Pokemon Card of the Day #2739: Solgaleo Prism Star (Ultra Prism)
Tumblr media
Solgaleo Prism Star’s goal was to accelerate Energy. Doing this with an attack instead of an Ability wasn’t ideal. It may have been able to make up for that by how much acceleration it could provide: When facing one of those decks that wanted to fill up its Bench, getting 5 or 6 Energy in there at once was very much possible if you could dump enough Metal Energy in the discard pile beforehand. There were, of course, some match-ups where it wasn’t so useful due to that reliance on the opponent, and you did have to draw reasonably well to make the best use of it. The chance at that many Energy at once was potentially worth it if running Metal-types anyway.
160 HP was very good for a Basic Pokemon, and was what you wanted from a Prism Star. The Fire Weakness did cause some issues against the Blacephalon cards and Volcanion, though others like Reshiram & Charizard-GX could still reach that number already. The Psychic Resistance could help if you saw Garbodor or even in some cases against Malamar or Mewtwo & Mew-GX decks. The Retreat Cost was high at 3, so having something like a Float Stone, Switch, or Acerola was a very good idea.
Radiant Star needed a Metal Energy and a cooperative opponent. It let you attach a Metal Energy card from your discard pile to your Pokemon for each of the opponent’s Pokemon in play, and you could place them however you wanted. A deck using this would want a lot of discarding options, such as Professor Sycamore and Ultra Ball, and in BKT-On Professor’s Letter could help make sure Energy was found to discard. The popularity of Pokemon like Dedenne-GX, Tapu Lele-GX, Octillery and the like certainly made it more likely that you’d get a bunch of Energy from this. There were times where you’d run into something like Reshiram & Charizard-GX or Gardevoir & Sylveon-GX that didn’t really need the Bench slots, but most of the time you’d get at least a solid chunk of Energy here.
Corona Impact could let Solgaleo Prism Star get off a big hit. 4 Metal Energy was a bit high as a cost, especially on a Pokemon with 1 copy per deck that couldn’t be in the discard pile, but 160 damage was really good. You’d still likely want to let something like Dusk Mane Necrozma-GX or something do the attacking, especially because you couldn’t attack with Solgaleo Prism Star again during your next turn.
Solgaleo Prism Star was quite useful in Metal decks, especially the earlier ones where the type was filled with a mix of decent but not great Pokemon where you were picking between somewhat awkward forms of Energy acceleration. This one used an attack and was limited to 1 per deck, and yet having so much Energy come into play at once could be game-changing. This was one of the better Prism Star Pokemon for the type. It didn’t get into many Zacian V decks later, however, with Metal Saucer and Energy Switch, along with turn 1 Intrepid Sword, typically being enough to keep those extremely powerful Pokemon going. Oddly, it also had some minor use for its bulk alone, being seen every once in a while as a single Prize Pokemon with high HP alongside Regigigas and Hoopa when trying to stall. The result was a pretty good card, and one that fit more into lower to mid-tier decks than the top ones.

Expanded: Ferrothorn/Jellicent Spread Deck
So, this deck is somewhat-clunky-ish deck where Jellicent (BCR) increases the retreat cost of opposing Pkmns, and Ferrothorn (BKT) spreads damage depending on the opposing retreat cost.
I haven’t updated my decks to UBR era, and I’d say that Power Plant would be the *perfect* counter against Silvally-GX. (At least, that’s until the stadium goes away)
Decklist:
3x Ferrothorn BKT 3x Ferroseed BKT 4x Jellicent BCR 4x Frillish BCR 1x Octillery BKT 1x Remoraid CIN 1x Ditto (*) LOT 2x Tapu Lele-GX GRI
