So Netflix Marvel basically made the Hand start off as a Japanese clan of ninja with a side order of Chinese mysticism.
Turn into a blended Chinese/Japanese-inspired cult seeking to colonise a partly-Chinese mostly-blended-Asian area (but destroy it instead of colonising it because drama).
And end up as a vaguely Asian cult where a white woman is in charge of four POC and enslaves a WOC.
I mean. At least it resolves itself with Elektra and Colleen unintentionally working together to wipe them out but damn the Hand was a mess.
For the record, I love Nobu, Gao, and Bakuto, but the Hand really was a mess and they could have done so much better if they'd stopped before they made it Generic Asian Antagonists because it went all downhill from there.
(Colleen being half-Chinese, half-Japanese could have been even more of an amazing commentary on the Hand if they'd stuck to the idea that the Hand was a Japanese-origin ninja clan that attacked and wanted to steal from K'un-Lun and Gao alone was a traitor of K'un-Lun, instead of whatever they thought they were doing with Reid.)
(I'm not going to get into the issues around Tibet and China but I am not surprised that Netflix Marvel didn't bother to address that at all.)
(Also, I find it incredibly disrespectful that they not only introduced a white leader of the Hand who hails from an Asian country, but also that Sowande, the Black leader, was reduced to a gun-wielding gangster. I have no comments on Murakami other than being disappointed that they made him Nobu's puppet master instead of his replacement or equal.)

Daredevil Character List
Hello! Welcome to my rambling recaps for the show formerly known as Netflix’s Daredevil! Before I get this puppy off the ground I thought I’d do a little table setting for you. Context matters, in the world of recaps and life.
These recaps are the byproduct of another set of recaps I just finished for the RTÉ/AMC+ show Kin. It stars Charlie Cox as a fuzzy hitman. If you like family melodrama and Irish accents, I highly recommend giving it a try.
Unlike Kin, a tiny show with a tiny fandom, Daredevil has an expansive audience and canon. Even as far as recaps are concerned, this is well trod ground. In an effort to simplify things and keep myself happy, I’ll be sticking to the Netflix/Disney+ universe and willfully ignoring everything else.
While I try not to editorialize too much it does happen, and I’m not shy about making my opinions known. I love everybody in this bar but I do have my favorites. What I’m trying to say here is, if you don’t love Matthew Murdock with the fire of a thousand suns, these may not be the recaps for you.
These recaps, and everything else in this post, may include spoilers for the entire Daredevil series, along with The Defenders and Matt’s appearance on She Hulk. Please don’t spoil yourself.
Now, a brief introduction to some of the show’s key characters from season 1, as determined by me. I reserve the right to edit at will.
Nelson & Murdock
Tumblr media
Matthew Murdock/The Man in Black/Daredevil- Crime fighting catholic lawyer with anger issues; son of a boxer; blinded by accident, orphaned on purpose; earnest past the point of reason; believes in redemption; looks good bloody; looks like Charlie Cox
Franklin ‘Foggy’ Nelson- The practical half of Nelson & Murdock; Matt’s former college roommate, partner in law and life; good lawyer; anti-vigilante; snarky softy; he just wants to make some money honey
Karen Page- Nelson & Murdock client turned office manager; professional nosey parker;  does a good job getting into bad shit; pro-vigilante; mysterious past; looks like Jessica from True Blood but blonde
Other Good Guys
Tumblr media
Claire Temple- Matt’s nurse on call; snarky and practical; pro-Daredevil, anti-Matt dying young; magnet for vigilante superheroes and/or hot dudes going through a bad time
Ben Urich- Seasoned old-school reporter; loves the truth, hates fluff pieces; knows where all the bodies are buried; good husband and mentor; pro-vigilante; strangled to death by Fisk
Brett Mahoney- The only honest cop in Hell’s Kitchen; Foggy’s childhood nemesis; loves his mama; re: vigilantes, it’s complicated
Father Lantom- Matt’s priest; loves a good latte; excellent secret keeper; unwittingly feeds Matt’s redemption kink; neutral on vigilantes but believes in God’s justice
Bad guys
Tumblr media
Wilson Fisk- My/your/our employer; here to save his city and do some crime; will beat you to death with his bare hands; loves his momma, Vanessa, Wesley, patricide and French omelettes; pro-loyalty and decorum, anti-anyone not doing exactly what he wants
James Wesley- Fisk’s number one flunky; the face of the operation; killed by Karen/hubris
Vanessa Marianna- Art dealer with flexible morals; loves giant men with questionable business practices
Tumblr media
Madame Gao- The Best; head of the Chinese criminal faction; immortal finger of The Hand (we’ll get to it); she’s just here to kick ass and mess folks around
Leland Owlsley- The smarmy money guy; can’t resist a one-liner; killed by Fisk
Nobu Yoshioka- Representative of The Hand; beats the snot out of Matt; accidentally burns himself to death (I said what I said)
Anatoly and Vladimir Ranskahov- Russian mob brothers; ‘I am the Demon Wolf!’; beaten and beheaded by Fisk and shot to death by dirty cops, respectively
Part 1 of the first recap is now available here! If you like long, rambling recaps full of spoilers for a show that was cancelled almost 5 years ago, check it out.

Pitch for a video game: “Marvel’s Hawkeye”, a co-op game developed by Hazelight Studios (It Takes Two, A Way Out)
At the start menu, the two players are presented with this choice:
1) Clint Barton and Derek Bishop
2) Kate Bishop and Nicole Barton
In a standalone Marvel universe, Clint Barton is a famous circus performer under the name “The Hawkeye”. Alongside his daughter/protege, Nicole Barton, the two are known for dazzling audiences with their death-defying archery stunts. Also existing in this world is Kate Bishop, an Olympian athlete who won the gold medal in archery. She was trained by her father, Derek Bishop.
At the start, Player 1 and 2 control two different pairs; Clint and Nicole, Kate and Derek. This is to set up the tragedy that kicks off the game’s main story. While performing at one of their shows, Nicole Barton is killed when a bomb goes off in the audience. Around the same time, Derek Bishop is gunned down while driving his daughter home from the gym.
Five years then pass.
Clint Barton is now a depressed wreck, retired from the circus in order to focus solely on finding who was responsible for his daughter’s death. Kate Bishop has become a ruthless vigilante (along the lines of Ronin) who is also thirsty for revenge. The two follow a lead on their respective loved one’s murder, causing them to cross paths. Although they don’t trust each other at first, Clint and Kate decide to join forces when they realize that they’re both after the same, mysterious villain.
And that’s where the main game begins. Clint and Kate have to work as a team to avenge their loved ones. As the game goes on, the two form a father figure-daughter figure relationship, which helps them heal from their past trauma.
MISCELLANEOUS NOTES:
* In case the set-up is confusing, there are two playable pairs (Clint and Nicole, Kate and Derek). The point is that both players will end up losing a character since whoever is playing as Clint will die as Derek, and whoever is playing as Kate will die as Nicole. So when Clint and Kate join forces, both players will have felt some level of loss.
* Nicole Barton is based on the Ultimate Marvel comics
* The main villain is revealed to be Kagenobu Yoshioka, a high-ranking crime boss who runs Japan’s most powerful Yakuza syndicate known as “The Hand” (Netflix Marvel, anyone?). Nicole Barton’s death was accidental since the Hand meant to kill someone in the audience. Derek Bishop was killed since he had massive debts with the Hand.
* The secondary villain is Bullseye, who is Nobu’s lead assassin and the one who carried out Derek’s murder and the explosion that killed Nicole.
* While it’d be neat to have Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld reprise their roles, if I had to recast, I’d have Jeffrey Pierce (Tommy Miller, The Last of Us) as Clint Barton and Chloe Bennet (Daisy Johnson, Agents of SHIELD) as Kate Bishop.
* Just like “It Takes Two” and “A Way Out”, there are tons of co-op minigames that the players can do. Since this is an archery-centric game, there should be minigames like darts and cornhole.
* Other Marvel characters do show up, but only as either cameos or guest appearances. Characters who I’d include for sure: Black Widow, Daredevil, Mockingbird, Elektra Natchios, The Punisher

Video
youtube
So a few weeks ago, I said that “Shake it Out” by Florence + The Machine had a lot of lines that could be incorporated into a Daredevil fic. Then I thought it would be a really good song for a fan edit. No such edit existed, so I made one myself. Obviously, I don’t own anything--I just thought it would be cool to do some implicit commentary about Matt instead of my usual explicit commentary.
Also, I meant to include more characters, but this kind of just became a video about Matt, Foggy, and Karen. I guess it’s fitting given my blog name, though.
I’ve never done anything like this before, and I don’t really have any video editing experience at all (other than just for like random class projects)--it was just for fun! If you watch it, I hope you like it.
Also, I wanted to try to do my best to include some image descriptions (it’s below the cut). I wasn’t sure what made the most sense since it’s a longer video, so I just matched up the lyrics to the clip from the show that I used. However, if anyone has any suggestions about how to make that better (this is actually my first time doing this in general), please feel free to let me know, and I’d be happy to make changes.
Regrets collect like old friends: A young Matt runs toward his father lying dead in an alley. When he reaches the body, he drops his cane and falls to his knees.
Here to relive your darkest moments: Matt cradles Elektra’s body in his arms and lowers her to the ground.
I can see no way, I can see no way: Matt and Elektra kiss as the walls of the tunnel they are in collapse around them, surrounding them in complete darkness.
And all of the ghouls: Wilson Fisk, wearing an orange prison jump suit, turns around to look over his shoulder.
come out to play: Nobu Yoshioka, with scars on his face and standing in greenish light, turns to look over his shoulder.
And every demon: Benjamin Pointdexter, wearing a fake red Daredevil suit, turns to look over his shoulder.
wants his pound of flesh: Nobu, using blades on the ends of chains (Kyoketsu-shoge), cuts Matt, dressed in the black Daredevil suit, across the stomach. Blood flows from the wound.
But I like to keep some things to myself: The camera focuses on Matt’s face, which is expressionless. The camera pans down to his fists, which tighten around his cane, making his knuckles white.
I like to keep my issues drawn: The camera, angled upward toward Matt, focuses on Matt clenching his fist.
It's always darkest: The camera lowers over Matt from behind. He’s standing in yellow light and is dressed in the black Daredevil suit and standing on the top of a building
before the dawn: Close-up shot of Matt’s eyes from the shot before.  And I've been a fool and I've been blind: Matt speaking. He’s wearing a green jacket, green baseball cap, and black sunglasses.
I can never leave the past behind: Young Matt sits next to stick on a bench. The clip starts with Stick pointing his cane at Matt’s neck. Stick gradually moves it away as the camera zooms in on his face. He is wearing a green hat, green shirt, and black glasses.
I can see no way, I can see no way: Matt walks forward away from a glass door. He’s again wearing a green jacket, green baseball cap, and black sunglasses.
I'm always dragging that horse around: The camera focuses in on Matt, wearing the same outfit as before. An apparition of Wilson Fisk appears out of focus in the background wearing a white suit.
All of his questions, such a mournful sound: Matt is sitting down, wearing the black Daredevil suit with no mask. An apparition of Wilson Fisk, this time in focus but again wearing a white suit, appears in the background.
Tonight I'm gonna bury that horse in the ground: Matt attacks the apparition of Fisk, punching him in the face and making him fall to his knees before snapping his neck.
So I like to keep my issues drawn: Matt, wearing a black shirt, dangles a silver cross around a black string from his finger before tossing it onto a bed.
But it's always darkest before the dawn: Matt, wearing a black shirt and sporting a scraped up cheek, stands silently in the dark with his eyes closed. In the background is a white statue of an angel.
Shake it out, shake it out: The camera zooms in quickly on Matt, who is wearing the red Daredevil suit.
shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa: Matt, wearing the black Daredevil suit, deflects red projectiles with wooden batons.
Shake it out, shake it out: Matt, wearing the black Daredevil suit, walks out of a doorway, carrying a little boy in his arms.
shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa: The camera zooms in on Matt, wearing the black Daredevil mask, pulling his face out of a puddle in the rain as blood drips from his mouth. It’s dark.
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back, So shake him off, oh whoa: Matt, with a black piece of fabric tied around his eyes, raises his bloody fingers to his split lip. The video then cuts to his silhouette against yellow light, his arms moving quickly in different boxing combinations.
And I am done with my graceless heart: Matt is speaking angrily while wearing a white shirt. He’s covered in blood, and one of his hands is pressed over his chest.
So tonight I'm gonna cut it out and then restart: Matt, dressed in the black Daredevil costume, struggles with Pointdexter in the fake red Daredevil suit. Pointdexter grabs a pair of scissors and throws them into Matt’s chest.
'Cause I like to keep my issues drawn: Matt, dressed in a black Daredevil suit, crouches on top of a building, holding onto a stone cross. It’s nighttime.
It's always darkest before the dawn: Again, Matt crouches on top of a building wearing the black Daredevil suit during nighttime.  Shake it out, shake it out: Foggy Nelson and Karen Page stand outside in a crowd during the night. Red lights from police cars flash over their faces.
shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa: Matt, Foggy, and Karen stand together on top of a roof, talking.
Shake it out, shake it out: Matt and Karen lie in a stone coffin together. Matt has just pushed the lid of the coffin off of them.
shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa: Foggy, standing in a dark room, rushes forward to punch Pointdexter, wearing a fake Daredevil suit, in the face multiple times.
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back, So shake him off, oh whoa: Pointdexter, wearing the fake Daredevil suit and standing near the edge of a balcony, grabs a piece of wood and stands over Matt in the black Daredevil suit. He raises the woods as if to stab him before Karen hits him with a wooden beam and he falls over the edge of the balcony onto the floor below. And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back: Matt sits in a confessional, speaking with tears in his eyes as he nods his head.
And given half the chance would I take any of it back: Matt, in a suit, stands next to Sister Maggie in a brightly lit room. He gestures toward his eyes with two fingers and adjusts his red glasses.
It's a fine romance: Jack Murdock cradles a baby Matt, wrapped in a white blanket, in his arms. The camera cuts to a young Maggie Murdock, who is being led out a door by nuns.
but it's left me so undone: Jack cradles a young Matt’s head in his hands. The camera cuts to Sister Maggie cradling a grown up Matt, who has bloody bandages wrapped around his torso, in her arms.
It's always darkest before the dawn: Matt, wearing a white tank top and a cross around his neck, shakes his head in disbelief.  Oh whoa, oh whoa...: Pointdexter and Matt fight in the dark Bulletin office, throwing punches at each other.  And I'm damned if I do: Matt, in the red Daredevil suit, sits chained up against a building in the middle of the night. A gun is taped to his hand, which he gestures with.
and I'm damned if I don't: The camera cuts away from Matt to Frank Castle, who is speaking to Matt.
So here's to drinks in the dark at the end of my road: Matt breaks away from the chains. He rushes forward toward Frank who is standing across from Elliot Grote.
And I'm ready to suffer: Matt lies on a brown couch covered with a white blanket. His torso is exposed and it and his face are covered with deep cuts.
and I'm ready to hope: Matt and Foggy stand outside at night, with Matt slightly ahead and to the left of Foggy. Matt is holding a cane and wearing dark sunglasses. Matt smirks.
It's a shot in the dark aimed right at my throat: Matt, wearing the black Daredevil costume, kneels in the middle of the street in front of a man holding an iron rod.
'Cause looking for heaven: Matt and Karen stand in the rain. Matt raises his hand to stroke Karen’s cheek.
found the devil in me: Cut to Matt in the red Daredevil costume, again cupping Karen’s cheek.
Looking for heaven: Matt stands across from Foggy in the daylight and crosses his finger across his chest.
found the devil in me: Foggy and Matt stand in a dark room. Matt, wearing a black mask, steps forward in front of Foggy, running a baton through his fingers.
Well, what the hell, I'm gonna let it happen: Matt, wearing the black Daredevil costume, and Fisk, wearing a white suit, stand across from each other in a hallway and scream. Matt rushes forward and tackles Fisk.
to me, yeah: Matt, wearing the black Daredevil suit, rests his hands on a bloody Fisk. He pulls away and screams.
Shake it out shake it out: Matt and Karen sit next to each other in their office. They’re both smiling.
shake it out, shake it out: A younger Matt and Foggy walk down the sidewalk together, holding onto each other. They laugh and Matt jumps up and down.
ooh whoa: Matt and Foggy sit next to each other at Josie’s bar, laughing. Foggy gestures widely with his arms.
Shake it out, shake it out: Matt and Karen stand outside of a building together next to each other. They are both smiling.
shake it out, shake it out: Matt and Karen sit across from each other at a table at a restaurant. There are several colorful lightbulbs in the background.
ooh whoa: Matt and Foggy stand next to each other in the office, wearing suits. Foggy says something and Matt turns his head towards him, smiling.
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back, So shake him off: The camera zooms in on Matt’s face. He’s smiling. The camera then cuts to Foggy and Karen standing across from him. They are also smiling. Foggy leans in to hug Matt.
oh whoa: Karen cradles Matt’s head in her hands as she pulls him close to her and hugs him.
Shake it out, shake it out: Matt sits at a desk with Foggy standing across from him near his own desk. Small plastic dinosaurs can be seen arranged across the partition between the two desks. Matt and Foggy fist bump.
shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa: At Josie’s bar, Foggy and Karen stand in front of a shelf with pitchers of water. Karen smiles and walks away from the shelf, shuddering and shaking her arms in disgust.
Shake it out, shake it out: In a college dorm room, Matt reaches out to shake Foggy’s hand. Foggy steps forward quickly and grabs Matt’s hand.
shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa: Karen stands in front of a window in Matt’s apartment. Purple light filters in through the window. Matt steps forward with a cup in each hand and offers her one.
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back, So shake him off, oh whoa: Foggy, Matt, and Karen sit around a table with food. They each have a drink in their hand, which they raise toward each other in a toast.

Commit to the bit: 3/5
- Which character do you think gets too much hate? -
{ Karen and Elektra. They're both fantastic. I dont understand why people hate them/find them annoying. }
- Which character do you think gets too much love? -
{ ... yeah, cant think of any. All the characters deserve all the love. Even Nobu. Especially Nobu. }
- Which character do you think wasn’t portrayed well? -
{ ... erm, well, sorta Karen, Vanessa, Sister Maggie and Grotto -- when it comes to their comic versions. They were changed, and I love the adaptation versions much more than the originals. }
- Do you have a otp that isn’t popular in fanon? Who is? -
{ Yeah: Matt/Karen, which is seemingly MUCH less popular than Kastle, and Matt/Kirsten. Also: Foggy/Marcie is pretty great, in my opinion. I feel like they did that well in the show -- and I feel Foggy NEEDS someone to ground him and tell him that hes not going crazy, ya know? }
- Who’s a villain you just love to hate? -
{ Kingpin (Donofrio is fantastic, and comic Kingpin is always a THING).
Bullseye (both show and comics). Hate those two so much that I love them.
Also! Mysterio! (Smith/Quesada in Guardian Devil) Fuck him! Just... fuck Mysterio! Hes a arrogant, narcissistic asshat and I hate with my entire being for REASONS.
You know how mfking CATHARTIC it was to see him ACCIDENTALLY shoot himself in Far From Home? I'll answer! AMAZINGLY cathartic. Thank you, Gyllenhaal, for portraying this character I hate SO much so brilliantly. Love ya man! Also, FUCK Mysterio!

Guess who I got to meet today!? Mr. Tommy Walker and Mr. Peter Shinkoda! Such an honor and since the con was so small I literally talked to them for an hour about daredevil and tommy's show realics and rarities. Such sweet hearts! So grounded and cool, that it helped me when I was waaayy too nervous to talk to them.
Tumblr media
They both fangirled over my bluray and actually gave me discounts on how much i had to pay after we all talked for so long. They even gave me that selfie for free. Honestly had the best time talking to Tommy about DnD and to Peter about asian diversity in media. They both remembered my name at their panel later and I seriously hope to see them again at another con. Peter figured out what fan I was on Twitter and said he finally was able to put a face to the account and told me he'd respond more... then this happened.
Tumblr media
He follows me back... Toby and Peter both follow me! Daredevil fan's dream! Seriously guys if you have a chance to meet and talk to them, DO IT!

Bracket G Round 1
Poll 9
Suzuki Nobu & Yoshioka Jun (@to-hell-with-good-intentions & @hilowperfixations) vs. Aubrey Miller (@serethespider)
401. Suzuki Nobu & Yoshioka Jun (@to-hell-with-good-intentions & @hilowperfixations)
He/him for both of them!
Two autistic middle schoolers against the world... They are silly. Nobu has too many brain cells and Jun has none. They are besties because Jun forced them to be. He hugged Nobu one day and has not let go since. Nobu did not like this at first but now they will both cry if they are separated. They do bestie activities like Jun braids Nobu’s hair while Nobu explains hyper advanced music theory concepts that he does not understand. Nobu got his first phone (he was previously very against technology) just to FaceTime with Jun. Jun has a silly little crush on Nobu and is very obvious about it but Nobu does not see... or does he????!?! They have a playlist together made of disco music and 15 minute long orchestral pieces. Also they both know Hatsune Miku.
Jun is a short, 13-year-old boy with light brown skin, dark, curly hair, and very bright outfits that look like they come straight out of the 1970s. Nobu is a pale, 13-year-old boy with blonde hair who dresses in sweater vests and khakis, like a college professor.
402. Aubrey Miller (@serethespider)
any/all
How does one begin to describe Aubrey Miller? They're a happy, bubbly people-pleaser. She's a primadonna theatre gay who thinks in stage metahpors. He's an interdimensional eldtritch being with unmatched telepathic powers who nobody has ever heard of because she's spent the past 700 years fucking around in small towns learning various trades and taking part in as many forms of performance as possible. They form their identity and mannerisms entirely around the preferences of the people she likes and then just switches out custom-crafted personas as needed. He has 4 concurrently active secret identities and counting. She once systematically ruined a man's entire life for hurting one of her friends. They once cried on the subway because they accidentally upset a stranger. When they're bored they like to layer contradictory lies on top of each other until someone sees through it all, and calls this practice Manipulation Jenga. At least three of my real person friends are actively terrified of them. Character Of All Time.

That moment you realize that the reason why the Hand storyline in Daredevil season 2 sucked so much was because Jeph Loeb told the writers to drop Nobu’s character arc and any storyline further developing the Hand because the audience “didn’t care about Asian characters”. Nobu could’ve been a well-developed antagonist had the writers been allowed to develop him.
This is a new one for me. For once, the anti-Asian sentiment from behind the scenes actually hurt the storyline and quality of the season.
EDIT: Oh, before I forget, Elektra! I distinctly remember that Elodie Yung once said in an interview that she had to fight to change the direction of her character. Apparently, they just wanted her to play the “exotic, dangerous ex-girlfriend”, which...yeah, that’s what happened in the show, but the original direction was apparently much worse.
