The Thumb Kiss Trope

Recently (like yesterday) I rewatched Wedding Plan and in ep 3 a thumb kiss was featured that was kind of glossed over by us all. Ever since then (like the past 12 hrs) I've been thinking about how I need more of this trope in my life. It's such a good trope and so under-used.

Sure we have different variations of a barrier kiss; My School President used that trope as a running gag up until the last ep. And we see people place their full hands between their lips. TinCan had a really cute kind of transfer kiss featuring Can's hand in Love By Chance, but nothing hits like the Thumb Kiss trope for me.

So why is the Thumb kiss such a vibe for me? Because it's the flimsiest of barriers to prevent a real kiss. It highlights the tension between the two characters, they both seem to be very interested, but it just isn't the right time for a real kiss yet. In my mind that thumb is a bookmark for the real kiss that is coming soon.

DON'T WORRY I HAVE EXAMPLES!

SoloGui from Oxygen the Series. We get their thumb kiss in ep 4. There are a couple reasons Solo does not kiss Gui in that moment; he didn't have permission, he didn't want to push Gui too much, and mainly because he was under the weather. But he couldn't just let the moment pass without a brief romantic interaction. At this point in the series, Solo is really just trying to gauge Gui's interest in him so he can figure out how to proceed.

Of course Gui responds like it's a real kiss, he kisses Solo's thumb too and then they both pull away. In the novel version, Gui is actually disappointed about Solo's thumb being there because he wanted it to be a real kiss (he's never kissed anyone before despite being a popular campus moon). BY THE WAY Nut Supanut from Pit Babe stars in Oxygen and it's a really cute, lowkey series with good communication. I highly recommend it, ALSO THE SIDE COUPLE IN THAT SERIES IS TOP TIER!

NueaToh from Secret Crush on You. Their thumb kiss happens in ep 2. It's not so secret that Toh is in love with P'Nuea, but we soon discover that Nuea is also kind of enamored with Toh. He goes out of his way to hire Toh as a photographer for his sister's birthday party (btw she's a fan of Toh's photography) and anyways, Toh and his bestie Jao are hanging out with Nuea and his friends and they play that good ole King's card game (you know the one! It's the only time we see cards in these series) and Nuea and Toh are dared to kiss.

We know Toh wants to and so does Nuea but Nuea doesn't want to turn his first kiss with his crush into a party game so he literally smirks at Toh and pushes his thumb between their lips. Nuea knows Toh likes him and he's sure Toh would be fine with their first kiss happening any kind of way, but Nuea wants to make sure Toh knows he's kissing him on purpose so he's going to wait.

ALSO half the cast of the Sign are in SCOY and I HIGHLY recommend the series to anyone who hasn't watched it, Billy is PHENOMENAL as Nuea. Saint produced SCOY as well and it's a good mix of cringe, spice, and pretty much all the characters are queer. I just hope you don't mind stalking as part of the plot (I can explain more if you're interested! I promise it's not that bad)

LomNuea from Wedding Plan. Sailom and Namnuea are vibing from Day 1 but Sailom and his fiancée Yiwa have contracted Nuea to plan their upcoming wedding. To Nuea, Sailom is going behind Yiwa's back to pursue him and he's having mixed feelings about that. Sailom is actually just a man in love with his wedding planner and trying to find the best way to explain a delicate situation without sounding selfish or manipulative.

Their thumb kiss happens in ep 3 and at this point Lom is trying his hardest to keep his intense feelings in check. He's parked outside of Nuea's apartment preparing to drop him off and he thinks Nuea is sleeping. He apologizes and places his thumb on Nuea's lips and kisses his thumb. When he pulls back Nuea is wide awake and Sailom declares that he's going to kiss him and they do kiss. Namnuea kisses him back.

Their situation is a little different because they have kissed already but it was a quick and playful kiss and Lom kissed him because he was trying to calm Nuea down (I can't explain it but it does work) and by ep 3 they are both very aware of the other's feelings. This is one of the moments where Namnuea gives in to his feelings for Sailom, which he immediately regrets.

One could argue that's what this particular scene visually represents. Sailom has a clear understanding of how he feels about Namnuea, which is why we can see him so clearly. Meanwhile Nuea is shrouded in darkness, he still needs some clarity.

I tried to go down my list of watched BLs to figure out if any other ones featured The Thumb Kiss and I couldn't find anymore which is TRAGIC. It's such a fun trope. I scream every time I see it and I wish it was featured more. I need more of this specific trope.

Keita Machida - Kurosawa (Cherry Magic Japan)

I absolutely ADORE this man. Attentive and kind and he's ssooo pretty. He is 5'11" (180cm), I want to climb him like a tree, thank you. I would do anything he asked. I have watched this show so many times in the last 6 months since i first watched it, its a little ridiculous. (eepy Kurosawa...oh how i adore him)

Khaotung Thanawat - Ray (Only Friends)

I love this man so much it hurts. I adore everything I've watched him in thus far but there is a /reason/ Ray is pictured in my about me on this blog. I related to Ray so much and his and Sand's scenes....oh wow... I have so many edits and gifs saved in a folder on my computer of this man, I am unwell about it (someone should recreate their dancing in the parking garage scene with me...)

Nut Supanut - Solo/Way (Oxygen/PitBabe)

I adored Nut in Oxygen (is it a little stiff, yeah, but i still liked it) I am a sucker for puppy like characters like Solo and hes just so incredibly Handsome. And Way is just...oh my god. Nut is legit the one of two reasons I started watching PitBabe. (Obsessed with the fact that Way is still kinda Puppy coded. He can take his frustration out on me, I'd consent to that)

Jimmy - Peun/Mohk (Vice Versa/Last Twilight)

I enjoyed Vice Versa and Jimmy immediately caught my attention when I watched it. And now with watching Last Twilight, many of my friends know just how UNWELL I am about this man. Mohk is so kind and attentive and he's so so handsome I cannot handle it. I made so many people watch the clip of him getting angry with August. When he got super quite? Lost my mind. (Look at him...look at his arms, are you kidding me??)

Ja Phachara Suansri - Leo/Punn (Don't Say No/Be Mine SuperStar)

THIS MAN IS 6'2" (188cm) THAT'S NOT FAIR. HE'S SO TALL (i'm a little jealous...) Ja is so pretty and him just throwing around First in Don't Say No like he was nothing? I lost it. The scene in the pool in Be Mine SuperStar where Punn and Ashi are talking and then Punn stands up? I was UNWELL (Punn is also another Puppy coded character and I will forever be a sucker for it)

Perth - Ae/Kanghan (Love By Chance/Dangerous Romance)

When I tell you some weird things came out of my mouth when I was telling my friends about Perth, I wish I was kidding (@darkroseespeon can attest to that). He's so incredibly ridiculously handsome and his smile is absolutely infectious. He's another that I would do anything they asked. (cue to me just repeatedly saying "he's so pretty" as i was trying to find a gif...)

Nat Thewphaingam - Nawin (Laws of Attraction)

I was living with some roommate when I was watching Laws of Attraction and they had a good laugh watching me LOSE MY SHIT when this man came on screen. I was immediately obsessed with Nawin. The bgm, the bloody tank, and the brass knuckles? I was a gonner. Truly in love with his antics and i would give a lot to be under him. (do you see his arms? the lighting? just...HIS FACE?)

Ji Sub - Jae Won (The Eighth Sense)

OMG one, this show is so important to me. Two, Ji Sub is a meal I could eat every day. I don't even have much more to say than that. He's just so handsome and he had such sad eyes... Jae Won, once they're finally boyfriends, is so sweet I just adore it so much. I love this man. (He was so cute in this scene I cant...)

Us Akkarachotsopon - Tay (Kinnprosche)

Tay is fully the embodiment of my never ending delima of do i want him or to i want to /be/ him???? His fashion sense is glorious and I will never be over it. The minute I start talking about it, its hard to get me to shut up. I would give ssoo much to take care of Tay and love him like he deserves. (Where the post that's like "i'll do anything for a boy with big brown eyes" or something like that. Also, this shirt?? I need it.)

Kiseki: Dear to Me

Am I cheating a little bit by talking about all four of them? Maybe. But I have made SO many people who are not into BLs watch this show FOR A REASON. I love it so much and I love all of them so dearly. AiDi and ChenYi's fashion? IMPECCABLE I'm obsessed and want to recreate some of their looks so bad. All their scene once they're finally together??? unbeatable to me. omfg. ZongYi and ZeRui's kitchen scene?? In shambles. SHAMBLES (I have a stuffed animal I named ZongYi cause he's so precious to me...and I want to get one to name AiDi)

So I just finished binge watching Something in my Room and OH. MY. DAYS. It is amazing. I think it might be on my top ten list for best Thai bls I've ever watched.

The cast is stellar! I mean they put their whole actorussy into it! Especially Nut, Plan, and Green.

The story is just on another level. As expected, as it's from the same director who gave us the beautiful gem that is Lovely Writer.

Can we talk about Nut Supanut and Green Phongsathorn for a second. I feel like these two actors are so underappreciated and underused. Like their storyline was *chef's kiss*. I was hooked on those three episodes. These two deserve leading roles, man. They don't even have to be paired together. I just want to see them in more leading roles.

And Took Chanokwanun??? Her performance brought me to tears multiple times. The way she expressed the different phases of grief, the love for her son, that fear of abandonment and being left alone... It was so raw and so real and intimate.

There are so many moments like this in the show where I didn't feel like I was watching a Thai drama. Rather, it felt like I was watching an intimate moment between people. At some points, I felt like I was intruding.

I lost my father two months ago. I still remember the sound of grief from my mother the moment she found out, the sound of my own grief. I am still grieving now. There are so many scenes, so many small moments, where these characters are shown in their grieving process and I saw glimpses of myself in such a visceral way.

All of it was so beautiful and just ugh you have to watch it, man.

Don't get it twisted, it isn't perfect. The editing is kinda choppy (if you want any chance of understanding the plot make sure you watch the uncut version otherwise you will be lost), there is an alien side plot that literally made zero sense, and the ad placements will give you whiplash. For me though, it didn't take away from the story. If anything it was a nice break from the very dark and hard to swallow themes.

I honestly cannot recommend this drama enough it is so good. Sosososo good.

shitty summary: Gui, a barista, meets Solo, a student at his university who enters his cafe as he’s closing it. In one night, the two of them form an unbreakable bond.

grade: 7/10

pros:

- I think the acting was good, especially with the material the actors were given. even though there weren’t many scenes that really showcased the acting, the ones that did were really good. especially nut supanut who really impressed me in the more emotional scenes. so basically the acting is basic bc the writing is basic but when given the opportunity the actors are good.

- I do appreciate bl shows who have very minimal drama linked to two guys getting together, it’s very refreshing when it just happens effortlessly. though sadly this easiness kinda contributed to make the show more boring imo.

- the chemistry was good, though again kinda impeded by the writing which is just super stilted.

- the image quality is pretty lol, there’s nothing outstanding about the cinematography but the locations are very pretty & you can tell it was filmed very well.

cons:

- I feel like the whole drama with solo’s father that is the only obstacle to their relationship comes in suuuper late in the story which completely lessens its impact. up until that moment basically nothing had happened for basically the 3/4 of the story so it just felt like it came out of nowhere & I couldn’t bring myself to care about it. not even talking about the fact that this whole storyline sucks & just frustrated me... especially since it was resolved so easily just to give the show its happy ending.

- this was super boring? like literally nothing happens at all? like I just said the only kinda dramatic storyline happens way too late & the rest of the show is just solo & gui being together and no shade but... they’re very boring. yes I appreciate a show with minimal drama but here both solo & gui had no personality whatsoever, there was nothing interesting about them at all. I’m not saying they’re not cute, because they are, but it’s not enough to carry the whole story across 13 episodes. phukao were a more interesting couple since they both had much more well defined personalities & they weren’t established right away so we got to witness the most interesting part (them actually getting together), but even then they weren’t developed enough for them to save the show for me.

- the fujoshi trope. like,,, no one enjoys it? I still don’t understand why bl writers are still feeling the need to include this type of character, especially when it’s only female character in the whole freaking show. and she ends up with the guy she wanted to be gay... it’s just weird, and it’s not even turned into a lesson where she realizes that it’s gross to ship actual real life people, she gets the man & still continues filming guys for her bl page until the very end... there’s not even characters development to save this.

would I rewatch it: probably not

In the end this sadly falls into the category of mediocre bl shows for me. There’s nothing super bad about it, but there’s also nothing that stands out either & it was just pretty boring.

I know James Teeradon is mainly a singer/artist but fuck his acting skills are high key amazing?? like when you watch GMA you'd genuinely believe he was a girl stuck in a man's body and not simply an effeminate guy.

I watched behind the scene clips of how he actually shadowed the girl who plays girl!Love to copy her little ticks and habits and mannerisms... the dedication to his work is amazing. not to mention how you can FEEL the pain and suffering Love goes through in GMA and even the pain is feminine. it's like the whole damn package and he is so different irl im just honestly shook. this is longer than expected. in conclusion, I love jamyjamess.

Hello Lovely! Right now I'm just really vibing with the series I'm watching right now. I took a little break from BLs for like idk 2 or 3 months and idk as soon as November hit we were gifted some really good end of the year series. Series I genuinely feel excited to watch. We're getting back actors we haven't seen for awhile. Billy, Pavel, Nut, and Kaownah??? OFFGUN ARE BACK TOO! I haven't seen them in awhile and I'm super excited to see them on my TV again.

I've been waiting all year to get some decent action plots and now I have three series. Gangster Oppa has been such a treat. Meen is doing the gangster role well. Love to see Tew actually rough people up and have people cower in fear around him and then he turns into this big sweet softie for Guy. Sad he's quitting the life but whatever makes Guy happy. Also I love Guy, he's the cutest and sweetest boy and I want to protect him forever.

Pit Babe, I still don't quite know what's going on but gotdamn Pavel as Babe is epic. That character was made for Pavel, he lives that life anyway. 90% of his pics he's leather clad, smirking, and straddling a motorcycle. Also the bottom discourse has been wild to see, Pavel is really fucking with people's preconceived checklist of what a top should look like. Meanwhile I'm just enjoying Babe be the world's sluttiest Alpha speed racer. Also IDK if Way is going to be good or bad in the end, but I'm just loving seeing Nut Supanut's face on my screen.

The Sign just started and I'm already obsessed. Saint has produced another banger, but I wasn't worried he did give us SCOY and GAP. The Sign has a bigger budget and they went all out with the production. I've missed Billy terribly and that man is so foine and he is the king of sex appeal. Alot of people felt like there was too much combat in the beginning but I ate it up. I loved all the action. I'm excited for the fantasy aspect. We have some soulmates happenings going on. Babe is new and I'm loving him as Tharn. He's quite pretty with great brows and a lovely beauty mark. He and Billy have great chemistry and I just know they're gonna have us by the neck the whole time.

Cooking Crush started today and I'm just excited to see OffGun have a more comedic series this time around. Off is so good at comedy and I'm glad his character seems to be doing the chasing for once. It's going to be very light-hearted...until the script flips and they have us SOBBING! It's only a matter of time, they have the range and none of OffGun's series stay light for long.

One last thing and then I'll never darken your doorway/ask box again, but I just need to get all this pent-up Way-related madness out of my system so I can put it all behind me and move on!

Inspired by your tags on the post compiling the mind control moments, I thought how this is a great example of confirmation bias and it's really fascinating how differently we interpret things depending on our predisposition to view someone/something a certain way: those ppl who view Way primarily as a manipulative, creepy, irredeemable antagonist (each to their own!) see him using his power on Babe in ep 9 when they're hugging as the sick cherry on top of a moulding cake - it's Babe's most vulnerable moment and Way can't help himself, he's at it yet again, the utter bastard.

Whereas in that same moment what I see - someone who views him primarily as a deeply fucked up, morally confused, painfully tragic disaster - is a man watching the person he loves most in the world (regardless of how we judge his feelings, that's certainly what Way believes) completely break down, sob in his arms, and feel utterly helpless in the face of that pain - unable to comfort him, to make it better, to make Babe stop hurting. He looks positively panicked. And that's partly because of his own lies and secrets and the general complications of their situation, but it's also because he's a trainwreck himself - he doesn't have the psychological toolkit necessary to provide Babe with the solace he needs. So he falls back on the only thing Tony's conditioned him to think he's good for - he feels powerless so he uses his power. It's all he has. It's all he can do. It's such a childlike reaction, it breaks my heart - often when a child encounters someone in distress, that's their exact reaction: stop crying! Don't be sad! They're bewildered, they're hurting now too, and they don't know what to do, they just know they don't like it, so they simply order you to feel better. It's coming from the same sort of place, it's just that Way happens to have the ability to make that order a reality! And maybe I'm grasping at straws, but I think it's important that all he actually uses his power to say is, effectively, 'dont cry, you'll always have me', which, as you pointed out, is a perfectly normal sentiment to express to an upset friend! And even then you can see his hesitancy in doing it. If he really was a terrible horrible no-good very bad boy, this would be the moment to take advantage of Babe, physically or emotionally. But he doesn't. Okay, so the bar is super low, but I don't care - I'm still claiming it as a win for Way's potential redemption!

and because it took me so long to reply to the others i actually got a third ask ijbol

disclaimer i should have made earlier maybe: i didn’t know nut before pit babe, so i wasn’t influenced by him playing way in any way. don’t let my username fool you; i am a hot wheel omegaverse fan first and foremost and a nut supanut fan second.

i have to say i felt so proud as more eps came out and they kept making more and more obvious what was happening with way… because i clocked it in that first scene at the pool table, on second watch iirc. it took so much effort not to point it out to my friend when i watched the ep with her later that i had to shut up so i wouldn’t say anything lol i love when they do things like that hhh

i’m pretty sure that’s the moment i started paying more attention to way too, because he uses his powers on babe

to tell him something completely normal that anyone would just tell to their friends directly. and, to me, there’s only two ways to read his motives there: either he thinks he needs to use his powers to get through babe’s thick skull because he would not believe it otherwise, or he doesn’t believe in himself enough to think babe, his best friend, would actually listen to him and believe him. (arguably you could say he wants to make sure babe goes to him and no one else, which i don’t think is the case, but i will say it here just to be perfectly clear.) whichever his reasoning actually was it made my sad man alarm go off full blast. i didn’t have an opinion on him yet at that point, only found his reactions to the charlie situation funny, so that was my honest reaction without having any kind of preconceived notion or expectation from the character.

and then, as the story kept progressing, he kept using his powers for similar reasons.

yes he still mind-controlled babe in fucked up ways into believing he wasn’t worthy of love, but now, because he doesn’t already believe that anymore, the idea wouldn’t take. it would hurt babe’s feelings hearing his best friend say that, but it was honestly something he had believed at some point, and again way was trying to protect babe in the most misguided way possible.

and then of course there’s the scene in ep 7 after babe learns about charlie being another of tony’s children and i don’t know if you’ve watched it again after way’s reveal, but you can see his thoughts and feelings so clearly in his face. he’s feeling helpless in so many ways and he wants his friend to stop hurting so he knows the only think he knows that works and it’s so fucked up, because it doesn’t really do anything. he only gets babe to stop crying, which doesn’t make him stop hurting, only makes way stop seeing it, and i don’t think he puts that much thought into it, as you said it’s very clearly a childlike reaction, but it is so telling of way as a character and of his state of mind. not least of all because we’ve seen him comfort babe a lot more with things that are nothing compared to this, but here he doesn’t know what to say or do. so yeah, no notes.

you and me anon, you and me. i do think we’re getting a redemption arc, specially with pete’s whole thing toward way, but i’m cautiously not counting my eggs just yet. 

breaks my heart when people don’t stop to wonder why someone that from what we know has the sole mission of bringing babe back home to tony couldn’t have used his powers to either do just that back then or mind-controlling babe into thinking he was in love with him, and instead has spent the last 10 years next to him every day as his best friend. love by itself is neither good or bad, it simply is.
