I was poking around for copies of the Matrix comics last night. And I stumbled across what I didn't actually recognize at first as the publisher's website. I figured "biblionaut dot org" was just some kind of abebooks clone

The comics were originally published by Burlyman - a publishing company owned by the Wachowski sisters. It was only really ever used to print Matrix tie-ins (the art book, etc)*, plus one original Wachowskis comic about Frankenstein defending Roe v Wade or something

*[edit I lied. The artbook was Warner Bros, Newmarket, & something called "Redpill Productions." So just the Matrix comics, Frankenstein, and "v for vendetta script to screen"]

So what's Biblionaut? Some new company that bought Burlyman?

If you look at the website, it's laid out like Burlyman is supposed to be one header or imprint under a larger Biblionaut umbrella. But the Burlyman stuff - Matrix + Frankenstein - is literally all that's on there.

The bottom of the page links to an insta account. "We sell books," and the url for burlymanentertainment dot com. Which does still exist, with formatting straight out of 2004

The site's been updated to include the latest reprints/20th anniversary editions, while keeping it's neocities-core aesthetic (unlike the original whatisthematrix dot com, which tragically reroutes to a bland warner bros shop). All the "buy online" links lead back to Biblionaut.

So, my best guess: Biblionaut is just Burlyman, renamed and rebranded.

But it's interesting, looking at the general "we sell books" tagline. "Also the home of Burlyman." The site layout that seems designed for other imprints to be added. The move away from a niche Coen brothers/wrestling joke, and toward a more universal, professional-sounding publishing house name.

Are the Wachowskis planning to...actually use their publishing company for something? Maybe platform some other people's work?

According to Wayback machine, the site has existed in this form for about 2 years - right around the time Resurrections came out. So if there are any plans, they don't seem that pressing.

But given that the Wachowskis' creative career started with showing up on Clive Barker's porch and begging to write for the Clive Barker Presents comic line, it would kind of be full circle

Savannah Daisley, 45, was criminally charged for having unlawful sex with a 14-year-old boy, striking a contrast with her jet-setting life as an Australian socialite.

The heiress was living a “life of luxury” up until her June 27 arrest on multiple charges of aggravated sexual assualt of a minor.

She is currently shacking up in a notorious Australian prison, but before that Daisley lived in a $6million home in Sydney Harbor.

Daisley is the daughter of a successful horse breeder, while she worked in the wellness sector.

The woman had a “thriving social media presence” with 40,000 people following her on Instagram, according to Australian media outlet news.com.au.

Her work in the wellness sector reportedly followed a long history of health problems for the socialite.

Daisley's website provides a window into her previous, less healthy lifestyle.

“After having a childhood wrought with junk food (toxic food), to becoming the resident mojito (cocktail with mint, lime and sugar in it) girl in my 20s, I manifested some pretty tough imbalances in my body over the years," the site says.

Her father is Ross Daisley, a famous breeder of thoroughbred racehorse Choisir, which became an international champion after winning at the prestigious Royal Ascot and Newmarket races in 2003.

The entrepreneur allegedly had unlawful sexual intercourse four times over the course of one 24-hour-period with the 14-year-old victim, the Australian media outlet news.com.au reported.

Authorities allege that she was “highly intoxicated” when the alleged crimes occurred.

According to the Australian media outlet, recent court filings reveal how authorities gathered evidence.

“Police allege a legal phone tap recorded the entrepreneur talking about kissing the alleged victim,” news.com.au reported.

The incident against the 14-year-old occurred in May of 2021.

Daisley is currently being held in one of Australia's most notorious jails until an August court date after being denied bail.

Daisley has been sent to the Silverwood Women's Correctional Centre, home to some of Australia's most infamous female offenders.

They include Jessica Camilleri, who beheaded her mum, serial child killer Kathleen Folbigg, Sharyn Ward, who slowly murdered her nine-year-old through starvation, and terrorist plotter Alo-Bridget Namoa.

Mr Daisley had offered to pay a $10,000 (£5,667) bail but a judge ruled it wasn't in the public interest for her to be released from custody.

The child abuse occurred on four occasions in 24 hours on May 20, 2021, according to police allegations.

Police said they have evidence that the founder of detox business Smart Cleanse admitted to kissing the teenager after they legally tapped Daisley's phone.

The lifestyle entrepreneur, who has 40,000 followers on Instagram, will remain behind bars until her next court date on August 23.

Daisley denies all charges, but has not yet formally entered any pleas.

 “Learning Activity 3.5, Task 1: Where do I live?”

Newmarket, Ontario was transformed during the 1980s into an expanding marketplace for the increasingly populated and settled region. Thus, the name Newmarket. The arrival of the railway in 1853 led to further prosperity, allowing industries—-such as the famous Davis Tannery—-to start up and bloom. Newmarket was incorporated as a village in 1857 with a population of 700, and became a Town 23 years later in 1880. Newmarket experienced another boom following World War II. The years 1950 to 1970 saw the population more than double, from 5,000 to 11,000, and the three decades that followed saw it increase sevenfold. Newmarket is about an hour's drive from Toronto, and a very developed area with malls, shopping centers, movie theatres, gyms, etc.

With a great division of culture, ethnicity, and sex, Newmarket is considered a very safe and friendly town. There are weekly farmers markets in the town, (Winner of the 2023 Market Of The Year Award) fundraisers,(the famous Magna Hoedown) events, and cultural celebrations, all characteristics of a healthy community. Newmarket is a mainly suburban area with mostly single-detached and semi-detached homes, grouped together in large neighborhoods. The recorded population of Newmarket is 91,481, with the average age of a resident being 41 years old. The town is predominantly made up of rural, urban, and suburban communities. 75.8% of the community are homeowners and 24.2%  are renters.  Newmarket is a great town for young families to move with their children, it offers a tremendous amount of diversity, and thousands of new residents every year. In 2021, 33% of Newmarket’s residents were immigrants. In Newmarket there is a normal distribution of age, around 50.7% were aged 25 and lower to age 44, with the average age being 41. 

Like any community, Newmarket faces issues with inclusion, racism, segregation, and exclusion, but they aren't the biggest issues that the community currently faces. The biggest current issue is the fluctuating age and population demographic and that relates to the housing market within the town. The median list price of homes in Newmarket, overall was $1,133,450 in February 2024, compared to $1,078,223 in January 2024, trending up by 5.12% month-over-month. With this steady increase and Ontario's new plan for building more homes, including 12,000 in the town of Newmarket, housing prices will continue to skyrocket within the town, adding to the 5% monthly increase that is already seen. But with a great location, an easy commute to Toronto and the rest of the GTA, Newmarket's location is a huge factor in the increase in housing prices over the last decade or two.

With rising housing prices, the homeless population is increasing not just in the York region, but in Newmarket as well, with over 11,500 in York Region people living without a home. In terms of mediating the problem within Newmarket, the town is following the system the region is implementing. The Regional Municipality of York is working on a Homelessness Service System plan to be used to combat homelessness. The plan includes three main priorities: prevention and diversion, intervention and housing stability, and designing a coordinated system response. To develop this plan, York Region will engage with local cities and towns, community agencies, and people with lived experience on ways to reduce and aid people as best they can. Within Newmarket, I can speak of first-hand experience of seeing churches offer days of food for those in need, food drives initiated by the town, and weekly gatherings in social centers for socializing, food, and new courses of action. Newmarket has been a town of fun activities, great social life, positive and inclusive community, and all-around a fantastic place to grow up.

Police are seeking to identify four suspects after a couple was held at gunpoint during an early-morning home invasion investigators say around 2 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27, a male suspect broke into a home in the area of Beaverdams Drive and Audubon Street near Taunton Road West by smashing the basement window. He then allegedly unlocked the rear door of the home, allowing three more suspects to enter the residence.

The suspects found a male resident in the living room and forced him up to the second floor, where two of the suspects held him and his wife at gunpoint the two other suspects raided the home and stole several items, including phones, handbags, jewelry, and an undisclosed amount of money.

After the suspects fled the home, the man called police from a nearby gas station and did not suffer any injuries in the incident.

Staples Canada laid off an unspecified number of head office staff this week as the U.S.-owned chain takes $1.75 million Ontario taxpayer dollars for store retrofits to install ServiceOntario outlets opened inside Staples Canada locations on Thursday and will offer extended evening and weekend hours. Three new Southern Ontario sites are in the GTA, including Oakville, Newmarket, and Scarborough.

CityNews learned earlier this week that the provincial government was giving Staples $1.75 million for retrofitting as officials said the deal would save $900,000 over three years government has not responded to multiple requests to see the business case or share more information on where the savings will come from.

Bonnie Crombie, Ontario’s Liberal Party leader, is asking Premier Doug Ford to be more transparent about the decision to move ServiceOntario outlets into Staples Canada stores, saying she has “deep concern” about the province’s “continued backroom deals letter addressed to the Premier, Crombie urged Ford to start answering questions about his government’s sole-sourced deal and “end the ServiceOntario cover-up.”

On Wednesday, Ford continued to deflect responsibility on the deal, saying that different officials negotiated and that he wasn’t behind the move.

Toronto’s spending plan for the next year still includes a record tax hike for Toronto homeowners — but it won’t be as high as initially proposed presented the final budget in Scarborough on Thursday morning, confirming a 9.5 percent property tax hike, as was previously reported by CityNews. The new rate is one percent less than the 10.5 percent tax that was recommended in January.

The new tax hike would still be the highest since amalgamation and would eclipse the seven percent increase former mayor John Tory pushed through last year.

Toronto is facing a budget deficit of nearly $1.8 billion “would only accelerate the decline of our transit system,” says Chow.

She also revealed, as part of her first budget as mayor, the city plans to foot the bill for Scarborough’s much-anticipated busway and fully fund the east-end transit corridor that will be built in place of where the Scarborough RT used to run. Transit advocates have been calling for the dedicated bus route since the RT stopped running last summer.

The TTC prematurely shut down Line 3 Scarborough RT due to a derailment. Chow says the 2024 spending plan will be able to cover the nearly $70 million cost of the replacement transit route.

The mayor has pointed to police spending as an area where the city could come away with significant savings. Toronto police will see a bump in their budget, but it will still fall $12 million short of what police chief Myron Demkiw has been asking for warned the cut would create an “unacceptable risk” to public safety. The board had asked for an increase of $20 million.

Opponents argue adding more money to the police budget doesn’t correlate to a safer city. A recent University of Toronto study found no consistent relation between police funding and crime rates across 20 Canadian municipalities, including will go before the city council on Feb. 14 and Mayor Chow has previously indicated that she would not use the strong mayor powers to push her budget through.
