introducing: apolline "crookshanks" mcgonagall in limerence

Minerva McGonagall never had children of her own, but that was quite alright, because she had her niece and nephew, Apolline and Francis. They were all she needed by way of the next generation of McGonagalls, a sentiment that was well agreed upon across the board once they had enrolled at Hogwarts. She never expected them to be as much of a handful as they were. Or, more specifically, Apolline.

The Marauders were by no means "the bad crowd," but that didn't make them particularly good, either. And in her fifth year, Apolline, now lovingly dubbed "Crookshanks," happened to fall into their little group, to the surprise of no one. A cat, rat, dog, wolf, and stag. A nursery rhyme waiting to happen. She was perfectly suited to their chaos — she had a talent for trouble, and was a magnet for mayhem.

She was James' courage — she liked to take credit for James having said anything to Lily Evans at all. She was Sirius' warmth — so often was he left cold and flinching from the hollow of Grimmauld Place that Apolline was the only one who could touch him without him thrashing away. Remus' comfort, especially on the wax and wane. And she was Peter's trust; always the first to know of anything and everything that happened to him... Until she wasn't any more (but that's a story for another time).

So it had been quite natural of them to be protective of her when Remus' estranged cousin returned to town. But Romulus Greyback Howell had nothing but good intentions. Or so she hoped.

She should've known better.

Life had not been kind to Romulus. Not when he was a Howell, and not when he became a Greyback. He didn't know much about this magic stuff, but he certainly knew a lot about nature — his was a dark one — and he knew that what he was, was an aberration. Unnatural, but at no fault of his own. No, if it were to be anyone's fault, he'd very much blame his uncle, Lyall, and by extension, his cousin, Remus Lupin.

He'd been with the Lupins that night. Everyone knew what night he meant when he spoke of it, though he seldom did. He always knew that his aunt had married an odd man, with an odd name, and had an odd child. And if his parents hadn't been attending to his sick sister, he might've never been there at all. They didn't want him to catch it, you see. Whatever she had, they didn't want him to have it, so he was at the Lupins.

And then, in the dead of night, the monster came. All teeth and claws and horror, a bloody maw clamping down around Romulus' throat, and he was screaming, and there was terror, and then excruciation. When he woke to a silver soaked bandage and the smell of a strange herb — dittany, he would later discover — he begged to go home. He didn't stop sobbing until the Lupins obliged, until his parents collected him, until he finally drifted off... Under the light of the full moon.

And then he woke again, only this time he'd been the monster, and the horror, the bile invoking horror, it was choking him, because yes, he'd been home, but that meant...

Fenrir Greyback found him in the torn house, clutching a torn body, weeping a torn cry. "It's okay, little cub," he'd soothed. "I will take care of you now." And Romulus went with him, because what else was a five year old to do? He went with him, and, like a shifting creature, he shed Romulus Howell, and became Romulus Greyback.

And then came the day that Fenrir asked of him a favour, a favour Romulus' body thrummed with excitement to agree to, because the only thing he wanted more than his family alive, was Remus Lupin dead.

He just hadn't accounted for one Apolline "Crookshanks" McGonagall being put in his path.

Okay okay okay I need to know everything about Apolline please please tell me any thoughts you have that you’re really really excited about I love her!!

Things about Crookshanks:

Apolline got the nickname "Crookshanks" when there had been an accidental clash in Filch's office. The Marauders had been attempting to retrieve their map — half-finished at that point — and Apolline was on a one-woman mission to get rid of her name in Filch's detention log before the paper made it into her aunt's hands. It had been a bit awkward, at first, all five of them simultaneously demanding what they were doing there. The commotion drew the attention of Filch, and Apolline, without missing a beat, forced the boys into hiding and took the fall for them.

Peter was the only one who knew that Minerva McGonagall wasn't any easier on her niece than any other student. Everyone else would assume that Apolline did what she did because at least the punishment would be softer. It wasn't. Apolline hid the toll it took on her well, though Pettigrew noticed how she winced while she wrote and the bags that never ceased to plague her eyes. Scrubbing everyone's cauldron after a day of potions was murder on the the hands.

"Crookshanks" came about when Peter had silently slid her a note in charms. His messy scrawl was illegible at the best of times, and it took her a moment to form a singular word from the alphabet soup: Crookshanks. She would later find out that he had penned: dear the crook, thanks.

The last time Romulus had faced the full moon alone had been the first time he'd turned. He was terrified of it, but he was more terrified of hurting someone else. So when Crookshanks offered to stay with him, he refused her. He insisted she take herself far away from him, because although it had taken years, he eventually had managed to forgive some of himself for what had happened when he was five at his first turning. He knew that now, at eighteen, with years of experience under his belt, that if he hurt Apolline in any way, he would absolutely never forgive himself. But she made it clear that it wasn't up for negotiation, and he would deny it, but she saw relief there. Remus had the boys, but if Romulus just had Apolline, he would be delighted for the rest of his days.

Apolline was also exceptionally close with the girls: Mary and Lily in particular.

She was one of Lily's bridesmaids.

She couldn't play Quidditch to save her life — her hand-eye coordination was rubbish — but she was James' number one fan (after Lily, of course).

She knew both James and Lily liked each other, but was sworn to secrecy by both, which was completely infuriating, because they could've been together since fourth year for Merlin's sake!

Mary Macdonald taught her how to drive a car. She preferred motorbike rides with Sirius though,

In spite of her finding him quite standoffish, she always made an effort to include Regulus if he was around.

Apolline's father is Robert McGonagall Jnr. He would die avenging her.

Her relationship with her brother is truly wholesome, full of understanding and trust and love. He mourns her still.

Apolline was the first person Peter came out to. She only made joking remarks about Peter's crush on Francis when they were alone together.

She's an extreme empath, and is very protective of her friends, particularly Peter.

She helped the Marauders become Animagi.

They offered to put her name on the completed map alongside theirs, but she kindly declined; it didn't feel right, as they'd been working on it for years before she'd joined.

She didn't ask to join the Order, Dumbledore requested it of her.

She had a crush on Alastor Moody, and would constantly visit her old classmate, Socorro Sallow, in the Ministry to catch a glimpse of him.

Her boggart is Bellatrix Black.

She was considered as secret keeper for the Longbottoms. She declined for the same reason Sirius had for the Potters.

She crashed the Malfoy wedding in pursuit of Cassius Mulciber (justice for Mary Macdonald)

Narcissa was furious. Crookshanks didn't mind, because it was Alastor Moody dragging her out.

Marlene McKinnon painted a portrait of Apolline once. She could barely sit still for it. It hangs in Minerva McGonagall's home in Hogsmeade. Francis always said it captured her likeness better than any photograph could — some deep, personal understanding between Marlene and Apolline — and would visit his aunt regularly, both for her company, but to gaze at his sister once more, who would always smile that little knowing mischievous smile at him.

Cuddles on the Gryffindor common room couch, which will always start with Apolline, and end with all the Marauders. Sirius is often the first to initiate.

Firewhiskey drinking competitions that became tradition at Gryffindor ragers (held after every glorious Quidditch win). Sirius has never lost to Apolline, but she still tries.

Apolline works with Sirius as a free-lance bounty hunter (she wanted to be an Auror but she didn't meet the academic requirement), and with Remus part-time at Flourish & Blotts during the lulls, which is perfect, because she also gets to see Peter, who managed to wrangle a job at Florean Fortescue's Ice-Cream Parlour (they've all got really small low-income jobs at first).

So they're essentially "partners".

When a wolf searches for a scent, it's hard to smell anything else.
