The Snowlets: A Guide to my Favorite Olympic Mascotts

Everyone. Meet the Snowlets (or スノールッツ). They are the mascots for the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. Their names are Sukki, Nokki, Lekki and Tsukki. They represent the 4 elements, the four years in the Olympiad, the concept of wisdom (Athena and owls), coexistence with nature, peace, and friendship.

They look like this.

I am absolutely obsessed with them.

We don’t know much about their backstory as a unit other than that they live in the woods of Nagano but we know a surprising amount about them as individuals.

Sukki represents fire. He was born on a cold day when “red flames danced in the hearth of every home”. He’s strong, kind, passionate, and “moved by small things”.

Nokki represents wind. He was born on an extremely windy afternoon where “flower seeds drifted away”. He loves exploration and have many friends but can be a bit mischievous at times.

Lekki represents earth. She was born on a warm and lovely day where “horsetails sprung up everywhere, their heads swaying above the ground”. She is perceptive, calm, studious, and thoughtful.

Tsukki represents water. She was born “to the sound of snowmelt trickling down the stream”. She’s a romantic who loves singing, music, and dancing.

The first syllable of each of their names when put together (as took me way too long to notice) make up the word “Sunoletsu”, the romanized form of their name in Japanese.

They all look extremely confused or disturbed in most of their pictograms and I love them for it.

Fia Theorization Corner: Presuming that they were all born in the same year (the Olympiad thing) it seems that Sukki is the eldest (born in the middle of winter), followed Tsukki (snowmelt possibly indicating snow…melting) by Lekki (horsetails grow at the beginning of spring) and then Nokki (his bio presumably referencing dandelions, which bloom from May to June).

None of this was intentional but uh. You know.

Outside of their actual characters, thanks just want to thank the person going by “Machan” in 1980s and their website “I Love Snowlets” where they’ve posted a collection of Snowlets merchandise. Prologue

Aditha Karikalan sighed, and reread the scroll from Kundavai. 

Anna, 

There is a lot going on in Tanjai, other than the conspiracies that have become all too common. Even Sembian Patti is despairing about the behaviour of our younger brother when it comes to marriage. While I am quite sure he does feel something for my thozhi Vanathi, he refuses to admit it, under the false thought that she wants the throne. Your friend from the Vana clan only strengthened this belief with words that came out of some assumption, rather than from Vanathi herself. 

Aditha rubbed his brow, frowning. Vanthiyadevan was not the type to just assume, so was it Kundavai who had not seen the truth, or had Vanthiyadevan been fooled by something else?

I am not blaming him as much as stating a fact- but the truth of it all is that Vanathi was going to swear a vow of not sitting on the Chola throne if by some chance she married Arulmozhi. But Arulmozhi’s arrival itself put a stop to it, and none of us have breathed a word about it to him. 

This was where he had been caught in disbelief. 

The Princess had no interest in the throne of the massive Chola empire, and was ready to swear an oath for it?

He might change his mind then, but I strongly feel Vanathi deserves to be cherished by whomever she marries, be he Arulmozhi or not. Anna, I have long wished for the marriage of two of those I love the most in this world, the two who I have nurtured myself. If you could see them together, you will understand why I am so insistent. 

And this was what Kundavai still hoped from him, for him. 

Anna, I am so disappointed with everything that is going on, and feel the need to have you by my side. 

Will you please come here to Tanjai for some time? 

For this sister of yours? 

And for Arulmozhi, her hidden words seemed to say. Aditha nodded to himself, realizing that maybe his presence at Tanjai would help not just his siblings, but also his parents.

He smiled softly, feeling his sister’s affection fill him. 

It was time. 

Time to return home.

Kundavai was restless, waiting for a scroll from her elder brother. 

Vanathi was seated by her side, completely silent, sending yearning looks still at Arulmozhi, who had his sparkle whenever he looked at Vanathi, though he and Vanthiyadevan seemed to be spending a lot of time with Poonkuzhali. 

Maybe she should speak to Periya Velar about hosting a Svayamvara for Vanathi… that may actually work. And if her hope was right, Aditha Anna will be in Tanjai soon, and he would convince Arulmozhi, something only he was capable of in the manner that was required. 

“Akka? Akka?”

She looked at Arulmozhi, who was looking at her concerned. She shook her head and smiled at him, before turning to Vanathi, “Vaa, kanne. Let us go to our boat. I want to hear you sing for me again.”

“Akka…”

Vanathi said softly. 

“Come. I have missed your nightingale voice,” Kundavai insisted. “It is my fortune that you sing as often as you do for me. I want to hear more.”

“Thangal kattalai, Akka, ( As you wish, akka)” Vanathi said, making to stand as Kundavai also did, when a guard came running in. 

Everyone’s eyes turned to the guard, questioning expressions adorned. 

“Ilaya Piratti, Ilavarase, Yuvarajar Aditha Karikalan Tanjai nokki vandhuvittar (The crown Prince has almost reached Tanjai). He will be here soon, with his large army.”

Kundavai could not help but smile widely when she heard those words. She grabbed Vanathi in her arms and twirled with her, once the guard left. Vanathi laughed in surprise, making Kundavai smile wider. 

“Kanne, I told you Anna will come, did I not?”

“You did, Akka,” Vanathi replied, her smile soft and sweet, like it often was when trained on Kundavai. 

“Now I can finally introduce you to him. Come come. Let us go prepare. Thambi, you too should prepare, along with the Vana warrior.”

Kundavai swept out, holding Vanathi’s hand and dragging her quickly, leaving an extremely stupefied Arulmozhi, who felt confusion regarding Kundavai’s announcement.

Childlike drawings of snow owls, or a CGI drop of steel? Fun fact: the Olympic Games represented by each of these mascots were the third time the host countries hosted the Olympics!

THE SNOWLETS

The snow owls Sukki, Nokki, Lekki and Tsukki, also known as the "Snowlets", were the mascots of the Nagano 1998 Winter Olympic Games. Owls are revered the world over as having the "wisdom of the forest"; In Greek mythology, the owl is associated with Athena, the goddess of wisdom. The "Snow" in the name refers to Winter, which is the season in which the Games are played. and "Lets" refers to "Let's", which is an invitation to join the celebration of the Games. The snow owls represented the four elements: Sukki (fire), Nokki (air), Lekki (earth) and Tsukki (water). The choice of four mascots instead of one has to do with the period between one Olympics and another, which is four years.

WENLOCK

Wenlock was the mascot of the London 2012 Olympic Games. According to the story idealized by the children's writer Michael Morpurgo, it represents a drop of steel used in the construction of the Olympic Stadium. The name has to do with Much Wenlock, a place visited in 1984 by the Baron de Coubertin, who would have attended a competition there that inspired him to create the Olympics of the Modern Era.

What’s your advice for travelling on your own???

This is probably going to be a long one, so I apologize in advance 😅 Here's some advice that has helped me on my solo trips to Korea and Japan:

• Do research on where you're going. See what's allowed in the country (especially if you're bringing medications). Read up on other people's travel experiences in that country. Know what kind of transportation you'll need to use there and how to access it (trains, buses, taxis, rental cars). Make sure you have a bit of an idea of what to expect when you get there, so culture shock won't hit you hard.

• Have foreign currency *before* you leave. Chances are you'll need it as soon as you land at your destination.

• Make sure you have a power adapter/wall charger in case they have different outlets. A back up phone charger and pocket wifi is also a must!

• Find points of interest that you might enjoy visiting and make a private Google map with all those places marked. Then if you're in an area that happens to have a lot of your interests in it, you can tackle them all at once. This was my map for Tokyo! I made two separate lists; one for places I wanted to visit, and one for restaurants I wanted to try.

Unfortunately I didn't get to visit all of these because my trip was only 5 days. But it gave me a good idea of areas I could go to hit multiple points of interest!

• Make sure all your legal documents are valid. Passports, visas, licenses, etc. Make sure you know what documents you need to enter that country. Also bring a photocopy of those documents just in case something happens to the original.

• Get travel insurance. It's cheap and easy to get. And if something goes wrong, you'll be completely covered to be flown back home.

• Do what you can to keep yourself safe. You can buy personal safety items or read up on self defensive measures to take while traveling. I have this little siren doorstop, so if anyone tries to come into my hotel room, it not only blocks the door from opening but also emits a 120db siren to scare anyone off.

And it works *very well*. I nearly deafened myself when testing it XD

• Always be alert and aware of your surroundings. Tourists are easy targets for pickpockets because we're so distracted by everything (especially in big, tourist heavy cities).

• Never tell anyone that you're traveling alone. Book your hotel room for 2 people (its the same price as single rooms anyway). And give your hotel info to someone back home that you trust so they can know where you'll be.

• Trust your gut instinct too. If you're getting bad vibes off someone, just walk away and distance yourself from them.

• Don't be afraid to try new things! New foods, music, dancing, shows, festivals, etc. Just get out there and see things you've never seen before!

• This is kinda a personal preference one, but *avoid* tourist spots. So many people line up to take the same pics in the same tourist trap locations, waiting hours just for nothing. Instead, speak to locals and do things they recommend! Or just wander around and see what you stumble across. Touristy areas tend to have more expensive prices for everything anyway, so you'll save money going elsewhere! XD

• Allow your plans to change based on what you personally feel like doing in that moment. Don't force yourself to stick to a travel itinerary.

• Bring snacks just in case your tum craves something familiar. I usually stick to granola bars or Biscoffs since they last a while.

• If you're going somewhere that has a different language, learn the basics in that language. Knowing how to say "hello", "yes", "no", and "thank you" will help you so much! And locals tend to love seeing tourists put an effort into trying to communicate with them in their language.

• Also be patient. There will be times when there will be confusion between you and other people. That's just what happens when two different cultures meet. But don't get mad. Try calmly working thru the confusion and see if you can figure something out.

• On that same note, BE KIND. You are a guest in someone else's home. You have no right to demand things to be a specific way. Respect their rules, even if it doesn't make sense to you. Be grateful that you have this amazing opportunity that so many others may never have.

Solo traveling can be pretty intimidating. But if you plan and prepare everything well before you leave, your trip will be so much more enjoyable!
