Catch Me If You Can! - SonAmy Fic
this is like pt 2 of the other one i posted (catching up with an umbrella) idk you don’t necessarily need to read that one but uhhhh yeah anyways pls enjoy :D
His shoes skidded and raised a puff of dust as the blue hedgehog came to an abrupt stop while racing about the bustling Shamarian marketplace. The familiar yet exotic scents tingled his nose as an intricately crafted and immensely detailed ceramic serving bowl caught his eyes just before he halted his sprinting. The tent was a pottery stand, humming with the quiet energy of the handmade terracotta vessels as the saleswoman assisted another visiting customer.
Sonic ran his fingers across the polished bowl, admiring the semi-reflective surface and floral patterns adorning the rim. Little streaks of a dusty blue hue ran around the pink roses, with petals scattered in between. The bowl itself was various tones of blue, with pink and green accents, along with a few gold finishes here and there.
And if Sonic recalled correctly, he owed a certain pink hedgehog a dish after causing her to accidentally turn the one she had into a glass jigsaw puzzle (which promptly ended up in the trash bin).
“Breathtaking, is it not?” an accented voice cut through his thoughts, drawing his attention to the very same saleswoman, who had seemingly finished chatting with the other shopper. Sonic glanced up at her, to mahogany eyes crinkling in amusement. “I just finished painting that this morning,” she continued, holding up her paint-splattered hands.
“It seriously is a work of art,” Sonic hummed, picking it up and testing its weight.
“I take it as quite the compliment from someone who has traveled and seen as much as you, Sonic,” the lady said, bringing a hand to her heart. Sonic offered her an easy grin, nodding in agreement.
”That it is,” he replied, setting the bowl back down with a soft clink. “How much is it?”
”Oh, please, if you like it, it is my honor to gift to you,” she dismissed his outstretched hand full of rings. “Hardly anything compared to the horrors you face to keep us safe.”
Sonic was no stranger to having things offered to him for free (perks of being a world-renowned hero), and he definitely took up those offers from time to time. But this time, he felt as if he wanted to purchase it. Not because of the vendor—though her craftsmanship certainly deserved the extra patronage—but because of Amy. It looked like a gift she’d appreciate, and where Sonic struggled with words, his actions usually compensated in ways that only Amy could truly cognize. He admired that about her, her ability to perceive others’ emotions even though they could sometimes be unfathomable to everyone else.
“No, no, I insist,” Sonic extended his hand again, overflowing with the copious amount of rings he was offering.
“No, I insist.”
“Mmmm…nope. I’m gonna pay for it.”
“At least allow me to give you a discount,” the woman fretted a tad as she realized the futility of such a conversation. She opened up a chest full of money, of shiny, golden rings. “80% off: 40 rings.”
Sonic ran the numbers through his head, doing a hasty calculation as the lady wrapped up the bowl in bubble wrap to avoid the risk of it shattering. She placed it in a tawny cardboard box before tying it up with a striking crimson ribbon. She pushed it forward to the half-pint hedgehog in front of her.
Sonic slammed a pile of rings onto the table, which jingled sharply in contrast to the muted clamor of the rest of the marketplace.
“Keep the change,” was the only thing he said before practically disappearing from there, before the saleswoman could protest.
Initially stunned by his sudden departure, the lady scrambled to count the abundant amount of golden rings he’d left behind.
200 rings. Full price.
“Wait! Sonic!” she called into the crowd, already knowing it was useless. “You didn’t have to…” Her voice died away as she relaxed her outstretched arm. She sighed, placing the rings into her chest along with the others. “…thank you.”
Rapid, incessant knocking usually denoted Sonic’s arrival at Amy’s front door, the few times he chose use the intended entrance and not the much more characterful window entrance. Amy practically tripped over her own feet scrambling to the door from where she had been kneeling by her coffee table, packing a little basket full of snacks. Indeed, when she opened the door, she was met with the enthusiastic face of her handsome blue hero.
“Sonic!” she exclaimed happily, waving in a greeting.
“Hey Amy!” he responded, shoving behind his back the parcel he’d been holding in front of him. Amy’s eyes followed it curiously.
“What’s that?” she asked him, pointing a finger at the brown box. The attached red ribbon flowed with the gentle breeze of the salubrious spring day.
“Oh this? Juuuust a little something I ran across today,” Sonic answered with a charming grin. “Happened to be in Shamar and you know how awesome their marketplace is. I ran across this cool stand and saw…”
Amy leaned on her front door as she drank in everything about the hedgehog before her. The little movement of his ears with the wind, the motions of his hands as he recounted his experience, the luster of his eyes when he glanced at her, Amy etched every detail into her memory as she hung onto every word coming from his mouth.
”…‘fore she could say other…wise…what?” Sonic raised an eyebrow at his staring friend. He could practically see the hearts in her eyes, the highlight of her lovestruck face.
“Nothing,” she murmured wistfully. “You look handsome today.”
Sonic’s quills stood up at this, and he was momentarily at a loss for how to respond. “What, I don’t look irresistible every day?” he ventured.
“Well, I mean—of course—but…” Amy stalled a second, hesitating. “I dunno…” she poked a finger at his cheek. “You look particularly dashing today.”
Sonic chuckled nervously in response, taking a step closer. “What good is the hero of your dreams if he doesn’t stop your heart in its tracks?” he shot back.
That sentence certainly did its job, because Amy’s finger flew away from his cheek and smacked her cheek along with her other hand. She hid her flaming face and muffled squealing from him, trying desperately to maintain her composure. Sonic laughed as he invited himself inside.
Her reactions were always the cherry on top of their banter.
He strode over to her dining table, setting the box down carefully in the center. Amy appeared over his shoulder, a pale pink stain on her cheeks the only indication of the flutter fest in her stomach a few seconds ago.
“Soooo are you gonna tell me what’s in there or not?” she asked, plopping her chin on his shoulder.
“Take a guess!” Sonic glanced over at her.
“Well…it’s not flowers, you bring those fresh,” Amy’s fist came to her face, reflecting her pensiveness. She picked it up, trying to judge the weight, but Sonic’s voice cut through her thoughts.
“Careful, it’s fragile,” he warned. “There’s your first hint.”
Amy’s brow furrowed in confusion, having even less of a clue of what it could be. “Shamar, Shamar, Shamar…” she muttered, racking her brain for things that could be bought in the marketplace. Food, clothes, jewelry…“Is it jewelry?”
“Nope,” Sonic replied, examining his gloves.
“Is it handmade?”
“Yup.”
The light bulb went off in Amy’s head.
“Shamar specialty.”
“Yup.”
“Really intricate and pretty.”
“Very.”
“Made of clay.”
“You know it.”
“Pottery.”
“Open it,” Sonic grinned, nudging her to the box. She pulled at the ribbon, watching it drop like a ruby waterfall as the folds of the box popped open. She peered inside and gasped when her hands found the dish.
“Oh Sonic…”
“Figured I owed you one after my super awesome stealth skills took you totally off guard,” he explained sheepishly.
“You really didn’t have to…gosh, this is so gorgeous!” Amy exclaimed, observing all the mini roses painted on the outside.
“I probably would’ve bought it anyway ‘cause it kinda reminded me of you, cause, you know, roses and all,” Sonic remarked casually.
Amy’s jade eyes darted to him, who hadn’t been looking at her. Though when his green eyes did meet her own, she scoured them for any hint of insincerity. She found none. A smile overtook her face as she set the bowl down, beaming at him.
Sonic could maybe describe her as radiant or glowing, but given the pink dusting on her cheeks, he settled on “rosy.”
Those kinds of smiles from her, he’d never admit it but they made him feel weak. They simply embodied her purity and unapologetic affection for him, something that he had come to realize had been a constant blessing in his life.
Feeling his blood start to pool in his cheeks, Sonic averted his eyes, instead focusing on the wispy clouds in the blue sky outside the window. Amy delicately moved the bowl into one of her glass kitchen cabinets, a clear view for anyone walking into the kitchen. She skipped back to Sonic, her energy evident in her bouncing on her heels even after halting in front of the blue hedgehog.
“So I was gonna go out and enjoy the lovely weather today, wanna come with? I made snacks!” Amy questioned, swinging her hands behind her back.
“Sure, why not?” Sonic shrugged, picking up the basket of food and zipping to the door. “After you,” he said, politely gesturing outside.
“Why thank you,” Amy giggled, curtsying at him before happily walking out the door, but not before yanking her frazzled crush by the arm with a blissful “Come on!” and slamming the door behind them.
”C’mon Amy, catch up!” called Sonic, jogging backwards with his hands behind his head. He stuck his tongue out at her when she wrinkled her nose in annoyance.
“You try sprinting at top speed without ending up with a food tornado inside the basket!” huffed Amy, clutching said basket as close to herself as not to jostle it too much.
“Where are we even going?” Sonic asked, still running backwards.
“I dunno, I hadn’t really thought that far!” Amy yelled back.
“Then let me do the honors!” Sonic replied, zipping behind Amy and (literally) sweeping her off her feet. She yelped as the wind slapped her face before she could register what was even going on; Sonic was speeding them both who knows where.
”Aaaaand voilá!” the blue blur exclaimed, halting over a gorgeous alpine view. A low moan drew his eyes to the girl in his arms, sporting a dizzy, disoriented face.
”I think I’m gonna be sick,” she groaned, struggling to refocus on the hedgehog above her.
“Aw c’mon, I know you’ve been through worse than that,” Sonic laughed, but still planted her on her feet and steadied her by the shoulders. “But hey—check this out!”
Amy squinted, willing her vision to clear as her gaze followed Sonic’s outstretched arm to the crystal, turquoise lake that lay a little ways away from the foot of the mountain peak that they were on. She held in a gasp, as she covered her mouth with her hand, absorbing all the natural beauty. The bright midday sun cast a light on the surface of the lake that created the most ethereal atmosphere on the mountain.
“MANNNNNN!!” Amy wailed, dropping to her knees. Sonic practically jumped up in the air, startled. “How come you always find the coolest places literally in the entire world?!” Amy complained, crossing her arms and pouting.
“I-Is that a bad thing?” Sonic approached her, peering down at her turned-away face.
“YES.” Amy’s reply dripped with ice in the most childlike anger possible. “You never save anywhere cool for me to show you,” she added with a tiny hmph!
An edelweiss popped up under her nose, its fuzzy petals tickling her. Sonic’s upside-down face followed suit, an unfairly cute grin etched on it.
“I’m sorry?” He snickered, placing it behind her ear. Amy’s pout did nothing to distract from the blooming blush on her cheeks.
“You’re so lucky I love you,” Amy groaned, crossing her arms tighter.
She missed the soft look she got from Sonic at that.
Sighing, Amy righted the fallen picnic basket and poked her nose inside. “Well, you’ll be pleased to know that the cookies survived,” she said, plucking out an only-slightly-crumbled cookie. Just as she did, it disappeared from her hands.
“Aw sweet! The good stuff!” Sonic exclaimed, shoving the whole thing in his mouth.
“Sonic! You’re such a pig!” Amy laughed, picking out another cookie. She popped it in his mouth and dusted the crumbs off his face.
“Hey I mean good baking deserves its appreciation,” Sonic shrugged, looking proud of himself.
“Well while you’re stuffing yourself with sugar, I’m going to be productive,” huffed the pink hedgehog, producing her sketchbook and a plastic baggie with an assortment of pencils inside from inside the basket. Sonic’s eyes flickered in recognition—it was that same sketchbook with of doodles of him.
“Well, well, what will Mademoiselle Artiste Amy Rose create today?” Sonic furrowed his brow in mock thought.
“You’ll just have to guess,” Amy replied haughtily, smiling smugly at him. She twirled her pencil in her hand, and flipped the book open with a flourish.
“You should draw me again,” Sonic mused, resting his weight on one arm upon Amy’s head.
“I…” Amy hesitated. She really wasn’t fond of the way she drew Sonic. He never seemed carefree enough, charming enough, cocky enough, handsome enough…
It was so vexing to not draw her Sonic just the way she percieved him.
And yes, Amy was a bit of a perfectionist, but was that so wrong?
“…nah, I wanna draw something more natural today,” she settled, masking her insecurities with a teasing grin.
“What?” Sonic exclaimed, jumping in front of her. “I’ll have you know that nature is my best friend!”
“You’ve replaced me?!” Amy raised a hand to her mouth in mock surprise. “Noooo my best friend has finally moved on, whatever shall I doooo,” she whined, playing quite the performance of devastated young lady.
Sonic snickered amusedly. “Yeah, you’d be miserable without me,” he said, his tone that of raillery.
“I would shrivel up and never see the light of day again,” Amy agreed, nodding in confirmation.
Sonic glanced over to her, still smiling. Amy glanced back.
They broke out in giggles at the absurdity of their silly antics.
“Well,” Amy said, still giggling, “I’m gonna draw the lake.” she decided.
“Nah,” Sonic quipped, yanking the book up to him, grinning wickedly at Amy’s ‘hey!’
“Sonic, give it back!” Amy exclaimed, making a grab for it. Sonic merely held it higher.
“Sure! If you can get it,” he taunted, moving it out of her grasp when she reached up again.
“You’re so mean! Give it back!” the pink hedgehog repeated, stepping on his toes to keep him still and give herself a bit more height. Sonic yanked his foot away, causing her to yelp and stumble into his chest. He grasped her with his free hand, holding her close to make sure she didn’t hurt herself. He set her upright before sticking his tongue out and sprinting away.
“Come and get it Ames!” he called, a heart-stopping smile plastered across his stupid face (in Amy’s opinion).
“Oh you’re gonna get it today!” she yelled, dashing after him. “Sonic!”
Sonic grinned when he saw her scramble in his direction, quickly picking up speed. He increased his pace ever so slightly, maintaining a few feet between them. “Now this feels familiar!” he teased, running backward.
“Is this what you wanted?” Amy’s face showed pure disbelief and incredulity. Sonic only blew a raspberry in response. “You sneaky hedgehog!” Amy laughed.
“Whuh-oh, there’s a girl chasing me!” Sonic cried, mock terror displayed on his features.
“Oh Sooooniiiiiic! Come here my darling~” Amy called behind him, starting to catch up.
“No way!” he replied, speeding up and turning towards the downhill direction of the lake.
“Aw come on! I just wanna hug you~”
“Can’t do that if you can’t catch me!”
“Don’t you wanna get maaaarriiiiied?? We should go on a date!” Amy fluttered her eyelashes at him, making kissy faces.
“Can’t make me!”
Amy snorted. “Pretty sure I did.”
“Did not.”
“Did too.”
“Did not.”
Amy huffed, half-laughing, half-exasperated, wondering if he’d ever let her catch him. They were running full tilt along the lakeshore now, the stony ground skipping under their feet.
The wind picked up.
Amy thought for a second.
”Oh Sonic~!”
Sonic glanced back at her, grinning.
Amy grinned right back.
And then—
“Can I kiss you?”
Sonic stumbled.
Hard.
That was all she needed.
She pounced on him, sending them both tumbling down the path. Amy opened the eyes that she had squeezed shut, scanning around quickly for the stolen object. Upon locating it, she snatched it up and put her hands down to push herself up. Though her hands found squishy flesh rather than rugged pebbles. Sonic groaned beneath her, a gloved hand running down his face. “Dude, that was unfair.”
Amy pushed herself to a sitting position atop his stomach, pinning him down. She walked her fingers up his chest, watching his eyes widen and ears flatten. “A-Amy?” She only smiled, moving her face almost nose to nose with his. Watching his every reaction, she planted a kiss right on the top of his nose with an exaggerated ‘mwah!’
“Don’t be so attractive and maybe I won’t want to tackle you,” she grinned with the same shit-eating energy Sonic had been displaying earlier.
“Amy…” Sonic muttered, his quills flaring up beneath him. He looked aside, avoiding her eyes. Amy dropped the book and swung her legs to align with his, resting her body atop his. Sonic only appeared more and more flustered with every movement, yet made no effort to push her off.
“Sooo, does this mean I finally caught you?” she teased, resting her face on her hands and her elbows on his chest.
“You cheated,” he deadpanned, staring at her in the eye. From this proximity, Amy noticed the evident coloration in his cheeks.
“Nah. Call it a tactical loophole,” she shrugged, twirling her quills around her finger innocently.
“You’re insufferable.”
“Learned from the best!”
Amy finally decided to show mercy on the poor hedgehog, hopping up and offering her hand to help him up too. He took it and she yanked him to his feet, dusting off his body.
“How do you manage to get this much stuck in your quills?” she complained, pulling out pebbles from the small spaces between each blade.
“You don’t?”
“No!” Amy gestured to her shoulder-length quills. “They’re not even long enough.”
“Fair,” Sonic nodded. He thought for a moment. “Have you ever thought about growing them out? You’ve had short quills as long as I’ve known you.”
“Not really,” Amy answered honestly. “I don’t use mine as weapons like you, and shorter quills are easy to manage.”
Her breath caught in her throat when Sonic reached a hand out and tentatively pushed it out of her face. She stayed as still as a statue, feeling the heat growing on her cheeks, almost certain she resembled a tomato.
“It looks good. Y’know…the short quills,” Sonic smiled softly, shyly. The redder tinge of his cheeks hadn’t fully faded yet from Amy pinning him down.
“O-Oh,” Amy’s brain blue-screened. Words were not a viable option for her anymore, apparently. “Th-Thank you!”
She looked to her side, still blushing and smiling. Sonic looked to other way, a hand behind his head.
A bit of an awkward silence, both unsure what to say.
“Um…the food’s kinda unattended,” Amy said slowly, flicking her eyes in Sonic’s direction. His own emerald eyes met them. He clicked his tongue in agreement.
“Right, it’s not gonna eat itself!” he exclaimed, stretching his limbs. He gathered Amy up into his arms and sped off to the summit again.
Sonic sat against a boulder, contentedly munching on a chili dog while Amy furiously scribbled and erased at her paper. He tried to peek over but Amy slammed the book against her chest.
“Don’t look! I’m not done!”
Sonic snorted, licking a bit of sauce off his thumb. “You always say that. I’m starting to think you’re drawing embarrassing stuff of me.”
Amy scoffed, flipping to a fresh page. “Please. If I was doing that, I’d make your head way bigger.”
She paused. Her pencil hovered, then dropped lightly onto the page. “Just can’t get it right. Your expressions are hard to pin down.” Her voice was light, but something in it just barely wavered.
Sonic blinked, studying his companion.
Amy kept her eyes on the page. “I always think it looks okay while I’m drawing, but then I look again and it just… doesn’t feel like you. Maybe I’m just not good at this yet.”
That made Sonic snort.
“Ames, what are you on?”
Amy blinked at him, startled by the sudden bite of his tone—then saw he wasn’t annoyed—more like bewilderment. Like she’d said the most backwards thing in the world.
“You’re awesome at it,” he stated like it was a fact, not a compliment. “You always have this look on your face—y’know, the one where your brain’s racing your hand? That’s the face of someone who knows what they’re doing.” He leaned back again, tapping the boulder behind him with his fingers. “Whatever you’re sketching, I bet it’s better than anything I could dream up. So quit bellyaching and lemme see it already.”
Amy smiled embarrassedly, biting her lip.
“Okay,” she murmured. She flipped the notebook in his direction so he could see. She pursed her lips and blinked, staring at him for a reaction. Quickly she continued blabbering, “I don’t usually draw action poses so like-”
“Dude are you kidding? This is sick!” Amy watched the boy’s face light up. She peered back at the drawing: both of them in the heat of battle with Amy covering badniks on ground and Sonic those up in the air. “And you totally nailed my smile!”
Sonic hopped up and hit the pose Amy had drawn, except that he was carefully holding his beloved chili dog so it wouldn’t fall. Amy giggled happily. “See?” he said. “On. point.”
”Oh Sonic, you’re always so supportive of me,” Amy mused as Sonic returned to his spot next to her. “…You’re really sweet, you know that? Always acting so nonchalant but you’re always there, cheering me on, believing in me…even when I don’t.” Amy pulled at the pages absentmindedly.
“I don’t think I say thank you enough,” she finally said, looking over at him. Sonic blinked at her for a second, then gently flicked her forehead.
“Are you kidding?” he said with an unamused expression. “Practically everything you do is a thank you—if there’s anybody I know who pours their heart out into making sure everyone feels appreciated and valued, it’s you Amy.”
“I’m not looking for compliments Sonic, I was simply saying tha-”
“Besides all I’m really doing is returning the favor anyway,” he interrupted her. “You forgetting that you’ve always been my #1 supporter?” he poked at her shoulder teasingly. This garnered another cute little blush from Amy as she looked away sheepishly.
She leaned on his shoulder as a comfortable silence settled on the two, as Amy quietly kept sketching and Sonic simply relaxed and enjoyed the serene sky and idyllic weather.
“Thanks Sonic.”
“Anytime, Ames.”
