Exploring the Ice King (4)

Here's at last the final part of this series! I wanted to release this post for the Day of the Kings, but I was too busy IRL... So it's today instead. After going 'round and 'round the elephant in the room, we finally get to touch the heart and core of Ice King: the inspirations of the monarch of ice and snow, and the ancestors of a winter sorcerer!

The most common and widespread trivia you will find around the Internet is that the Ice King seems to have been mainly influenced by the character of the "Winter Warlock" from the Rankin/Bass "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town". Indeed, we find the same lushious beard, pointy features, weird crown, penguin companion, ice-magic and antagonistic role

A similar evil ice sorcerer appeared in "Ruldoph and Frosty's Christmas in July", the wizard Winterbolt - whose name reminds of Ice King's "ice lightning"

The world of Rankin/Bass animations seems to have had a certain influence over Adventure Time. The duo formed by the Heat Miser and Snow Miser can have a vague echo in the duality of the Ice King and Flame King....

... While the huge Snow realm ruled by Father Winter in Rankin/Bass' "Jack Frost" reminds one of the various ice and snow creatures of Ice King's empty domain:

However there is a MUCH more direct inspiration to be listed... An animated movie that clearly was one of the roots of Adventure Time. 1971's The Point, about a boy with a strange hat and his dog going on an adventure... And where the king of the land looks like this:

I don't think I need to make anymore explanations - outside of mentionning that 1971's The Point was actually the animated adaptation of a musical album, and that the starting point of the writing of the story was someone's acid trip... Literaly. Both elements which also echo a LOT with Adventure Time's own style and uniqueness. Though the king in this version was a shy, timid, benevolent and magic-less ruler - a far cry from AT more dangerous and unstable ice-wizard.

Speaking of direct inspirations for Adventure Time, it has never been a secret that 1977's "Wizards" had been one of the main sources of Adventure Time's world. An earth returned to a world of fantasy, magic and fairies after a nuclear war, with a half-skeletal evil wizard leading armies of mutants and robots against the excentric, quirky and weird forces of "good"... The homage is neat and clear.

Why am I speaking of this however? No Ice King ancestor seems to be hiding there... Well, I suggest you take a look at another one of Ralph Bakshi's animated fantasy movies... No, not the animated "Lord of the Rings" movie. But 1983's "Fire and Ice". An animated collaboration with Frank Frazetta himself, about bluish-skinned, white-haired ice-rulers using snow magic to invade a fantasy land and capture a princess, only for a brave, sword-wielding blond hero to have to rescue her... While he is much more youthful, sexy and sane than Ice King, prince Nekron IS definitively one of the characters' ancestors.

The presence of an ice queen ruling alongside Nekron makes me think back on a specific topic... In fantasy, the role of sorcerous evil lords with powers and affinity for ice, snow and the cold is traditionally taken by a woman. Probably as a remnant of the popularity of Andersen's Snow Queen fairytale:

To mention a few famous examples, you have the White Witch of Narnia (which was C.S. Lewis taking Andersen's Snow Queen and fusing her with Lilith and She-who-must-be-obeyed):

Or Tad Williams' Utuk'ku, Queen of the Norns (the literary ancestors of Game of Thrones' White Walkers, Martin literaly ripped them off):

And Warhammer's Tzarina Katarin, first of the ice-witches of Kislev

Adventure Time did have some female characters wielding the powers of the ice - from the Ice Queen to Patience St. Prim, but it stayed mainly focused on the snow magic being male-owned (Ice King, Ice Finn, Evergreen, and all the recent alternates like the Winter King)...

... And by stayed quite "male-focused", Adventure Time echoes once more an ancient mythical archetype, a legendary character whose many incarnations go from Old Father Winter of England to Ded Moroz (Grandfather Frost) of Russia, passing by Jack Frost and Boreas...

I could have talked about the large presence of ice spirits, spells and entities within the world of "Dungeons and Dragons" but this post is getting way too long, so, to conclude, I will also point out something many have noticed before - how a blue-skinned man-freak freezing everything over a tragic love story is strongly reminiscent of Batman's Mr. Freeze

The Robot from Enter the Gungeon and The Robot from Nuclear Throne!

Don't worry devs, coming up with names are hard, I understand.

The Robot Body Scale ranges from 1 to 10 and reflects how happy I, Zoey Gauntletqueen, would be for a robot body to be my body. 5 is the base, being the same as my current human body. It does not reflect my opinion on the design as a whole.

Gungeon's Robot has a cute oldschool pc design, and a lil arm canon! Can't say much else about it though. It doesnt' look particularly tough, it does look small, the colors aren't really my style.

Nuclear Throne's Robot Has a unique design as a lil spiderbot, which is fun! If I'm gonna be some lil robo creature thingy I sure would like to be able scitter and scuttle :> There's still a means to hold and operate objects, that's important! It also does this which is a big plus

Side Order thoughts (major spoilers if you haven't cleared the tower yet)

I think it's really funny that everyone thought Agent 4 was involved but no it's just some guy (though maybe they are. Unlikely since it's mentioned that random Inkfish got involved but again, I only cleared the tower once AND I'M GOING AGAIN PUT ME BACK IN THERE COACH). I remember hearing someone say that maybe the dummy robot from the lobby is involved and hey! They were not wrong, I guess??

Anyways maybe it's recency bias but I think I heavily prefer SO over OE, 1 because I love order 2 I love LOVE the design of this expansion and 3 the character interactions are wayyyy more common and great to read. Plus I think I like roguelike games more. Kinda wish the upgrades were a little more substantial like in Nuclear Throne's but the ink recovery while splatting enemies is one of my favorites.

Also I really like that the stages are titled like name_name.floor. Files are supposed to have _ or - in the place of a space, since I think files act kind of wonky when spaces are allowed (and that back then, spaces weren't allowed to be used to name files from what I heard? I don't know, this is what I heard from my Graphics class). Plus you should use them in work places in general, like for sending files to clients/co-workers and etc. to make it easy to search for, especially when there's already a naming system like projectname_date_clientname or something.

Updated list of projects

A couple weeks or so ago I posted a list of fan projects I want to post about on here, but it was incomplete, so I’m gonna finish it now in a more official-looking format. Keep in mind that I will likely never be able to make some of these, especially the ones intended to be shows, considering I have a few projects that are more important to me that I’d prefer to focus on. But anyway, continue reading for the list! I hope one or more of these spark your interest. (For the projects I’ve already started posting about I might restart posts about those from the beginning to make them more polished btw)

-Mega Man: Reprogrammed, a Mega Man AU comic/show that originated as me redesigning Robot Masters and grew into a full AU

-A Godzilla AU show featuring various kaiju and humans from across the franchise and a universe that actually makes sense

-A Spider-Man AU project of some kind, I don’t really have much in mind for it but I need to build a world for my spidersona

-A Binding of Isaac AU comic, which is basically just me being like “hey what if these guys all lived together in this complex labyrinth instead of just being figments of a dying 5-year-old’s imagination (though they still might be that too)

-Nuclear Throne: Wasteland Wars, a Nuclear Throne AU comic with a concrete story and lots of goofy character interactions (and Tall Bandit…)

-Meta Knight and Dedede: Star Warriors, a Kirby prequel (haven’t decided between game, comic, and show) about Meta Knight and King Dedede’s adventures before Kirby showed up in Dream Land

-A Mario prequel (once again, haven’t decided what to make it) about the battles between Princess Peach’s father King Toadstool and Bowser’s father Morton Koopa (as well as other events in the Mushroom Kingdom’s past)

-A FNaF AU show that aims to, unlike the original games, tell a comprehensible and well-thought-out story (no offense to the original story but it is anything but those two things)

I hope people are interested in these ideas, and if I ever get good enough at art to draw for them or get a job so I can commission artists, I may even be able to provide art to accompany them! I might also do some asks for the characters once it’s been long enough that people care about them.

1:the first one we have is the Synthesizer from the game Half life and they appear in the universe mystery kids as a hidden plot in an alternative universe that is moving between au and for a more grandiose scale

2:the second one is the enemies from the Koopa Squad from Mario led by Bowser who is trying to take over the mushroom kingdom, and so in my mystery kids universe they act as aliens and their world is like a planet like planet mobius sonic's home world

3:on the third one these are mutant enemies from the game nuclear throne (I will say right away that these are not all the enemies and that nuclear throne dead cells hyper light drifter adventure time is in one dimension ooo and the dimensions in this case are in the multiverse mysteryverse)

4:on the fourth we have these galagians you already remember or not the ancient games about space invaders galaga and centipede and decided to add mystery kids there and make the enemies from space invader and galaga living alien bugs and not spaceships or robots, this idea I was inspired by three monsters at once from different franchises one way or another connected with bugs the first is zerg from starcraft the second is tyranids from warhammer 40 and finally arachnids from starship troopers, and yes the enemies from space invader and centipede will be considered as galaga because it is more convenient for me that's all (the design of these bugs is not ready yet this is still a concept art when I draw they will be ready)

5: and the fifth one we will have robots from the game robotron and ultrabot they will be like a reference to the terminator which appears in the universe mystery kids as antagonists

6:and finally robots from the game gray slime (and yes they will not appear in mystery kids)
