Today (July 25, 2023), on what would have been Emmett Till’s 82nd birthday, President Joe Biden signed a proclamation to establish the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument honoring Till and his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley. In 1955, Emmett was 14 when he was kidnapped, tortured and murdered because a white woman accused him of “inappropriately interacting" with her.

Reposted from @savingplaces Meet our nation’s newest national monument, the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument... which includes:
Tumblr media
- Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ (Chicago, Illinois), founded in 1916. Following Mamie Till Mobley’s decision to “let the world see what I’ve seen,” an estimated 100,000 people filed past Emmett’s casket over three days in September 1955.
Tumblr media
- Tallahatchie County Courthouse (Sumner, Mississippi), the site of the September 1955 trial of J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant for Emmett Till’s murder. The building was restored to its 1955 condition and the Emmett Till Interpretive Center opened across the street to provide interpretation.
Tumblr media
- Graball Landing on the banks of the Tallahatchie River in Mississippi, the site where Emmett Till’s body was found.
This new national monument is an opportunity for the nation to remember the life and legacy of 14-year-old Emmett Till and his mother, Mamie Till Mobley, for catalyzing the American #CivilRightsMovement.
“Imbued in these now permanently protected buildings and landscapes are the unspeakable crimes of racial violence, and the tireless strength of Mamie Till Mobley who harnessed her grief in pursuit of #socialjustice. Through historic preservation, this multiracial coalition of partners will continue its work to uplift this new national monument and secure the resources and investment needed to ensure the site's future.”
- Brent Leggs, Executive Director, African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund

🌼 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐓𝐨 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐒𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 It’s predicted that outdoor spaces and parks will experience an influx of visitors over the next few months, as the weather gets warmer. This includes a lot of ill-prepared and inexperienced hikers, as well as folks who don’t give a crap about the “panorama”. Certain US cities and states are slowly starting to open back up, but that doesn’t mean we throw caution to the wind and immediately go “back to normal”. Here are just a few ways we can all respectfully (and safely) get out into nature! ➖Try to choose locations closer to home and, if you can, go early in the morning or on a weekday to avoid crowds. If that’s not possible, skip the popular spots and pick somewhere off the beaten path. ➖Read up on the parks or campgrounds alerts in regards to safety and sanitizing protocols. Different places have different rules and as things open up, regulations will change. Make sure you have the most up to date information! ➖Bring your mask and wear it in crowded or indoor areas, and as you pass people on trails. Social distance wherever possible. ➖Pack your hand sanitizer (and disinfecting wipes if you’re going camping or visiting public parks). I use the wipes on my phone, some of my gear, and sometimes on our truck’s handles/steering wheel/etc. ➖Watch your footing on certain trails and don’t attempt anything that looks dangerous. Many hospitals are still at capacity, and injuries are unfortunately very common in a lot of places now. Research the area beforehand so you know about the terrain and precautions to take! ➖If you can’t get outdoors, consider donating to organizations like @blackoutside_inc or @npcapics. Anything that helps give outdoor experiences to minority youth or that helps preserve our parks goes a long way. 🥾 What tips do YOU have about getting outdoors during the panorama? Let’s hear em! #LNT #getoutdoors #northtablemountain 📍: Mechoopda Maidu land (at North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNTNBInghiB/?igshid=njzw098fmtst

While many of us are home, now is a great time to reflect on past trips and give thought to what our futures might look like – while also envisioning the future of our national parks.
While what goes into your capsule will depend on you or your family, we suggest including some of the below park-inspired items. Snap photos of your time capsule in progress and tag us [Twitter: @NPCA / Instagram: @npcapics / Facebook: Post in our Protect Our Parks group] so we can share on our channels!

Desert five-spot, desert paintbrush, desert mariposa lily and beaver-tail cactus blooms, as well as Joshua Trees and Yuccas are among the species that are in full #bloomstagram in parks including @deathvalleynps, Mojave National Preserve, and @joshuatreenps. The blooms won’t last long, so #optoutside and get out to your desert national parks! 🌼

Repost from #talltreesofportland artist @spectralgardens ・・・ The one thing that hurts the most in this Trumpmerica is the total disregard and desired destruction of National Parks and public lands. I can't help but think of all the creatures that thrive and survive in those spaces. If you feel the same please follow @npcapics @alt.national_park_service and @altnatparkser. These accounts are not only beautiful but they will help keep you informed as to what bills and resolutions are being introduced and passed. They also tell you ways to TAKE ACTION. H.J. Resolution 69 recently passed and is one of the most heartbreaking things for the wildlife refuges in Alaska. This type of thinking and disregard for life seems pure evil. @npcapics just posted an action today to help conserve Buffalo National River in Arkansas. We must do everything we can to fight for these beautiful creatures because once they are gone, they are gone forever. What a sad future that would be. 💔 #endangered #charcoal #illustration #stopextinction #wildlife #protectnature #takeaction

We live in a breathtaking state. #grateful #Repost @arizonahighways with @repostapp ・・・ On this date in 1919, the Grand Canyon was named a national park. It was first afforded federal protection in 1893 as a Forest Reserve. Later, it was designated a National Monument. In addition to being considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world, the Canyon was named a World Heritage Site in 1979. Last year, more than 6 million people visited the park. By comparison, 44,173 people passed through the gate in 1919. Happy 98th, GCNP. ‪There they are! Hiking sticks with medallions from all of the national parks (both can be purchased at the NPS Visitor Centers.) ‬I can't believe they all fit!! Something we'll cherish forever along with the memories. Recap: Our quest was to explore and document all 59 of America's national parks during the centennial anniversary of the U.S. National Park Service in 2016. We lived in an Airstream trailer, and road tripped across more than 45,000 miles of land while documenting the project entirely with Fujifilm camera equipment (+ some #iphone6splus shots.) Our aim was to give every park equal treatment -- the big dogs and the least visited alike -- to expose how magnificent each park is in its own distinct way while fostering awareness and support of America's finest national treasures. The saga didn't end there of course, and to see how the aftermath of our project unfolded, please continue to follow my feed (I promise, there's plenty of beautiful wilderness in there!) • Next up for us: @jonathan_irish and I are making a book!! Discounted price for pre-orders. Link in my bio and on our website: http://ift.tt/2wO2VE0 • Please follow and support these organizations who protect and preserve one of the greatest assets on Earth for the citizens of the WORLD to enjoy: the U.S. National Parks! @usinterior @nationalparkservice @goparks @npcapics @nationalparktrust @nature_org @wildernesssociety @sierraclub Warmest thanks to the following companies and organizations, to each of which we owe our deepest gratitude for helping us bring this project to life: @fujifilmUS @fujifilmx_us @fujifilm_instax_northamerica @airstream_inc @natgeo @natgeotravel @visitmontana @visitcolorado @southdakota @travelnevada @americansamoatravel And finally to everyone who has cheered us on with nothing but awesomeness since our first project post on @Instagram. You have no idea how every act of engagement fueled us during tough moments and triumphant ones as well. You were with us throughout our entire journey, along every trail, and Jonathan and I dedicate this project to all of you. THANK YOU!! ❤️🌎🇺🇸 http://ift.tt/2vor9Bh
