I always loved Pixel art because of all the limitations it has (⁠◕⁠ᴗ⁠◕⁠✿⁠) Unlike regular art pixel art relies on the color itself and every pixel must have a purpose or else it won't come together as well as it should It requires a lot of training and knowledge that's why I am amazed to any artist who tries their best and improves at it (⁠ﾉ⁠◕⁠ヮ⁠◕⁠)⁠ﾉ⁠*⁠.⁠✧ Seeing the artist ercan.ars reminds me of this art that I made a long time ago I almost forgot about that maybe because of the frustration (⁠・⁠–⁠・⁠;⁠)⁠ゞ I like their art and if they're reading this that explains why I tag them and if you're reading it hello I like your art. ‘Erich Mrozek’s color exercises deploy a red square in two opposing compositions. In exercises such as Mrozek’s, “the recession and advance of the form elements draw the BP [basic plane] forward (toward the observers) and backward in depth (away from the observers) in such a manner that the BP, like an accordion, is pulled apart in both directions.” Kandinsky added that “the colour elements possess this power to a high degree.” Combined, colors such as red, blue, and gray produce variable effects that can be modulated with the addition of other colors.’

This experiment introduces depth of field through the use of red and blue against a grey background. I see this as the large blue square as the background with the small red square in the foreground. I think the choice of grey for the background really elevates the colours at subject. I wonder if this experiment would translate the same if I used typography? Although I think the negative space between the letters might interfere.

Painting and Collage

As part of my painting elective, I decided to use different aspects of my poster from graphic design to create a painting representing emigration and refuge.

I used coffee to stain the background to create a base for the painting. With reference from colour theorist Johannes Itten, I am creating shadows and hues from the colour wheel, using the complementary colours as a mixing guide for my paints.

I started using acrylic paint as my medium, but decided to try out gouache for the first time. I really enjoyed this process, as I found mixing the gouache with water made the paint more blendable.

I then decided to create the life jacket using a collage of coffee stained emigration papers, using the coffee as a technique to create tones and shadows.I used this with reference to lecturer Eoin McCormacks creating paint workshop.

I had originally painted the background pink and orange, but I felt it didn’t suit the painting. I hope to create a sunset representing the bright future ahead of the refugee, the swallow being a symbol of freedom.
