someone uploaded a new Hoffmann production on VK and I decided it might be time for me to watch my 50th production and as I'm doing so realizing it's been like 2 years since I've sat at a kitchen table eating dinner while watching an opera on my laptop? I could never really do that when I was living with someone else.
anyway the prod so far is questionable--too soon to really tell--but this image of Nicklausse is enough to keep me going

Top 05: Opera Couples?
omg. I am embarrassingly late to this ask! sorry about that...
5. Gonsalve and the clock, Ravel's L'Heure Espagnole
No context!
4. Helene and Paris, Offenbach's La Belle Helene
i am exclusively referring to the relationship displayed in this operetta and not in the original myth.
Paris got himself a hot older woman... i support it
3. Hoffmann and Nicklausse, Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann
i just think theyre CUTE together! and the symbolic interpretation is cool too ! artist and the muse
2. Francesca and Lazaro, Bachelet's Scemo.
i support Francesca cheating on Giovann no I will not elaborate (unless someone asks me to)
1. Fanny and Jean, Massenet's Sapho
THEY ARE TOXIC! they are BAD FOR EACHOTHER!
Jean can't let go of the past... Fanny wants to run away from it...
but there is something very beautiful and naive about their relationship... the best part about this couple is that Fanny knew that it was best to end it.
thanks so much for the ask :)

Not a question, but just wanted to say an extreme thank you for your detailed summary of Hoffmann! As the 2024 last minute replacement for Nicklausse it explained so much and helped me be WAY less confused about what I need to learn. Thank you so much for taking the time to write that up because it's literally saving my life!
omg I'm so happy to hear that!! I love this opera so much so it is great to hear my nerding out has helped someone. I hope your experience with this role is amazing!

So anyway this (my first) production of les contes d’hoffmann completely ruined me and made me think that Hoffmann and the muse were a canon couple and now I can’t watch any version that ignores their relationship without considering the director a... how do you say, ..buffoon ?

5 opera headcanons!
—Les contes d’Hoffmann: Hoffmann and Nicklausse/the Muse become partners after the ending.
—Lucia di Lammermoor: this isn’t so much “headcanon” as “wishful thinking”, but Alisa murders Enrico post-canon.
—Il viaggio a Reims: Don Profondo is autistic. Really, I’d actually argue it’s canon based on textual clues, but idk.
—La battaglia di Legnano: the kid that is supposedly Lida and Rolando’s is actually Lida and Arrigo’s from a relationship pre-Lida’s father dying and her getting married off to Rolando. however, no one, including Lida, actually realizes this.
—Ariadne auf Naxos/Der Rosenkavalier—the two operas take place in the same year and the tenor in both operas is the same person

I've made a severe and continuous lapse in judgement
I made mistake! I know I've said that the 1988 Schicoff/Norman/Murray Les Contes D'Hoffmann was the best and only Les Contes D'Hoffmann but that is NOT TRUE.
THIS
Is the best and only of Les Contes D'Hoffmann
and no I do not take criticism or different opinions goodbye

nicklausse replied to your post “Opera Meme”
Omg I'm so glad someone else thinks the Brokeback opera is total crap! I was so disappointed by it on so many levels.
DUDE. I went with my best queers and none of us liked it. I mean, kudos to the singers because that shit sounds difficult to learn. But what an awful opera. Is the production always the same weird minimalist staging? I haven't heard anyone talking about it. (probably for good reason lmaoooo)

“Hey girl, wanna come over and be the Giulietta to my Nicklausse as that we sing the Barcarolle from Les contes d’Hoffmann together? (or maybe if you can’t reach the high F-sharp, I’m okay with taking the Giulietta part because I can reach it, even though it sounds like shit. Anyway, it’s not like my Nicklausse low A is super-decent either.)”
