Also I hope if I get to do something in heaven it’s pray for reconciliation of enemies specifically in the way where they get stuck together somewhere or on like an unavoidable roadtrip and work out all their issues because I love that and also it’s so funny to watch every time

This is just a little note, because it might be good to put a reminder out there that good things still happen.

One of my students stopped by my office yesterday to give me this:

Inside, the student had written half a novel about why they appreciated me and my work. I didn't read it until after the student had left for their next class.

Then I read it, shut my office door, and cried.

I mean. I don't do this job for the sake of student appreciation -- if I needed that, I'd have thrown up my hands and left long ago. Most students approach courses as transactional, which, fair enough. A few genuinely care, even come to care for what I teach because they like me and how much I care about it. I get a fair few repeaters -- students who take a second class from me because they got so much from the first one.

A few students genuinely hate me and all my works, which for me is hard because I am easily hurt by that kind of thing for reasons too quotidian to talk about. (I'm too old a hand to let it show, of course. It still hurts.)

But every once in a while? There's a student like this. And I cry for joy.

“Happy Father’s Day, Sylus!” she says with a smile, placing three gift bags on the table. “These are for your sons—please make sure Luke, Kieren, and Mephi each get one.~”

Sylus pinches the bridge of his nose with a low sigh, though the twitch of a smile at the corner of his lips betrays the act. “…I built Mephisto, Tesoro. Built him. He’s not technically—”

He cuts himself off with a glance at the bags, muttering, “Gods, the twins would shudder if they heard you call me their father.”

He exhales through his nose, shaking his head as he gathers the gift bags in one arm. “But… they’ll appreciate this. You spoil them, you know.”

Turning on his heel, he walks down the hall and knocks once before pushing open the door to the room that perpetually smells faintly of energy drinks and victory.

“Luke. Kieran. Come up for air... you’ve got presents.”

He lifts the bags slightly with a knowing look.

“And yes, Mephisto has one too. Don’t ask why... Just take them. They are from Amara.” Little did Sylus know that the gifts inside were themed on Father's day too.

aw, yeah, i can do that BUT you need to know that i made this back in 2013 and that post i made about hearing a song from it playing in the year of our lord 2024 definitely gave me psychic damage so please don't judge my taste in music and playlist arrangement based on who i was over a decade ago 😅
