Endgame

I stopped blogging this drama some time ago because nothing new seemed to be happening. Oh, there was tons of telenovela drama, but none of it was "moving the needle" to quote Meghan. Even the Lady C and Tom Bower books were not very interesting, at least to me. I think they were significant in that they shone a spotlight on the various lies and misinterpretations, which I think helped flip the narrative on these two idiots, but if you've been following the shenanigans closely, as I have, they had few surprises.

I do have posts on the Netflix documentary because those had real revelations. However, I think this The Hill article is the real game changer. The Eye of Sauron has turned itself upon them, so to speak.

Those are pretty strong words, and so are these:

"U.S. national security." Wowza.

What's interesting is that a few days ago, this was The Hill's viewpoint:

Way back in December 19th this was a "you" problem in the eyes of the Washington establishment (which is what The Hill represents), now suddenly it's an "us" problem. What changed?

Well, this IPSO poll came out in the UK, showing that the documentary did not affect royal popularity at all. The Brits are calling it inaccurate and the personal popularity numbers were not affected at all.

YouGov also got positive results for the monarchy.

I haven't seen similar polls regarding the Commonwealth though, but I bet they were done and I bet the results weren't good. The documentary got strong international ratings and the Harkles are going to find out that success is a double-edged sword.

It's going to be interesting to see where this goes. So far, the results are encouraging. Hello, Colonel Kate!

Trooping isn't until June but that got announced in December, which is fascinating.

And Charles' coronation was budget friendly back in October, but it will now be "glorious" pomp and pageantry showcasing UK plc and, no doubt, the Commonwealth.

Harry effed around and now he is going to find out that attacking the family is fun gossip that important people don't care about but attacking an institution that is part of the US national security establishment is a different matter altogether. A lot of people are now going to reassess their tacit support of the Harkles.

It will take a while because no one will admit Harry's Invictus role was axed because of a Netflix drama or internet trolling during the Wales' Caribbean tour, but that will be the eventual result. It will take years and it will be camouflaged as a "reorganization" or "rethinking" of the organization (everything military is now in flux as the establishment analyzes the implications of the Ukraine war) but he's going to be out. Notice that Sunshine Sachs leapt out of the sinking ship way back in September. That was likely the canary in the coal mine.

While there is no simple cure to the threats we face to our democracy, one small change could go a long way towards restoring trust: states should stop reporting incomplete vote totals on election night. This will provoke howls of protest from the news media which is, even now, preparing elaborate stages, fancy electronic maps and complex forecasting models in a race to be first to call the election­—some even going so far as to put a “democracy desk” on their stage­—in order to explain the chaos that is likely to happen.

But “election night” no longer exists and states can get rid of it. Today it’s more like election month. Early voting begins in some states in early October and continues into November and absentee voting has skyrocketed. Some of these trends are the direct result of COVID which shut the country down in 2020, leading election officials in many states to come up with ways to hold an election that didn’t involve standing in line inside a polling place and possibly contracting the virus. For the first time in history, only 30% of voters cast their ballots on Election Day in 2020.

The second reason election night no longer exists is that most states have laws which forbid counting the early votes before Election Day. That is understandable­—imagine the unfair impact reporting an early vote winner might have on subsequent voters. So, most states forbid counting these early votes until Election Day itself. This was never much of a problem when the early vote counted for a small portion of the overall vote. But in 2020, in addition to the large increase in early voting, early voting itself became politicized. These two factors combined to make the Election Day vote a very poor predictor of the election outcome.

This happened because President Trump decided, even before Election Day 2020, that absentee ballots would be the source of fraud against him (although he and the First Lady voted absentee). He convinced his supporters to vote in person while Democrats were urging their voters to vote early and/or by absentee ballot. The election night returns created what became known as “the red mirage”—the in-person votes were for Trump­—the early and absentee ones for Biden. As more and more votes were counted the candidate in the lead changed, creating a fertile situation for conspiracy theorists. In Phoenix’s Maricopa County, election deniers believed that 40,000 ballots had been shipped in from China marked for Biden. They set about looking for bamboo fibers in the ballots­—surely one of the crazier theories in an altogether crazy year.

The third reason to get rid of election night is the prospect of chaos or even violence at polling places on Election Day and the prospect of interrupted or chaotic vote counts. We aren’t even at Election Day and already a court in Arizona has had to step in to keep armed men from establishing a threatening presence around ballot drop-off boxes.

The move towards hand counting of ballots and the many possible instances of chaos in a close election makes it likely that in some instances the courts will have to step in and sort things out­—a prospect that could take some time.

The combination of these factors plus many very close Senate races means that trying to call winners on election night­—let alone control of the Senate­—is a fool’s errand and one that is guaranteed to create even more confusion and suspicion as the votes are counted or the courts sort out issues. Below are multiple charts showing how many early votes and absentee votes were received as of the end of October in states where there is a key Senate race. Of the nine states with competitive Senate races, only three allow votes to be counted before Election Day. In the other six, vote counting could take a week or more. Early and absentee voting numbers are already breaking records, leading analysts to predict an even higher turnout than in 2018­—which broke records for a midterm election. In many states, Republicans are also voting early­—a sign that perhaps the convenience is outweighing the paranoia Trump spread in 2020. No matter how you look at it, election officials who cannot start counting votes until Election Day have a huge job before them, and they will need to do it accurately.

The bottom line? There is no reason that we need to know winners on election night especially when the race to call elections creates confusion and a fertile field for more conspiracy theories. States should resist the hyperventilating of the networks and announce winners when enough of the vote has been counted that the outstanding vote is trivial and cannot change the outcome.

Personality: She is a sassy, witty and bold former popular mean girl, who became humbled after her ex cheated on her with another girl and other events, but still has a lot to learn in order to become a better and more balanced person. She’s also quite ambitious, analytical and a quick planner. On the flipside, she’s secretive, too cautious, manipulative, super guarded, even to the point of hiding shit from loved ones, is “in her head” too much, over thinks things and has some huge himedere tendencies due to coming from a wealthy family.

Aspects of her personality are heavily inspired by Princess Jasmine (1992 & 2019). Her negative traits are inspired by Jafar (1992 & 2013) along with Hades (1997).

Odyssey WIP - sci-fi retelling of Homer's Odyssey, with Achilles/Patroclus mixed in with a good helping of pacific rim style mental interface ships. nothing at all planned for this story so would give me a great wealth of stuff to do for preptober. more exciting to do wtw prompts for bc its shiny and new. would be really neat to see how much of the story i can actually write during NaNo. can keep working on Chaos during preptober and then switch to focusing solely on this for NaNo.

Death Note was published in Shonen Jump from December 2003 to May 2006. The anime aired between October 4th, 2006 and June 27th, 2007. Death Note is two-decades old. Though a well-crafted series, I find it odd that, of all stories, you still interact with this one the most, especially since you focus most on a ship between a character that showed up for a couple episodes and dies and a character that gets—quite literally—a minute of screen-time in the anime. Don’t you find it odd that you have such a strong connection to two barely-there characters? There are plenty of characters in the Death Note franchise, many of which play a more significant role in the story, and yet you chose some of the most forgettable and unimportant characters to focus so heavily on? It really says something about you that the characters you most obsess over are so insignificant and irrelevant…

You also seem to most identify with Mello, a person who, though he does serve cunt—and he really, really does—cannot get along with anyone, has clear anger issues that cloud his judgement, has worked with criminal organizations, has kidnapped people on numerous occasions during his (very) brief appearance in the Death Note series. Which also says something about your character, does it not?

Though I am not a psychologist, I do possess some deductive reasoning and critical thinking abilities. And, most importantly, the ability to research. A study[1] was done that tested for similarity between a person and their favorite characters, as well as why they viewed characters as being their favorite based on certain factors and character traits. During the study, it was revealed that people are more likely to identify strongly with characters of whom they “regarded as similar to themselves” and “whom they perceived as sharing their own attitudes.”[2]As someone who has stated that they are “too similar to mello,”[3] you seem to follow this logic nicely (you’d be great in a lab. I would recommend submitting yourself as a test subject). You see yourself in Mello, a character whose personality consists of being angry and eating chocolate. I can conclude that you most definitely have anger issues (I believe you have also referenced a similar sentiment multiple times in the past) and that you have bad taste in characters. First, you must understand that every part of Mello is second to someone else. He is not the hottest fashionable blonde. He is not the smartest. He does not have the most compelling rivalry, rage, or arc. He is a mid character and I cannot fathom why he of all is the one you seem to favor so much. He didn’t even win for biggest dick or best head. Your own poll results don’t look very kindly upon him. I would think that you like him so much because you are willing to imprint on the first character with anger issues with a sense of style that you see, except, he wouldn’t be the first, would he? In a show where all the characters are fucked up and fashionable, why Mello? I find it pathetic that you would be so obsessed with a two-decade-old show and even more, you like one of the most forgettable and insignificant characters available? For someone that seems to believe that their opinions are correct, you have no depth, poor taste, and I imagine that, like Mello, in a room full of people you would be seen as inferior and second to all.

Following the announcement on Wednesday by Prime Minister Sanna Marin (SDP) and her husband, Markus Räikkönen, that they will divorce, the media has been filled with reports on the subject and speculation about Marin's past and future.

Iltalehti political editor Marko-Oskari Lehtonen writes (siirryt toiseen palveluun)that Marin's and Räikkönen's separation did not come as a big surprise to those who have been listening to the rumours circulating in political circles recently. The split, he says, was generally considered "certain".

Is the prime minister's divorce a private matter?

"It is not," states Lehtonen.

He points out that the prime minister is the most influential person in the country whose every move is monitored, and whose every word or omission is viewed through a magnifying glass.

"The prime minister is the biggest wielder of power in Finland, and any matter that may affect her ability to perform her duties is inevitably the subject of public evaluation—and interest," he notes. "If the prime minister's spouse, who has previously been alongside his wife, is suddenly not there, it raises questions."

Marin and Räikkönen's wedding at the prime minister's official residence, Kesäranta, was major news in 2020.

"Why wouldn't the divorce of the couple three years later be?" Lehtonen asks.

Marko-Oskari Lehtonen points out that Sanna Marin is not the only prime minister whose divorce became the number one news in the country. When other PMs, Paavo Lipponen (SDP) and Matti Vanhanen (Cen) separated from their spouses, it was big news in 1997 and 2005.

Health tax gains more backing

The Uutissuomalainen news group reports the results of a poll (siirryt toiseen palveluun) showing that a growing number of Finnish voters back the introduction of a "health tax".

The National Institute of Health and Welfare (THL) and the Social Insurance Institution Kela have proposed a health-based tax, which would be levied, for example, on foods containing a lot of salt, sugar and fats.

The Uutissuomalainen poll found 44 percent of respondents supported the idea of introducing a health tax and 38 percent oppose it. In a similar poll in October 2021, 48 percent opposed the idea.

Responding the the results, Mikael Kirkko-Jaakkola, the chief economist of the Taxpayers' Association of Finland, considered it surprising that a health tax has such wide support.

"It is quite rare that such a large segment of Finns support rather than oppose a tax increase, since usually all increases are opposed in principle," he pointed out. "It's known that the state economy needs to be adjusted in some way. Perhaps tax increases would rather be accepted on unhealthy food than, for example, on work," Kirkko-Jaakkola said.

According to Tuomas Kosonen, a research professor at the VATT Institute for Economic Research, the high level of support may be due to the fact that a health tax was talked about in a positive tone this spring, and especially the National Coalition Party brought the tax up before the parliamentary elections.

A thousand voters responded to the survey carried out by the pollster Tietoykkönen between 18 and 26. April. The margin of error for the overall result is 3.1 percentage points in each direction.

World's biggest cruise liner

Ilta-Sanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun)was among the papers taking a look at the Icon of the Seas, a vessel being constructed at Meyer's Turku shipyard and billed as the biggest luxury cruise liner ever built.

The ship is scheduled for competition on 26 October of this year, and its first cruise is planned for early next year. Royal Caribbean, which ordered the ship from Meyer's Turku shipyard, showed it off to the media for the first time on Wednesday.

Ilta-Sanomat features photos of the still to be completed, but clearly impressive interiors. The Icon of the Seas is 365 metres long, boasting 20 decks.

Eurovision everywhere

Aamulehti reports (siirryt toiseen palveluun) that excitement over the upcoming weekend's Eurovision Song Contest final, and the performance by Finland's Käärijä, is reaching fever pitch.

A "Käärijä boom" has exploded on social media, the paper says.

Among the postings Aamulehti has noticed are photoshopped images of Helsinki's Lutheran Cathedral decked out with Käärijä's trademark green bolero on the church's social media accounts. The cities of Tampere and Helsinki are meanwhile doing the same with their trams, and the Pirkanmaa rescue service is showing off a fire engine sporting the same green bolero.

The city of Tampere is also illuminating Hämeenkatu street and the Tammerkoski rapids with green lights.

Boleros have also been seen added to municipal coats of arms and landmarks. Finnair CEO Topi Manner joined in with a photo of the more familiar blue and white wings of one of the company's airliners wrapped in a green bolero.

The Eurovision frenzy has not gone unnoticed by the nation's parties either. Aamulehti reports that several have modified their own logos to show support for the Finnish entry.

HijiTae Favorite Moment Poll [Results]

Here are the results for the HijiTae Favorite Moments poll, which closed on October 31:

Thank you to all those who voted! It was hard to pick just one moment. Hopefully, we’ll have more participants next time since I know there are more fans out there, judging by discussions I’ve seen.

The Yagyuu arc took the lead and won first place in the end. This is the first manga canon moment for Hijikata and Tae, and it’s amazing that it happened so early. The two of them have both a funny and serious conversation together. Tae felt comfortable confiding into Hijikata, who, in turn, believed in the goodness of her heart. That’s a promising start. Also, bonus points to Hijikata for saying, “No means no.” Always an important message.

Second place goes to the Timeskip arc, which gave us the official, canon, one and only hypothetical son of Hijikata and Tae: Togoro! We got a name and everything. He’s inherited his papa’s bangs, too! It was quite a surprise when Tae revealed that Hijikata was actually the father of her child (which still would’ve sent Shinpachi into a screaming rampage). Sorachi really blessed us with this one, even if Togoro turned out to be part of the wart invasion. Still, few other ships get this sort of thing. In fact, the only other example I can think of off the top of my head is Gintoki and Tsukuyo with Dia and Block. It’s nice of Sorachi to give us rare pair shippers a moment like this one.

Third place goes to the Underwear Thief arc, which is the anime’s first canon moment. This is the moment that got me shipping them before I knew of anything else. Hijikata and Tae are both considered scary people, so it’s natural and not impossible to imagine them as the scariest couple in Edo. They also command a great deal of respect from others and are natural leaders with many rallying around them, by choice or duty. This particular moment put them in a shoujo anime-type scene complete with bubbles, as they discussed the most effective torture methods. Now that’s a scary couple, indeed.

Fourth place is the Soul Switch arc, and I find that many people still misunderstand this scene. Technically, Tae was surprised by Gintoki’s body taking her hand, but it was Hijikata’s soul who charmed her with his style of romance instead of turning her off like Gintoki’s flirting ultimately did. Hijikata has shown he has a way with words, as we see in the Penpal arc. Interestingly enough, it’s Hijikata who first comes up with the idea of romancing Tae to get quickly her away from the monstrous cat. Even Gintoki is shocked, and then reprimands Hijikata for taking it that far with this exchange:

Gintoki: “The hell do you think you’re saying using other people’s bodies?!” Hijikata: “This is the fastest way to break those two apart, isn’t it?” Gintoki: “It is not!!! Imagine all the shit I’ll have to deal with once I get back to my regular body!!”

At least, we got to see an image of Hijikata and Tae in a romantic exchange in body and soul, but in very odd ways. Tae was totally ready to consider Hijikata as a suitor with salary comparisons being first on her list (because she already knows the stress from dealing with debt), and there is a clear winner there.

The Popularity Poll arc didn’t receive any votes, maybe because they were facing off in “battle,” so to speak. However, it remains a fun episode, plus it’s interesting that Sorachi chose the line-ups based on how much each character relates to one another.

What’s most surprising of all to me is that the Farewell Shinsengumi arc moment didn’t receive any votes, either. It features a quintessential OTP moment: one half of an OTP getting angry when someone tries to hurt the other half. Whenever other ships (either in Gintama or other series) get a moment like that, people go ballistic in an excited way, but most of fandom ignores this part and focuses on Gintoki punching the Shogun instead. Yet, Tae’s speech and Hijikata’s reaction, both of them risking so much, remains important.
