Practice 1 - Developing Skills

Introduction

Hi, I’m Abhinav Rshikesan Nair, an automotive enthusiast & an environment artist from Kerala, India. As I'm pursuing my master’s in Games Art & Design from the University Of Hertfordshire, I have to do some projects based on 3D. I'll be sharing more details about those projects through this Blog post.

Development Project - 01

This was the first final project on semester - A. To do this project i chose one of the weekly project titled Light & Shadow.

Idea

I thought of many ideas and as it’s my first final project i have decided to create one scenery in unreal using my limited knowledge. As i was interested in Automotive visualization, i thought to create a garrage.

References

I refered some pics which was available in google images for the concept.

Process

I started my process by modeling the building in Blender 3.6.

I made a plane mesh and extruded it's 4 sides upward to make it look like a room. And then made a upper birth platform and stairs resizing cubes, also handrails.

I have then added a roof to made it look more realistic.

And after that i exported this model from Blender 3.6 to Unreal Engine 5.3.2 as FBx format and textured it with adding materials collected from 'Quixel Bridge'

To make it look like much more realistic, I added some properties which was available inside 'Quixel Bridge' and added a rectangular light.

After that, I thought, placing a car which i have modelled will make it look like a garrage.

So i recreated Nissan GT R34 in Blender using it's blue prints.

This model is later imported into unreal and placed with in the scene of garrage. And the final output was not so perfect as the car texture was not so good.

Development Project - 02

I'll be sharing my second final project for Semestar - A. For this project we can choose any previous assignment done for weekly project. So i chose the project done for the topic 'Places of Mind' for developing.

Idea

I have thought of creating a environment with a water body & an historical remaining of a building near to it.

Process

I have started with creating a landscape by sculpting the irregularities of ground.

Then created a customised water body with the help of water plugin which was available in unreal itself.

And to make the landscape look real I added some grass and trees to ground using foliage mode and with the help of procedural foliage spawner.

After that, I added some natural properties and created an imaginative historical building remaing with the help 'Quixel Bridge'

And to make it look more realistic i made some adjustments in 'Exponential Height Fog' and got my final output.

Sony has released a new GT7 update 1.35 on PS4 and PS5(Version 1.350.000) players. According to the official GT7 1.35 patch notes, the latest GT7 June 2023 update introduces new cars, events, features, and improvements, including new cars like the Aston Martin Valkyrie '21 and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III GSR '95, new events in World Circuits and Music Rally. Apart from this, GT7 patch 1.35 (1.350) also made adjustments to gameplay elements, and various bug fixes and improvements. Previously, a major GT7 update 1.23 added 3 new cars and new Scapes. Volkswagen ID. R '19, Nissan Silvia K's Type S(S14) '94 and Porsche Vision Gran Turismo Spyder are now available in-game. Recently, GT7 patch 1.32 added new cars and fixes. Unfortunately, players are still experiencing a number of issues with the game. Today's GT7 version 1.35 will address a few of these issues. Read more details below. That Time Forgot: Chrysler Thunderbolt

I have a thing for old concept cars and castings Hot Wheels appears to have forgotten about over the years. So, why not combine them into a single segment? Our first installment of this segment talks about the Chrysler Thunderbolt, Chrysler’s halo car design for the 1990s that never came to be. I got the idea for this from a Motor1 segment that runs every so now and then known as “Concept We Forgot”, so might as well credit it now before we get on with it.

The Thunderbolt was a front-mid-engined concept car designed in 1993 by GM designer Tom Gale, intended to be Chrysler’s halo car. According to Neil Walling, Chrysler's director of advanced and international design at the time, DaimlerChrysler had a program where they wanted to do a car that would be the epitome of each of their marques; these marques were Plymouth, Dodge, Jeep, and of course, Chrysler. The cars that came out of this design program were the Plymouth Prowler, Jeep Ecco, Dodge Viper and the Chrysler Thunderbolt.

First presented at the 1993 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Thunderbolt stole the show at the DaimlerChrysler booth. The Thunderbolt was also fully functional; it was based on a lengthened LH platform that was used in the Concorde, Intrepid and 300M and was powered by an experimental 4.0L 32-valve V8 designed by Chrysler’s engineering chief at the time, François Castaing. The engine generated 270 BHP and was essentially a more advanced version of the engine found in the Eagle Optima. The transmission was a four-speed automatic, and ABS, four-wheel disc brakes and traction control were standard.

The car was hand-built by a company known as Metalcrafters, which took the car from a one-fifth scale model built by Chrysler to reality within a span of eight months. The car was built of real steel and glass, with no plastic or fiberglass to be found. The engine was stuffed in the front; one half of the engine was in the actual hood secton, with the other half under the dashboard, making this a front-mid-engined car. The lines of the Thunderbolt were made to be somewhat reminiscent of the original 1941 Thunderbolt concept, which this concept recycled the name of.

The interior for the Thunderbolt was highly advanced for the time, featuring power seats and enough legroom at the rear to comfortably seat four. An on-board infotainment system was also provided, including satellite navigation and a computer with video games. The cab forward design of the Thunderbolt helps to add to the legroom as well. At the rear, the car’s distinctive double bubble canopy also showed.

After being presented at the NAIAS in 1993, the car may have gone on to be displayed at a number of auto shows, before finding its permanent residence at the Walter P. Chrysler Museum; with the closure of the museum in 2016, however, the Thunderbolt was subsequently moved into storage, and its current location remains unknown.

Now, about the casting. The small-scale Thunderbolt was designed by a man you may have heard of: Mark Jones. Jones originally joined Mattel in 1986 but began designing Hot Wheels around 1993; some of the castings he designed include the following:

• Bugatti Veyron (2003 First Editions, 2003 – 2010) • Corvette SR-2 (2002 First Editions, 2001 – 2012) • Enzo Ferrari (2003 First Editions, 2003 – 2014) • Ferrari 250 LM (2007 First Editions, 2007 – 2009) • Flathead Fury (2005 Acceleracers: Metal Maniacs, 2005 – 2016) • Ground FX (2003 First Editions, 2003 – Present) • Hyper Mite (2001 First Editions, 2001 – 2013) • Mazda 787B (2018 Car Culture: Circuit Legends, 2018 – Present) • Nissan Silvia (S15) (2018 HW Entertainment: Forza Motorsport, 2018 – Present) • Pipe Jammer (1993 First Editions, 1993 – 1996) • Prototipo Alfa Romeo B.A.T. 9 (2006 First Editions: Realistix, 2006 only) • Volkswagen Käfer Racer (2017 New Models: HW Speed Graphics, 2017 – Present)

Jones left the Hot Wheels design team circa 2005 to go to Matchbox’s design team to design cars for the Real Working Rigs and SkyBusters lines, only to return to Hot Wheels in 2014, where he currently designs for the mainline and Premium lines.

This small scale replica of the Thunderbolt was introduced in 1998, alongside thirty-nine other models, such as the ‘65 Impala, Tow Jam, Customized C3500, Mustang Mach 1 and the Dairy Delivery. It was introduced in a silver paintscheme replicating that of the real Thunderbolt, with purple windows. From my examination, the Thunderbolt’s sloping roof section is plastic and appears to be snapped onto the windows. The rear of the double bubble canopy features the Hot Wheels logo cast in.

Sometime between 1999 and 2001, the base was changed, now featuring copyright information pertaining to the Dodge Car Company; it appears that it was around the ‘00s where copyright or trademark information pertaining to a car manufactured by a certain few manufacturers had to be added to the bottom of the base was mandated (i.e. “TM GM”, “DCC” or “Chrysler Group LLC”).

The casting received a total of eight releases, with the last release of this casting being in 2003 under the Highway 35: World Race series under the Wave Rippers team. Under its Wave Rippers guise, the car was given a number of embellishments in terms of specifications and performance figures; the cartoon version produces 670 BHP from an experimental V10 mated to conceal worm-drive propellers.

This casting has not been seen since its Wave Rippers release, although it was never officially retired under the Final Run Series (which has been on hiatus since 2006). It’s likely that this casting has been quietly retired, and will most likely never be seen again.

Now, I’m a big fan of the Thunderbolt, with its absolutely unique styling, but this was not easy to write about since the history of the Thunderbolt is so scattered. However, I hope this helps to provide the viewer with at least some history of the Thunderbolt, with all the various sources I could string up over the web.

London to Lundy Part 1

5 months sounds like a long time, but when you’ve started a new job in a completely different industry, it flies by. New colleagues, new commute, new schedule, new maze-like museum building that took at least a month to get used to. Even new vocabulary.

I felt like I was desperately treading water, slowly drowning in a sea of to-dos. It finally took the Christmas period, when the museum was closed, most colleagues and external contacts had taken holidays and my telephone and inbox fell quiet, that I had a moment to realise... I have 13 days of annual leave to use up before the end of the financial year.

My husband’s birthday is in March, so I thought we could go somewhere together to celebrate, as we had been doing the last few years. The thing is, my husband works in a small company, a team of 3, in fact. Unfortunately, the other 2 also have their birthdays in March, so, being the most junior, he felt he couldn’t take a week off, especially because they were planning a work trip around that time too.

First off, the nearest train station is 25 miles away, and you need to get on a bus for an hour even to get close to the helipad. Not only that but you had to get there by 10am latest, so unless you wanted to leave London at crazy o’clock, you had to arrive the night before and find accommodation. On top of that, on the way back, you have no idea what time your helicopter flight is. “Sometime between 11 and 3pm, and it depends on the weather, you could be delayed to later in the afternoon or even the next day!” So booking a train for the way back was a gamble. Driving to Devon in my electric car started to look like a more attractive, at least simpler, concept.

I’m not what you call a confident driver, and some past long distance drives had been very stressful. It’s hard for me to forget that I could kill myself or anyone else by making a silly mistake. And I make plenty of those in my everyday life. What if I don’t plan well and I run out of charge on my car? The prospect of driving alone, for four hours, which would probably include at least 4 charges, was terrifying. Also, if I want to arrive at the heliport at 9:30am, then I would need to leave at 5:30am, but add on 4 x 30 minute charges is 3:30am, and maybe I should add an extra hour in case I take the wrong turning or there is traffic or a diversion... well that’s crazy o’clock. So I decided to break up the journey by stopping off at my uncle’s in Bristol.

Some chargers require you to start the charge using your mobile phone... but what if you didn’t have enough reception? I drove my husband crazy with my fretting and stressing. I made sure I had enough car snacks and a good playlist.

Then the day finally came. I left for Bristol around 9.00am. It was a bright sunny day and I left in high spirits, onto the M4. Forty minutes later, dirty black clouds appear and it starts to properly pour. The roads were not too busy but there was a ropey 15 minutes of very poor visibility, the spray from the other cars and lorries obscuring the road like a thick fog. My heart pumping, I was very glad to arrive at my first charge stop at a service station just after 10am.

There, I struck up a conversation with a fellow Nissan Leaf driver, and I asked him if he’d heard the rumour that you shouldn’t charge your car up to 100% on one of the rapid chargers (there are a few different charge speeds, you see).
