Dreamer is honestly so badass in this mini-series, I really hope she keeps getting used in other stories... (I read this to understand the Absolute Power event, no idea where they left her after it, just hope she's not currently dead or an irredeemable villain)

I really liked the Secret Six issue #1. Nicole Maines does a good job showing the relationship between Jon and Jay and Jay's resentful feelings toward Dreamer. Plus everything about Waller in the background and the new characters. I really liked it, I recommend this book.

The Suicide Squad: Dream Team (2024) DC Comics
I’m happy to see Nicole Maines continue to craft a canonical comic book biography for Dreamer / Nia Nal at DC. Her role on the Supergirl TV series was groundbreaking, and it’s been fun watching her weave Nia into other mediums.
The Suicide Squad? I never thought that I’d see Dreamer forced to work for Amanda “The Wall” Waller on Task Force X. This should make for an interesting read.

Liminal Spaces— Chapter 7
Tumblr media
Hades (Video Game) | Modern AU (College/University) | PZA | Explicit | Chapters: 7/7 | Words: 46,674 (Chapter 7: 8,470)
Summary: Inspired by The Dreamers, except make it 2010s and vaporwave. Zagreus is a university student who feels aimless in life. His girlfriend dumped him, things between him & his best friend are weird, and he lacks ambition in his studies, all while the optimistic visions of his generation’s future are becoming lost. Until one day, he falls into the orbit of Achilles & Patroclus―a charming, yet eccentric pair who completely alter Zagreus’ outlook on life & death, love & loss, past & future, and the transitions in between.
Excerpt:
(cw/tw: violence)
Bzzzz.
The sound of a vibration materializes within the scene of Zagreus’ dream. He is dreaming of his father, and the two of them are arguing. Zagreus has had this sort of dream many times before, but this time, there structures crumbling all around, and the entire earth seems to rumble beneath them as they fight.
Stupid boy! Witless, careless brat! You are hopeless!
They are among the words he has heard all his life—his father’s voice repeating them directly from his own mouth; as well as over and over again inside Zagreus’ mind.
Get out of my head. Shut up. Shut up!
You seem determined to never apply yourself to anything! You cannot be trusted with any sort of responsibility at all!
And then finally, when Zagreus can bear it no longer, grown dissatisfied with the harm caused by words alone, he lunges forward, and somehow, suddenly, a weapon—a sharp blade—appears in his hand. The metal flashes in the light as he angles it, and then Zagreus is driving it directly into his father’s chest with a satisfying split, as the man’s sinews and viscera rupture, all torn apart within. More satisfying still is that his father, who twitches weakly underneath him, does not speak anymore, whether from the shock of the attack, or from the deep gash in his heart flooding the blood up into his throat, drowning his tongue.
Zagreus watches at length, his father drooling in red as the life drains from him, and the buzzing sounds keep coming. There is an odd stillness which follows them however—they’re left to persist uninhibited, and it’s that oddness which coaxes Zagreus awake.
Sure enough, when he opens his eyes, he finds nothing but the sight of rumpled, empty blankets. Patroclus’ phone rests on top of a pillow, its owner nowhere to be found.
Zagreus sits up, swiveling his head around the interior of the blanket fort and feeling stupid for it—because of course, there is nowhere else they could be within such a small space. Perhaps they went back to sleep in Patroclus’ room, he thinks. Beyond the blanket walls, he can hear the dull chanting of the protests from outside again, leading him to believe it must be past mid-morning by now.
He crawls out from the fort. Unexpectedly perhaps, Achilles and Patroclus both come into view when he stands up. Achilles is sitting on the couch that had been pushed up against the wall to make room for the blanket fort several days previously. He is looking at his phone while another eerie, pitched-down song plays quietly. Out of all the songs Zagreus has heard in his time here with the two of them, this is the one he is certain he’s most familiar with, hearing it countless times online, though as usual, he has no idea what it is called.
Next to Achilles, just a few feet away, Patroclus stands there with his arms crossed in front of the wide windows, looking out. He paces back and forth like a caged lion as he observes the crowds marching in the streets below.
Zagreus speaks up into the silence, sensing the tension in the room but hoping somehow that a cheerful tone will successfully cut through it.
“Good morning… What’s up? Did I miss breakfast already?”
Achilles and Patroclus’ heads both whirl around toward the sound of his voice with some suddenness, as if they hadn’t noticed him emerge from his bed. Patroclus says nothing however, and turns back to his survey of the streets. Achilles on the other hand seems a bit more willing to engage than he did yesterday, the throes of his anger once again slackened, though something else still seems to have a broad grip on his attention.
“We’re not hungry,” he says absently. “Go help yourself.”
“Oh,” Zagreus says. If Achilles meant it as a dismissal, Zagreus doesn’t move. “What’s going on out here? You guys don’t want to spend time in the fort anymore?”
Achilles’ response is equivocal. He shrugs, giving an easy shake of the head.
“Patroclus said he wanted a bit of sunshine,” he answers. “Poor flower…. Apparently he starts to wilt if he’s kept in the shade for too long.”
Patroclus shoots Achilles a momentary sidelong glance, but continues to say nothing.
“Oh,” Zagreus says again. “Well, that’s okay. I don’t mind if we just hang out in our rooms again. I can’t sleep well on the floor, anyhow. And I’m willing to bet that all three of us haven’t been getting enough rest, and that’s the reason why we’ve been so wound up over every little thing recently. I mean, spending all our time together in that tiny blanket fort… we should be giving each other some more space—”
“Achilles,” Patroclus speaks up at last. He interrupts Zagreus, as if he hadn’t been listening to him at all. “I want to go outside.”

Secret Six #4 by Nicole Maines and Stephen Segovia. Variant covers by (1) Laura Braga and (2) Leirix. Main cover (3) by Segovia. Out in June.
"Just when their unconcealed hatreds (looking at you, Black Alice and Gossamer) and repressed attractions (don’t get us started) are set aside long enough for their first mission, the Secret Six separate, and an unlikely few of their members get snatched off the chessboard. Hopefully, the fraction of the Six still standing find and rescue them, instead of just sending a thank you card to their captors. Meanwhile, some-one’s digging ever closer to the deadly trove of secrets walled off in Waller’s brain, and the Squabbling Six are the only people on Earth with a chance to stop them!"

Secret Six (2025) #1-2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marvel has their own team of assholes and ne'er-do-wells in Thunderbolts*, so it stands to reason DC would want to put their premiere team of messy people together in one room. And oh, how messy it is! I'm having a wonderful time.
Spoilers for Absolute Power, discussed freely.
After the events of Absolute Power, Jon, his boyfriend Jay and their erstwhile ally Nia are not doing well. Superman is traumatized from being mind-controlled and forced to fight his father, Jay's mother was killed by Amanda Waller and Dreamer is broken by the role she played in Waller's regime. This messiness is picking apart at their relationships, and into this drama steps Dreamer with a new prophetic dream: Waller is free.
Quickly, they are joined by Lori Zechlin, Black Alice; Thomas Blake, Catman; and Floyd Lawton, the thought-to-be-deceased Deadshot. All six members of this secret crew (wow what a name) have their own reason for wanting to hunt Waller down which is explored more in issue #2, and also lets us know their own motivations are going to be at cross-purposes.
I'm having a ton of fun. Half of our main characters are in distressing positions and it's unclear which direction they'll break, and I can only imagine the other half don't have it much better. Jay, in particular, feels like a guy who finally has an arc of his own, from being a kinda bland boyfriend for Superman to having an arc about anger he hasn't dealt with coming to the forefront. Almost certainly this is going to be a limited run, but I will eagerly follow it to the end.
Also it's very queer (of course it is, the comic is written by Nicole Maines!). Jay and Jon are of course both bisexual, Nia is trans, Lori has some baggage and I don't know what the hell Floyd and Thomas have going on, but it promises to be a rather explosive event.
