S69-31742 was West Point graduate & USAF test pilot Michael Collins’ third official NASA portrait. In October 1963, Michael Collins was among ‘ The Fourteen “ new fighter pilots selected as NASA astronauts as part of Group 3. In July 1966, Collins flew onboard Gemini X mission, performing two spacealks and the first NASA astronaut to wear a wristwatch, his NASA-issued Omega Speedmaster, underneath a spacesuit. More interesting, is the fact pointed out by Rolexmagazine, that Apollo 11 Command Module Pilot Michael Collins was wearing his personal Rolex wristwatch in this White Space Suit portrait. Looking closely, the turnable bezel of his Rolex Turn-O-Graph pilot watch is just visible above his hand. Since 1964, Michael Collins, who usually wore his watch on the righthand wrist, often wore his Rolex Turn-O-Graph during Gemini & Apollo training. May 1969, Apollo 10 was the final dress rehearsal for the Apollo 11 Moon landing. All three astronauts Eugene A. Cernan (LMP), John W. Young (CMP) and Thomas P. Stafford (Commander) already had flown during Gemini. The CSM was named “ Charlie Brown “ and the Lunar Module “ Snoopy “ after cartoon characters by Charles Schulz. The Lunar Module flown by Stafford and Cernan descend to just 14.4 kilometers above the lunar surface. Snoopy’s ascent stage was left leaving lunar orbit and it remains the only once-crewed spacecraft still in outer space without a crew tracked by astronomical observatories. However the planned landing in the Fra Mauro highlands, a region composed of ejecta from the impact that formed Mare Imbrium, was never to be. Lovell was the first to make 4 spaceflight missions and the first to fly twice to the Moon... June 22, 1967 testpilot William Knight checked out X-15 A2 USAF testpilot William “Pete” Knight made 16 research flights with the North American X-15 hypersonic rocket-powered aircraft. Although all X-15 pilots received an Accutron Astronaut GMT pilot watch, Knight wore his personal Rolex GMT-master Pepsi on at least two flights. October 3, 1967, Flight 188 was flown with the modified crash-damaged aircraft, which got a longer body and 2 drop tanks. Covered in a white ablative heatshield, Knight flew the craft to Mach 6.7 speed record of the program. October 17, 1967, Flight 190 was flown with aircraft 66672 and Knight reached an altitude of 85 kilometers, reaching over 50 miles qualified him as an astronaut according USAF’s definition of the space boundary... in this way Pete Knight wore the first Rolex GMT-master pilot watch in “space”.
