“The darker you are, the harder it is”- Bessie Delaney, Having Our Say. I must admit that there is much truth to this. Being a darker skinned male of a larger stature, I can come off intimidating to those around me. I wondered if it was my size at times but I found my color played a role as well. I have been underestimated, counted out, looked over and even judged before physical encounter by many people. I would often find myself having to code switch to make others comfortable while putting myself in a place of discomfort knowing that I was judged unfairly. Once they have learned of my ability, I now a threat and disregarded for being simply me. Yet, I still keep moving forward. Do I always see the stairs before me? No, but I still take everything I’ve learned and experienced to make me a better, authentic person. I am even considered that person who should always understand and be peaceful at all times when I actually want to stoop to their level. Yet, I keep it moving leaving it where I’ve found it. Professionally, I am normally counted out when I do the best job I can. I often wonder if I am the “face” they are looking for or should I be that person in the background who is praised for his teamwork and never really introduced to as being an intricate part of the team, contributing my talents as well. From a relationship standpoint, I seem to not fit the standards their either. I am usually put in the forgotten pile when I remember the one I am interested in. I worked myself harder to be accepted and found myself forgetting to work this hard for myself to accept myself. I can’t let the world’s standards determine my value but it is a hard battle to fight and sometimes can take its toll. I’m human and not a part of a fantasy or vision to be used at others’ disposal. The art of saying, “No” has become easier over time.
