Good morning—GOOD NEWS! Going on 2 years ago, I published my article in Scientific American about #transgenger + #hormone history 🗃️🧪🏳️‍⚧️. I finished the book in Oct, and my editor just wrote to say she loves it and it will publish next winter!

This book almost didn’t happen. It was so hard to write. It *hurt* to write. Watching the news and reading history, it felt the same—rise of fascism and attacks on minorities and LGBTQ. But it’s done, it is written.

THE INTERMEDIARIES tells the story of that science—itself often strange and remarkable—as well as the man, his band of revolutionaries, and the Institute for Sexual Science, both center of the homosexual and trans community and base of operations for the first LGBTQ rights movement of the 20th century.

Sexual and gender nonconformists, what Hirschfeld called the intermediaries, had a right to live, a right to thrive. They also had a right to joy. Science would lead the way, but this history unfolds as an interwar thriller—patients and physicians risking their lives to be seen and heard even as Hitler began his rise to power. They faced abuse, blackmail, and political machinations; they responded with secret publishing campaigns, leaflet drops, pro-homosexual propaganda, and alignments with rebel factions of Berlin’s literati. It’s a story about pioneers. And about hope.

Now imagine, every time you looked in the mirror you sink into anxiety and panic. You feel sadness and embody confusion. It becomes a trance that you can't look away from regardless of the feelings that explode and cause the bottle to pop. When the bottle pops the illusory shards of glass .. pierce not your skin but your soul and leave you bleeding out. Day to day. Tears. Puffy eyes and no comfort in sight. A dark seemingly never-ending spiral not recognizing yourself although you know yourself in no other way. Your spirit and your vessel, unaligned. Without fail and without success. It eats you up every day and there is no fix.

Until one day, when you look in the mirror you can't stop smiling, with teeth. The wounds have healed the best they can (they will continue to heal). You recognize yourself. You are who you were always meant to be and wanted to be. You are patiently becoming who you always envisioned. Your purpose, your reason becomes clear. You no longer want to take a knife or scissors to your precious skin. The tears are no longer from looking in the mirror.

Except it wasn't just one day and it didn't happen suddenly. It was years of questions, self-discovery, support, accessibility. unconditionally. We are worthy, we are loved, we provide value, we matter.

as someone that's been out as queer for over 10 years, trans for roughly 6 years now, and has been on hrt for 4 of those years, i feel horrible for queer/trans kids who are just now figuring themselves out

it's a horrible world we live in. it's unaccepting and cruel and hateful, but i don't want any queer kids thinking this is the end for them

things are horrible right now, yes, but they will get better. no matter what happens, the world cannot get rid of queer people, especially queer kids/youth

i know how horrible it is to feel like the whole world hates you. i was once young and scared, too. but this isn't the end. this is just the beginning of your journey

things will be okay. it may not seem like it right now, but they will be okay. just hang in there a little bit longer, okay?
