umm i guess my first question is whether i need to say accurate things about the topic for an hour or if i can just sort of bullshit it. lol. so how about i list five things and then say how much of the hour would be bullshit?

crossword construction. this would be 0% bullshit. many a person has rued getting me going on this topic.

french phonotactics. this talk might be hard to get started without a specific prompt, but once i found an in, i could keep it up for an hour. >50% would have to be bullshit (or be qualified with a lot of "my guess is..."es) because i haven't formally studied this and hell i can't even distinguish all the french phonemes. but i could sound very convincing to people who don't know anything about french or phonotactics!

i bet i could talk about murderbot for an hour. 15% bullshit of the "mmm...that's a reach" variety, but most of my theories are i think pretty well supported.

that poem about the ocean i wrote a few years ago. i recite poetry to myself sometimes when i'm upset or have insomnia or just for funsies, and one time i couldn't fall asleep so i tried reciting this poem but got distracted analyzing it and stayed up an hour explaining it to myself. but i wouldn't have been sleeping anyway so it was fine. generally i should be able to talk for an hour about any poem i've written, as a poem is a dense and intricate system for communicating something, and to communicate that something in another way, or to break down the way in which the poem is communicating it, would be pretty involved. but that one in particular i know i could talk about for an hour because i've done it before. this would be 0% bullshit because i wrote the fuckin thing lol.

paintings of light reflecting off water. one of my favorite topics, however it would be nigh on 80% bullshit because i know nothing about visual art except how it makes me Feel. how does it do what it does, and what techniques are at the artist's disposal to make it do that, and what context is any one painting (or style of painting, or artistic technique, or motif, etc.) in dialogue with? fuck if i know. but boy could i make stuff up about it.

It combines all my favorite things: Lee!Dazai, Atsushi's paw hands, collaborating with friends, and absolute mayhem! Nym (@intheticklecloset) is a fabulous writer- and getting an opportunity to collab and befriend her makes this fic extra special in my book ^w^

2.) Girls Night: I adored writing this fic ajlkjarkjeajkrakj It's not often I get the chance to write Shinobu and Mitsuri's friendship, nor do I get the chance much to write something so Muichiro-centric. This fic covered both! :D Getting to write these three having a sleepover and bonding brought me so much joy alejkrakjrekj I just love writing sleepover fics!

3.) Phone Chaos: Lookie, it's our collab! :D I love collabs, can't y'all tell? Alongside that- Spy x Family is one of my favorite anime/manga! The characters are hilariously cute, the story is funny and intense, and I adore these two as a couple so much. Also writing Yor with her face covered in chocolate to go alongside your art with her covered in chocolate is beyond funny alkjrkeakraekrjk

Oberyn wasn't a perfect father, but when you compare him with other fathers in asoiaf he is one of the best ones. But it doesn't mean he treated Obara's mother in good way. It was only one moment but he subconsciously and consciously shaped Obara as person. And I love the parallel. Her mother's tears or her father's spear. Tears as symbol of being passive, accepting bad things happening to you and spear as a symbol of fighting against all odds, about facing every obstacle it takes to lead you to happiness. And spear, as well as Sun itself, is a symbol of House Martell. Obara choosing spear meant she is now part of Martell family, that she chooses to be raised by Oberyn and thus for him to adapt teachings of Martell upbringing onto her. Oberyn wasn't great as dealing with grief himself, so he wasn't able to teach his daughters this, but he knew how to pave his way to happiness despite tragic things happening to people closest to him. Doran himself said Ellaria made Oberyn happy. He let her into his life and was happy with her. But shadow of Elia was always there and his thirst for Lannisters blood was ever present.

Ellaria wonderfully pointed it out when she asked when this whole 'revenge' thing ends. This process seemed to be neverending in Oberyn's mind. It came from his deep love for Elia and her children, undoubtedly, but it damaged Obara, Nym and Tyene.

But after all, their need for vengeance just proves how much they loved Oberyn. Even if sometimes it's better to restrain yourself, it still burns within and it'll always be in the back of one's mind until the revenge is extracted.

Oberyn was definitely a flawed man and a flawed father but it’s fair to state he was one of the better ones. I think like almost all characters in ASOIAF he is shades of grey and that’s why I enjoy his character so much and he is so beloved despite being a minor character!

What we see with him is funny enough something I think we see with Ned Stark - These are “generally” good men, who want to be good fathers and want to see their daughters succeed and they are forever haunted by what occured to their beloved sister.

However that doesn’t stop them from being men in a violently misogynistic and aggressively harmful society. As Ned aspires to give Arya just a bit more freedom than Lyanna had, Oberyn aspires to give Obara safety and protection that Elia didn’t get (That is how I interpreted it btw thus this is more headcanon territory - As we are not outright informed in the books why? Oberyn’s girls are so educated not only intellectually but in martial arts, besides their bastardy)

While both Ned & Oberyn make concessions for their daughters we wouldn’t typically see in this society that doesn’t mean they are perfect and it most certainly doesn’t mean they don’t cause harm.

Oberyn’s actions towards Obara and her mother are point blank period disgusting and vile. I resent the idea that tears mean passivity because they absolutely do not - but that is a clear sentiment that very much exists in misogynistic men and a violently misogynistic society - especially without discussing that Obara’s unlike say Nymeria’s mother was a sex worker.

The likely future for Obara would have been to follow her mother into a very unfortunate life and yet she is saved from it by the as you eloquently mentioned “Martell spear” and her proximity to Oberyn as his daughter - making her “special”, but what about her mother? Why doesn’t her mother count?

I think the cognitive dissonance between love,hatred and fear really show up in Obara’s inherent anger and her desire to see Oldtown burn - this anger can’t be projected on the father who died avenging his sister and loved her so much - so why not the city that failed her mother? Not to mention the inherent shame that was instilled into her in that city by Oberyn (& likely others) in such an important moment in her life.

"Yes, she wants to set the torch to Oldtown. She hates that city as much as our little sister loves it." -AFFC.

It just adds really horrible levels to Oberyn’s actions and cannot be defended and shouldn’t be and it’s unfortunate that those actions will have consequences as you mentioned Oberyn’s eldest girls especially will be marred by the desire for vengeance that he could not let go - just as Arianne, and especially Quentyn were marred by Doran’s actions. ASOIAF is really splendid in showcasing the cycles of abuse and trauma that can filter down through families.

The tragedy is that it really was all out of love and there is so much love really! in all of the House Martell dynamics. So much love and pain and it makes sense! The crimes committed against House Martell cannot be denied. I am still hopeful all my girls will be alright and well by the end of the series 🫶🥹
