“You're a hockey fan and you actually got to go to the NHL awards a few years ago.”

“Yeah, it was an amazing experience. I got to present an award there… and I was hanging out backstage and I see Sidney Crosby over there and I'm like, you know, how do I go say hi to the greatest player of our generation? And he turns and looks at me and says: ‘James, I'm a huge fan!’. And he comes up and he's like: ‘We're all watching you in the locker room. It's so great to meet you.’”

Sidney Crosby was his usual humble, appreciative self on Thursday morning after being informed that he was the Penguins' nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.

No, he's not overcoming a terrible injury or health issue, and he didn't have to battle adversity off the ice. But with the work he puts into his game, there's nobody else that best exemplifies a dedication to hockey. With his role as a leader on the team, an ambassador to the game and just an overall great human, nobody else best exemplifies sportsmanship. And with him having the season he's having at age 36 -- 39 goals and 45 assists in 76 games, on a mission to drag the Penguins into a postseason spot at any cost, he's a model of perseverance in his own way.

While Crosby may not quite agree with his own nomination -- the second nomination of his career, after he was a finalist in 2013 after his bounce back from concussions -- his teammates sure think he's deserving.

"It's everything he stands for," Rickard Rakell said. "It's about the leadership on and off the ice, the time he puts into getting to the top of his game. It's obviously well-deserved."

"It's the way he carries himself," added Marcus Pettersson. "He represents the game, in a way. He doesn't only represent us, for a long time he's been the face of hockey, too. The passion that he brings, and the love for the game that he brings, he's a very, very well-deserving nominee."

As far as sportsmanship, Crosby is a model of that both on and off the ice. Off the ice, he's an ambassador to the game. He never turns down media, and is almost always available to speak in the locker room after games and practices. He's generous with his time, as exemplified in a story Brian Boyle recently shared of Crosby spending nearly an hour playing bubble hockey with Boyle's young son Declan after a game when Boyle's family was in town during the 2021-22 season, and taking the time to FaceTime with Boyle's kids when they were back home in the Boston area. He's accessible to fans, with Mike Sullivan noting that he's never seen Crosby turn down a kid seeking an autograph or looking to meet him.

"Some of the small gestures for me are the ones that mean most," Sullivan said. "Not everybody gets a chance to see that side of Sid."

Crosby is just a giver too, whether it be for teammates or complete strangers. I've seen him before in front of me on the drive into PPG Paints Arena for game nights, and he's cut across lanes approaching an intersection to get next to the median to give money to a homeless person. One of my favorite stories about Crosby came courtesy of Joseph Blandisi, who recalled what Crosby did for Adam Johnson after Johnson's NHL debut in Nashville in 2019.

"I remember that the day after (Johnson's) first NHL game," Blandisi told me after Johnson's death in October. "Crosby had his tailor in the dressing room and got Johnny a suit from his tailor as a congratulations for his first NHL game. That's a story I always tell when people ask me how it was playing with Sid, I always tell the story that he bought Johnny a suit after his first game. That always stuck with me."

Crosby reflected on Letang's win last season on Thursday, after he succeeded him as the Penguins' nominee.

"Given the fact that he had gone through (the stroke) once before, and then having to go through it again and seeing over the years how hard he's worked and what he's gone through to still be playing to a level that he is, it's really impressive," Crosby said. "It was much more deserving, probably, than my nomination."

summary: the NHL awards night has come around and with Jack being up for an award, you decide to show him what other prize is on the cards for him. leading to a long night for the boy.

You swore that Jack was a different person.

The last week you had spent with his family in the build up to the NHL awards. Jack was over the moon when he learnt that both Ellen and Jim would be accompanying the two of you to Nashville.

Don’t be fooled, you loved his parents but after being on a work trip the whole week prior at day number 14 of next to no physical contact from your boyfriend it was safe to say that you were feeling a bit neglected.

Even in your hotel room he hadn’t even batted an eyelash when you walked to the closet butt naked. You had been making random moans and whimpers throughout the day but they were only met with concern from your boyfriend.

You had taken a bath before you got ready for the long night ahead and you had made the effort of bringing your outfit into the bathroom with you so that he couldn’t see what you had done.

You silently praised Ellen for pulling Jim into a conversation with the parents of another player “what?” Jack was always overly excited when you had surprises for him.

A smile formed on his face as he watched you lock the door “been thinking about that pretty little pussy of your all night,” Jack confessed as he pushed you onto the counter.

This was your first time at the NHL awards and your first time on a red carpet in general. Before coming here you were definitely nervous but you weren’t going to give up your plus one spot that Jack had offered to you. As you looked at your boyfriend, a small smile spread on your lips at his suit that he was wearing. “I was ready to fight you if I saw you in a tshirt for this.” You teased which caused him to roll his eyes at you. “You’re never going to let me live down the all star red carpet are you?”

You quickly shook your head, maybe if you had gone with him to that you could have convinced him to at least have worn a nice button up. Once you were both ready you met up with his parents and immediately Ellen started gushing as she took in the two of you. “Look at my two babies.” A smile grew on your lips at her words and how easily she had accepted you into the family. “I’m so happy you’re wearing a suit and not a tshirt.” She pointed out which caused you to laugh. Glad everyone was on the same page as you.

At the red carpet it was exactly how you had pictured it. Cameras were everywhere, Jack was being stopped pretty regularly to get interviewed and to sign things. Every once in a while you would get into a photo with him but mostly you stuck near his parents. You would be lying if you said you weren’t in complete awe of your boyfriend and the way he acted like a natural even though you knew he wasn’t a fan of interviews. “I want to get a photo of you two, go stand with him.” Ellen ushered you forward and you did exactly as she asked.

“Mom, should we do an awkward prom pose?” Jack teased as Ellen snapped away on her phone. When she got her pictures, you went back to her to see the photos she had gotten. “Babe, look” Jack got your attention and you couldn’t help but laugh as he pretended like he was snapping photos of you on an imaginary camera. “You’re such a dork.” You shook your head as you watched him go up to the next interview. During this one they had asked what made him a gentleman and his response about holding the door open made you laugh.

“That’s your son.” You pointed out to Ellen who was shaking her head at her son. “He sure is.” You were glad to get inside into the ac and to finally be able to sit. “I can’t wait for us to go celebrate on broadway after.” Jack whispered to you as he sank down into his seat next to you. You were definitely looking forward to that too but first you wanted to see Jack win his award. Except well when it came around to it, he hadn’t won. Your hand went to his leg, giving him a reassuring squeeze as he shrugged. “It’s okay.” But you could tell he was a little bummed about it.

The rest of the night felt like it dragged a little but this was still an experience you would do all over again. When the night came to an end, Jack and some of his friends still wanted to go out and you definitely weren’t going to turn down a night out in Nashville. “Alright, you kids be safe. Okay?” Ellen warned the both of you. “Of course mom, we will.” He told her, giving her a hug goodnight. “Also baby, I’m proud of you always.” Your heart grew ten sizes as you watched your boyfriend with his mom before he came over to you. “I’m proud of you too and you are my favorite gentleman.”

Lucia Fantilli was kind of lonely in the sense that her brothers have always been considered one and she's always been the other.

The boys grew up in billets families in the States and she remained at home in Ontario with her parents.

She visited Chicago often when her brothers played for the Steele, the city holding a special place in her heart, so obviously when thinking about colleges University of Chicago was a big contender.

The boys tried to get her to go to Umich with them, but she knew Michigan wasn't the school for her.

Chicago offered her a soccer scholarship, so the decision was practically made for her

She lived her first year in a single dorm and worked at the library, she met her best friends and future roommates this year.

Christmas rolled around and so did the WJC which was taking place in Halifax, as we know Adam played, meaning that Lucy and the rest of the Fantilli family all found their way to the East Coast to celebrate Christmas and to watch the boy represent his country.

This is where she meets Connor for the first time, just a simple greeting at the beginning of the championship, and a warm congratulations after they take home gold.

She was a little starstruck by it all as he smiles sweetly and heads back to find his family.

Lucy then says her goodbyes to her brothers and parents as she makes her venture back to Chicago to finish out her freshman year.

The rest of the school year is very calm, she flies down to Tampa to watch the Frozen Four, they lose, and then Adam wins the Hobey Baker.

Many tears are shed as he gives his is speech, mentioning her as she cries with Luca in the crowd.

She truly does love her brothers, but sometimes it's a little bittersweet

She flies back to Toronto after exams end to work and hang out with her hometown friends, Luca is with the Umich boys in Florida, and Adam is headed off to Worlds then to the cup playoffs for prospect media and then finally the combine.

Next, it is the week of the draft, and the Fantillis are in Nashville, they'd been invited out to the NHL awards.

She gets lost in the crowd and separated from her family as they walk the carpet, her eyes find Connors as he ushers her over after seeing the panicked look on her face.

They walk the carpet together, he shyly compliments her dress as he greets fans and stops for interviews. Both of them were overwhelmed by the chaos that surrounded them, but both of them kept their smiles as they entered the building where their respective families were waiting for them.

Luca does not like the look of whatever that was, Adam thinks Connor is harmless so he's fine.

Draft Day is more chaotic than the night before, tears in her eyes as she watches Adam get called up into the stage 3rd overall.

He took her by surprise as he pulled her into his chest first, before Luca, a short “I'm so proud of you, I love you Mo,” leaving her mouth as he hugged his twin, a quiet “thank you for being my best friend,” leaving his mouth as she squeezed him even harder.

He's on that stage, displaying the little “Momma • Dad • Luca • Lucia” on the top of his vest as she cries even harder as he looks up to his family and he takes in his moment.

After the tears are dried and the media is in progress the Fantillis leave the crowd in search of the boy.

Lucy runs into Connor once again, congratulating him on being first, he makes a little comment about her dress and how she seemingly looks prettier every time he sees her, she's red in the face but she sums it up to the adrenaline he must be feeling in that moment.

After the draft ended all of the families headed out for dinner and other celebrations, and just after that was a draft party for all of the draftees held by the league.

It's a great time, she somehow finds her way next to Connor as she talks to Rutger’s older sister about the concert at the award show the night before.

She follows him out into the hallway as he's taking a break from the noise and the pictures that are currently taking place between draftees, their families, and past teammates.

“You okay?” she asks a little worried, “been a long day, that's all,”

It was very quiet between them as she sat down on the hall floor next to him, back pressed against the wall, “can't even start to imagine what you've been dealing with,” she whispered, “I would crumble,” she jokes as he shrugs and tells her that it's just part of the bigger picture, he's put up with it for his dream.

She finds him inspirational, he's the same age as her, yet he's so much more than her in the way that he has established a name for himself and he's living out his dreams. She doesn't have dreams, just a need to never be forgotten.

Heavy tipsy flirting follows the vulnerability as he whisks her away from the party, and they somehow find their way to his single hotel room.

Both of them wake up very early, in a bit of a panic because whatever happened between them is not normal behaviour for either of them. She rushes to get dressed and to find her hotel so her family doesn't go looking for her.

Fast forward a few months and she's moving into her apartment, her new roommates Lily and Daisy are unpacking the car as they take the plethora of boxes up the elevator to their new home for the year.

In Lucy’s hands is the last box out of the car, she waits for the elevator, excitement in her chest as she awaits the decorating process upstairs in her new room. She gets in the elevator and the doors begin to shut but not before someone slips in at the last second and presses the button for the floor above hers.

A very familiar “sorry” leaves his lips as they both look at each other with shock in their eyes.

A breathy “hey” left her lips as he stared at her in shock before a quiet “Lucy,” left his mouth, almost sounding like something of a relief.

“You live here?” she nods, “I'm moving in right now,” she subtly shakes the moving box in her hands as she smiles at him.

The elevator dings and the door opens, “please don't be a stranger, text me and maybe we can get coffee or something,” she says coolly as she walks off of the elevator and turns to him with a sweet smile.

But the second that door shuts her jaw drops and her eyes go wide as she stands in shock for a second before making a beeline to her apartment to tell her roommates.

Monday morning. 08:30. Start of duty at the call center. The phones are ringing off the hook. It's going to be another great week, you can feel it. There's still slush on the streets of Berlin outside. Somehow spring is not coming at all this year. After the third caller who berates you for things you can't do anything about, you're already fed up. You greet the fourth caller with a friendly "Grützi". Shit, where does your Swiss accent come from… You're actually from northern Germany… Nonsense! Bern is not in northern Germany. You are proudly Swiss. The other colleagues here have always made fun of your accent…

Thank God you survived this morning. During your lunch break, you go for a run through the park. Your body needs exercise, otherwise you'll get cranky. This morning it was still bloody cold outside in Nashville. But the temperature is rising rapidly. In the early afternoon, it should finally be well over 20 degrees Celsius again. Eh, you mean 68 degrees Fahrenheit, of course. You just can't get used to the strange units of measurement here in the USA. But you'll learn that too.

The afternoon shift at the gym is always relaxed. There are hardly any people working out. Plenty of free space to do a bit of training yourself. You love to confuse new customers. With your roots in the Balkans, most people here think you're an Arab. And when you speak English with your Swiss accent, nobody knows what to believe. After 4 p.m. you have more to do. That's when some of the ice hockey team come to train. They're professionals, they're fun to talk to. Better than overweight pensioners who want to get in shape. Hehehe, but they usually tip better…

The Predators have a public practice tonight. You saw they're looking for a new fitness trainer. Ice hockey was already your passion back home in Switzerland. Now to be under contract with one of the best clubs in the world... That would be a hot deal! And you know a few of the guys quite well by now, maybe someone will put in a good word for you. A few of the less experienced fans ask you if you're an injured professional. Because you're not on the ice. Yes, you really don't look like the typical fan in your jersey….

The alarm clock rings at 05:30. You're awake two seconds earlier. Even though your family's roots are in the Balkans, you were born and raised in Bern. You are a Swiss precision instrument. Always on time. And your shots almost always hit the mark. Training on the ice starts at 09:00. Before that, you want to do your eight-mile lap and spend an hour on the weights. But really I’m happy to be here.” “And we’re so excited to talk about the tour, so you’ve finished the USA leg. And you have announced The Eras Tour film, coming out worldwide October 13th! And it really is a record breaking tour!”

The crowd cheering again, an awkward smile on Taylor’s face, even after years it will always be weird to have people tell you all your accomplishments. 

“I mean, I've written some things down; the tour is already estimated to earn over $1 billion, your opening night in Glendale was the most-attended concert by a female artist ever in the U.S., and your tour has actually boosted the economy! They were talking about her workout routine to get ready for the tour, which truly to Y/n sounded very impressive. Then they did something that at this time feels like the worst thing ever, yet will turn out to be the best thing to ever happen to her. 

Jimmy mentions a ‘certain athlete’. That’s what Y/n believed would end her life, hearing Taylor Swift talk about her confessing her brush on the woman. Hearing that your celebrity crush has heard what you’ve said about them, was probably her worst fear.

Before she could even hear what the woman was going to say, against her own will, Y/n turned off the TV, put on music and finally started to make dinner; something she was putting off before that became her alternative.

The early morning light of 5:30 am filtered through the curtains, Y/n getting out of bed and making her way into the bathroom, and getting ready; telling her google home to play her morning music, getting into her workout attire, before making her way into her kitchen and making a smoothie with her pre-workout.

summary - you haven’t interacted with the Hughes after since Jack draft until recently when you returned to New Jersey for an event .

Ever since I moved to California the night of Jack draft , I haven’t been communicating with anyone in Michigan. My parents seemed to disown me respectfully understanding I guess ? More specifically I haven’t spoken to my best friend Luke neither Quinn . I stopped and changed my number afterwards when I arrived , I didn’t want to have communication with anyone back home especially Jack , why would I break him more if I answered his calls , his nonstop texts hurting us both . Anyways I have had a nonstop schedule with award shows, films to writing music for my albums . Most of my award winning songs were always about Jack but I never hinted at it due to fear fans finding out . Even though they probably knew who he was due to the NHL draft , my phone went off couple of time in the span of seconds knowing it was my publicist telling me my schedule for the next week .

S.P : you have been scheduled to hockey private event on May 2nd , 2022 in New Jersey you’ll be representing whatever hockey team you want . Xxx

that text put me in a moment of distress and disbelief, like was she joking or is she being serious that I have to attend a private hockey event ? and before my birthday really , I couldn’t even reply back due to shock , oh instead I immediately called Trevor Z yeah we kept in contact well he’s the only one who did everyone seems to cut me off . The phone was ringing a bit which was annoying since he always picks up fast . “Hey what’s going on Y/n?” As you hear him speak you sighed “I got chosen well invited to a private hockey event in NJ.” you whine telling him , you could hear him laughing at the other end but also worried knowing how it might end bad . few moments of silence you hear him laughing again “well I’m going if that helps you .” amusing as it was to him you were nervous “haha you’re so funny Trevor what a wonderful way to help me.” Trevor got serious again “ I can be honest here and ask why tf you would be invited to a event like that but I won’t ask , anyways all I can say is the whole Hughes clan is gonna be there so is …” Trevor paused not knowing what he was gonna say you asked “who else Trevor?” curiously wondering who is he talked about . “His girlfriend is gonna be there as well.” Your breathe halted for a second, not knowing what to say or really anything. You pushed your feelings away , “okay and what do you want me to do about that Trevor ?” Trevor seemed shocked when you even said that .. it wasn’t something he wanted to hear really , he always loved you and Jack together especially knowing you would always save him from Jack anger issues . “I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or honest?” Trevor says at the end of the line . You faked a good attitude to hide the hurt in your voice , after all you’re an actor for a reason . “I’m being honest Trevor I left to be where I am today I knew what would’ve happened the day I walked out of the room , ignoring his calls . I’m happy for him he deserves nothing but happiness..” you lied through your teeth knowing you’re not happy he moved on but it was your fault at the end still … Trevor brings you back to the conversation by breaking the silence “ anyways you wanna flight out together since you’re an hour drive away from me ? I can have you picked up on the 31st at 6:00 pm ?” you nodded “yeah sure just text me three days prior so I can mentally prepare myself for your annoyance .” you laughed as knowing Trevor was offended by that as he hung up on you .

||May 1 , 2022||

you arrived to NJ , few hours back it’s currently 4 pm , you were chilling in your hotel room with some friends you decided to bring along to hide the fact you’re gonna see your ex and his new girl tomorrow night. Vinnie , Jack , Jett and Avani became your closest friends ever since you met them in 2019 when you guys all stupidly decided to live together, becoming roommates with them was a nightmare in the beginning as we were all just new and awkward around each other . Hiding every time when someone when to the kitchen . Back to the topic yeah ever since we got here Trevor ran off to be with of course Hughes family , you didn’t really care as you had your publicists running you and your friends over on behavior and how to stay engaged with people for tomorrow night , since they’re all influencers it makes us our job easier knowing what to do and how to act . There always been a rumor about me dating Vinnie since we were always close together, I’ve been spending the holidays with his family for like 3 years now . His mom and dad became my parents , while Reginald became a little brother to me . But we never cleared up the rumors because it was useless , anyways we went out for dinner and came back the hotel to knock out early for tomorrow big event .

next morning was so bad , we all struggled waking up on time , hung over and all . Jett sitting up staring out in oblivion asking me “do we really gotta get up this early .” as if I enjoyed it being awake at 9 am , I heard my phone dinging receiving a message from Jack and Trevor , curiously ignoring Jack message I looked at Trevor’s message.

Few hours passing

you were done getting ready, matching with Vinnie in Ami and the others wearing other designer brands they represented, fixing up as you head to the event . Sitting nervously looking out the window , voices of people around you sounding like water to you as you’re panicking when you arrived to the carpet . Vinnie opening the door for you , giving a slight smile towards you as while you’re thanking him “don’t be nervous if he looks at you ima make sure to eat him alive with my own eyes .” Vinnie says making you feel little better as you laugh at it off . Making it through the carpet posing and taking solo shots , you all make it inside , holding on for dear life as your feet started to hurt . Your publicist points at your table for everyone to be seated but you and Vinnie weren’t allowed to sit as you guys were being introduced to higher people in NHL , few people you have met before . The event was about to start when your team told you and Vinnie to make a speech on behalf of Ami sponsoring this event . you haven’t ran into any of the Hughes yet or Trevor yet whichever was a good sign to you . “Now I introduce you to the these two young duo who one have changed the music industry and acting industry as well with her young age making award winning movies and the other one having girls and guys swoon over him with his work and talent in gaming and fashion , both working and living together to achieve their dreams….. Let’s have Y/N and VINNIE HACKER up on here on behalf of Ami!!!” you laugh as you walk up the stairs to the stage and Vinnie helping you up , “thank you for having us tonight it’s a honor to be here for Ami and being in a room full of amazing people tonight.” You say ending your little speech as Vinnie about to start his speech , you look around to see your friends laughing and having a good time, cheering you both on . Corner of your eyes you can see the Hughes looking at you in awe mostly Luke and Quinn , Jack seems to shocked silently as he seems to be busy flirting with his girl , you’re ignoring eye contact with anyone else for the moment as your attention got brought back to you leaving the stage , handing the mic off to your publicist . Vinnie basically hiding you with his 6’1 built body from eyes of Jack as you both walk to your table sitting next to Avani , she came close to you whispering “I kinda wanna punch him they’re all staring too.” You smile as you tell her “ I hope they don’t come over here making me feel uncomfortable.” The whole night was actually great , you were having a good time talking with everyone around , Trevor giving you side eyes from the Hughes table making you feel bad for him being stuck there but it was his choice anyways .
