How Cornhole has created a frenzy at Sweden's World Cup camp
UPPER HUTT, New Zealand -- Sweden and Bayern Munich defender Magdalena Eriksson has a target on her back. "Everyone wants to beat Magdalena," her Sweden teammate Olivia Schough says.
Eriksson and Scough are both part of the Sweden squad that hope to win the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, but they are fierce rivals when it comes to what has been dubbed "The Alternative World Cup," a Cornhole competition that has gripped the camp between games. In the run-up to Sweden's nervy 2-1 win in their opener against South Africa, the Cornhole "group stage" took place, with the knockout rounds being played this week ahead of their second World Cup match against Italy at Wellington Regional Stadium.
Cornhole is a simple game, but one that's stirring strong emotions among the Sweden players. The competition is ferocious; there have been tantrums and wild celebrations, while both players and coaching staff have come up with far-fetched reasons not to take part because they can't handle the idea of losing.
The idea for the competition was proposed by team psychologist Rasmus Liljeblad as a way to help cure the boredom that can set in when you are away from home for potentially more than 40 days. For Sweden, whose base camp is in the quiet town of Upper Hutt, some 20 miles north of Wellington, that was a particular danger; therefore, they sought ideas to keep the players entertained. There are table tennis tables, a basketball court and a massive indoor screen alongside one of the training pitches where they can play interactive games. There is also an area where they can practice their golf swing.
However, Cornhole is the one activity that's created a frenzy across the squad.
Teams of two -- some opted for a three-player squad -- met in a "group stage" before this week's playoffs. The games take place in the players' lounge, using boards branded with the national team's crest. The aim is to throw a small hand-held sack through the hole in the board. If you manage that, you get three points. If the sack lands on the board, you get one point. The winning team is the first to 21 points.
The game is popular in the United States, one of the seldom-seen sports from around the world that features annually on "ESPN 8: The Ocho." The American Cornhole League events, which are broadcast globally, allow ACL pros to team up with celebrities for the competition: maybe the winners of Sweden's Alternative World Cup could get an invite next year?
Eriksson, who recently left Chelsea for Bayern Munich, hopes she will be in the running when the final comes around. "It's extremely competitive, as you can imagine," she told ESPN. "We don't know who is the best yet. We are coming into the playoffs now after a very tight group stage."
After a tough start, Eriksson and her partner, Barcelona forward Fridolina Rolfo, progressed to the knockout rounds, although they needed a win over the team's physios to kickstart their campaign. "If we had lost that, I think we would have withdrawn from the tournament," Eriksson added. "We wouldn't have deserved to be included."
Rosengard midfielder Schough, part of a team with defender Linda Sembrant and Sweden captain Caroline Seger, is waiting for Eriksson in the next round. "We had an easy group stage, four out of four wins," Schough told ESPN. "We are a strong team, but now we are facing Magdalena and Fridolina. [Eriksson] is a tough one, but I am very excited to beat her.
"Of course there is a fun side, but we always want to win ... and everyone wants to beat Magdalena."
Once the competition is over, there may still be some debate about who is the best. That's because Everton right-back Nathalie Bjorn and Manchester City midfielder Filippa Angeldal are not taking part.
Bjorn and Angeldal have known each other since they were six. They have gone on to play in an Olympics, a European Championship and now a World Cup together, but perhaps more importantly, they won the inaugural Cornhole competition, which took place at a camp before the World Cup. Given their 20-year relationship, they might have already had an advantage over their teammates, though some previous training with Bjorn's dad also helped hone their skills.
"My dad plays a little bit at home in Sweden, in Uppsala," Bjorn told ESPN. "He took me at Christmas, with Filippa and her girlfriend, and we went and played and had a competition against other players."
So why are they not trying to retain their crown? "I already won once," she added. "This time I felt like I can be a coach or referee and just see because I get easily bored. I can play two games and not be focused anymore. I just thought no, I am just going to watch now."
Eriksson is not so sure. "They don't want to come back and do worse after winning the last tournament," is her opinion. That gives an idea of how competitive the games can become.
"We have some players that get so angry and frustrated which is just funny to watch," Bjorn said. "You sit on the sidelines and just laugh. I would say everyone here is so competitive, so it's hard to name one or two because it's the whole team. When they are going to throw the bag and it goes somewhere else, it's just bad words coming out."
While some members of the backroom staff are involved, the coaching staff are not. Schough jokes that we should ask assistant manager Magnus Wikman why he didn't sign up.
"I like to play and I think I am quite good," Wikman laughed when asked by ESPN. "But in this situation, I think it's bad for the players to play [with me] because I talk a lot with them and [have to make decisions], so I think it's better I don't compete. If I lose, I am not going to control my emotions and that's not good for the players!"
Ultimately, the silliness and competitive Cornhole helps take some of the pressure off a group of players who headed to New Zealand with heady expectations placed on their shoulders by those back home in Sweden. Peter Gerhardsson's side are ranked third in the FIFA rankings and have a rich history in the women's game. They were runners-up at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and finished third at the World Cup in France four years ago. There is a demand for them to go far this summer.
"It is important to do these type of things as a team, to not always only think about football," Eriksson said. "Talking from my own perspective, I know I can be quite obsessive about football so I need things to distract myself and other competitions.
"It is a really nice way to get the group together. These games have been the highlights of the evenings. It's been fun and now we have the playoffs, so I will keep you updated."

Within one week Australia gave us this guy
and now there’s this guy
A trans-identified male has taken home the championship at the Australian Women’s Classic golf tour which took place at the Bonvile Golf Resort in New South Wales this weekend.
Breanna Gill, a trans-identified male, made off with a women’s professional golfing trophy and a large cash prize. While WPGA Tour of Australia stated that it was Gill’s first professional win, he has dominated competitions in the past. In 2019, Gill was named the New Zealand Professional Women Golfers Trust Pro-Am champion.
The year prior, in 2018, Gill was named the “first woman” to win an official women’s professional golf tournament held in the South Pacific Islands after taking home the Pro-Am title at the New Caledonia Deva Golf Resort.
On Twitter, WPGA Tour of Australasia posted multiple photos of Gill holding the prize, and even changed their Twitter account header to a picture of Gill, but were met with overwhelming backlash as users piled into their replies to denounce them for allowing a male to participate in the women’s tournament.
Some name-dropped Danni Vasquez, the female golfer who placed second, as the “true winner” of the competition. Vasquez and Gill were in stride throughout the match, and the winner was ultimately decided after they faced each other in a sudden death playoff.
Tumblr media
WPGA Tour of Australasia quickly locked down their replies section as negative sentiment flowed in, preventing public comments. The users who had been able to slip in their replies before the setting was changed on the tweet have since all had their comments “hidden” by WPGA Tour of Australasia.
“Why are men allowed in women’s sports? Why has a woman been cheated of her prize,” Haringey ReSistersasked as one of the few users who had been able to leave comments prior to WPGA Tour of Australasia turning their replies off.
“This is not fair. Keep men out of women’s sport,” Speak Up For Women responded.
Tumblr media
“This is cheating you are allowing someone with a known male physical advantage to steal females prizes [and] prize money that should be theirs! It’s sex discrimination [and] shameful inequality in sport, a physical activity,” Olympian Sharron Davies added in a quote-retweet.
Riley Gaines, a spokeswoman for the Independent Women’s forum and an accomplished All American swimmer, also brought attention to Gill’s trophy-kissing photo, condemning WPGA Tour of Australasia with a cutting remark.
“Who’s surprised a male is being recognized as the ‘winner’ in the women’s category… you’re right @WPGATour, real nerves of steel,” Gaines wrote.
Tumblr media
As of the writing of this article, there are over 2,600 overwhelmingly negative quote-retweets compared to just 95 ‘likes’ on WPGA Tour of Australasia’s tweet about Gill.
Women’s athletic competitions have become a major issue in the debate on gender ideology and its impact on women.
The issue mounted in public attention after a trans-identified male swimmer, Lia Thomas, began breaking women’s records and winning medals intended for female athletes in 2021. Since then, there have been several instances of trans-identified male athletes taking the podium in women’s sporting events. But multiple cases of resistance by female athletes and their allies have also been recorded.
Last week, Reduxx reported that a male powerlifting coach in Canada self-identified into a women’s category in order to mock the gender self-identification policies. Avi Silverberg, a powerlifting expert who has worked with Team Canada, participated as a woman at the Heroes Classic Powerlifting Meet held in Lethbridge, Alberta, in order to highlight the unfair advantage males have when competing in women’s athletics.
Tumblr media
In February, a young women’s basketball team made international headlines after withdrawing from their state tournament in protest of a trans-identified male being on the opposing team. The Mid Vermont Christian School Eagles (MVCS) forfeited their playoff game against the Long Trail School Mountain Lions (LTS) after learning that LTS star player Rose Johnson is male, and have since been banned from participating in state competitions.
While fairness and opportunity have been cited as primary causes of the backlash against “inclusive” sport policy, others have also noted that women or girls competing against male athletes would be at higher risk for injury.
Last week, thousands of complaints were submitted to Football New South Wales in Australia after a trans-identified male reportedly left multiple female players injured after competing in the female leagues. One female player allegedly had to seek medical attention as a result of her injuries.
After some digging I found that it’s another older man in women’s sports

Field Hockey Competition Levels in the US
Tumblr media
Field hockey is a popular sport in Europe and Australia, with the latter country winning four Olympic gold medals in men's and women's events since 1988, but it pales in comparison to ice hockey in the United States. Field hockey has been contested at every Summer Olympics since 1928 and American teams have won just two medals, a bronze for the men in 1932 and bronze for the women in 1984. However, field hockey has high participation rates in US high schools, while USA Field Hockey, the sport's national governing body, recently announced a partnership with Skyhawk powered by Stack Sports to expedite its growth at the grassroots level.
According to NCSA College Recruiting, there are more than 60,000 high school field hockey players in the US. While there are 263 college field hockey teams in the country spanning various NCAA divisions, American players have to compete with recruits from other countries, including South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland, for scholarships.
Field hockey is most popular in the US in northeastern states such as Massachusetts and Maine. Many of the top-ranked college programs, including Northwestern, Harvard, Liberty, and Rutgers, are located on the east coast. However, North Carolina and Louisville, among others, also have highly regarded NCAA Division I field hockey programs. Students can also earn scholarships to Division II and III programs at schools like Adelphi University (New York), Clark University (Massachusetts), Connecticut College (Connecticut), and Framingham State University (Massachusetts). These schools tend to offer a more balanced schedule of athletics and academics.
Beyond the college level, the ultimate goal for competitive field hockey players is the Summer Olympics. USA Field Hockey selects the men's and women's national teams, which also compete in Olympic qualifiers and the FIH Hockey Pro League. The fifth season of the FIH Pro League, which featured nine men's and nine women's teams, concluded on June 30, 2024. Speaking to the need for further development at the youth level, the US women's team lost all but one of its 16 games this past season. The champion of the league earns automatic entry into the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026.
USA Field Hockey also has men's and women's development and U-21, U-18, and U-16 national teams, which compete in international events such as the Junior Pan American Championship, U-21 Nexus Championship, and FIH Junior World Cup. Moreover, USA Field Hockey hosts national events to support player development. These include the Summer Bash at the Beach, which is celebrating its ninth year in 2024, and the National Hockey Festival.
Held in partnership with 3STEP Sports, the 2024 National Hockey Festival is scheduled to take place at the Paradise Coast Sports Complex in Naples, Florida, from November 29 to December 1 and will feature tournaments in multiple age groups, including U-10, U-12, and U-14 co-ed as well as U-19 boys and girls and adult co-ed.
Finally, USA Field Hockey is hoping to increase youth participation through its partnership with Skyhawks, which Franchise Magazine lists the as best youth sports franchise. Skyhawks will organize player development camps throughout the US during the next three years, and offer training to prospective youth coaches. USA Field Hockey is hoping this strategic partnership encourages thousands of young people to pick up the sport.

Foo Fighters 24 January 2024 Apollo Projects Stadium Christ Church New Zealand Poster By Chris Thornley T Shirt In terms of skills it depends what position they are moving from and to, but I think a season of training with a pro side and some regional amateur rugby games in the lower leagues followed by 1-2 seasons playing below the top flight would be required, if they had the right attributes to reach the top flight. It could be 2 years in total for a winger, or 4 for a more involved position with higher technical and tactical requirements. A player with exceptional physical attributes like being able to run a sub-11 second 100m at 275lbs and a lethal side-step or being fit at 300lbs and immensely strong and Foo Fighters 24 January 2024 Apollo Projects Stadium Christ Church New Zealand Poster By Chris Thornley T Shirt explosive might make it earlier as their attacking threat with the ball in hand would do more to cancel out their shortcomings than a more physcially average player.

Hockey Olympic Qualifiers: USA Coach To Use Experience Of Chile To Tackle Crowd Pressure In India
Tumblr media
Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astro: Having played against hosts Chile during the Pan-Am Games in Chile, the United States women's team has gained some experience in tackling partisan crows and are planning to use that experience when they take on hosts India at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astro Turf Hockey Stadium here on Saturday. The stadium is expected to be jam-packed for all the matches the Indian team will play and their opponents are wary of the pressure that would create on their players. But USA coach David Passmore said the experience they gained in Chile could come in handy in India. "Well, we'll have one fan in the crowd actually! But yeah, we got to play Chile in Chile during the Pan-Am Game. So kind of using that experience in our favour to kind of lean on that. And I think our team is well prepared in a lot of different ways from our preparation to handle a match like that and to handle, you know, the crowd excitement," said Passmore in his pre-tournament press conference here. Talking about the experience of playing in the Pan-Am Games, Passmore said it gave them a tremendous benefit. "Yeah, I think playing any major tournament which has an Olympics at the end of it as a, as a as an outcome is, is of real value. I think the other thing, it was the first time the team had truly been together playing a tournament as opposed to the Pro League, which has a slightly different format. And you know you don't necessarily play in Pro League, you don't play knockout matches." "So, I think it gave us a tremendous benefit to know and understand how to manage a tournament and also to sort of take one game at a time. And also you know different things arise during tournaments that you have to manage, injury, illness, all those kinds of things. And I think we're far better at doing that now because of that experience. And I generally believe we had a really good tournament at Pan-Am's and could have come out and not had to be here," he said. Asked about the experience of playing against former coach Schopman, team USA co-captain Amanda Colini said five players were part of the team when the former Dutch international was the chief coach when they lost to India in the Olympic qualifier in Bhubaneswar. "It's definitely interesting, but she is a familiar face that we love to see out in the hockey world. So I think we've all exchanged messages with her already wishing her luck and her the same to us. So it's exciting to see her, but that does not mean we will show any mercy when we get to that game," she said. Co-Captain Amanda said the team is quite motivated for the Olympic Qualifiers. "You need some kind of motivation to go all out there if you take on teams like India and New Zealand. I think that the Olympics is motivation enough. We are all so hungry. It's been our dream since we were little girls for most of us, so that alone drives us. "But also we do so much focus on the process of it and finding joy in the process of every day, every training, every match. So that also is a success for us and I think as a team we believe that happy players play better, so finding joy in every moment is motivation as well." Coach Passmore said he has a good mix of young and experienced players, adding more importantly for him, the squad has a good culture which underpins their success. "I think we have a good mix of older players, experienced younger players, and our younger players are quite skilled. And I think regardless of age or experience, I think we have a really good culture which kind of underpins our success and our journey and our path and where we want to go. "So, I think leaning on those has helped us develop a culture where our older girls can or our younger girls can hold our older girls accountable and vice versa, while also our kind of finding the joy with each other in small moments and the challenges as well," he added. Team USA will be hoping to put these experiences gained from playing the Pan-Am Games and the Pro League as the fulcrum on which they hope to mount their challenge against India and New Zealand. How much they can manage to use those gains in practice, only time will tell. Read the full article

So what went wrong ? Well you could argue for a side ranked at 10 in the world, getting into the quarters of the World Cup was punching above our weight already.
But we should have beaten a mediocre Argentinian side.
The problems were easy to see:
Wales has no lineout, and has not had a lineout for decades, and we lost three attacking lineouts within their 22. We need to find new no 2s that can do their fucking job and train and coach the catchers. We're not blessed with giants, but we do produce athletes.
No one in Wales can catch a ball. Ball catching should be on the curriculum from age 4. We should have ball catching eisteddfodau. We need to change this since it is the single biggest skill gap in our repertoire.
The team looked tired and over-coached. .
Why we don't spend forty hours a day with the half backs kicking long to our wings is beyond me. We have great half backs and possibly Holmes and Zammit are our greatest weapons.
But the reality is that we barely have a first teams, and unlike New Zealand or France or South Africa or Ireland, whose fifth team could perform on an international stage, we have no depth.
Garland's last tenure cemented this problem and he has now inherited his own problem. There is no depth in Welsh rugby. That said, there is huge depth in English rugby and they are arguably in an even worse place.
There is no doubt that COVID hit the game in Wales far more than elsewhere. We are in a recovery phase. But our resources are badly spent.
We need a pro league of eight to ten clubs each with £1m in WRU funding, £500k in BBC/S4C rights and £1m ok in other revenues per club.
We need three super pro sides - West, East North, each with £5m WRU funding and proper academies like Leinster's, with a clear, funded path from school and uni rugby.
We need a Rugby Institution, like Australia had for sports in the 90s, possibly linked to an university, where ideas outside the WRU can be developed.
Arguably the three regions would have bases at East, West and North Wales based Universities and would have under sides representing these institutions.

In The Net
I fell in love with a sport when I was in grad school at Indiana U. No, it wasn’t football (Indiana always sucks). It wasn’t basketball (even though IU was dominant back then). It wasn’t baseball or tennis. It was soccer, and IU had back-to-back NCAA championships. I went to many matches at the soccer pitch, and became a true fan.
Of course, I need to throw out a sidebar and issue an apology. “Soccer” is what we call it here in the States. The rest of the world calls it football, a far more appropriate moniker given that the players’ feet are making steady contact with the ball. It’s just that we already have a football sport, one in which an oddly-shaped ball is primarily thrown, and only kicked in special occasions.
But I digress.
As a result of my fandom, I went to many pro soccer matches back home in Chicago during the summer. The Chicago Sting of the North American Soccer League had lured German star Karl-Heinz Granitza to play for them, and the excitement was palpable.
Alas, even though soccer has been played in the States since the 1850s, and at the pro level since 1968, it has never taken off like the Big Four (football, baseball, basketball, and hockey). Even international stars like Grantiza in the 1980s and Pelé in the 1970s couldn’t propel the sport to national prominence. It mattered not if soccer was played at pro, collegiate, or youth levels, it just couldn’t gain traction. Americans prefer a different kind of sport, one with lots of points, and typically not with the finesse that is common in soccer.
If you have ever experienced watching or playing to a nil-nil draw, you know just how intense the play is, with ball-handling and defense on par with one another. It’s that many Americans find it all too tedious.
But not anymore. Soccer has enjoyed a rise in popularity, thanks to the success of the US Women’s team (and to a much lesser extent, the Men’s team). Better yet, and this is the really big news for soccer, the arrival of Lionel Messi. He captains both the Inter Miami soccer club and the Argentinian national team.
Tumblr media
And suddenly, soccer is grabbing headlines. Heck, Inter Miami’s Instagram account has more than 14 million followers, which is more than any professional sports team in the US. Take that, American football and the rest of you wannabes. More than 19,000 fans recently showed up at Toyota Stadium to watch Inter Miami and Messi take on FC Dallas, unprecedented for Cowboy-crazy Dallas.
What really matters for the marketers, though, is not so much how many butts in seats there were, but how many eyeballs were watching on television. Apple TV is enjoying a surge in subscriptions, thanks to its exclusive offering of Major League Soccer. Eyeballs can be advertised to.
Viewership of the US Women’s team in World Cup competition sagged this year, but that may very well have been because of inconvenient kickoff times, and not so much the sport. The time difference between New Zealand and Australia compared to the US was too much for many fans to overcome.
I am thrilled to see soccer finally gaining some level of success in the US. It has taken far too long. It doesn’t mean we should banish the sports that have long been popular here. It just means we need to get another chair for the dinner table. And with a growing Latin American population, for whom soccer is popular in their homelands, the sport is set to surge here now.
Besides, just like with the metric system, the US is the odd man out when it comes to the global arena. It’s high time we join the rest of the world. For the marketers to enjoy all those eyeballs, though, they need more players like Messi to put MLS on that stage. We—that means all of us—need to take the time to learn a little bit about the game, how to appreciate the style of play, and the method to the madness.Just like I did 35 years ago in Indiana.

Top-Rated Live Sports Events on Indian TV: July 28 – August 4, 2023
Tumblr media
Cricket is the King!! Nothing new but when Indian Cricket team plays then the TVRs numbers go up exponentially. And when India played West Indies recently, even though aired on DD Network, the TVRs reigned supreme alongside the average viewing time as well. Fans spent more than 22 mins per session in each of the 3 ODIs and a T20 match. For those who are not sure about the #2 Sport on Indian TV, let me tell you that WWE has ruled the game for years and Sony Pictures Networks India has been using it very effectively for their network. With more than 26 mins average session time, it is great value for money. Disney+ Hotstar has been holding the top position for some time when it comes to Cricket programming. Now it has challengers so they are looking at smaller or newer T20 leagues to boost its programming. LPL, GT20 Canada and Sher-e-Punjab are the new additions to their portfolio. Although the viewing time is far lesser as compared to International Cricket but still it gives Star Sports some leverage to add programs to the top list. But recently concluded Ashes series and newbie The Hundred are clearly showing how top quality Cricket and classy production still draws more eyeballs than anything else. Viewing session of more than 22 & 26 mins respectively, both the series are comparable to Indian cricket on that count. Heartening to see Football fans have picked Old horse Durand Cup and new found love for FIFA Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™ . Will soon share the full event standings of these two for more detailed conversation later. New born MLC and Zim Afro T10 leagues had a few takers but worse was the time spent by each viewer. Ofcourse MLC is targeted for US local market and non-prime time in India, it still had a good start but other #Cricket leagues will have to do some out of the box thinking to make their business model work. Lastly but lovingly, I must congratulate Pro Panja League for having a good start and made it to the top 6 events beating some other Cricket programs in the week. The session time may be short but that’s perhaps to do with the format of the sport but I am sure the organisers would look at the ways to improve on that count. I will posting updates on the “Top Sports Events (Live) on Indian TV” and will invite discussions with experts on their views about the same. #tv #viewers #sports #football #fifawwc #ashes2023 #hundred #indiancricket

Pod-Alization: Violence On Ice & Disgrace And Courage on The Soccer Pitch

New podcast about the most violent hockey team in history
I hope these hockey players had a good dental plan, because iHeartPodcasts and Novel have announced The Fighty Pucks, a new podcast, about The Danbury Trashers – The Most Violent Hockey Team in History.
Geez, imagine that. Violence in hockey. It's ancient Rome's gladiator games, only on ice and with sticks and skates instead of swords and chariots. And don't forget the mullets. Hosted by Claire Crofton, an award-winning audio producer who has worked internationally for the BBC, Radio New Zealand, and ABC Radio National, The Fighty Pucks is the story of one of the most violent minor league hockey teams in history – The Danbury Trashers. The team of bad boys, misfits and bruisers, led by 17-year-old AJ Galante, became widely known for its brawls at Danbury Ice Arena in Danbury, Connecticut. AJ and his father, a powerful businessman with mob ties, ran the team as they went rampaging on a violent path to glory. But all the while, the team was being secretly watched by their toughest opponent of all - the FBI. In episode one, “Game One: The Galantes of Danbury,” Claire Crofton will introduce listeners to the Galante family, and the city of Danbury, Connecticut, where the story unfolds. Listen to episode one HERE.
Religion of Sports and PRX Announce New Podcast Counterattack with Briana Scurry Counterattack with Briana Scurry is the latest venture to come out of the Religion of Sports and PRX partnership. This new show is a turgid brew of sports, sexual harassment, misogyny, and courage by players worn down by a toxic organization. The six-part weekly podcast debuted on May 11, and can be found HERE. The host of the podcast is Briana Scurry, legendary goalkeeper for the ‘99 US Women’s National Team. While the women of U.S. soccer have dominated on the world stage, their fight for equal pay and decent working conditions on the domestic front has been relentless. Some of the inadequacies of the pro leagues can be chalked up to economics, while others have been the result of a toxic mix of gender inequality and extreme power imbalances. Players have suffered sexual harassment, verbal abuse, and manipulation at the hands of coaches. And complaints against those in power have been kept in the shadows—or ignored—until now. Counterattack discusses professional player’s Sinead Farrelly’s experiences with the dark side of the league that ultimately led to an early retirement after a stellar career. But in 2021, she and her former teammate, Mana Shim, took their power back—by telling their story. Their courageous decision to go public inspired other players to come forward and led to a reckoning within the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). Following their revelations, half of the league’s head coaches either resigned in disgrace or were fired. In March 2023, after seven years away, Farrelly returned to the league that she now helped transform and signed with New York’s Gotham FC. This April, she was also called up to and became a starter for the Irish Women’s National Team. Listeners will hear directly from Farrelly––who was inspired to pursue the game following the historic ‘99 US Women’s National Team World Cup victory–– as well as other women whose experience and choices have changed women’s sports forever. This will be the first time audiences have the opportunity to hear Farrelly’s personal, intimate account in her own words. Briana Scurry is widely recognized as one of the world’s most talented and influential goalkeepers. Her 173 international appearances as one of the first African American and openly gay professional athletes championed equality and diversified the sport. Scurry pioneered the first paid professional women’s soccer league as a founding player in 2001. In 2017, she was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Named starting goalkeeper for the United States Women’s National Team in 1994, she led the team on an illustrious run that included two Olympic gold medals and the 1999 FIFA World Cup. Religion of Sports – an Emmy Award-winning production company – was co-founded by Gotham Chopra, Tom Brady, and Michael Strahan. Religion of Sports produces content focused on a single narrative of Why Sports Matter to explore greatness and human potential. One of the world’s leading podcast publishers, PRX is home to Radiotopia, known as one of the most creative and successful podcast networks. In addition, PRX distributes trusted public radio programming to hundreds of stations nationwide, including The World, The Moth Radio Hour, This American Life, Snap Judgment, Reveal, and Latino USA.
