Coal very much is bad for the environment but to say it was a failing industry is a lie. It was still the primary source of electricity generation in the UK until the early 2000s, and was still the source of up to 40% of the UK’s electricity generation until the 2010s, when it was replaced by natural gas (which is hardly much better for the environment).
The mines were closed because it was cheaper to import coal than to give in to union demands for such things as decent wages, functioning equipment, ‘safety standards’ etc. and what replaced them, as with other exported uk industries, was large-scale unemployment. The UK government was simultaneously gutting welfare and social housing spending, and the resulting north-south economic divide still exists.
The largest exporter of coal to the UK was (and I think remains) Columbia, whose coal operations are privately operated by (mostly US-based) companies known to employ paramilitaries to expand their operations, terrorise workers and evict those living on potential mine sites.
