I would certainly like to hear more about your Link headcanons if you are willing to share!
unsure if this is what u wanted when u asked this anon but I’m using this as an excuse to talk abt my lu accent/voice headcanons (which also apply to their non-lu game counterparts in my brain when applicable). I have more for some than others sorry
Wild:
prefers generally not to speak and sign instead. BUT
intensely Scottish-adjacent Accent Wild is a great love of mine
in my brain he is actually incredibly soft spoken tho. his voice is rlly light and soft and on the higher side. he’s a tenor when he sings lol
like. he’s chaotic he’s just not loud abt it. the juxtaposition between what he says and how he says it is half the humor
often trails off sentences without finishing a thought. blanks out on words sometimes, but also sometimes remembers obscure idioms and slang from 100 years ago that have fallen out of use in his current hyrule
I feel like he has this kind of flat, meandering intonation. how do I describe this. u know this animatic that jojo made once. that’s rlly how I imagine wild speaking besides the accent lol
Time:
I like imagining him with an accent I can only describe as Gently Irish
like it’s the Kokiri accent he had as a child and it’s faded over time. No one else on his hyrule has quite the same accent
a deep voice link but Not the deepest. he’s like 3rd
also very soft spoken but he speaks with such gravity he commands attention anyway.
he rarely raises his voice but when he does. by god u done fucked up
not quite relevant to this post but LOUDEST DAD SNEEZES EVER. it’s like a GUNSHOT. and he acts like nothing happened
Twilight:
I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again. extreme southern twilight. country boy. y’all’d’ve, yeehaw, howdy, and the like. It’s more of a texas twang than a Deep South drawl tho
includes all the phrasing idiosyncrasies that come with that
2nd deepest link voice
uses a lot of ordonian slang no one understands. there's a lot of about goats.
his voice and the way he speaks is really Warm
not afraid to Yell. in fact he will. he’s hollering right now
very rich singing voice. hums a lot
Warriors:
extremely posh british accent.
I actually don’t think he’s spoken like that all his life, but he worked very hard to train himself to speak this way
he is smack dab in the middle of the chains high and low voice scale
also a member of the Extremely Commanding Voice crowd. don’t make him use his captain voice
Legend:
idk I imagine him with a general American accent with a bit of a nasal quality to it.
I also like the idea of him with a HEAVY Yorkshire accent but I lean towards the first
Another tenor
there’s a really piercing quality abt his voice and the way he speaks
extremely dry, sardonic tone
always kind of sounds like he’s annoyed
absolutely allergic to sounding sincere. often sounds like he’s being sarcastic even when he’s not. The verbal equivalent of resting bitch face
LOUD
bonus Ravio: He has a Jersey accent. a strong one. I don’t make the rules. that’s the accent in lorule. fight me about it.
Hyrule:
I’ve seen ppl headcanon him with Jason Ritter's performance as Dipper Pines and like. yes. YES.
since legend is his direct predecessor I imagine him w the same accent, but he has this kind of strange musical, dream-like quality to the way he speaks. something is just a little off
sounds like a sweet boy
always sounds just a little bit exhausted
is terrifying when he raises his voice. like bro ur triple fucked.
Wind
i also just kind of imagine him w a general American accent but I like the idea he tricks them all into thinking he actually speaks like a pirate for like the first two weeks of being in the chain
no volume control
run on sentences galore
curses too many times in a sentence just because
Sky:
stick with me here. I tend to imagine him with the accent that Swedish people have when they speak English. don’t ask me why. but like a light accent just kind of that quality to the vowels
actual deepest voice link
he’s on the quiet and soft spoken side but can get surprisingly loud under the right circumstances, especially when he’s angry or excited
makes a lot of?? sound effect noises in his daily life?? like when he does actions he’ll make a little sound effect to go with it??
also guilty of using obscure skyloft idioms no one understands. he does it more than anyone else
talks in his sleep and he always sounds so urgent and it's terrifying bc when does sky ever sound that urgent
Four:
either a general American or English accent?? I am not sure yet
I love the idea tho that each color has a slightly different manner of speaking, and that if ur paying attention you can tell who’s piloting the plane in that moment
like that blue is more assertive and curses more, vio is dry, somewhat snippy, and uses a lot of big words, red speaks really fast and uses a lot of flowery language, and green speaks simply and straightforwardly. Four can be any of these things at once
this is too long anyway as always subject to change whenever i feel like it lol I spend a lot of time thinking abt this. also when I reference specific accents what I really mean is, The Hylian Equivalent Of An Accent That Sounds Like This

how did you get into editing pmd models? you're super good at them, and i'm considering taking it up. i was wondering, how/where did you pick it up?
oh boi oh geez where do i even begin omg (long post so i chucked the rest under the cut)
first thank you for your compliment hehe i really appreciate that!! but hmmm well- i started editing pmd/pmx models like aaaaaages ago i dont even remember much but generally for most beginners, lots of people tend to recolour (i mean i did it too when i first started hehe shout out to my zatsune model edit of animasa miku phew gud ol’ days) which is totally okay especially if you’re just figuring out how like colours/textures work and the whole material panel/subsets/i’m saying-weird-terminology-that-you-probably-don’t-get-yet pretty much all the tools and what they do that’s totally okay hehe once you poke around it for a while, you’ll get use to which tool does what and that’s all gud (i recommend getting the english translated version of PMDeditor (or PMX- i use PMX) because that’ll save you a lot of time (i use the japanese version because i’m weird and dumb and i’m still trying to figure stuff out myself to this day)
after that phase of recolouring (normally i wouldn’t recommend staying in this for long like, i recoloured 1 model and moved on straight away HAHA) at this point one of the most common and main styles of editing for starters is taking editable (or ‘legal’) parts from other models that allow editing (make sure stuff is editable before you do anything or you could get in trouble), and then piecing it together to form your own cool new model edit yeyeye, there should be plenty of tutorials how to do this and how to avoid glitches with joints/physics/bones and stuff so if you want, just hmu privately and i can quest for some for you, but it shouldn’t be too difficult to find!!
usually lots of people generally stay in that area of editing which is totally chill as well, with practice and constant improvement you could like reach some good levels of work from just part-editing itself, ive seen it happen many many times!!
otherwise the other option you could go down is what i generally do nowadays for editing- and that’s i guess, ‘modelling parts’ (which is what most people call it) or ‘meta-editing’- it involves pretty much, chucking a base into an external 3D program to build clothes/your own parts and then re-rig it entierly again in PMXeditor (i’m a lil tired asf but i have a tutorial tab on my tumblr page where i go more in depth on this and where to start if this is what you wanna do) thoUGH keep in mind, it’s probably best you get use to using PMX and all the terminolgy and such before anything or else it’ll be like what whAT WHat
personally i think that this ‘meta-editing’ method is almost the more easier and safer route, though when you’re starting out it’s like ‘MmMM shit’ but trust me it’s…. imo it’s easier than part-editing (because i used to do that too) mostly because 1. you just make your shit rather than find it (sometimes some parts aren’t even ever made) and 2. you avoid breaking rules completely because heck ur doing it 100% urself wat are rules (aside from obviously your base model’s rules haha)
i forgot what else i wanted to say um
oh yeah well- this is like the basic of the basic explanations, i need you to be more specific if you want me to teach you stuff but the least i can do now is give you a brief overview?? but das it ehe
otherwise some tips i’d like to mention as well which have nothing to do with the actual practice, are as follows:
#1 tip: that i donnn’t think i’ve ever preached on this blog before but i might as well start bc it’s important!!! try ur best to remain humble/modest watever- honestly i think….. if you start thinking you’re some God level editor or watever that’s when…… improvement kinda halts……. so even though it might be kinda ehhh, be a little harsh on yourself- you’re your own critic and it’s better to recognise your faults before someone else points them out for you (because that can hurt heaps, but i mean if u hate urself first nobody else can amirITE AMIRITE i’m kidding don’t hate urself)
i, for one am always very horrible to myself with my edits- like i dislike a looot of them which is actually kinda terrible LMAOO so i don’t recommend like hating everything you do because that ruins the fun- and sometimes it might even push you to stop entirely (i’ve known friends that have quit because they couldn’t get it right etc.) as long as you realise that whatever you do currently isn’t going to be as great as what you do later in life, then you’re like guranteed to improve no doubt about it- in a way, you’re not putting any limitations on yourself so you can grow from that! just continue to persevere, some people don’t improve until a looot later and some people improve like within weeks- so don’t let that get to you either!!! i’ve been doing this shit for like ages and i still am not as good as like actual modellers because i’ve just…. been too comfortable and improved only as an editor askdajsk
#2 tip: do not compare yourself to others especially when you’re first starting out- i’ve had…… quite a number of people compare themselves to me which is….. to say the least……. quite uncomfortable for the person you’re comparing yourself to??? because you gotta keep in mind how long people have been doing stuff (like this is my 6th year and literally everyday i’ve opened up PMX or metasequoia and i’ve toyed around for at least an hour) and idk just try not to compare yourself- because i know it’s kinda difficult not to but trust me, try to walk your own path you can create your own shit without necassarily comparing- unless you’re comparing to improve yourself whiiich leads me to my #3 tip
#3 tip: do not be afraid to mimic styles or toy with styles, i mean do not claim a certain style as your own that’s a HUGE nono, but it doesn’t hurt to like attempt to mimic someone who you look up to, and their style in order to help you improve and find your own style!! i personally mimic artists (rather than MMDers/editors) when i do my edits and then i started to develop my own kinda style??? like i still do a lot of imitation ‘edits’ which are those anime edits you see every now and again (like my yoi models or my binan models) and that’s fine!!! i think the most improvement i’ve ever had in terms of face-editing and stuff have come from me trying to imitate art of others (instead of just blindly going for my own style from the getgo) and this goes for drawing too!!! hell i still ‘mimic’ styles whenever i do any edits that have already an art design for?? i like accuracy first and then i play my style into it later and that’s totally cool too!! as long as you correctly credit and don’t claim as your own, you can’t really go much wrong (unless the person is like hey? can u pls stop? then ya don’t HAHA) i once had an incident back when i was a baby editor where i,,,,,,, kind of recreated someone else’s style of model edit line into like a different model style (in this case it was LAT so that’s how long ago it was) and then redistributed without their prior permission and ya that was bad don’t do that HAHA
and ya that should be it, i wrote this like 60 years ago and it’s been sitting in my drafts and i totally forgot about it until today so i hope that helps ya out!!

The Great Ace Attorney Replay: Apollo Justice, Case 4 Part 1
Dramatic stuff happened in Ace Attorney and now I'm seven years before the game is set playing as Phoenix in the trial where he got disbarred. It's nice and familiar to be him again even if I know I'm destined to lose.
"They say the new prosecutor is the best ever but there's like one of those every year" haha that's true. Phoenix is so jaded but so correct. Literally every prosecutor introduced in each new game is supposed to be the best prosecutor ever.
u know if Maya was here I am positive this whole thing would have been avoided
she would have been like "Nick maybe lets not assume evidence some random child hands us is real"
or "Nick it's sort of fishy our client is telling us it will be impossible to declare a verdict. like that's kinda weird"
THIS IS WHY MAYA SHOULD NEVER LEAVE.
awww i forgot we got to see Gumshoe in this flashback. i missed u. where have u gone.
"Today's the day, pal! I'm gonna win and you're gonna lose!" Well. he's not wrong.
they even switched back to the music from last game for this trial. so retro.
I have to show this evidence even though I know it's fake. but the most amazing thing is they give you a option NOT to show the evidence...and you can click it...then Phoenix shows it anyway. OKAY THEN.
i'm gonna show them my attorney's badge instead of this fake evidence
shockingly this did not work. Phoenix is doomed.
We lost our badge. AND NOW WE'RE IN THE INTERNET. this part is so weird it's like Phoenix is talking directly at the player but if i recall correctly he's actually talking to the jurors. who i guess get to investigate the case using some futuristic technostuff??? who knows.
"And when all the questions have found their answers... ...the final trial will begin. But first, you must chase the truth through then and now. Think of it... as a game." GET IT. SO META.
I'm Phoenix again but i don't have my attorney's badge in the court record anymoooore. NOW WHAT WILL I SHOW PEOPLE. Life has no more meaning.
oh jesus christ it's mike meekins i forgot he was in this part too He doesn't even remember Phoenix? it was literally two years ago. ok. Apparently he's been demoted somehow and is bailiff. Phoenix doesn't care enough to find out what happened.
ok never mind he did ask. he lost his case files three times in four days and they fired him. but he's still wearing his police officers uniform. illegally.
"You know, I think this is the lobby I was in for my very first case. This plant has seen be grow from a rookie, to an ace....to a has-been. I hate you, plant. ...Just kidding." Phoenix. sweetie.I'm sure the plant isn't offended.
"I've seen this painting a bunch of times. I guess I never really looked at it because my head was so stuck in trials. I never had time to stop and appreciate art. I have time now. Ok. Let's appreciate. ....it's pretty lame." PHOENIX. PLEASE. his inner monologue right now is bitter depression central, omg. (this is even more hilarious when you remember he was an art major)
as much as i'm enjoying the Phoenix Wright depression show i should probably go to bed. ttyl!
luci: reading these
i believe in phoenix. maybe he wont lose this time if i believe
Me: ace attorney again. going back to Phoenix's office seven yrs in the past before he just gave up and let it become a complete disaster area.
The whole story with Trucy is just so sad but also really sweet on Phoenix's part. Basically he met her during the trial where he got disbarred because she was his clients daughter. She was also the person who unwittingly gave him the forged evidence- she was like eight and someone else told her to deliver it. But anyway, when Phoenix was framed for forging evidence, her dad just...literally vanished in the middle of court (he was also a magician) and abandoned her with Phoenix.
so now I'm at the office and she's just been staying with Phoenix I guess and he's calling around and finds out she has no living relatives. So he's like "well, you can live with me if you want. Of course if you don't like it we can find somewhere else."
Like how many people would just automatically adopt a random child who was left with them by someone who completely screwed them over. Especially if that child inadvertently cost them their job. But Phoenix doesn't have any resentment about it and realizes she's been abandoned way worse than he has and needs someone and is just like "GUESS I HAVE A CHILD NOW" it's so cute.
Trucy: "So you'll be my family now?"
Phoenix: "Yeah I guess. (This is so weird)."
Trucy: "What should I call you"
Phoenix: Oh. uh. You can call me Nick. I mean, if you ever wanted to, I'm fine with you calling me dad, I mean obviously you don't have to do that right now or anything..."
Trucy: "Okay, daddy!"
Phoenix: Wow, that was quick.
then
Trucy: You got fired from work, right, Daddy? Don't worry, I'll work twice as hard. We'll make it through this.
Phoenix: ...how old are you again, Trucy?
Trucy: I'm eight! But don't let appearances deceive you. I'm a young professional. Stick with me and you'll do just fine, Daddy!
Phoenix: Ah. Thanks. (Why do I feel like she's already in charge?)
I love them so much they're so cute.
luci:*reading scrollback*
that sounds cute
id make a reference to the presige but i didnt understand that movie at all
awww
can phoenix adopt me too
Caitlin: there was actually a case in game 6 that was just like the prestige
he seems to at least unofficially adopt everyone younger than him he meets so there's a good possibility he would if he met you
ok time to examine my office again
"My mentor's favorite plant, Charley. I guess watering Charley's my only real job now. WAIT I HAVE A CHILD NOW. SHE'LL PROBABLY NEED MORE THAN WATERING".
awwww so there's that poster in the office and for the last three games he always says something like "this was Mia's favorite movie. apparently it was the first one that made her cry. I'll have to see it sometime."
but now it's "I finally saw that movie after the longest time the other day. Cried my eyes out. " Of course u did.
"...just remembering it is making me tear up right now. ...maybe I should show it to Trucy when she's older.Wait...what was it called again?" too relatable.
luci:  omg this is too cute
"My desk. Not that I have any reason to sit there anymore. Trucy can use it for her homework I guess... Ack! I'm not crying! Just got dust in my eye!" THIS IS SO SAD. SOMEONE GIVE PHOENIX A HUG. MAYA WHERE ARE YOU.
"I actually don't know much about anything besides law. or even much about law, if you ask some people." omg phoenix. i mean u did literally just admit you never read any of these law books.
luci: ffs phoenix

3 Never-Seen-Before Tactics for Website Conversion Rate Optimization
Outstanding traffic means zilch when those visitors aren’t making the conversion into customers. Sure, content is a necessity, but the end goal is to see these readers act and make a purchase, download a document, or give us their contact information for later use. The only way to accomplish any of this is through proper website conversion rate optimization (CRO), and without it, you can kiss your profits goodbye.
Newsflash: Only 22% of businesses say they are happy with their website conversion rate.
The only way to fix the situation is to start practicing CRO tactics that actually work. The thing is you need to start thinking outside of the box.
Yes, properly optimizing your website landing page with a clear offer, keeping the “important” information above the fold, and implementing strong calls to action (CTAs) can work wonders. However, how much action can you expect from visitors who have seen these same tactics used over and over again?
Today’s consumers know the game that marketers play. So that means to see your desired conversion rates, you need to do one of two things:
Create the utmost amazing product/service that no other person/business in the world can offer.
Or more realistically, start utilizing website conversion rate optimization tactics that often go ignored.
Quick Takeaways
Longer landing pages, when optimized correctly, can generate upwards of 22% more leads than shorter pages that include an above-the-fold CTA
Message matching plays a key role in getting your site visitors to interact with your brand.
Don’t scare off your website visitors by forcing a long-term commitment to them. Instead, utilize micro-commitments. On-page lead flows are an excellent way to get your ready-to-commit visitors to do just that.
The Data Doesn’t Lie: Website Page Optimization Works
Ditch the old tactics and myths in favor of new methods that your consumers aren’t expecting.
Here’s a good one: Most marketers live by the myth that landing pages with above-the-fold CTAs. That means many brands stuff what they think is “important” into the first paragraph or so of their page, because, with 52% of worldwide online traffic happening on mobile devices, there is very little screen room to work with. While this tactic could work for some, many consumers find it frustrating because you aren’t taking the time to lead them in or talk with them. Instead, you are forcing your sale upon them right off the bat.
Here’s a solution: Don’t offer it all up in the first few paragraphs! Leave a little to the imagination and let the reader decide if they want to know more. Research shows that longer landing pages can help brands generate upwards of than those with above-the-fold CTAs.
While the typical website conversion rate is approximately 2.35%, the top 10% of companies see conversion rates that are anywhere between three and five times higher than average. Why? Because they are reaching deep into their toolbox and going above and beyond the standard CRO practices.
3 Underutilized Tactics for Website Conversion Rate Optimization
All marketing professionals understand that they need to see each unique visitor as a potential new lead. To get that lead to make the jump from lead to a paying customer, you need to spark that action. While traditional lead generation methods can help, it’s 2020, and that means it’s time to start thinking outside of the box.
Consider each of these three underutilized tactics for website conversion rate optimization.
1. Message Matching
Online content is crucial to any marketing strategy. However, it lacks some of the most vital parts of an in-person sales pitch, such as the:
Physical gestures involved in a natural exchange
The expressions a person’s voice and face emit during a conversation
These aren’t easily captured in the written word. That’s why message matching is crucial to website conversion rate optimization. Message matching is the art of aligning your web page’s message (which includes your page’s design, copy, and general message) with the rest of your content channels.
For example, most people come across your brand via a search engine, such as Google, after they’ve entered a search query. Whether it’s the headline or the meta description, something you’ve conveyed to them caught their attention and encouraged them to click on your link. That same message needs to be carried over into the copy and design on your web page to encourage them to make the conversion from visitor to customer.
2. Micro-commitments
You may be implementing micro-commitments without knowing it. This concept revolves around the idea that people don’t like to commit to something, especially for nothing.
Expecting a first-time visitor to your website is very unlikely to make the conversion to a customer. Studies have repeatedly stated that it takes an average of eight touches to get a lead to make a conversion.
Micro-commitments help you to encourage interaction between your website visitors and your brand. This allows your visitors to decide whether you are worth investing in. In other words, it helps to take the pressure out of the relationship.
Excellent examples of micro-commitments include:
Sharing a post on social media or asking them to follow your pages in exchange for an exclusive offer
Signing up for your brand’s email newsletter
Partaking in a free trial offer
Offering special rewards for participating in surveys
Emphasizing these micro-commitments is an excellent way to help you build lasting, trusting relationships between you and your potential leads. They also help you increase your website conversion rates because they are encouraging visitors to interact instead of simply viewing and leaving.
3. Lead Flows
Pop-ups are a frequently used tool that is intended to help grab the reader’s attention and direct them to a specific offer. While it’s true that many consumers find random pop-ups to be annoying, when done right, website pop-ups average a 3.09% conversion rate.
The key to making a pop-up effective is to turn it into a lead flow – a pop-up designed to attract the attention of those on a mission. Lead flows are intended for those who are already prepared to act.
It’s crucial to remember that effective lead flows must offer something of extreme value, but also needs to be highly personalized to those who are ready to act now. These aren’t your standard newsletter signup pop-ups, so don’t treat them as such.
Here’s an excellent example from Smart Insights, a website many digital marketers turn to when researching various industry practices:
This particular lead flow works because Smart Insights knows exactly who their audience is (digital marketers) and what they are most likely looking for (help with their strategy).
This instantly grabs the visitor’s attention, and it demands action since the visitor must click on it to close it. However, for those on a mission to improve their digital marketing and overall strategy building, this lead flow is attractive because it addresses their pain point and offers them a simple micro-commitment (their email address) in exchange for access to the template.
In this case, your visitor is likely to shrug off the fact that this pop-up interrupted their searching because it gives them something of value right away for little to no commitment.
The Bottom Line
These three website conversion rate optimization tactics are only a few tactics that, when done right, are sure to help you see the desired increase in your overall conversion rates. When implemented with the right content marketing strategy, they are not only going to draw new eyes to your brand but encourage the relationships you are looking for between you and your targeted audience.
Is your content marketing strategy lacking? Then book a free 15-minute consultation with a top-of-the-line content marketing agency to help you get started on the right foot.

What Is The “Percent For Public Art Program?”
TorontoRealtyBlog
Well, if you read Wednesday’s blog, you’ll probably know it’s the answer to Wednesday’s blog question: “What’s the origin of the art in front of Toronto condos?”
Alas, developers aren’t commissioning for the creation of art on their own.
They’re being forced to.
For those of you that thought people do good things of their own free will and desire, sorry to burst your bubble on a Friday…
You just had to know this was coming, right?
The entire impetus for this blog post was a friend asking me, “How come so many condo developers are incorporating art into the design of their new buildings?”
Um, they’re not.  Not by choice, anyways.
As with many things in life today, you can file this under the category of, “We’re doing it because the government is telling us to.”
Toronto’s “Percent For Public Art Program” was implemented in 2010, but the idea of incorporating art into city buildings dates back decades, from what I’ve read about the subject.
The origin can be found in Section 37 of the Planning Act, which permits the City to authorize increases in permitted height and/or density through the zoning bylaw in return for community benefits.
Now do you see where this is going?
We often hear people muse things like, “…I’m sure city will let the developer build double the height of any neighbouring building, so long as they build a parkette outside.”
I’ve heard cynics say, “…so the developer got permission to build a tower 40% higher than the bylaw states, because he included three subsidized housing units in a 400-unit condo?”
Give it five minutes, and I’m sure you could think of five other similar examples.
The words “in return for community benefits” have massive implications.
Out of Section 37 of The Planning Act came “The Percent For Public Art Program,” which you can read at your leisure by clicking that link; all 40 pages of it.
The name comes from the idea that if you earmarked just one percent of the cost of construction of a condominium for art, the city would be a brighter, better, more beautiful place.
Okay, those are my words.
But I think “bright, better, beautiful” are in line with the thinking of many of today’s politicians – maybe the same ones who put picnic benches on the road on King Street, in what used to be a lane of traffic.  But that’s a topic for another day.  A day, next year, when we say, “Wow, has it been a year already?” upon the “pilot project” becoming official…
Cynical?  Yes.
But let’s not forget that not every idea the City of Toronto has, is one that makes sense…
The first page of the Percent For Public Art Program gives us this nugget:
“Public art installations, both publicly and privately owned, make walking through the City’s streets, open spaces and parks a delight for residents, workers and visitors alike.” SECTION 3.1.4 TORONTO OFFICIAL PLAN, 2002
As I said, the entire concept of public art pre-dates the 2010 program.
So now comes the mission statement:
High quality public art is important to the enhancement of Toronto’s urban fabric. Public art has created landmarks throughout the city and already contributes to the identity and character of many of our neighbourhoods and districts. The City of Toronto has a broad definition of public art that provides artists with a variety of opportunities to enrich the urban environment. Public art can be unexpected moments of beauty, amusement, reflection or intrigue. These works of art might serve as monuments or memorials or represent other creative, innovative and exploratory ideas or expressions for the area. It is widely recognized that public art has the ability to boost economic development and tourism by making destinations for visitors and local residents. The next wave of city building brings with it the exciting opportunity of securing new public art installations across Toronto.
You can agree, or disagree.
As I wrote in Wednesday’s blog, we all have a different idea of what “art” is, and we all have a larger or smaller place for it in our lives.
When it comes to public money, however, we deserve to know what’s going on, and we will all have an opinion on effectiveness and necessity of government expenditures, hence my inclusion of the rubber ducky…
So now comes the rationale:
The feasibility of an on-site public art program is governed, in part, by the available funding. Due to the size of contribution generally required to implement an effective public art program, on-site public art installations are primarily suited to larger-scale development (refer to Appendix 1: Budget Examples).
These guidelines recommend the “one percent for public art” model. This recommendation is based on common practice found within numerous successful public art programs in North America, Europe and other countries around the world. It is the “tried and true” target that enables the public art to have impact on the site in relation to the other 99% of the building budget.
Specifically, the recommended minimum public art contribution for a development should be based on one percent of the gross construction cost (GCC) of that development. To obtain a standard estimation for the GCC value, the calculation is to be derived from the most recent release of the Toronto Area Chief Building Officials Committee’s (TACBOC) Construction Value Standard (refer to Table 1 for examples of contribution calculations). The TACBOC schedule reflects the average construction cost by building type within the Greater Toronto Area and is the accepted method of calculating construction costs related to the issuance of building permits within the City of Toronto.
While a minimum value of 1% of gross construction costs is recommended for public art in development projects, that target may not be achievable on every project. In a large project, an on-site public art program with a value of less than 1% of gross construction costs may be feasible or appropriate. In other smaller projects, a cash contribution towards off-site public art may be secured with a specified value comprising less than 1% of gross construction costs.
Here is the table mentioned:
Keep in mind, this table was included in the 2010 policy framework, thus the 2009-2010 numbers.
So now that we know what the program is, where and when it was derived, and how the tax, er, sorry – I mean “contribution,” is calculated, how does the developer make said contribution?
As per one of the following:
In addressing the City’s policy framework for public art, the applicant has the following options:
• ‘On-site’ Contribution: The applicant may commission public artwork to the value of the public art contribution (recommended one percent of the gross construction cost of the development) and such works shall be located upon the subject property or publicly owned lands adjacent thereto; or
• ‘Off-site’ (pooled) Contribution: The applicant may direct the value of the public art contribution to the City’s off-site pooled Public Art Reserve Fund. The fund will be used towards City-supported public art plans on publicly owned lands in the local community; or
• ‘On-site/Off-site’ Combination: The applicant may commission public art work on the subject property or publicly owned lands adjacent thereto and allocate the remaining portion of the public art contribution to the City’s off-site pooled Public Art Reserve Fund to be used as discussed above.
So now you know how, where, and why we obtain “public art.”
Developers can either choose the “on site” contribution, and provide us with art like that which appeared in Wednesday’s blog, or they can simply “contribute” to the “pooled” slush fund, er, sorry – I mean “reserve fund.”
But I’m going to leave you with one last nugget of information here, folks.
My question, which could be quite leading at this point, is very simple: who pays for the artwork?
The 1% of construction costs, I mean.
The $2,000,000 paid to the artist, or the city, by the developer, when a condominium costs $200,000,000 to construct?
Yes – I know I said “by the developer” above, but that’s not the answer.
Who really pays, in the end?
You.
The buyer of the condo.
If you think, for one second, that developers – in between ribbon-cutting ceremonies for these art projects, are actually going to pay for them, then you’re as naive as the buyers that walk into the condo sales centres with no agents.
Here’s a sample “Statement of Adjustments” from a condo purchase, and note the bolded item:
HST Rebate: $26,894.68 Deposit Administration Fee: $254.25 Interest on deferred amount: $2,528.48 Common expenses: $1,223.84 Estimated 2014 reality taxes: $881.94 Estimated 2015 interim reality taxes: $1,749.50 Tarion fee: $971.80 Status Certificate: $100.00 Legal Fees Re Partial Discharge(s) (vendor mortgage discharge fees): $621.50 Bennett Jones LLP (builder’s lawyer): $975.75 Charge-Improvement/Art: $577.51 Hydro, Water Gas: $514.38 Education: $614.72 Section 3: $9,409.51 Law Society Levy: $73.45 2 Bedroom Levy: $6,579.99
There you have it, folks.
$577.51 for an “art levy.”
The fact that the buyer is paying for the builder’s mortgage discharge, and the builder’s legal fees from Bennett Jones LLP, is a full blog post unto itself, as well as the idea of a “Section 3 Levy” which is completely unexplained, but I digress…
So while the city’s efforts to bring art to our streets should be applauded – because I do, despite my political leanings/rantings, see a public benefit in some of these projects, let’s not pretend that this is something it’s not.
It’s a tax on the buyer, plain and simple.
Whether the City of Toronto knows, or knew, that the developer would simply charge back their “art levies,” and “education levies,” and “greenspace levies,” perhaps isn’t the issue.
But I sure as hell don’t think it’s fair to credit condo developers for “contributing” to the greater good, by providing art to the city streets, when it’s an initiative forced on them by the City, and they’re writing a cheque from the pocket of their condo-buyers.
Give the residents of Toronto the credit for this one for investing in culture and the arts, whether they knew they were paying for it, or not…

27 Reasons Why Your Content Sucks
Nobody thinks their content sucks – or, in other words, is weak and not deserving to be believed.
After all, why would someone intentionally create something that’s utterly useless for their organization or their audience?
And yet, a lot of content sucks. We’ve all seen (and sometimes created) it.
Consider this article the proverbial splash of cold water to help you wake up (or more importantly, wake your content up).
More than 70 people responded to my request for examples of bad content, but almost all demurred to offer real-life examples. But one brave, smart content creator came forward to share her own experience: Christina Russ of Gage Diamonds.
“Sadly, I’m guilty of writing (weak) content at times,” she says. “Here’s a piece I wrote that no one will ever read because, honestly, no one gives a crap about what I’m selling.”
“Despite the fact that I write that type of content, I have my moments of sanity. Here’s a better piece I wrote,” Christina says.
Christina smartly recognized the difference between the two posts: “One is (perceived as) beneficial to the business. The other is beneficial to the readers because it provides useful information about store credit cards and financing opportunities.”
A lack of focus on the audience’s needs was frequently cited as a key mistake.
Now, that we have the audience-focus thing on the list, let’s dive into 27 more characteristics of content that sucks.
HANDPICKED RELATED CONTENT: 4 Ways to Shift Your Thinking to Truly Focus on Your Audience
1. Another of the same
Blog posts that just sum up what you can find through Google searches. Regurgitation of basic information that’s reformatted on a company blog with a lot of injected ads, unnecessary links, and keyword stuffing in hopes of achieving a high SERP rank. If all your blog post does is tell me the same information I can find through a simple Google search, then it’s (weak).
Dew Smith, managing editor, Vendasta
Not only has the topic been dealt with, but even the angle taken is too familiar … I don’t need to read what’s already been published 300 times. I am not saying invent something new, just don’t share the same 10 tips that everyone is sharing.

3. We before you
Whether it is on Twitter, blogs, or company collateral, there seems to be a recent trend to overemphasize statements about oneself or to put the company ahead of the customer. No matter the content type, this type of self-indulgence is weak. You’ll lose the reader because of braggadocios puffery. Remove the ‘I’ and ‘we’ from your marketing.

4. Now obsolete
“You can have outstanding blogs when first published that ultimately turn (weak) because they are outdated.
“I rewrote this post about concussion-related light sensitivity, even though it was already ranking number one for several target keywords. I did it because: 1) it took too long to answer the question that most searchers were asking, which resulted in a high bounce rate and low average time on page. The original post wasted a lot of valuable real estate sharing info on general characteristics of post-concussion syndrome vs. the meat of the content related to light sensitivity AND 2) new research had been published, which I wanted to include to make it fresh and relevant. “

But that misses the point entirely. Content should always fulfill its purpose and do it in a succinct, respectful way that doesn’t waste a reader’s time – regardless of if it’s 10 seconds or 10 minutes.

“It’s focused on attacking other players in the market, trying to put the competition down and creating conflict to get attention.

20. Word selection
The words are not compelling enough. This doesn’t mean use exciting vs. boring words but words that are appropriate for the content piece’s goal and the audience who would read it.

Community Management: A Social Media Expert Spills Her Secrets
Christin Kardos leads social media for Convince and Convert, an organization that teaches marketers how to be socially savvy. We wanted to know: How does the expert’s expert build and manage communities?
Essential social mindset
I asked Christin for tips on how to think like a community builder. Here are her recommendations in her own words.
Master the art of banter
As marketers and businesspeople, we know social presents tremendous opportunities for business … but when it’s used only as a broadcast channel, you’re failing to make connections. If you’re not connecting with people, it’s just a bunch of noise. It’s not enough to say, “Here’s something we think is awesome that you’ll like.” You need to respond to comments, answer questions, and incorporate the idea of being useful in one-on-one conversations. If you’re not doing those things, you’re wasting your and others’ time. Social media really is for socializing.
If you’re not answering questions & having 1-1 convos, you’re wasting time on #socialmedia. @ChristinKardos Click To Tweet

Mind the machine
In the last year, we’ve worked hard to increase internal cohesion. We’ve streamlined our internal processes – something that was necessary because our team is expanding. We’re able to do more in terms of cross-functionality and visibility. For example, I’m in charge of organic social, but I don’t manage our social advertising. Now we have a person in house who I meet with once a week to ensure we streamline our efforts across the board. Sococo has been a critical tool to get this done. (Learn about the other tools Christin uses below.)

Be fearless
People have a misconception about what it means to be a marketing expert. For example, our president at Convince and Convert, Jay Baer, is a master and he knows a lot of things, but he’s always excited to check out new territory and try new tools. You’d be surprised at how much energy we put into trying new things at Convince and Convert. We don’t have it all sorted out. For example, right now we are working on a messenger bot for Jay’s page, hoping it can become a growth tool … so I’m doing a lot of research about bots and how we can apply them best.
Even marketing experts need to try new things for growth, says @ChristinKardos via @convince. Click To Tweet

Learn to pace yourself
When I first started doing this for a living, I had a hard time turning things off. Over time I’ve gotten used to the idea that at some point you must sleep. If someone tweets at 2 a.m., they’re not going to get an answer. I want to do the best possible job I can, and my definition of that has evolved. Doing the best job doesn’t mean I have to stop and answer every tweet because then I lose traction on everything else that’s important.
Even #socialmedia managers must sleep – it’s OK if a 2 a.m. tweet doesn’t get an instant reply. @ChristinKardos Click To Tweet
Essential Social Media Tools
Christin shares her list of go-to tools for social analytics, internal communication, employee advocacy, and more.
Native analytics
People underestimate the usefulness of Twitter and Facebook native analytics. These give us critical demographic information about our audience.

Rival IQ
We depend on Rival IQ to gather information about our audience – as well as other groups’ audiences. It’s our primary social analytics tool.

Sococo
We seldom get on the phone internally because we use a virtual office tool called Sococo. It imitates the informal collaboration in a physical office to a virtual office through a browser-based tool. See who’s at their desk, call a meeting, and invite people in to your “room.” If someone has a quick question, they can knock on your virtual door and chat via text. We love it because it incorporates texting, phone, and video conferencing.

Sigstr
We use Sigstr to spread campaigns through employee emails. It lets us add a custom message or link to the bottom of our employees’ email signatures. Individual employees only have to install it once. If this week we are trying to promote sales for Content Marketing World, for example, I can go into Sigstr and add that promotion. It will auto-populate on everyone’s outgoing emails. Plus, the tool has great functionality, such as setting up campaigns for emails sent among employees versus those sent to third parties.

Vidyard
Vidyard offers a slick Chrome extension called Viewed It. You can do a screen capture that includes a bubble in the bottom corner showing your webcam feed. I can be showing a demo on my screen, but also recording a video of myself talking during the demo. Jay Baer uses it internally. If he wants to show us a new idea, he creates a five-minute video that records both his screen and himself at the same time. It has a wide range of applications.
