’s Lab in Menlo Park, New Jeruzalem. It was there that Lewis Latimer took eight steps to perfecting the carbon filament after Edison caught the L. Latimer literally wrote the book on electric light: Incandescent Electric Lighting: A Practical Description of the Edison System. History, as it goes, has made Latimer the lesser-known, but we can measure his impact in such luminaries as Bigg Jus. “I blow mics like filaments,” Jus rapped on CoFlow’s “Silence.” “I’m tungsten light within that causes something.” Something. What it causes must be too ineffable. Suede describes his “armor like tungsten, wolfram, / Wonder who indestructible.” Last Emp teased, Inconceivable? Unbelievable? On “Electric Relaxation,” Q-Tip claimed to be “stronger than Teflon.” We can thank Lewis Latimer for the threaded socket as well. See it on the cover of the Project Blowed compilation from 1995: a bare bulb hanging down, suspended in a white void, hinting at the empty-headed ingenuity of the most virtuosic freestyles to emerge from the MCs serving the Good Life. “There’s something special inside of my mental cargo vessel,” Aceyalone raps on “I Think,” “and it runs on lethal, ethyl methane, profane, / Kinda like a flux capacitor.” He thinks—bright bulb idea sharer. 88 MPH stream-of-consciousness thoughts. 1.21 gigawatts powered by either plutonium or hooked pole + lightning bolt.

Granville T. Woods got labeled “Black Edison,” but—actual fact—Thomas Alva should’ve been dubbed “White Woods.” Edison tried to jack Woods’ steez, claiming ownership (as oppressors are wont to do) to his patents, but Woods was having none of that litigious noise and won in court. Edison wanted credit for a creation that wasn’t his, but Woods was like, “That goddamn credit? Dead it, / You think a white inventor paying you back?—shit, forget it!” With his Synchronous Multiplex Railway Telegraph, Woods equipped trains with magnetic forces for the purpose of communication long before DONDI and FUTURA were bombing ’em.
And what was Edison up to in the meantime? He produced an 1896 film, The Watermelon Eating Contest, which featured “two of the colored gentry eating melon on a wager.” In 1905, he promulgated a worser racial cinematic vision with the Edwin S. Porter-directed The Watermelon Patch, which depicts a melon heist by “darkies” and a pursuit of the thieves by scarecrows-turned-skeletons. Subsequently, we see bloodhounds and cakewalking. On “Most Black Superheroes,” AJ Suede circumvents the mob. He moves “left with the science, but right with the math.” Red-right, white-left, Buck 65 rapped in 1999, memorizing his RCA cables. The wrath of Suede’s math is on par with Jeru’s—he knows how and when to plug in, to plug tune, when to summon storms from the grass surrounding the watermelon patch.

That AJ Suede is singing about Black superheroes distracts from his own heroics. Behind his “Ark Flashington” alter ego, Suede gathers the “harvest abundant [for] feeding the village.” The pun on “arc” weds his electrifying powers to “ark” in a Noachian sense. “Ark,” from the Latin arca, meaning “chest,” alludes to a coffer for storing secrets (abilities, identities) or a chest in an anatomical or figurative sense: the seat of emotional strength and fortitude. The “ark” in Ark Flashington, there-to-the-fore, is the chest from which AJ Suede’s arcane language springs. As purple lightning flashed and purple haze lifted, Cam’ron rapped on 2004’s “More Gangsta Music” about “walk[ing] around like [he’s] got an S on [his] chest.” He had the “Tec on [his] left,” but it’s not a TEC-9 in Suede’s case; it’s a high-voltage technology.

As AJ Suede welds words together, there’s the constant risk of an arc flash—something, as his loyal listeners, we’d masochistically welcome. The way he tangles spools of l’s (“billionaire”; “still feel”) and coils conductive short-u’s (“deductibles”; “government”; “clusterfuckable”; “but”; “wonderful”) leaves us feeling vaporized. (We caught the toxic fume vapors!)

As such, we should come correct in PPE. Contact artist Lonnie Holley to commission a replica of his “African Mask” (2004)—a welder’s mask, actually, wreathed by a radial tire. Ribbons of rubber and sockets hanging like talismans and outlet boxes. This assemblage of scraps links [literally] the millennia-old metallurgy in Nigeria with the 20th century segregated workforce at Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham. Rockin’ the protective Holley headpiece will have you “feel[ing] wonderful,” as Suede says. You’ll be ready to drop a gem on ’em or, conversely, run the joules. You’ll look like the masked figure on the cover of Ark Flashington—all psychedelic oversaturation and electromagnetic energy exuding outward. Replace the S on your chest with the same inflammable material emblem from Massive Attack’s debut—embrace a “Safe from Harm” simmering beneath the surface of your epidermis.

“Alternating current in the blood gets channeled,” AJ Suede raps as he morphs verb into noun. You’re sitting on your sofa alongside Canibus tuning into Channel Zero, but the cathode-ray tube is on the fritz. Screen all fulla snow. Suede juxtaposes the light and dark of alternating current electricity in our TV sets and—like David Lynch—reveals the light and dark media representations of humanity.

The current carries “through the fingertips and eyes, / Talking to the skies” like Lynch settles his camera on #6 utility poles. Over the course of his career, the Twin Peaks director has been partial to electricity. “I don’t know why all people aren’t fascinated with it,” he said in 2006. “It makes beautiful sounds, and it makes a lot of times some incredible light. It runs many things in our world, and it’s beautiful. It’s sometimes dangerous, but it’s magical. It’s such a power….” He speaks to the ethos of Ark Flashington, and Suede’s “Most Black Superheroes” delves headlong into the racial components. Sure, Lynch has the soot-blackened faces of the Woodsmen (“Gotta light?” one infamously asks). He hideously birthed the “jumping man” (leaping tall buildings in a single bound…) above the convenience store in Fire Walk With Me (1992). The “jumping man” is acted by Carlton Lee Russell, a Black man, though he wears a mask of white plaster. A second Black man, credited fittingly as “the electrician,” is also present in that surreal scene. But these racial undertones are just that—rarely discussed contexts secondary to Lynch’s infatuation with the direction of electron flow and the nature of good and evil. No more than minstrelsy of the manic and unhinged, if that. AJ Suede sacrifices everything on the gallows-like altar of a transmission tower in order to get us closer to overstanding.

Remember how they treated Black soldiers after Nam? By simply raising the question, AJ Suede raises hell and reminds us. “Never give help,” he says, subverting the saves-the-day super duty tough work of your typical superheroes, “’cause they don’t give a damn.” History is a weapon which can be used to recognize the difference between a worthy rescue and an informed recusal.
In Seize the Time (1970), Bobby Seale’s account of his days developing the Black Panther Party, a current navigates through his narrative—“current” in both senses: contemporaneous to his volatile times and the flow of charged particles. Writing at the height of the Black Power movement [calculate Black power in wattage], he notes that our “modern, highly technological society” includes pervasive “electronic surveillance,” in addition to and aiding the efforts of “cops armed and equipped for overkill.” Electricity found its path into his earlier employment struggles, too. “I worked at Kaiser Aerospace Electronics near Oakland,” he writes. “It involve[d] testing for microscopic cracks in metals by a complicated chemical and magnetic process.” Despite mastering the trade and finding the knowledge rewarding, he quit a little over a year later because he conscientiously objected to where the company was moving: “[T]he war was going on and I felt I was aiding the government’s operation.” Government clusterfuckable, in Suede’s words. Later, as Seale was transported by US Marshals across state lines, he spent a layover in a Salt Lake City lockup, what he refers to as “a completely electronic jail.” The future shock of his detainment, with its “doors [that] opened and closed electronically”—absent the necessity of any human touch—reminded him of a “streamlined concentration camp.” “I was on a political charge,” he writes [my emphasis]—quarks, protons, and electrons notwithstanding—and ultimately this seeming scientifikal fact limits his options. “If I escaped,” he reasoned, “everybody would believe I was guilty of all that jive, those trumped-up charges. At the same time I knew darn well the power structure is going to move and do everything they can to try to convict me and railroad me into prison and the electric chair.” And there’s no glory in damning yourself to the living/dying embodiment of Eric Haze’s iconic Death Row Records logo, is there?

Black people must ultimately come to realize that such coalitions, such alliances have not been in their interest…[I]n fact, the whites enter the alliance in many cases precisely to impede that progress.
—Kwame Ture and Charles V. Hamilton, Black Power: The Politics of Liberation in America (1967)
Ture and Hamilton point to labor unions to emphasize “the treacherous nature of coalitions.” As unions achieved collective bargaining rights nationwide, Black workers experienced “deterioration.” In the 1940s, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (Suede’s new crew name, if I had my way) got their victory, but Black laborers were contracted out of the union. Ture and Hamilton quote Myrna Bain: “The excuse was advanced that, since their union contract specified ‘whites only,’ they could not and would not change this to provide continued employment for the Negroes who were at the plant before the union was recognized.”
“Fuck what you got,” AJ Suede raps, liberals, well-wishers, and allies “can’t change spots.” In fact, it’s not a matter of “can’t”—they won’t change spots. The only math they know is a zero-sum game. “After handshakes people still change plans,” so like Public Enemy said, you can’t truss it.

What recourse does AJ Suede have? He signals the skies and gathers the [Black] powers available to him. He recruits Dwayne McDuffie and Robert L. Washington III’s Static, giving props to Virgil Hawkins’ namesake static bolts that sizzle and criss-cross into a Malik El-Shabazz “X” on the front panel of his cap. He hangs a banner from the 1994 inaugural issue: YOU DON’T START NONE THERE WON’T BE NONE. Time is illmatic, of course, and Nas tells us he “keep[s] static like wool fabric”—linking electricity, beef, and even “the kinkiness of Black people’s hair.”
Suede calls upon Black Lightning, tapping his ability to ionize illbient beats and throw up a force field before fists. He brings in Black Vulcan from the Super Friends in case they need to spot-weld the Fugees' "Ready or Not" submarine (on loan). He looks to da baddest bitch—no, not Trina (though she fellates at a pace “like lightning”)—but to Storm, relying on her to psionically and atmokinetically keep the peace. Hardware heads over with metal alloys looted from Alva Industries. In the same way Milestone Comics diverged from the prevailing archetypes and tokenism of Black superheroes, AJ Suede builds a posse that can apply pressure through a low-pass filter or phaser.

“Most Black Superheroes” survives on the subtle cracking and clicking of the Geiger counter in a tick-tock Doomsday clock loop rendered rhythmic: a molecular metronome. Drums tapped out on a cellar circuit breaker rather than an SP-404. Yes, most Black superheroes use electricity, and AJ Suede turns his sine waves square through a fuzz pedal. He abuses the tube amp until he achieves Electro Harmonix. He regulates the barometric pressure between Seattle and Bristol, rhyming at a rainy-day downtempo BPM, tautens the tripwire, and sends the circuit breaker tripping. His woofers thud the trunk of the jeep with melanated melankolic bass tones. “Most Black Superheroes” is an electric boogaloo of AJ Suede’s own mad scientist invention—a hip-hop park jam of resistance and Vedic possibilities where ohm meets om.
