✨RECENT ANIME REVIEW✨

⚔NORAGAMI⚔

| don't actually feel like I have an incredible amount to say about Noragami, but it is the most recent anime that I've finished. So, I figured that I'd give a review on it next!

Season 1 unfortunately wasn't my favorite, but I knew that people talked about how good this show was. So I made sure to watch all the way til the end in order to give it a full chance for those who love this show.💙 As I started watching, I was slowly drawn to Yuki first - such a sweet, young kid who really was trying to figure himself out after realizing what he had become. It was an interesting story with his and Yato's relationship - but I enjoyed his development nonetheless. However, the main characters were not what drew me into this show. It was a side character that isn't seen much until season 2.👀

Kazuma was by far my favorite character of this show and the reason why I kept going. ❗SPOILERS AHEAD❗ When we first meet Kazuma🌸, we find out that he's the right-hand man of the woman who is single-handedly (with many regalia) trying to kill Yato.💀 As we get to hear bits and pieces of her story in the beginning, I couldn't help but wonder if she was actually justified. However, Kazuma immediately seems to take interest in Yuki and Yato against Bishimon (his god) and the other regalia under her command. However, never does it feel like he has malicious intent towards his god and neither does it feel like he has any ill intent towards Yato - which was what immediately drew me in. He was a gray character, almost appearing to refuse to stand on either side. Later on, when Yuki nearly befalls as a phantom due to "stinging"🐝 Yato many times, Kazuma is called upon to help in a ritual in order to "cleanse/ bear witness" to Yuki. At first, he appears to think better of it, but he has a kind heart and goes to help regardless. This again spoke to me because he was willingly helping his god's "rival" during a time that he could have just let Yato die.

Needless to say, the second half of Season 2 is my favorite. 🧡 It focuses quite a bit on Bishimon - and thus Kazuma. After episode 1 or 2 of Season 2, 1 found myself crying over & over & over again for these characters😭. I mourned for each of them as I watched so many things slip through their fingers as the god in charge was grasping at sand that she could no longer hold than control. The whole first half/arc of that season was BEYOND what I could have imagined & I've already thought about watching it all over again. Without giving too much away, the things I learned about Kazuma throughout that arc made me fall in love with him so much as a character and I found myself always asking, "when will I see him again?"🌸 He's so much I could have imagined and more than what I would deserve out of a character. Bishimon does not deserve to have someone as pure and loyal as him to be her right-hand man; in fact...! wouldn't imagine that anyone would.

The second half of Season 2 was also significantly better than Season 1, in my opinion. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I LOVED seeing the character development for Yato in that arc. 💙 I had already come to love Kazuma and Yuki at that point, and the end of Season 2 was when I finally started loving Yato for the character that he was as well. I'm a bit sad that it took as long as it did for me to enjoy the main character, but I am very excited to see what comes of him and his newfound destiny.

Overall, I enjoyed the show & would likely watch it again!😊💖

Noragami Review

This month, as part of YAMA’s anime exchange, I was assigned Noragami. Its a series that I remember seeing a lot of back in middle school, probably because that’s when it came out. Hell, I bet a few people like me even remember that math teacher who put one of the anime’s characters in a math problem! Still, when I was told I’d be watching this series, I was hopeful. I didn’t know much, but I had a feeling I was going to like it. After watching all 12 episodes, though, I can say the result isn’t exactly what I’d hoped.

Noragami is a short anime following a highschool girl named Hiyori, who gains the ability to separate from her body after saving a minor god from getting hit by a truck. Their fates become entwined, as she tags along with the god on his various jobs, learning about the conflicts he faces and the monsters he fights. Along the way, they are joined by a third friend, Yukine, who acts as the god Yato’s living weapon. Together, the three help out wayward people and fight Phantoms, evil creatures that can influence humans in negative ways. 

What stands out the most about this series is the characters themselves, and the dynamic they share. Its a rare case of a main trio, who are all given equal screentime and storylines. We’ve certainly come a long way from shows like Naruto, as it seems that finally, girls are just as important as boys. Hiyori, the half-Phantom highschooler, is given a lot more respect than I expected going into this series. Most shonen anime rely on a virgin-whore dichotomy to characterize their women, dis-allowing them from being anything more than love interests or side characters. Here, though, there’s quite a lot of depth put into the female lead, as well as other female characters. Hiyori isn’t just a girly girl whose only personality traits are liking boys and being a push-over. She actually helps her friends a lot, and can hold her own in a fight. This is quite refreshing, and as a woman, I really appreciate seeing it.

Hiyori’s story is one that I wish was spent more time on, though. When we first meet her, she’s an ordinary highschool student, one with a pair of friends and a passion for pro wrestling. After meeting Yato, though, Hiyori’s regular life is abandoned, barely shown despite her still living it. It would’ve been nice to see how her life has to change now that she is involved with gods and phantoms. Many times in the series, Hiyori feels like Yato’s groupie, just tagging along on his adventures and commentating on whatever she sees. Sure, having her as an audience stand-in is a great way to acclimate the audience to all the ins and outs of this world, but more often than not, Hiyori remains an outsider looking in, standing back as Yato and Yukine handle enemies. 

What holes in the story Hiyori leaves, Yato and Yukine pick up the slack for. Those two are wildly entertaining, to the point where I wish they were in a different, longer series. Yato, in particular, is hilarious. The perfect mix of confident and respectful, Yato is a perfect fit for the role of a minor god who nobody cares about. He refuses to be one-note, always revealing new things about himself in each episode. One second he’s an expert on cleaning tiles, the next he’s a sketch artist. His dramatic fantasies of fame and fortune are equally entertaining, giving audiences a view of how he sees himself while also emphasizing how un-cool he is now. He’s a character with clear goals, and isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty if it means getting one step closer to his shrine.

However, this series wasn’t exactly what I had hoped going into it. What struck me as odd immediately was how short it is. Only 12 episodes? After watching it all, its clear that time is the most glaring issue with this series. It quickly rushes past the moments of characters getting to know each other and discovering their world, and right to action. Hiyori, Yato, and Yukine become friends so quickly, that it feels jarring to see them all buddy-buddy when they’ve basically just met.

This goes double for character arcs, like Yukine’s. Yukine’s arc is all about him grappling with his own death, and having to live outside of human society as Yato’s assistant. However, this is basically only conveyed through his occasional bad behavior, such as stealing money that was supposed to be donated, or stealing a skateboard. The series tries to convey that he acts out because he feels alone, but it waits until it’s nearly over to explain this. His actions up until episode 10 could easily be explained as being teenage angst, but only when he smashes the windows of a highschool in a fit of rage does it become clear that it is something deeper. His inner turmoil is far more complicated than just being a ‘bad kid’, so it would’ve been nice to see it discussed more than just near the end. 

Overall, Noragami isn’t terrible. The animation is good, at times even really pretty. The characters are very entertaining, and enjoyable to watch interact. However, the show’s short length is made more detrimental by it’s lack of focus, choosing to introduce dozens of side characters instead of spend more quality time with the ones that are already there. The opening is fantastic, if you were curious. Its a nice anime, and I’m sure other people enjoy it a lot more than I did, but I just wish it was longer. Then, hopefully, the issues it has would’ve been solved.

just finished vol 1 of noragami and idk how I feel about it… I definitely enjoyed some parts and some parts just fell flat. I think I’ll read vol 2 before I come up with an opinion

1. favorite colors: I don't really have a favourite colour? Like, yeah, I lean towards purples, blues and greens, but clothing wise, I end up living in monochromes. Makes my life easier.

2. favorite flavors: I love salty foods (except liquorice, ew), sweet with a sour tang, and I'm starting to appreciate spicy food again. I went off it for a while, which is weird.

3. favorite genres: Mostly fantasy, with a little bit of sci-fi and the faintest tinge of horror? I'm not great with it, I still get nightmares 😅 I'll also indulge in a bit of slice of life every now and then.

4. favorite music: Spotify describes my main playlist as angry, various kinds of rock, metal and instrumentals 😂 I mean, it's not wrong, but does it have to call me out like that?

5. favorite movies: Recently, it's been the John Wick movies, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (it was funny), Venom, Men In Black (it was a childhood favourite), Bo Burnham's Inside (couldn't stop laughing!), and probably a lot more, but it's late and I'm blanking.

6. favorite series: At the moment, it's The Legend of Vox Machina. I'm not really binging anything else.

7. last song: Waste My Time - Scandroid

8. last series: See above, I've been wasting my own time with Stardew Valley.

9. last movie: In theaters, it was The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. I totally forgot about that!

10. currently reading: Vox Machina Origins: Volume 1 and Noragami volume 26. Eagerly awaiting 27!

11. currently watching: Nothing right now, I'm winding down for the night.

12. currently working on: This meme? Nah, I'm reviewing notes from Saturday's D&D session, fixing spelling errors and such. I'm also somewhat planning out RP stuff, and I have some rewrites to do when I can snag some time to myself, yeesh.

Review: The Morose Mononokean

overview: Angry exorcist and cheerful assistant help yokai.

I went into this anime not really expecting much which is why i think i ended up really liking it and being disappointed to find the smallish fanbase it had.

The main characters, Ashiya and Abeno aren't all that unique from a character point of view, but I found myself getting really attached to them. I really enjoyed watching their relationship grow as it was a classic enemies to friends type of thing.

One of my favourite parts of the whole series was how vivid the art style is, especially with the underworld. The character designs were also really refreshing and it was hard to find many dull characters.

I ended up reading the manga as well and was sad to see that the main plot really takes off after season 2, I hope there will be a season 3.

The manga is great too and I would recommend you read it after the anime as well. It gets slightly darker and more serious, as you can tell from the end of season 2.

I'd recommend it if you enjoy any yokai/supernatural anime like kamisama hajimemashita, natsume yuujinchou or xxxholic.

end note: Some people were disappointed by it calling it a poor love child of noragami/hoozuki no reitetsu but I think overall it's a sweet anime and a really fun watch. It's not very plot heavy but it makes up for it with it's likeable characters and fun artstyle/world.

𝐅𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐂𝐎𝐋𝐎𝐑𝐒 : Dark Teal, followed immediately by black. 𝐅𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐅𝐋𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐑𝐒 : Sweet! I love sweet things. Too sweet for too long can make me nauseous though... So as a close runner up I love adding spicy flavors to my food. Salty is a solid third place though. 𝐅𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐑𝐄𝐒 : Fantasy, romance, fanfiction- I consider that last one a genre because it's built off of whatever I'm seeking out, plus there's a specific feel to reading fanfiction vs reading the original. There's just something special. 𝐅𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐂 : Ooh, this one is hard. I love about anything. Lately I've been leaning into pop and alternative music, but... Really, it's just a matter of me knowing the lyrics, or the bounce of the melody hitting just right. I always find myself surprised if I hear a new song and it quickly becomes a favorite. 𝐅𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐌𝐎𝐕𝐈𝐄𝐒 : I'm not much of a movie person. Unfortunately. I do enjoy Lord of the Rings movie series though, so I guess that's something? Because technically I'm reading a lot of things- But for this month- I've only really "read" Noragami in order to start capping icons for King. 𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐋𝐘 𝐖𝐀𝐓𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆 : Jujutsu Kaisen, One Piece, rewatching FMAB to show my wife this weekend... Honestly, too many things, haha. I once again forgot to write a journal yesterday. But this time it was because it was 3am and I was to tired.

I watched 20 episodes of anime yesterday, which is a lot. I finished Noragami Aragato and it's ovas also watched the entire She and Her Cat -Everything Flows, She and Her Cat: Their Standing Points, ROAD OF NARUTO. I watched single episode of Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, two episodes of The Apothecary Diaries, two episodes of Inuyasha and two episodes of Pokemon Horizons. I had a lot of fun with watching this much of anime. I also plan on writing some reviews about them, or at least for sure a review of Noragami Aragoto because it was great and I have a lot of thoughts regarding it.

✨NEW ANIME REVIEW✨

🐺Sirius the Jaeger🐺

I'm not even going to lie to any of you right now - I watched this because Khoi Dao is the voice of the main character, Yuliy.

I don't really have too much to say on this show thus far. Starting out the season, the show opened many questions about what are Jaegers? What does it mean by Yuliy is a Sirius? How has this group banded together? What's Willard to Yuliy? And many more questions. However, this show doesn't really answer too many of those opening questions and very quickly feels like it pushes away from what the first episode felt like it was setting up. This show moves very quickly and to an extent left me with more questions than answers. It's not the worst show I've ever seen by any means, but it was one that really left me much to desire in the way of a good show. I like most of the characters: Fallon, Yuily, Willard, Mikhail; but the plot line just didn't quite live up to any hype for me. Plus, at the end of the season - some decisions were made that I'm not sure I particularly enjoyed. The end of the season set up Season 2 in a much different way that I had hoped or predicted, and not necessarily in a good way.

The highlight of this show is Episode 7 with a scene between Yuliy and Willard. It was something that came out of left-field, but I appreciated it none-the-less. It really let me appreciate both characters and their dynamic a little bit more before the end of the season.

Personally, I hope this gets a Season 2 and that Season 2 is kinda like Noragami's Season 2; where it blows Season 1 out of the water and answers some questions that were left open at the end of Season 1.

Again, this isn't a bad anime, but it certainly isn't one of my favorites😞
