Had the chance to speak to students from Republic Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic who concluded a 4-day residential camp called Mission X, organised by Youth Corps Singapore. I shared with them the importance of education and how they can kick-start their volunteering journey while balancing other commitments in their daily lives as students. I am confident that the next generation of youth community service leaders will be able to step up and play an active role to help tackle emerging issues and needs within their own areas of interests. #MissionX #YouthCorpsSG #NYCSG https://www.instagram.com/p/B2N1f4MnxuL/?igshid=mqo5u29wf778

I think they are at The New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden getting a tour. The person in the video is talking about the art in the floor tile.

Hmmm.... you might be on to something Anon... 🤔
That intricate tile does seem to match...

Day 25, Saturday July 27, 2019
Saturday morning ferry to Staten Island. The ferry is free and leaves every 30 minutes. It carries with it large crowds - which seemed to disappear when we reached the Island. The ferry ride is not one that is very long but the views from the ferry are great.

Once I reached the Island, I caught bus 44, to the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden. It is one of the largest ongoing adaptive reuse projects in America and is one of New York City’s unique architectural complexes and historic landscapes. Majestic buildings of classic architectural styles are home to exhibitions on historical subjects and contemporary art. As interesting as it all was, my trip was destined to New York Chinese Scholar's Garden. The NYCSG is a compilation of different gardens in China. It is based on Ming Dynasty gardens (1368-1644 AD). All the architectural components of the NYCSG were fabricated in Suzhou, China, including roof and floor tiles, columns and beams, doors and windows, bridges and paving materials. It was serene and had a real zen feel to it - I could sit there for hours in a contemplative and reflective state.

I walked out and sat at a restaurant/cafe across the street, Harbour Eats. I ordered Taco’s and had a bite and enjoyed the space a little more.

I made my way back to St. George Terminal, to make in in time for the 4:00 pm ferry and to my surprise, unlike the subway, it had boarded its passengers 10 minutes prior and had closed the gates - I had to wait another 30 minutes and was terrified that I might miss the improv class that was scheduled next.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The improv comedy class was one, that I have to admit, had been dreading. It was held at the Simple Studios, classes are first come, first served! My sense of humour is not particularly the best, and I am very aware. This class had either been missed or rescheduled, due to unforeseen circumstances, at least twice in the past weeks - I have to say, those cancellations brought with them some sense relief - but there was no dodging it this time - fortunately or unfortunately.
I was the first one to sign up - the rest did not until they saw the instructor or saw enough people waiting around, for more people to sign up for the class - there ended up being 10 of us, minus the instructor, Kimberly Alu. The class was fun - it allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and just be - no apologies - but just be as I would be, as I am - without a pause in my thoughts, with the ability to think on my feet. I may not be funny but I was told by the class, the instructor that my words were poetic - that was enough for me to say - thats something I could possibly further explore, if the opportunity came again - it was comforting. It definitely was 0% fear and 100% fun, which seemed to be the opposite when I initially walked into those doors.

Joined our Youth Leaders from the @nycsg at The SG Bicentennial Experience to remind ourselves of how far Singapore has come and also how we can shape the future for our young people! While we champion the different areas for the benefit of our young people, this engagement allows us to we forge even more partnership opportunities beyond the areas that we represent. Together, we can shape a better future for Singapore and Singaporeans! #nycsg #mccysg https://www.instagram.com/p/B1xLmJaHp8a/?igshid=1lxfc94cv3sn5

During the course of the programme, we were each other's designated buddies. Teten Febriawan, undergraduate in Biology and he can sing our national anthem with much gusto and pride. He hails from the land of my Minangkabau ancestors, Padang, and we enjoyed each other's company. Teten's bright eyed and curiosity has given me a new and fresher perspective to life. He has asked innocent yet difficult questions, ranging from issues of race, religion, minority rights and the lgbt movement. I believe he can create change for his community and I hope he will continue to inspire. I am missing him and his perpetual sleepy face already. Jaga dirimu baik-baik dik. Teruslah berjuang. Our 52 Tales exhibition with @nycsg is one of the highlights of this year's Youth Month and certainly a highlight for our year! Come to Capitol Piazza on 28 Jul at 7 pm and look out for amazing artwork plus we are launching playing cards plus our first ever book in swanky hard cover! I've to thank Marshall Cavendish for supporting us for the book, Capitol Piazza for the lovely venue. I'm also really thankful for the folks at @nycsg for being supportive and cool enough to even agree to this exhibition and the playing cards. It really meant a lot to the youth artists and helped heaps in making the process enjoyable. Such a joy to work with!⠀⠀ •⠀⠀ •⠀⠀ •⠀⠀ #bandofdoodlers #52tales #illustrations #instasg #singapore #instasg #nationalyouthcouncil #nycsg #youthmonth2017 #youthmonth #artexhibition #whitespacebandits (at Capitol Piazza)
