MUTCD Compliance in Need For Speed Rivals

Released in 2013, Need For Speed Rivals is one of the Need For Speed games of all time. Being a racing game, the roads are a big part of the game. But, how well do those roads hold up to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)?

I decided to answer this question because no one else cares enough to. This long, grueling process took over two weeks because I didn't feel like writing this Tumblr post for two weeks.

Let's start where I began.

Why is "valley" not capitalized? How did no one catch this mistake at the sign making shop?

Also, that I-4 sign is so very wrong. That is not how you inform someone which highway they are currently on. Below is a much better option.

Just slap one of these on the roadside and you're saving money on overhead signs.

Why is there an arrow? The exit isn't there. It's way up the road. Why is the arrow there?

It's up ahead as well. With enough stupidity, someone could sue the Redview County DOT over this.

So close.

For the most part, I love the sign. While having more than one arrow is not advised, I can ignore that for getting the rest of the sign correct. They even got the exit number sign on the right, like it should be (because the exit is on the right)! However, why is it an exit only? There is no lane that must exit. In fact, there's barely a lane. The exit lane lines just kind of end at the concrete and don't go to the actual highway lanes, so there's no obvious way to get to the exit.

Also what is that physical gore sign up there? Where did they get it? Did they make it themselves? It is so very incorrect. I don't even know where to begin, so I won't.

I'm not even going to question this.

The local DOT must be sponsored by an overhead sign company because there are so many overhead road signs that really don't need to be overhead.

Not only is this a blatant waste of metal, but who the fuck is this sign pointing to? There is no lane there. Why does this sign exist?

Also why does every sign have its own illumination? I know California is like that, but still.

You know what, I'll accept this.

It's a bit close to the road, but I'll let it slide.

This sign is fairly small and low.

Difficult to see at 70 MPH.

Why is "STOPPING STANDING ANYTIME" both smaller than "NO PARKING" and not the correct font?

Also, the "EXPECT DELAYS" electronic sign is very dusty and hard to see.

The lane does not end.

"EXIT RIGHT" is unnecessary, but other than that, it's pretty good! This is what that Kingfisher Road sign should've looked like. The Exit sign is even in the correct place! Very good.

Why does one sign say "Drive" but the other only says "Dr"?

Also, how does it go from West I-4 to East US-24/SR-12? Also also, the Interstate just kind of ends with no signs to state so.

yes all styles of similarities but they also have noticeable differences. We've switched hosts a few times now, maybe three times I think? The first was [REDACTED], she was sort of...I don't want to say the original, but she was very young and sad and confused. Then we had Alex, who was more angry than sad. They were host from about 2019-2021 and are now dormant. Then we had Eddie, who's still around a whole lot, but isn't host anymore. He's cool. Okay so firstly this is my opinion and if I don't like a song it doesn't mean I think it's a bad song it just means I personally don't like it.

So I already liked Santanized and Peacefields when they were released as singles. Lachryma I did not particularly like or dislike, was pretty neutral on it, but though I may like it if j listen to it more but I've still only listened to it once when the single came out because then I got really busy with the donothon and now I'm busy with giveaways and commissions and life and world news stresses that I haven't had the brain energy to give it another proper listen (yes listening to new music can take up my brain batteries it's easier for me to listen to music I already know when I'm stressed).

As for the non-singles. When then album dropped at midnight in the UK I listened to the tracks I hadn't already heard. I like Umbra (welcome back cowbell ghoul i missed you) and Excelsis. That's it. I couldn't even listen to thr rest of the songs all the way through because I disliked them so much I had to skip to the next track because I couldn't make myself keep listening to it, music is for fun and I wasn't having fun.

So I like 4/10 songs off the album. A further 2 I might start liking more if I listened to them more (lachryma and whichever one the 'love rockets' one was) but no guarantee. And I know a lot of people are saying the album just takes a lot of listens to like but trust me when I say I know when a song makes me 'hmm idk but if k listen to it more I might like it' and when it makes me 'nope don't like this one, always going to skip it". Maybe I'll be proven wrong but I really don't want people to come tell me that I'm wrong or I will like them or I'm 'listening to it wrong' (have been told that before) like no we just have different opinions and that's okay, it doesn't make me like ghost any less. I'm not one of the fans who's mad it doesn't sound like opus because?? Of course it doesn't?? Bands grow and evolve and change who was reasonably expecting it to sound like their first album from 15 years ago??

Also you didn't ask, but gonna use this as a space to ramble about my thoughts on the supposed retconning of the ghost lore (literally just gonna paste my discord ramble, again just my opinions):

... im ignoring the retcon and still believing in the original lore cos i dont have time for this.

partly im like yeah sure he can do whatever he wants with his lore and hes never cared that much about it or taken it that seriously. but then the other part of me is like but a lot of fans do the lore means a lot to fans and they love making fan content so is it wrong for me to want tobias sometimes to care a bit about it on behalf of the fans that do since theyre the ones selling out your arenas and merch and movie.. idk

for those that dont know, tobias has retconned the family tree. original papa nihil is the father of papa 1 (primo), papa 2 (secondo, papa 3 (terzo), and the twins papa iv (copia) and papa v (perpetua), they all have different mothers, terzo and secondo are liek 4 months apart in age, and copia and perpetua's mothers are either canonically sister imperator or implied to be hers. this is how the lore has been since like 2010 until a couple weeks ago...

now new lore is that nihil is the older brother of primo, secondo and terzo, and only the father of copia and perpetua. people thought tobias mispoke in an interview but it seems to be the new canon (at least thats what people are saying). which is strange because even in the livestream they had the other day they were still showing the old chapters webseries which states nihil is their father not brother.

so maybe tobias will undo the retconn, idk. i thought he mispoke, most of us did, but now im seeing people saying no its canon so i guess he confirmed it somewhere but i havent seen where

if the family tree is retconned its still canon in my mind anyway. nihil to me is a shitty dad with 5 kids who all have daddy issues because of him, primo's always gonna be the heir, secondo's always gonna be the middle child who has self-worth issues and didnt get much love or attention and feels like he constantly has to prove himself, and terzo is the baby who flirts with everyone but is secretly insecure and wants love. copia's a silly guy who never got to bond with the others and maybe didnt know they were his brothers until after their deaths. thats what they're always gonna be to me.

on a less specific note that may reveal less personal information, a lot of the songs are just fucking amazing

for example, if you're going for a night time aesthetic (thunderstorm maybe), might i recommend "Nothing From You (Redanka Remix)" by Pint Shot Riot or "Watercolour" by Pendulum. put those on during a night time thunderstorm and i will be singing along

other highly recommended songs that i cant determine a specific aesthetic for include "Edge Of The Earth" by Thirty Seconds To Mars or "Bigger Than Us" by White Lies, both of which i will also be singing along to

my point is that somehow ea didnt majorly fuck something up for once and gave this game the best soundtrack (with real songs, not songs made specifically for it) of any game ive ever played. the worst you get on this soundtrack is "not for me" and the best is "I BELIEVE IN GOD NOW".

im just happy ea got all the songs back for the mediocre 2020 remaster of nfs hp

you didn't specify Who so i am picking ones i don't talk about often, *ahem*

in a world much like ours, sometime in the 2010's, magic became (or maybe always was) real. whatever mystique veil had hid these properties from humanity before had worn too thin. suddenly things like mermaids, unicorns, dragons, gryphons, vampires, you name it-- are spurring up, and their existence is slowly tearing society apart.

the history gets blurry between the beginning of the Magic Apocalypse and the year the story takes place, and it isn't really important until later- but here's what is important :

every creature tends to stick to a specific biome or region that they are from or thrive best in, with some exceptions. the one creature that is found practically everywhere and is the Most Pressing Threat to all life :

The Fae.

the fae are territorial, expanding, mysterious, and their realm bends reality itself. the main thing they are known for doing is setting up Trap Circles (of plants or various items). the consequence for crossing into "their" territory is that they must take something important to you. they'll normally let you choose, but if you try to trick them (ie: pretend something you have is important when it isn't) they will decide for you. in fact, most material items aren't Enough for them. the main thing they take from humans is body parts. but they will "generously" offer to trade you - they will take your human appendage, and replace it with an animal/creature's! (most of the time, they still cut off the limb beforehand, because the process of magically transforming a person's atoms into a different structure is so psychologically horrific and physically painful that Amputating Is Considered Merciful In Comparison..)

Now, In Roughly The 2040's, In A "Post-Apocalypse" Setting :

ELTON KYROGUE and his best friend GATOR have been playing in a two-man band named Grand Tour for the last few years. Elton sings and plays guitar (+ other stringed instruments), Gator drums and has a sickass keyboard.

Elton (he/him, 20--22 over the course of the story) is a young man with a seemingly unbreakable spirit. he believes in humanity, sometimes to a fault, but is not by any means naive. he knows that some people only want trouble- but he'd prefer to use clever tricks and schemes to make his way out of a fight.

Gator (any prns, 17--19 over the course of the story) is a crafty little guy, not much for conversation but loves people just as much as Elton does (albeit a bit more wary of them).. she likes making murals on abandoned structures as they travel, as a sort of landmark of where they've been.

the story begins with them a few months on a traveling tour, just the two of them (i call this story Grand Tour's Grand Tour.. very funny i know)

they encounter many interesting characters and places. people are attempting to rebuild society, around or alongside their magical neighbors, so there are lots of makeshift communities that range from small villages to entire functioning towns- each with their own rules, kinds of people, and ways of managing the new world. plenty of these places are delighted to have a traveling band show up, so Elton and Gator find many places to crash while bringing music to the world.

there are quite a few characters they run into (remind me later to talk about the unicorns, the cyborg-cowboy sector, dragons, and skvader, if you want..) but the two i get most excited about are..

Cowboy Dan and Domino(/Dominic).

Cowboy Dan (44, he/him) is a sphinx-like lion man who wanders the desert by himself. a bitter man whose insecurities have plagued his way of thinking, who thinks people are either evil and untrustworthy, or just plain stupid. he's also probably the world's last remaining Catholic (joking, but religion is scarce nowadays). he destroys every opportunity and relationship that comes to him with the belief that this is how people "survive". he's on the hunt to enact revenge against Dominic, but no one can ever seem to get the full story..? (note: Dan normally stands on two legs and covers up his lion body almost entirely, these are just the sketches i had on-hand haha. it's difficult for him to walk bipedal but he is Incredibly Stubborn and Clings To His Humanity For Dear Life.)

Dominic (around the same age as Cowboy Dan, he/him, referred to as "Domino" by everyone but Dan) is a donkey man (entirely donkey) who is the leader of a settlement inside an abandoned amusement park. or, atleast, everyone there insists that "Domino" is like their mayor. if you ask him, he's just "someone who likes to help out". they live an oddly comfortable life away from danger, and Elton (with some manipulation from Dan) grows to find this setup suspicious.

there's a lot more to these guys-- to all of this story, but i'll leave it at that for now ;-) im not quite done writing GTsGT, but it will be turned into a comic at some point. my plan is to first make Curtain Call, and if im done coming up with GTsGT by then- it'll be up next! if not, i have a ton of other completely finished projects on the backburner that im waiting for a good time window to create.

Eurovision 2024: #29

29. ICELAND Hera Björk - "Scared of heights" 37th place

That awkward moment you're halfway through the next update and realize you skipped over someone. 😬

Sadly, I did NOT feel it coming. 😔 Iceland is another one of those cases of "I probably could have liked them, if not for a few detrimental flaws." I mean it's Hera Björk with wine mom disco. There are worse things in life.

Unfortunately Hera suffered from not only her dated song being completely outclassed by everyone in the first semi (bad enough by itself), but also by *other* mom disco anthems from previous years and nfs, including Heaven's not that far tonight, High Heels in the Neighbourhood (lmfao) and Hera's own 2010 song. "Scared of Heights" is not an unpleasant song to listen to, but that's about as baseline as the genre gets, rly.

Combine that song with a lifeless act forever stuck with no movement and a bunch of wideshots at key moments (how did they make it look WORSE compared to SVK's already lowbudget affair?), like yeah, we know where this is headed. It's the "Unstoppable Object Collides Into An Unmovable Wall" of hopeless last placers. There's nothing that Hera could have done to avoid a red lantern, not with that song and that act working so hard to undermine her efforts.

I do have a bit of sympathy for her though. Even a suboptimal Hera Björk is still Hera fucking Björk (vocally excellent and decently charming) , and the bullshit she had to endure simply to be allowed to sing at the Tuesday show was uncalled for.

After SVK's... darksided results - which Hera won because the Anti-Pro-Palestine Icelanders thought SHE had the best chance of beating Bashar although (1) have you seen Bashar perform? Man cannot serve for his life (2) um, Sigga was right there (3) Hera's song was co-written by a Palestinian? (leave it to the Israel sympathisers to be misinformed, incoherent and smugly incorrect - defo, abso looking at YOU, J*n B*rs.) (4) GO TIFFANY!!!! INTO THE ATMOSPHERE!!! - she then had to negotiate with RÚV in order to go to Malmö (although she WON the SELECTION!!) . This as per the rules Iceland had established for SVK2024. RUV's weird decision to play for the moral high ground, but only partially. Like dudes, if you're going to be antsy about Israel being there, then don't hold SVK? and if you do hold, don't be like "WELL WE MIGHT JUST WD ANYWAY [if the wrong person [anyone but Bashar] wins]" like fuck off? Either you make a statement by INTERNALLY picking Bashar, or you don't make one at all by not including him in SVK. Pick a fucking lane.

Once she arrived in Sweden, well... Remove Iceland from this year and everything that went down still goes down in the precisely the same fashion, with the exact same placements for everyone else. The only true difference is that KAN have one fewer delegation to target with passive aggression. Whether Hera went to Eurovision or not made no difference to the contest itself which is some exponential level of irrelevance that she does not deserve to have attached to her legacy.

So all-in-all, a sour return for Hera, but the one Iceland deserved after they trashed their EXCELLENT national final for the sake of questionable priorities, and then picked the INCORRECT winner to boot ("Wild West" wasn't fantastic and (thankfully) wouldn't have won ESC, but it is a much better song than "Scared of Heights" was. ) The Icelandic shitshow was a prélude to what was to follow in Malmö. Events which, just like Hera's participation in this year, probably should have been avoided by competent leadership.

I am a touch selective when it comes to RP, and as mutuals can tell ya, I'm also not great at reaching out first out of character! A lotta stuff I have going is based on dash interactions and has expanded from there! So in a nutshell...

have an rp blog ofc! self insert ocs are fine, but I don't rp with personals, sorry!

being mutual is preferred! if I have not followed u back its most likely for a rules clash/unfamiliarity with a character/lack of mutual... mutuals. I base a lotta stuff off peer review, and its never anything personal! super promise!

HOWEVER, I can usually be warmed up to with in character asks towards whichever muse you're interested in!

I don't RP with the aim to ship so if that's what you're after, it'll have to occur naturally over time! I'm bad at preplanning that kinda thing, never ends up feeling natural.

I’ve gotten a ton more selective and wary with age, after all I've been here on and off since the mid 2010s! this hobby means a lot to me so these days I prefer to put my energy towards the writing itself.
