I keep seeing the odd post here and there mentioning that Ballister Blackheart is white in the Nimona comic and it hurts my heart a little each time I see somebody say that bc he’s actually not! Ballister Blackheart is canonically Asian in the comic, he is East Asian and simply has light skin.
I just find it saddening and wrong (granted I’m white myself so maybe it’s not my place to have an opinion on) to erase a character who is canonically a poc just because they have light skin :/
This is not a diss to people who didn’t know or people that were mistaken, that’s sort of the reason I’m making this post, so more people can know the truth rather than be misinformed or assume incorrectly.
(Context of the photo attached is that it is from a QnA Nate did on the Nimona comic years ago)
Edit: added alt text of everything written in the photo

So I just looked up the meaning to the name Nimona and it literally means we shall win.
The fact that the movie rose from the ashes make me think that ND Stevenson chose the right name

LGBTQ+ Disabled Characters Showdown Round 1, Wave 2, Poll 14
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A character being totally canon LGBTQ+ and disabled was not required to be in this competition. Please check qualifications and propaganda before asking why a character is included.
Check out the other polls in this wave and prior here.
Ambrosius Goldenloin-Nimona (Book)
Qualifications:
He’s gay and has facial scarring
Addition by @yrrtyrrtwhenihrrthrrt First I'd like to clear up that he does NOT just have facial scarring!! He has a visible walking disability, requiring assistance to stand and using a crutch. He appears mostly unable to bear weight on the left leg, and additionally the facial scarring visibly obstructs his eye adding possible partial vision loss to the list so. Just gonna leave this here not to let my boy be sabotaged with misinfo lol
Propaganda:
He’s such an asshole it's great. Still very gay though, he gets injured at the end, and also has facial scarring. He’s very different from the movie, much more of an ass, but still interesting.
Lenore Vandernacht-Nevermore
Qualifications:
in a sapphic relationship, extremely genderfucked, wheelchair and cane user
Broken hip = cane and wheelchair user + severe mental health issues, in a sapphic relationship & is so gender of all time
Propaganda:
This girl is THE sapphic of all time. Literally met a girl while she was being drugged out of her mind and still managed to be gay enough for her to DIY physical therapy for her broken hip (which had long since healed) to be able to walk with a cane to go marry her. she's also just absolutely gender and her gf fainted the first time she saw her in a suit. She got absolutely fucked over by Victorian/Edwardian treatment of women with disabilities and mental issues and went into disguise as a man to escape that
She’s a lesbian who looks like a twink and is brute forcing her way through life with the power of gay love and a slay ass crow headed cane

so i just finished watching nimona right
yes, I know it's been like a year since it came out. Sue me. I never had time to watch it.
But, uh. I can't stop thinking about how Nimona - even as an outsider - gets to watch things change. Gloreth doesn't fight for her when her parents call Nimona a monster and try to kill her, but Ballister yells and fights when they electrocute her and pin her down. The first time, she is attacked and almost killed by her own best friend, but the second, she finds something in the realms worth saving, and almost dies of her own accord.
she gets to see how the world evolves and grows and even though it's still not great - it's getting better. She's willing to sacrifice herself for a future where things are better. Yes, she thinks she won't actually die, and she changes into the form with maximum chance of survival, but it's not like she's actually tested this before.
the Nimona movie is special. the book was really good, but it was written in a time when a lot of marginalized communities, particularly the queer community, were hurting, and Nimona was meant to portray the complex struggles of that; how things can't just be fixed like in a fairytale, and the rot has to be torn out. It was a lot more cynical and was meant to inspire outrage at the injustice of a system built on corruption
however, I think the movie fits better for the current political and social climate. it's about how oftentimes, it's the system and not necessarily the people in it that cause harm, about what could be and how people can change, rather than tearing everything down. It gives people the chance to be better, instead of throwing everything out like in the book. I also think we need a happy ending free of guilt or sadness or questions - we have enough of that in our daily lives.
Anyway, I just finished it and absolutely cried. Ta, everyone.

nimona somehow feels like the PERFECT transgender allegory. the titular character is a trans youth, scared of the world for hating them, finding refuge in their newfound friend. a friend who was the byproduct if the homophobic and religious system that ended up framing him as a threat and casting him out - and, coincidentally, a gay man. they both become allies in this fight against the system that hunts them down, but problems arise when the mc's new friend buys into the demonization of their past, and a twisted version of their motive.
but what's so interesting to me are the LAYERS of metaphor. gloreth casting nimona out like the religious establishments in the real world betraying trans folks and claiming them as sinners and groomers, the influence of public hate on the future generations and the breaking of the cycle at the end of the movie, the tension between bal and nimona when he asks awkward questions about her identity that reflect confused but supportive friends, the whole "What happens if you don't shift" convo, and ESPECIALLY the hints of passive suicidal ideation in nimona's speech...it kills me. this movie is so wonderful, this is what we mean when we say we want good trans rep.
