Happy Deathday George Duke of Clarence 🕯

On this day 543 years ago George Plantagenet Duke of Clarence was executed by being drowned in a barrel of Malmsey wine. I have seen some dispute this but none of their arguments seem rooted in anything deeper than ‘it’s just too bizarre’, ‘it wasn’t the done thing’ - certainly nothing with the persuasive force to overturn three contemporary accounts. Decapitated he certainly was not; when the body was exhumed the neck vertebrea were attached.

I was I initially planing on posting a theory I made about his intentions regarding Burgundy circa February 1477 and how popular history is largely wrong as it presumes some things which I have yet to find sources for and gets the chronology wrong. It got lost when I changed phones. I’ll only rewrite it if someone asks me to tbf, otherwise... I hope you appreciate this odd assortment of b&w dramatic victorian artpieces I’ve found + this unknown artists’ rendition of the execution + this interesting page from the Tewksbury Abbey annals which shows us some of the arms Clarence (and apparently his son) took up in later life - the ragged staff being one of them).

In exchange have this political poem written during the treason proceedings, commemorating a moment of triumph as opposed to one of disgrace:

He is an excellent prynce certaynly.
