Hi, I'm sorry, I know it's been a long time but I found an old post of yours where you say that the mangaka of Gakuen Alice said that Natsume and Mikan relationship is not safe or comfortable, did they really say that? I had no idea. What else has the author said about their relationship? I'm curious (⁠ㆁ⁠ω⁠ㆁ⁠)

And that would be from the Memorial Book, where, according to some fan translations I've seen here and otherwise online (because there is no official English translation), Higuchi Tachibana said something along the lines of Natsume not getting too comfortable or sure of himself or thinking he "won." Essentially she's implying Ruka and Hotaru still have a shot with Mikan because she might change her mind about Natsume so he shouldn't get cocky or some other bullcrap like that.

I feel like it's understandable that I despise that line of thinking so I more or less ignore the Memorial Book and everything about the ending in general (excluding the Little Red Riding Hood comic and the HotaRuka crumbs). I've talked at length about why that type of commentary bothers me here. I just generally don't really care much about what the mangaka says anymore. I love her story and I love her art but her personal opinions, even about her own characters, do not matter to me at all.

I'm not sure what else she said in the Memorial Book or otherwise. She mentioned Natsume would have a slightly longer life because of Mikan's alice stone but that he'd still die young, and after that Mikan would probably be with Ruka (if the picture she drew of them together is supposed to be taken as canon). She mentioned somewhere (I don't recall where) that Natsume wasn't planned to be the "victor" but he just emerged in the lead at some point and she went along with it, which I always took to be a bit ridiculous because SHE WROTE THIS STORY. The characters lead you places but if she really preferred Ruka as the one Mikan ended up with then she should have written that from the beginning and IMHO, it was always Natsume from the start so no I don't buy that.

I realllyyyyyy don't like being negative about GA so I usually don't think about the canon ending, Memorial Book, or Higuchi Tachibana much. I love this manga with my whole heart and always will, but I really don't like it when creators rag on something fans love just to be edgy or contrary or whatnot. It makes me feel like they don't respect me for liking something THEY made, and if they don't respect me then I don't really wanna respect them. I feel similarly about actors shitting on past projects I like, but this one takes the cake in making me feel Not Great because of how much I love GA and NatsuMikan. It's just a huge slap in the face and always was, since the first time I read that comment of hers.

Since then, neither the canon ending nor the Memorial Book have existed to me.

Death of the author applies to lots of works but to me it has always applied to GA and always will!

TW: Kidnapping and involuntary servitude. Dehumanization, both of Killer and Murder (who is dehumanized by both Nightmare and Killer, despite how Killer isn’t aware of/doesn’t much care how he comes off, even if that’s not the intention.)

Hunting, predator/unwilling prey dynamics that is encouraged. Pet/master as well.

Also past hints to previous hunts, starvation as punishment, abuse.

Was thinking about how canon Murder was said to never want to willingly join Nightmare and wouldn’t have any interest in other AUs or ATs outside of his own, and I was thinking about how there’s a canonical Something New timeline where Nightmare just straight up yoinked up Killer and took him into involuntary servitude.

And then I was thinking about these two facts with a Bad Sans Gang AU, and my first thought was “flight risk Murder” and predator/prey dynamics with Murder and Killer (they’re both prey and predator bc Murder is very good at setting traps) and owner/pet dynamics with Nightmare and Killer.

Like, NM is old and ancient and spent some time away from most mortals for quite awhile and Killer didn’t really fight back or attempt to escape him as he yoinked him up, so he assumes it’ll just be the same with Murder.

Only, nope. First mission out and the guy’s making an immediate run for it. Killer has to track him down and drag him back, which presented a surprisingly good challenge because this guy is fast and light on his feet and good at thinking quickly (like Killer). He set up so many various traps or made impromptu ones, he kept Killer on his toes.

This becomes a bit of a routine (no one uses that word around Stage 2 Killer, because then it becomes something to avoid).

Nightmare sends them out, Murder tries to run if he has the energy and Determination, Killer hunts him down with something bordering on amusement and glee.

He’s never hunted another version of himself down quite like this before, and unsurprisingly this leads to moments of squabbling and vicious fighting between Murder and Killer who gets closer and closer to Stage 3 with every hunt. He’s having fun, falling into habit, the thrill of the chase.

They always both come back bloody, beaten, injured, and exhausted, Killer either carrying Murder bridal style or by the scruff of his hoodie, but Killer is uncharacteristically pleased and almost happy to be hunting someone down. (“You fell back into form easy enough, huh. Just like old times, right, partner?”)

Murder is always beyond exhausted and pissed, something bordering on realizing how powerless he actually is when compared to Nightmare (worried he might not ever be able to stop his human because he’ll never get free), and Nightmare is just…endlessly amused.

It’s like watching the cat drag in a mouse to its owner, so he will of course give Killer his well deserved praise and treats. This new behavior is something he hadn’t observed in his weapon yet, and he is admittedly curious.

You’re allowed to rest more today, eat more today. Just make sure to take care of Murder, have him up and ready for the next time. (This is what you’re supposed to do with mortals you don’t want dying on you just yet, right? It seems so tedious..maybe just this one time, just to see what happens.)

Feeling Murder’s anger at Killer, his disgust and discomfort around him (Murder’s embarrassment and humiliation at being wrangled and treated like a pet, even though Killer always takes care of his injuries well just like he does for the cats he adores so much), is like a nice side dish for Nightmare. He can feel Murder’s slowly, ever slowly, dwindling hope; and he assumes it’ll eventually be just like Killer.

That Murder will accept his place, and then will make the best of it, and they’ll all move on from this. Or maybe they’ll keep going but now both his pets will enjoy playing out in the woods or something.

But, no. Murder’s escape attempts begin losing its previous zeal. He’s just doing it because it’s habit now, and not because he thinks he’ll actually get free this time. He causally wanders off, and he spots Killer leaning against a tree like, “so..you come here often?”

He immediately turns around and goes back.

Killer is getting bored and apathetic again, Nightmare can tell. The tingle of “something new” has worn off, Murder is no longer novel. He’s boring and lame now.

But Killer knows he isn’t broken yet. Murder isn’t like him, he can see the spark of defiance and life in those dim eyes. It’s so different from what Killer sees when he dares to catch a glimpse of the reflection in the blade of his knife.

If Murder isn’t broken yet, then he’s just biding time. And Killer can’t wait to see what he does next.

(Who knows. Maybe Killer even does things to attempt to keep Murder’s hope up. Because he wouldn’t be fun if he were just like Killer.) (He doesn’t want anyone becoming like him)

(..of course things would get difficult if Killer starts thinking that Murder could genuinely start escaping him. Hunting someone down brings back memories, feelings, consequences of failure..

Stage 3 will not let this prey get away because no prey means no food means more pain means upset-angry-stomach-body. Pain to stomach and pain to head and pain to bones and soul and disappointment means becoming prey.)

(..eventually, though, it all comes to a head. Maybe Killer finally triggered into Stage 3 and kills Murder in the fight, before it can bring in the prey for observation, proof of having done well.

And maybe this is how Nightmare becomes aware of Stage 3, and is..deeply intrigued about this new side of his weapon. Perhaps this explains why Killer had been behaving oddly, outside of the thrill of something new. Perhaps this wasn’t as new for his killer as Nightmare had thought it was.

The next one they get will be more willing, somehow, someway. “I will get you another friend to play with,” he reassures his killer.)

It’s such a weird feeling, loving Vax so much but also being unsure if you want him to actually come back.

Mostly because, narratively, it wouldn’t make sense beyond “we (the cast/the audience) just want it really bad”. Would the Matron really undo him being DISINTEGRATED? And I can’t see him coming out okay if RQ get eaten or whatever.

A big part of Vax’s arc and the themes of it was “accepting what’s out of your control” and understanding that death is a part of life. Would it really be okay to flip that on its head? To say “actually, fuck that nm.”

I feel like after Kingsley, the audience has a hard time accepting death. If FCG hadn’t literally blown themself up, people would have been (and some probably still are) rallying for him to come back.

I dunno. I just don’t want that final scene in C1 to get cheapened, or for CR to become like superhero comics where no one ever stays dead.

Whatever ends up happening, I’ll respect, but I don’t want it to happen because people just wanted it really badly.

Have a general summary of how I characterize the bad sanses!

Nightmare: Immortal being that does horrible things with little reason but to survive. He's been around for thousands of years now and he feels like his empathy meter is a little broken, which is ironic for an empath. He's just a person though, a lonely one. He collects the boys in a hope to cure his loneliness, caring for them to keep them sated. Somewhere along the way he realizes that empathy he thought was gone, is always there for them. He cares. He loves. (And he hates puns)

Killer: hardcore unstable for a long time. He's actually greyace, but probably has a personality disorder with a side of ADHD, resulting in manic highs with a lot of hypersexuality and flirtiness and severe depressive episodes where he feels little to nothing, eats little to nothing, and hardly leaves his bed. (I've written a little oneshot about that before) Nightmare helps him get the right care and gives him a support system in which he can thrive, and the mania becomes less severe, and the worse depressive episodes become few and far between. (He loves a good pun but prefers to make dark jokes more than anything else)

Dust: High key schizophrenic and has serious C-PTSD. LV causes overactive magic which causes chronic pain and irritability. He's grumpy and quiet, with the classic traits like an affinity for puns and bad humor, but after a while with the boys and NM, and learning how to manage the symptoms of his psychological and physical problems, he becomes a lot more talkative and less brash.

Horror: A caretaker and provider above all else. He does bad things strictly for the benefit of those he cares about. Serious food security problems, serious PTSD, a lot of physical health problems resulting from malnutrition, and his head injury. He's blunt but kind. He still cracks up over a good (or bad) joke. He doesn't get defensive over his food, but he will over others'. Least to say, there is absolutely NO playfully stealing food off other's plates at the table once he joins the team. Nightmare nurtures his physical health, makes the kitchen homely, and the pantry and fridge forever full to help his food security problems. He teaches Horror to cook and allows him to oversee the majority of the team's nutrition. It helps him see that he is still capable of caring for the people he loves, and that what happened in his AU was no fault of his.

Cross: Strong and commanding. Organized, orderly, and strictly disciplined. He was made to serve. He's also traumatized beyond words and freaks out whenever he's unable to be orderly enough, and all authority scares the shit out of him. He loathes puns. Nightmare makes authority about rewards and kindness rather than punishment, and provides him with the space and support to deconstruct his ideas about order, organization, and strictness. Cross learns to think for himself and question authority in a healthy way, he learns that he's more than a tool/soldier and he's allowed to have a personal life, love, joy, peace, reprive... he gets to be at peace now.

So with Oppenheimer coming out tomorrow, I feel a certain level of responsibility to share some important resources for people to understand more about the context of the Manhattan Project. Because for my family, it’s not just a piece of history but an ongoing struggle that’s colonized and irradiated generations of New Mexicans’ lives and altered our identity forever. Not only has the legacy of the Manhattan Project continued to harm and displace Indigenous and Hispanic people but it’s only getting bigger: Biden recently tasked the Los Alamos National Lab facility to create 30 more plutonium pits (the core of a nuclear warhead) by 2026. So this is a list of articles, podcasts and books to check out to hear the real stories of the local people living with this unique legacy that’s often overlooked. 

This is simply the latest mainstream interest in the Oppenheimer story and it always ALWAYS silences the trauma of the brown people the US government took advantage of to make their death star. I might see the movie, I honestly might not. I’m not trying to judge anyone for seeing what I’m sure will be an entertaining piece of art. I just want y’all to leave the theater knowing that this story goes beyond what’s on the screen and touches real people’s lives: people whose whole families died of multiple cancers from radiation from the Trinity test, people who’s ancestral lands were poisoned, people who never came back from their job because of deadly work conditions. This is our story too.

One often ignored side of the Manhattan Project story that’s personal for me is that the government illegally seized the land that the lab facilities eventually were built on. Before 1942, it was homesteading land for ranchers for more than 30 families (my grandpa’s side of the family was one). But when the location was decided, the government evicted the residents, bought their land for peanuts and used their cattle for target practice. Descendants of the homesteaders later sued and eventually did get compensated for their treatment (though many say it was far below what they were owed)

Myrriah Gomez is an incredible scholar in this field, working as a historian, cultural anthropologist and activist using a framework of “nuclear colonialism” to foreground the Manhattan Project. Her book Nuclear Nuevo Mexico is an amazing collection of oral stories and archival record that positions New Mexico’s era of nuclear colonialism in the context of its Spanish and American eras of colonialism. A must read for anyone who’s made it this far.

There isn’t a ton of podcasts about this (yet 👀) but recently the Washington Post’s podcast Field Trip did an episode about White Sands National Monument. The story is a beautifully written and sound designed piece that spotlights the Downwinder activists and also a discovery of Indigenous living in the Trinity test area going back thousands of years. I was blown away by it.

I came across your "You have this hold over me" piece and it made me stop and share it with a friend of mine outside of tumblr because I was so striken with feelings about it. I started off my message to them with "Oh, I feel Some Kind Of Way about this art piece" before we both started talking about it in depth. We went into how it came across as tender but heavy. How they felt like realistic depictions of people that don't get seen very often in the public image, how it's decidedly Southern by background choices and colors and way of dress, how it feels like being covert about desires publicly and thus stealing a moment between the two in the piece. How if separated and standing next to each other there wouldn't be a visual cue to mark them differently from a heterosexual man from the south. How it just felt so quietly reverent, it just resonated with both of us for different reasons. I finally went to see if you offered prints, because it made me feel so strongly that I wanted to see if I could get it for my own home. That's when I saw your other pieces and I went 'Oh, all their art is like that' as I was already a little weepy about the first piece. I don't really know why I felt so compelled to reach out to you beyond thanking you for sharing such wonderful pieces. Thank you for telling such stories with your art, I can feel the love and meaning put into them. I hope you have a wonderfully peaceful day, much love and joy sent your way from me and mine who will cherish your art for the rest of our lives.

Thank you sincerely for sharing this with me/us. Last night I held a small social hour at my studio. A way to try to bring our local Albuquerque NM community together. I feel pretty helpless with all that is going on right now in the United States. I just wanted to provide a space for people to expand their circles, talk and exchange resources. But from that and many of the discussions I was reminded that I’m doing a lot for folks just by sharing relatable images of queer people in love and in joy. It’s what I set out to do from the beginning of this series of works. These stories, like your own, make it all so worth it as the good far outweighs in the bad in the long run.
