i tagged my DA fic male trevelyan/oc and m/m because the relationship is a major part of the plot but im wondering like

should i have tagged it trevelyan/oc or trevelyan/emet-selch (ffxiv)? bc the former makes it sound like caius is ENTIRELY new when really he’s an emet expy intended specifically to be an au version of emet. but a lot of my FL ocs were/are the same way and read more like OCs. but then like, tagging it the LATTER makes it sound like crossover fic, which it isn’t; to me crossover fic usually involves the retention of both universes and someone getting isekai’d somewhere else and there’s zero isekai shit happening in this fic bc it’s not at all a favored trope of mine.

NIKOLAOS DIAMANTIS ROSSI Nikolaos: Greek origin, meaning “victor of the people.” The name is apt in the context of a pyrrhic victory if you consider the way the Uncharted 4 timeline ends for him, but it was initially chosen because I wanted to steal the name “Niko” from a defunct Star Wars OC of mine that will never again see the light of day. (And because I wanted him to be Greek on his father’s side. In-universe, he is named for his father’s father.) Diamantis: Greek origin, meaning “diamond.” Chosen sonically, but the meaning is apt enough owing to his wealth and the treasure vibes of the Uncharted franchise in general. Rossi: Italian origin, meaning “red-haired.” Only my choice in the sense that I decided to make him a part of the canonical Rossi family (the “Mrs. Rossi” mentioned in passing by the floor manager in the Rossi Estate is his mother). GIOVANNA DIAMANTIS ROSSI Giovanna: Italian origin, meaning “God is gracious.” She was originally a Gianna, but this presented an unfortunate conflict with her younger sister’s name, so I changed it. In-universe, she is named for her mother’s father (Giovanni). TALIA DIAMANTIS ROSSI Talia: Hebrew origin, meaning “dew of God.” I was considering the Greek name Thalia, but realized there was an Italian-friendly alternative, as Talia is the name of a character in an Italian fairy tale. Since the sisters are more immediately associated with their mother’s side of the whole Diamantis/Rossi business model, that’s the one that stuck.

LEON VALERO Leon: Greek origin, meaning “lion.” Flop reasoning on my part. He’s a Leo and it suits him. That’s literally it. However, there’s a quest in-game where V is dubbed “the furious lion” by an NPC, which was a funny but unexpected nod. Valero: Spanish origin, a place name derived from Valero, in Salamanca province, Spain. No reason for this choice other than I needed a “V” name of Spanish origin. (He is mixed—primarily Mexican and Japanese, some Russian—but his mother specifically was a Valero, before he was raised as one of Padre’s boys.) TOBIAS LYNCH Tobias: Hebrew origin, meaning “God is good.” I like how it sounds. End reasoning. Lynch: Irish origin, meaning “hill.” No specific purpose. I knew I wanted a name of Irish origin and it flowed well with the siblings’ first names. SAOIRSE LYNCH Saoirse: Irish origin, meaning “liberty.” Again, no purpose, only sound.

DRAGON AGE

GAVIN COUSLAND Gavin: Scottish origin, derived from Gawain, meaning “white hawk.” I just liked the sound and the Arthurian vibes. Cousland: Scottish origin, derived from the Gaelic form of Absolom, meaning “father of peace.” Not my choice, canon default for a human noble. CAIUS TREVELYAN Caius: Latin origin, meaning “rejoice.” In-universe, his name was plucked straight from the family tree (the Tevinter relative from way, way back—hilarious). Trevelyan: Welsh and Cornish origin, meaning “homestead on the hill.” Not my choice, canon default for a human noble (again).

MASS EFFECT

GABRIEL SHEPARD Gabriel: Hebrew origin, meaning “God is my strength.” Chosen because I love that biblical shit; you already know. Specifically, I thought it would be funny if he was named after the messenger, because no one listens to him when he says the Reapers are coming. It’s funny. Hush. Unintentional, but it also allowed for an in-universe reference to Garrus’s vigilante moniker (Archangel), one he chose—in my personal canon anyway—as a way to honor his human friend (and known proponent of vigilante justice!) whom he thought to be dead. Shepard: English origin, meaning “sheep herder.” Not my choice, canon default. (He sure does herd sheep though, boy howdy.)

THE WAYHAVEN CHRONICLES

LEVI XIAO Levi: Hebrew origin, meaning “joined together” or “joined in harmony.” It’s also meant to be evocative of “Leviathan,” because his father is NOT dead, actually; he’s a god-creature from the Echo World, currently in horror-stasis at the Agency headquarters for his Crimes™, which is much better than being dead. Surely. Absolutely. The Hebrew origin is relevant because his mother’s side of the family is Jewish. Xiao: Chinese origin, written as 蕭, meaning “mournful” or “desolate.” His father’s chosen surname for passing in the human world. His father is not actually Chinese (obviously), but China was his place of origin in terms of his initial entry into the Right-Side-Up and the physical features of his human form are all reflective of this.

{ EMILY VOIDHEART }

Alignment: What would be their D&D alignment? How might it come into play?

{ Neutral Good } Emily tries to be a True Neutral, but she’s not able to. As much as neutral she tries to be as an observer, a part of her unconsciously will take sides. There’s a scale in her head, and she’ll always try to balance it as much as she could. There must be enough amount of chaos and order in the world; too much of either will sow discontent one way or another.

Beverage: What do they most like to drink, and why?

Alcohol mostly, Emily’s been trying this type of distilled alcohol made in Tevinter that she’s enjoying but not know the name of. One type of alcohol that she will not drink is wine, however. 

Co-Habitat: Do they live with anyone? What’s “need to know” before moving in?

She lives in the attic room of a tavern back in Dairsmuid, so really, it’s not a good place for people to move into. Emily’s been wanting to have a house of her own, and she’s working on that-- even though the Inquisition doesn’t really pay her. Emily lived with the owners of the tavern, she pays rent for her room in the form of working security during the most rowdy days of the week. The owners see her as family, which Emily reciprocates.

Decor: What kind of home do they keep? Are there any defining details?

Well, Emily does not have a home at the moment-- buf if she has one, she wants a comfortable one close to nature and away from the center of the city. She’d prefer as little visitor as possible, and maybe a home where it’s friendly to the non-threatening wildlife around it. She’d love that. Close to water and lush forest and the likes maybe.

Escape: What do they do to de-stress? How successful is it?

Em’s not too good with de-stressing, as seen from her hair. Her friends have been saying that she’s pretty uptight and severe because she has no outlet to de-stress. Several people have tried to get her into meditating, but her mind’s too restless for that, always scheming ways to get money with every moment she’s awake. Caius have gotten her into hand-to-hand combat, which helps a little bit, until the point where Emily had to weaponize it out of desperation the moment she fights against Templars and Seekers.

Nowadays it’s all down to the bottle to help her to de-stress. Not the optimum nor most successful way to be honest, but it does the job. Cooking in Skyhold’s kitchen is starting to become a good way to de-stress, too bad she couldn’t do it all the time. 

Fluff: What hits their soft spot? Does anything turn them into emotional goo?

As detached, distant and aloof Emily tries to be, she’ll always be a softie inside. She dies over baby animals like normal girls which is the main reason why she took in the orphaned baby black wolf from the Redcliffe Farms that she eventually names Riptide. Emily loves kittens as well and she thinks her blood pressure lowers the more kittens there are in her vicinity.

Also, Emily’s a sucker for family. Seeing a happy family makes her an emotional wreck, because it’s what she’s always wanted for herself. A warm, happy, family that she could be a part of. She had that once upon a time, but it felt like a dream. This is the reason why she’s very protective of Morrigan and Kieran. Morrigan is such a good mother to her son, and Emily would hate herself if she takes her away from him. Part of the decision why she’s the one who drank from the well stems from this-- her want to keep Morrigan safe for Kieran’s sake.

Also love, and romance, for her in particular. Emily yearns for the person she loves to love her back, a simple wish that she’s starting to move on from. Because of how complicated her romantic history is, Emily gets awkward and flustered when it comes to her own romance. She gets very oblivious as a result, because she’s come to belief that no sane person would willingly love her. Caius is a weirdo, so he fits the bill. 

Leliana loving her back is wistful thinking that would never happen.

Grudge: How bad does an insult go over? Do they hold a grudge long?

Emily has very low self esteem, so insults aimed at her washes over her very quickly. She’s almost at doormat-level when it comes to insult, because she’s used to that treatment. The Trevelyan household was not at all friendly to her in the past, and she’s gotten this same treatment over there. Insults to her friends, on the other hand, will go badly when Emily’s around. She could be as petty as petty can be when it comes to defending them, she doesn’t have a lot of friends after all. Got to cherish the ones she has now.

Regarding grudges, Emily can hold grudges like nobody’s business during the few times she was backstabbed and betrayed. Like, it could be 20 years since then and most people have forgotten, but the woman will still be stewing over it. She might forgive, but she does not forget. Like it’s hard to get her riled up in general, but when somebody succeed in doing that, Emily can turn 180 from nice to spiteful in a blink of an eye.

This grudge and spite were what kept her on the hunt for the Templars and Seekers responsible for the annulment of the Dairsmuid Circle.

Hobby: What’s something they do for fun that might be surprising?

Cooking. People were surprised when they find out that she could cook, but it’s honestly understandable when one knows where she came from. Emily’s upbringing requires her to learn how to cook so she could keep herself alive. It’s a life or death thing, and though she hasn’t done a lot of it in the recent years, Emily still finds the activity relaxing.

The Skyhold kitchen staff receives a big surprise when they found their Inquisitor kneading dough to make Antivan Pies that had everyone salivating. After that they give her free reign of the kitchen whenever she feels like it. Cole said that cooking calms Emily down a bit, and after hearing that from him, Josephine sent out a missive to the kitchen staff to let Emily work whenever she visit the kitchen.

Also, people are surprised to find out that she could forge her own weapons. Emily took a lot of odd jobs to get money before she worked for Tevinter-- working in a forgery was one of them. Thanks to that she has enough knowledge and skills to be able to work with Dagna and create nifty weapons for her companions to keep them safe from harm during their missions. Harritt will always need to keep an eye on them though, these two can get into trouble if they work with no supervision. One time he was away these two created an explosion that shook the castle and had everyone near panic.

Insomnia: What’s their sleeping schedule like? Snorer? Sound sleeper?

Emily almost never sleeps-- it’s a side effect of having struck by lightning. Her body’s chemical is messed up, and she has tonnes of adrenaline rushing through her at all times. It keeps her mind alert which, unfortunately, makes it hard for her to sleep naturally. Drinking alcohol and getting shitfaced helps, but waking up hangover makes her feel like shit so Emily tries to lessen that outcome. This quirk helps a lot when they’re out doing missions on the road-- the group rarely oversleeps because most of the time Emily doesn’t even sleep.

Because of this, her sleep hours are a mess, and she has permanent eye bags ever since she was struck by lightning. It did not stop her from looking attractive though, to some people’s annoyance.

Whenever Emily does manage to sleep, she sleeps like a dead from exhaustion.

Jaded: Do they buy into the “happily ever after” ideal? What’s their standard?

Emily used to buy it in the past, when she was younger and brighter and happier.

She’s just not that person anymore.

Now? She doesn’t care for it.

Kin: What’s their role among their relations? Do they consider others family?

Family is a complicated thing with her. Blood-related family never treated her well until Elizabeth and her husband entered the picture. Found family didn’t end well either with her. 

She yearns for it though, and is slowly opening her heart again to the people in the Inquisition. Dorian is someone she’s come to think as her brother, both in blood and by trial of fire. She cherishes him so, much more than words could say.

Law: What do they think about abiding rules? Are they selective about it?

Yes. Emily’s never done really well with authority figures after her stay in Orlais. Since the authorities shaped the laws, it means they can easily bend it to however it would suit them. Because of that, Emily’s formed an opinion of detesting them and being selective about the rules.

If she could bend them in order to get innocent people out of trouble, she’ll do it. She’s not good with loopholes though, so she gets in troubles for this usually. The Chevaliers had their eyes on her thanks to this, and puts her in their crosshair for the longest time.

Now that she’s got enough power and influence, she’ll try to implement laws when it’s fair and just and works for the betterment for everyone save just a select few. 

Magic: In a magic series or not, are they accepting, or is each instance a shock?

Emily is accepting. She’s lived by the sides of Mages and Templars for years and like in general she’s very curious of them. Dating a Magister is truly an eye opener for her because Caius was very willing to explain and share arcane knowledge with her. This becomes a boon when she joins the Inquisition, because it helps a lot with problem solving a few things in her missions.

Network: Are they connected to the people? How much do they reach out to others?

Emily’s an introvert and she’s actually pretty shy so she has an aversion for big groups of people. Being thrown into the spotlight is her nightmare, unless it’s her own choice. It’s rather ironic because she was a star acrobat in her youth-- but then again, that was of her choice.

Because of this shyness, she’s rather awkward when interacting with people. Especially after the events in Dairsmuid-- she’s distant and detached and aloof and she’d rather not get attached again for fear of history repeating. But alas, fate speaks differently-- Emily eventually reached out to people on her own in that endearingly awkward way of hers.

She’s out of touch-- but Em’s trying. She asks questions, and listens to stories. Cole said listening helps, so she’s following his advice. 

Emily’s gone so long disregarding the voices that asks for help, it’s time for her to listen.

Offspring: What kind of parent would they be? Would they prefer one, or multiple?

Emily would be a doting parent, doting and protective parent. She’s always wanted a family and now that she has one of her own, she would be highly protective of them. And since she’s a softie, Emily would probably be the gentle hand parent of the pair. Whoever ends up marrying her would have to be the strict one or they’ll get nothing done.

One is all right, but multiple sounds good. If she’s only got one child, that child might be lonely. Two or three would be ideal. 

Any amount of kids matters not to her because Emily will love them all the same. Because the parents that she has, had, were nothing but disappointing to her-- Emily will do anything in her power to not be like them to her own child/children.

Pistol: Is this character skilled with a weapon? What’s their opinion of violence?

Emily has come to believe that violence is necessary...but there are also moments where it’s not needed. You just have to find that balance.

Question: How often do they feel doubt? What topics are they defensive about?

Emily feels doubt all the damn time, she’s actually very insecure inside. It’s something that never disappears after being in an abusive environment for so long. 

She’s normally very agreeable with things, as her advisors knows things better than she does, but Emily does have her limits. Everything related to Orlais or her past and blood-family will get her defensive and pissed. 

Also bards. Don’t mention bards in front of her.

Reminder: How are they at remembering daily needs? What falls through the cracks?

Daily needs as in paperwork? Emily pretends that does not exist, to Josephine’s consternation. She remembers meal time though, as Emily is almost always hungry, so she tries to set up her day around meal times.

Self-care in particular is something she has difficulty in remembering. What even is sleep.

Sing: Do they like music? Do they listen often/sing/hum/play songs in their head?

Emily used to like music-- now though, that is a sensitive topic for her. She’d rather have the quiet than have good music, especially one related to Orlais.

Touch: How do they handle contact? Is their personal bubble big?

Thanks to the people around her, and her job, Emily has quite a wide net of acquaintances and connections. Working with Caius lets her have that and more to the point of having underground contacts that she trusts (as much as one trusts crooks anyway). 

There are few that she calls close friends, and even family, however. Emily has trust issues, so even though she drinks with them, and laughs with them-- that doesn’t make them friends to her. She only have a few handfuls, and after the incident in Dairsmuid, there’s even less that’s left for her to protect.

Emily’s not that good at making friends, so she really treasures the ones that she has left.

Upcoming: How much do they think of the future? Do they make long-term plans?

Not at all. Emily avoids thinking of the future. After all, there is a big chance that she won’t even make it through this week. 

Making plans for the future seems like setting herself up for disappointments.

Vice: What bad habits do they have? Is there something they would be ashamed of?

Emily has a tendency (bad habit) to put others before her, which is great in theory, but after the hundredth time it’s doing her a disservice. She always thinks of herself as less important compared to other people, and it’s just not a good mindset to have. It’s not at all healthy. It’s something that she should unlearn in order to be able to grow as a person.

She’s also very self conscious of her scars, as she was not the most graceful person around when she was younger along with being one of the clumsiest fighters when she was just starting out. Even so, it’s nothing to be ashamed of. She’s still wildly attractive to some people even though she doesn’t believe so.

Wardrobe: What’s their fashion style? Do they have any staple pieces?

Thanks to Isabela’s influence, she loves clothes that lets her show off her arms. She’s actually very proud of them. So sleeveless with several undone buttons is usually her go-to when dressing up. It’s giving Josephine headaches because even when given proper buttoned up shirts, Emily will undo them and then roll up the sleeves-- rendering them moot in the end.

She did live in a warm tropical area for the longest time, it’s hard to shake off the habit. Emily’s not really affected by the cold, after all. So clothes are just clothes to her.

X-Ray: How’s their health? Any problem areas? Do they take care of themselves?

No, yes and no. Emily does not really take care of herself, or at least she hasn’t been in the past year after leaving Tevinter. The annulment had her spiral into the depths of bottles of alcohol and with that comes a long a lot of complications. She has an alcohol addiction and because of being struck by lightning so long ago, she has the health side effects of that incident.

As a result Emily has a weak heart, a broken down body, a lame right knee and probably dying kidneys from the amount of alcohol she consumes.

Yack: What’s their favorite thing to talk about? What do they go on about?

Food, alcohol and baby animals. You can’t get her to shut up about baby animals once you get her started.

Zodiac: What’s their astro sign? Does it fit? What would you pick, if it’s unknown?

Emily is truly a Pisces. She’s as sensitive as they come and a romantic at heart. She also has insecurities that just screams Pisces to you, with all the dramatics that comes with it.

2. Does your OC have dreams or nightmares? What are they like? Is there a recurring one?

Caius wasn't particularly prone to nightmares prior to his encounter with the envy demon at Therinfal Redoubt. Afterward, the most frightening recurring theme is coming face-to-face with his own image.

19. If someone was describing your OC to someone who had never met them, what distinguishing features would they mention? How would one identify your OC in a crowd?

Physically, his most notable features are probably his light blue eyes, his bright, toothy smiles, and [insert Cassandra voice here] those cheekbones (high praise indeed, considering the source). For the duration of the Inquisition, the conspicuously shiny armor is also a dead giveaway. However, pointing him out tends to be unnecessary, as he has little trouble drawing attention to himself, Maker help him.

33. Describe your OC’s favorite environment. Urban or rural? Wild or controlled? What’s the climate like?

Hailing from the Free Marches means that he is, of course, partial to the sea. Looking out over the Waking Sea from its southern shore on the Storm Coast was a highlight to him, as was the constant rain (much to the misfortune of his traveling party). He enjoys urban environments when they are new to him, but he tends to tire of them quickly and finds life within walls of all kinds stuffy and monotonous—hilarious (or perhaps eminently understandable) for a noble son of Ostwick, but what can you do? In general, he prefers the wild outdoors, the notable exception being caves because “when has there ever been a pleasant story about a place like this?”

34. What would someone blackmail your OC with? Would they be successful in getting what they wanted?

Most attempts at blackmail would be laughed off, seeing as a majority would either be absurd or otherwise miss their mark as a source of shame. What are they going to say? “We have it on good authority that the Inquisitor ran naked through the streets of Val Royeaux!” Caius would find that hilarious. "The Herald of Andraste is bedding a magister's son!" Yes, and what of it? He welcomes the rumors. However, with the growing burden of leadership, threats made in an attempt to twist his words or create doubt about his motives as Inquisitor would eventually get a rise out of him. He has only ever wanted purpose, not power or authority. Still, Caius is unlikely to make a deal with a blackmailer, and the flipside of his highly compassionate nature is that he is prone to emotional outbursts under pressure. Thankfully, he has a somewhat more level-headed advisor (Josie) to step in before he makes a potentially counterproductive rebuttal.

40. Are there any habits your OC has picked up from people around them? Do they know where they’re from? Does your OC try to stop themselves from doing it?

No, none that come to mind. If he’s mimicking habits from people around him, chances are he’s doing it intentionally and in-the-moment.
