tragic beauty: dorothy hale - an analysis

"We all believed that a girl of such extraordinary beauty could not be long in either developing a career or finding another husband. Dorothy had very little talent and no luck." - Clare Boothe Luce about Dorothy Hale

The name of Dorothy Hale (not to be confused with Evelyn McHale, that other eerily similar famous suicide) is not well known, especially these days. In the 1920s, she was an aspiring actress, and enjoyed a career on Broadway as a dancer, including in a leading role with Fred Astaire. By the 1930s, she was a socialite and failed actress living in New York City in the early 1930s who killed herself by jumping off a building. However, the only real highlight of her brief life was her mysterious death, which prompted the iconic surrealist artist Frida Kahlo to immortalize her in one of her most poignant and eerie paintings, "El Suicidio de Dorothy Hale." (The Suicide of Dorothy Hale).

Dorothy Hale according to astrotheme, was a Capricorn sun and Pisces moon (the moon is speculative). She was born Dorothy Donovan, the daughter of a real estate agent, in Pittsburgh. In 1919, after attending a convent and a drama school, Hale left home to pursue a career. Her family hired detectives to find her, but she eventually returned when her funds ran out. Dorothy married fresco, mural, and society portrait artist Gardner Hale in 1927. Dorothy continued moving in creative and expensive social circles and during this west coast period she socialized with artists such as Miquel and Rosa Corvarrubias, Frida Kahlo and photographer Nickolas Muray. Dorothy didn’t have much work; it was limited to several seasons in stock companies and some work as a dancer and Ziegfeld girl. When Hale’s husband Gardner Hale died in a car crash in 1931 (his car went over a cliff in Santa Maria, CA), Dorothy was left with financial difficulties. She was no longer able to maintain her high-society lifestyle. To keep her head above water, Dorothy accepted the largess of rich lovers like Isamu Noguchi and generous friends such as Clare Boothe Luce.

Dorothy repeatedly tried to find work as an actress, unsuccessfully. An acquaintance with Samuel Goldwyn led to an uncredited role in the film “Cynara”, as well as a minor role in “Catherine the Great” (1934). Her screen tests were a straight failure. Dorothy led a life filled with affairs; in 1937 she began a serious affair with Harry Hopkins, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s top advisor. Anticipating a “white wedding”, Hale moved into Hampshire House, a 27-story apartment building and she began putting together a trousseau, but Hopkins abruptly broke off the affair. One evening, Hale informally entertained some friends; she had told them that she was planning a long trip and invited them to a farewell party. After attending the theater, Hale returned home to her one-room apartment with a kitchenette on the 16th floor of Hampshire house at about 1:15 am, leaving a large number of friends at the 21 Club. She apparently spent the next four hours at the typewriter composing farewell notes to friends. At 5:15 am on October 21, 1938, Dorothy threw herself out of the window of her apartment. She was found still wearing her favorite Madame X femme fatale black velvet dress with a corsage of small yellow roses, given to her by Noguchi.

Next, I’ll cover another individual from the silent age who was as talented as he was secretly prejudiced: Taurus Harold Lloyd.

Overall personality snapshot: One side of her was good at biting the end of a pencil all day with her head in the clouds, and the other side good at protecting weaker souls and providing well-packed picnics at just the right moment. Although she was a softy, she was also dutiful and worked out her accounts to the last penny. She was likely to experience an underlying tension between the world of her dreams and rich imagination, and her need to stay in touch with ‘reality’. Worries about being engulfed by life’s problems and whether or not she made the right choice may have plagued her often, even though she was blessed with a concentration that pulled all the pieces of her jigsaw together in the end. But until that happens she may fret and feel that civilization was only chaos taking a rest. But this turned into a strength as she gained self-knowledge, because her ambition for order and achievement never dulls her sensitivity to human needs and values. Whilst she had a responsive personality and a knack of getting along with all kinds of people, she was more of an introvert than most people guessed. She felt deeply about things; she thought carefully and penetrate into the real nature of people and ideas. Valuing the more invisible, spiritual things of life, she tried to build them into the edifice of all that she did. She may not have exactly repressed her feelings but she tended to keep them to herself, for she was not a flashy person; rather, she was always available to people, ready to share her views and help in practical ways when needed.

Her self-reflection made her a bit grave, solemn at times, but it also allowed her to understand the plight of being human, and to forgive others for the weaknesses she tried to check in herself. As a natural humanitarian with a good head on her shoulders, she would have made an excellent lawyer, social worker, counselor, doctor or psychologist. Her penchant for mystery could have made her a talented detective. She had great insight and could often see into the hidden problems and the dark, fantastic byways of the mind. Her logical brain sought to find meaning in the chaotic, and to give structure and order to the unmanageable. But no matter how neat, logical and practical she was, there is a side of you that is instinctively drawn towards the uncontainable, boundless poetry of life. She liked to be active and was goal-oriented, indeed ambitious, but not to the extent that she passed up a chance to spread a bit of humour and encouragement. She wanted to get things done, but she also wanted to feel her way along – a bit – and allow the fates to invade and give her her ration of mystery. Whilst a part of her would always remain private, her energies needed to be expressed in the world, making a difference that really mattered.

She had a sturdy, muscular frame with a lively, attractive energetic face. She had intense and direct eye contact with others, and may well have been told off for staring at people as a child because of this. She was probably of medium height and could show amazing feats of strength when necessary. She met life in a straightforward and energetic manner. Her thought processes were methodical and on the conservative side. Her mind was rational, cool and calculating, and her memory and logic were very good. She needed her career to be strong, solid and enduring. She knew that she must work hard to achieve the status and respect that she desired, and although there may well have been obstacles in her path, her dedication and step-by-step progress led to success. She had boundless enthusiasm and big ideas coupled with high expectations of succeeding. She was also self-sufficient and broad-minded. Her genuine pioneering spirit, positive outlook and large-scale personal ambitions led her right to the top. She needed to learn to think before she took on a challenge, and all risks should have been carefully considered. She was slightly selfish and emotionally intense. She was reasonably practical, as well as socially aspiring and humanitarian. Her main focus in life was to gain the security that allowed her the freedom to do as she liked. Because she was able to establish priorities and she had great determination, she usually realized her goals fairly early in life. She was willing to accept responsibility and didn’t want to depend on others for anything. She found it hard to let go of the past, but she should have so that she could have grown.

She belonged to a generation with a rational and logical attitude to life. There was a conflict between tradition and convention, and the experimental and unconventional. As an individual, she had to learn to strike a balance between the erratic and the conventional. As a member of her generation, she had the ability to come up with original ideas which could be of practical value. Members of her generation were emotionally sensitive and extremely conscious of the domestic environment and the atmosphere surrounding their home place. Also, as a member of the Cancer Neptune generation, she felt a degree of escapism from everyday reality, and was very sensitive to the moods of those around her. Hale embodied all of these Cancer Neptunian ideals. As a Gemini Plutonian, she was mentally restless and willing to examine and change old doctrines, ideas and ways of thinking. As a member of this generation, she showed an enormous amount of mental vitality, originality and perception. Traditional customs and taboos were examined and rejected for newer and more original ways of doing things. As opportunities with education expanded, she questioned more and learned more. As a member of this generation, having more than one occupation at a time would not have been unusual to her.

Love/sex life: There was an oceanic quality about her sexuality that tended to sweep people up and carry them very far from where they thought they were going to be. She didn’t have to issue edicts or bully in order to dominate a relationship. She did it simply with the power of her emotions and the acuity of her psychological insights. This was not necessarily a bad quality. As long as her aim was love, the people who surrendered themselves to her emotional steamroller had nothing to fear or to complain about. Circumstances forced her into confrontation and having to wave her “freak flag” early on in life. She pioneered frank treatment of sexual desire and took it on and copped the criticism for it. Her Vertex in Libra, 6th house dictated that she longed for a union of souls that was based on a model of pure peace and justice. Images came to her mind of a mythical life on Venus, the planet of love, where there was never a discordant beat between lovers, but rather, continual harmony even if played in the minor chords. Dorothy Hale was born Dorothy Anderson Donovan on January 11, 1905 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Her father, James P. Donovan, was a successful real estate agent. Dorothy was educated at a convent and attended drama school. When she was a teenager she ran away from home to become an actress. Her first professional job was in the 1924 Broadway musical Lady Be Good. She appeared in the Ziegfeld Follies but left the show when she was injured falling down a flight of stairs. Then she decided to move to France to study art. Dorothy married Gaillard Thomas, a millionaire stockbroker, in 1925. They divorced a few years later. In 1929 she married Gardner Hale, a successful painter. The couple had homes in Paris and New York. She became a popular socialite and was called one of the best dressed women in the country. Sadly on December 28, 1931 Gardner was killed in a car accident. The following year she met producer Samuel Goldwyn at a dinner party. He said she was a "great movie find" and announced she would play the lead in Cynara.

Unfortunately she was replaced by Kay Francis and only had a bit part in the film. Then she appeared in the 1934 drama. Her friend Claire Booth Luce cast her in the play Abide By Me. The show was a flop and her performance was panned. By 1937 her acting career was over and she was nearly bankrupt. Dorothy was devastated when her close friend Rosamond Pinchot committed suicide. During the Spring of 1938 she started dating Harry Hopkins, an advisor to President Roosevelt. When he refused to marry her she fell into a deep depression. On October 20, 1938 she had a small party in her Manhattan apartment and attended the theater with some friends. After returning home she spent several hours writing farewell notes. Tragically at 5:15 A.M. on October 21 she committed suicide by jumping out of her sixteenth floor window. The thirty-three year old was still wearing her black evening gown and a flower corsage.. Dorothy was cremated and her ashes were buried at Fresh Pond Crematory and Columbarium in Middle Village, New York. Artist Frida Kahlo later immortalized her in the painting "The Suicide Of Dorothy Hale". (x)
