Where to play every main series The Legend of Zelda game (ordered chronologically)
NOTE: when I mention the virtual console for the early games (NES, SNES, GB) it applies to basically every virtual console from Nintendo, not just the Switch. However, many virtual consoles have been discontinued such as the Wii. These are also just off the top of my head and besides a few exceptions are all on Nintendo consoles. I am not as familiar with emulation so I did not include many of those
The original console is listed in parenthesis next to the title which is always another way to play the game if you manage to find a copy, aka you can play ocarina of time on the n64 you just won’t have save states. HD remasters are within the same title since there’s minor changes, complete remakes get their own bullet points since they are a different experience from the original game and include major changes
The Legend of Zelda (NES) - Game and Watch mini console, Nintendo switch online NES virtual console (includes save states, special version also available which starts you with all upgrades and items)
Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link (NES) - Game and Watch mini console, Nintendo switch online NES virtual console (includes save states, special version also available which starts you with all upgrades and items), Hoverbat’s fan remake for PC (includes quality of life changes but keeps the essence and style for the original game)
A Link to the Past (SNES) - Nintendo Switch online SNES virtual console (includes save states), also rereleased on the Gameboy Advance as a bundled game with Four Swords
Link’s Awakening (Gameboy) - rereleased on the Gameboy Color as Link’s Awakening DX (aka the game now has color), Nintendo Switch online gameboy virtual console (includes save states, I believe you can only play DX)
Link’s Awakening HD (Switch) - released in 2019 for the Switch, a complete remake of the original game and has many quality of life changes including an art style update
Ocarina of Time (N64) - requires Nintendo switch online PRO account to play the N64 virtual console (not the regular online membership), was also rereleased on the GameCube twice (one copy includes master edition the other copy includes majora’s mask and the wind waker demo, if you grab a copy you can play it on the Wii as well)
Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS) - A remake of Ocarina of Time for the 3DS, only available on the 3DS
Majora’s Mask (N64) - requires Nintendo switch online PRO account to play the N64 virtual console (not the regular online membership), was also rereleased on the GameCube as a bundle with Ocarina of time (if you grab a copy you can play it on the Wii as well)
Majora’s Mask 3D (3DS) - A remake of Majora’s Mask, only available on the 3DS, I heard the mechanical changes to the game make it a little clunky
Oracle of Seasons (Gameboy Color) - dual release game with Oracle of Ages and can link both games data to unlock a special ending where you fight Ganon and Twinrova, I personally bought this on sale on the 3DS shop before it closed, also on the Gameboy color virtual console for Nintendo Switch Online (includes save states) - PLAY ORDER WITH OOA DOES NOT MATTER
Oracle of Ages (Gameboy Color) - dual release game with Oracle of Seasons and can link both games data to unlock a special ending where you fight Ganon and Twinrova, I personally bought this on sale on the 3DS shop before it closed, also on the Gameboy color virtual console for Nintendo Switch Online (includes save states) - PLAY ORDER WITH OOS DOES NOT MATTER
Four Swords (Gameboy Advance) - multiplayer game, virtually impossible to play today unless you and 3 other friends all have a copy of the original game, 4 GBAs, and linking cables - just watch a playthrough online (although I got headaches from watching playthroughs so brace yourself for a lot of screaming)
The Wind Waker (GameCube) - If you’re able to get your hands on a GameCube and copy I highly recommend it, a remastered HD version was released on the WiiU that included graphical changes as well as major item/discovery changes, can also emulate on Dolphin but the game will completely crash if you use the Pictobox so not recommended if you look to 100% the game (can also link you GBA to the GameCube version to use for the Tingle Tuner mini game)
Four Sword Adventures (GameCube and GBA) - multiplayer game, also virtually impossible to play today unless you have 3 other friends and a GameCube and a copy of the game, I believe you can link you GBA to the game and use that as a controller but I’m not 100% if that’s a requirement or not, I recommend just watching a playthrough but again there seems to be a yelling problem with this game
The Minish Cap (Gameboy Advanced) - I bought a knockoff copy for my GBA on Etsy for like $15 that worked beautifully (just don’t let your gba die while playing the game or else it’ll erase all your data), you can also play on the Nintendo Switch PRO gameboy advance virtual console (with save states)
Twilight Princess (GameCube) - was originally released on GameCube but was rereleased on Wii with I believe motion controls, the Wii version also completely flips the map and Link’s model to fit with right hand motion controls so the game not completely canon (such as TP Link is canonically left handed, not right) , was rereleased as an HD version on WiiU which includes graphical updates
Phantom Hourglass (DS) - requires stylus to play, need physical copy to play but can be played on DS or 3DS
Spirit Tracks (DS) - requires stylus to play, need physical copy to play but can be played on DS or 3DS
Skyward Sword (Wii) - Motion controls are required from my understanding of the Wii version, the HD version released on the Switch makes motion controls optional and has graphical updates (imo the controls are still horrendous on switch)
A Link Between Worlds (3DS) - currently only playable on 3DS
Triforce Heroes (3DS) - meant for multiplayer but has a single player mode, currently only playable on 3DS
Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - rereleased on Switch
Tears of the Kingdom (Switch) - released last year so only on switch
If you want to watch playthroughs for some of the games I recommend Keith Ballard as he started playing the Zelda series for the first time 5 years ago and plays 1-2 games per year (he’s done every 3D game and a few of the 2D and spin off games)
Basically every spinoff game (aka all non canon games - Hyrule warriors, age of calamity, cadence of hyrule) are on the switch, my Nintendo Picross Twilight Princess edition is the only one that became impossible to play once the 3ds eshop closed
For the most part if you have a switch and a hacked 3ds you can play almost every Zelda game. For the wind waker and twilight princess i was able to find a GameCube and Wii copy of their respective games at a retro game store so I highly recommend searching locally. I believe I also got ALTTP gameboy, phantom hourglass, spirit tracks, triforce heroes, and a link between worlds all locally. I also found ocarina of time + the master quest GameCube version for like $50 at half priced books which was one of the biggest wins (i also found tp GameCube there too but it was $150 and didn’t want to pay that much)
If you’re completely new to Zelda I highly recommend with starting with Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, I actually watched Keith Ballard play both of those games while recovering from surgery and started looking into how I could play all of the games myself. There’s also no shame in watching a playthrough as although Nintendo is good about porting their old games, they are behind so many paywalls. From there you can decide if you want to go through the 3D games (I recommend chronologically by release date) or the 2D games (The Minish Cap and A Link Between Worlds are REALLY good 2D games but I love basically every 2D game except the multiplayer games so I honestly recommend playing all of them fjdkslf) . DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE TIMELINE!!! Just play the games how you want bc the timeline does not matter at all and was shoehorned into the series after like most of the games were released so it’s like trying to fit puzzles pieces that don’t fit together

How much are Wii's? I saw your post awhile back. What does it come with? I'm a fan of retro gaming, so it sounds fun to me
They run $160-$180.
It comes with over 1,000 games. 182 BEST NES, 800 SNES, 50 N64, and 30+ Nintendo Wii games. I can add gamecube games also but you'd need a gamecube controller to play them, or the wii classic controller. Here's the ebay link below.

do y ou guys wanna listen to me talk about plastic junk from the 2000s? because I’m gonna talk about plastic junk from the 2000s
ok so this one here is called the tony hawk ride motion controller. it was released for the Wii and Xbox 360, and I have the Wii version right here. In order for you to connect it to a console, you would have to plug in a USB dongle. these little black spots on the side of the board are infrared sensors, and they sense how close the board is to the floor, which reads your leaning and manuals as steering and ollying. it didn’t sell very well on account of it not bloody working, but it’s still a nice thing to have. sort of like the Wii balance board for cool kidz.
so this next one is called the band hero silicon drum grip attatchment, it was bundled in with band hero on the Nintendo ds, as well as a guitar grip. you would slide this onto your ds lite and the drum pads would line up with certain buttons, allowing you to press the drum pads to press the corresponding buttons. unlike the guitar grip you don’t need this attachment to play band hero drums on the ds, it’s just easier with it on.
so the third one is this little round thing, this is a psp. there’s nothing more to say here this is just a psp. Jerez get the car we’re done here
this FOURTH one on the OTHER hand is an Xbox live vision camera. so prior to the Kinect and everything, Microsoft released a webcam for the Xbox 360 called the Xbox live vision, it was just a really generic webcam, didn’t even have a mic plus you needed live gold to even use it. didn’t sell well and most people just used a kinect for webcams later down the line.
as I think of more plastic junk I will add on to this post.

"nintendo may have given up on these consoles" they shut the eshops down because every time a nintendo direct so much as mentioned the 3ds people rampaged and outcried in anger
like that time they announced the luigi's mansion remake and everyone was furious it wasn't on switch
nintendo's just doing what the masses demanded, i'd say you and the rest of the social media hivemind are the evil here lol
"Maybe the poor people living paycheck to paycheck who cant afford new consoles and desperately try to breathe new life into their beloved systems are the real monsters instead of the capitalists who realized they made a huge bundle of money from people panic buying Wii games when they shut the shop down" sure is a take I didnt expect to wake up to lmao ESPECIALLY when you are somehow blaming me, someone literally preaching about the 3DS, for people complaining about the 3DS.
If you want to talk this over DM me, but there is just so much misplaced blame here I'm having trouble even starting to solve this rubik's cube of bullshit.

Images that are not used (presumably designed to be used in the digital manual) in the files Minecraft: Wii U Edition It is evident that various skins were originally going to be used, but not those used in the final version. They include Hooktail being the Ender Dragon in place of Gobblegut, Midbus being the Pigs and Yoshi being Yoshi being the Horses. Another image shows the Ender Chest in a Mr. I-themed design, instead of the Shy Guy-themed one that was released. Zombie Villagers originally were Boomerang Bros, though they were modified in an update to Hammer Bros. wearing the costumes of the Pianta they were before they were changed.

September NPD: Grand Theft Auto 5 Sales Boost Industry [Update]
It's a good thing for everyone! According to the NPD Group, the videogame industry's performance in physical retail was up 27 percent over the course of September. $1.07 Billion, compared to $848 million in the previous year.
Predictably, the most of the increased revenue came from the software segment, which is also known as "where all the Grand Theft Auto 5 money is stored." The new physical sales for console and portable games in September totaled $754.3 million, which is a 52 percent increase over $497.5 million earned during the same time frame the previous year. GTA 5 understandably tops the list of September's top 10 most-sold games, followed by Madden NFL 25 and NBA 2k14.
The hardware sales of the period resulted in $183.2million, 13 percent less than September 2012's figures. The Nintendo 3DS had its fifth month as the top-selling thing in the segment, while Wii U sales increased "more than 200 percent" over August, but Nintendo abstained from providing specific figures on how many Wii U boxes that works out to.
Meanwhile, the PlayStation 3 broke the Xbox 360's record-breaking streak and was the best-selling console for the period, largely thanks to the available Grand Theft Auto 5 bundle as per NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan.
The Accessories segment, which contains giftcards, digital currency vouchers, Disney Infinity/Skylanders figures and other various items, was mostly unchanged year-over-year, with only an increase of 2 percent in sales to $142.3 million.
Update: Microsoft has chimed in saying that it made 80 million sales to retailers of Xbox 360 worldwide in September, with console sales hitting $401.2 million. The Xbox 360 was the No. top-selling console last month, Microsoft instead says that it remains the top console in the US in 2013. Clever words and team.

Nintendo 3DS Remains No. 1. Minecraft Wii U Responds to Price Reduce
Nintendo begins the crucial holiday selling season with an impressive performance and a strong performance, as Nintendo 3DS finished as the top-selling video game system in the U.S. for the fifth consecutive month. Wii U enjoyed new momentum following the price cut.
On Oct. 15, Nintendo announced that Pokemon X and Pokemon Y, which launched globally on Oct. 12, teamed up to sell more than 4 million units worldwide in the initial two days on the market. A full breakdown of U.S. sales for the games as well as the brand new Nintendo 2DS handheld, which launched on the same day, will be included in next month's NPD report. Nintendo 3DS gamers have two exciting games in development the Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds, and Mario Party: Island Tour.
Nintendo reduced the Wii U Deluxe Set's price by $50, bringing it down to $299.99. They also introduced an exclusive bundle that comes with a code that allows you to download an online copy of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD. With just 15 days of data recorded at the new price, September Wii U hardware sales increased by more than 200% compared to August. Over the next few weeks and months, Wii U fans can look forward to playing Wii Party U (Oct. 25), Wii Fit U (Nintendo eShop ), Nov. 1) Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games (Nov. 15) and Super Mario 3D World (Nov. 22).
*Data on physical sales of games in September are from the NPD Group. Data regarding digital downloads of games as well as the combined life-to-date physical and digital numbers are derived from Nintendo's internal sales figures. All numbers, unless otherwise stated, are for the United States only.

Mario Kart 8, renowned for its exhilarating racing experience, marks the eighth chapter of the iconic series, developed and published by Nintendo specifically for the Wii U console.
Launched in May 2014, it continues the legacy of the Mario Kart franchise by featuring beloved characters from the Mario universe and beyond, engaging in competitive races across imaginatively themed tracks.
This iteration introduced innovative gameplay mechanics, notably anti-gravity sections that revolutionized track design by allowing racers to defy gravity on walls and ceilings, enhancing the depth and dynamism of each race.
Upon acquiring it as part of a Wii U bundle nearly a decade ago, I was convinced we were witnessing the zenith of racing games and the series itself. The game dazzled with its vibrant visuals, fluid controls, and creatively designed courses, encapsulating everything fans had longed for.
While Mario Kart Wii holds a special place in my heart as the first in the series I shared with my children, Mario Kart 8's significance is unmistakable. It stands as a monumental achievement, with its 2017 enhanced version edging near perfection.
Reflecting on my children's journey with Mario Kart 8 brings a unique perspective. Though I consider it too contemporary to be labeled retro, it's become a nostalgic staple for them, overshadowing Mario Kart Wii shortly after its debut. Encouraged by their fondness for the game, I've recently allowed them to share their gameplay online.
This endeavor, if successful, opens up the possibility of exploring more modern titles. Such games, while not retro from my viewpoint, represent a bridge to the past for my children, showcasing the evolution of their gaming experiences.

I've never played Super Mario Galaxy before, because I didn't have a Wii until recently, because I was an edgelord who thought the Wii was a gay console for homo-babies and not real men, like me.
Now that I'm 41 and the only joy I have left is making fun of people like that, I got a Wii and Super Mario Galaxy. Literally the only game I have for it. It came in a bundle. From a local game store that went out of business 3 months after I bought it.
That said, the console and Wiimote / nunchuck work fine so I didn't get entirely ripped off!
The thing I am intrigued about with this game is that the ONLY challenge is a result of the controls being kind of ass. I beat Super Mario Odyssey before my Switch died, and I was okay at BotW. I get the modern Nintendo difficulty curve, which is usually "it is only hard because they don't tell you what you can do and you just have to do it 4 times until you figure it out." Galaxy has that. But then on top of that is the Wiimote, which has a perpetual 2/3rds second delay that I just haven't gotten used to yet.
And Nintendo knows I haven't. So they design these puzzle levels specifically to punish me for it. (And yes, this is the second gen Wiimote whatever that has the improved thing.)
What's weird is that this translates into me sucking at this children's game when I try to play it well, and succeeding easily when I'm barely paying attention and just wiggling around. So either I am secretly brilliant at games on an organic level, or Nintendo based everything in this game on rhythm and timing with the Wiimote, and you can only be good at that when you relax and flow with it.
Which sounds like a very Nintendo thing to do. And sounds like what they kind of did way back with Super Mario Bros., where you'd reach some point of zen with it after 47 attempts and just react your way to victory.
And like back when I was 8, this is equal parts infuriating and satisfying.
Good on them, I suppose, for being consistent, at least. I can understand why people love Super Mario Galaxy. Once you get the "feel" for it, it is soothing and pretty and fun.
...I mean the camera is still god-awful bullshit that constantly ruins everything. But if I can be racist for a moment, complaining about a Japanese game having a shit camera is like complaining about an American game having a grizzled dad protagonist who brutally murders people, but it is okay, because he is really mad...?
...I'm not even sure who I was just racist to.
Also I am playing this on a big CRT, so as I play it, my entire apartment is being heated!

GAMING RECAP (JULY 17-21)
The GameCube and Wii emulator Dolphin won't be released on Steam
Tumblr media
The GameCube and Wii emulator Dolphin will no longer come to Steam. Back in March, it was announced that the long-running emulator would get a surprise release on the storefront, but that was soon “indefinitely postponed” due to legal troubles with Nintendo and Valve. Now the team have cleared up the situation and are “abandoning” their efforts completely.
“First things first - Nintendo did not send Valve or Dolphin a [DMCA Takedown] notice against our Steam page,” the team clarified in a recent blog post, before adding that “Nintendo has not taken any legal action against Dolphin Emulator or Valve.”

Microsoft Unveils Xbox Game Pass Core, Replacing Xbox Live Gold This September
Tumblr media
Microsoft has revealed Xbox Game Pass Core, a new subset of Xbox Game Pass that will replace the long-running Xbox Live Gold program this September.
Xbox Live changed the industry more than two decades ago with its multiplayer network features, but the program’s premier Xbox Live Gold has waned in popularity for the past few years, likely due to a lack of compelling free games to download. Now, Xbox is ending Xbox Live Gold on September 14 and replacing it with Xbox Game Pass Core. This new subscription tier of Xbox Game Pass will cost $9.99 per month, or $59.99 a year, and serves as an evolution of Xbox Live Gold, according to the company.

Gundam Evolution Is Shutting Down In November
Tumblr media
Gundam Evolution, the competitive multiplayer title set within the popular Gundam universe, is shutting down.
Despite launching less than a year ago in September 2022, executive producer Kazuya Maruyama shared in a blog post that support for the game will be winding down, though he doesn't provide any specifics as to why.
“We wanted to create a title that brought FPS fans and Gundam fans together," Maruyama writes. "We challenged ourselves to create an authentic Gundam FPS game that could be played globally. Unfortunately, we have determined that it is no longer possible for us to provide a service that satisfies our players.”

Nintendo Land should have been bundled with the Wii U like Wii Sports was with the Wii. Nintendo also should have used the inevitable failure of the Wii U as an excuse to experiment kinda like what they did with Gamecube. Do you think anything could have saved the U?
Was it not? I would not have bought Nintendo Land without it being bundled on the Wii U, so I'm pretty sure it was a bundle game? If it wasn't then I guess it goes to show you how dire the Nintendo Land launch was. Because I just must have wanted a new game to play on my new console. But all I had was New Super Mario Bros U and Nintendo Land.
As for things that could have saved the Wii U....
I genuinely feel like with the larger general audiences, it was irredeemable. There is no saving it. It was always only going to appeal to Nintendo fans.
It's gimmick just had very limited appeal. What good does it do anybody? Allow the kids to play video games while the family TV is in use? That's what dedicated handhelds are for so what's the point? It's just causing the electric bill to go up when the 3DS can do the job.
And it was too underpowered for third party developers to work with. General audiences might like Mario and Pokemon but they need more than just first party Nintendo games. Wii U needed third party support.
And the launch lineup sucked... New Super Mario Bros and Nintendo Land... then it was what, a three month wait for Pikmin 3, and sadly, Pikmin 3 is a niche franchise that general audiences don't care about.
Wii U just didn't have a chance.
Maybe if they had pokemon, I don't like pokemon much these days, but I do know how much it sells.... but that's still a pipe dream. The Pokemon company does not take chances. They still made Pokemon Black and White for the DS when the 3DS was on the way. They were not going to make a Pokemon game for a failing Nintendo console when their handheld finally started selling huge numbers, even though the crazy fanbase would probably buy like 2 Wii Us each so they could trade shiny starters with themselves or whatever.... and they made Sun and Moon for 3DS even though the Switch was coming. The Pokemon Company does not have Nintendo's back.
