Ch 5: Sparring Round I: An Essential Guide To Feinting

Chapter 5 Preview:

"I wouldn't make a habit of standing still at all, if I were you." Kirk tittered wickedly before lunging abruptly, catching his First Officer in unawares with a swift whip of heel locking about Spock's calf. The Vulcan's knee began buckling from the unexpected movement, causing him to stumble momentarily before Jim bolted back out of reach again. Spock could only glare and inform tersely: "In the practice of Suus Mahna, it is customary to bow to one's opponent prior to any official engagement."

"In sparring?" Jim guffawed. "Is that what you think some unknown, hostile alien is going to do when they confront you in battle, Mr. Spock? Politely bow before moving in to throttle your neck?"

" –- Captain must we -- "

" –-  Jim –- "

The Vulcan hit the mat with a thud, the human pressing him flush against it with a gleeful look of triumph. Spock's impassive face revealed no reaction to the human's radiant smile as he commented:

"If you are quite finished, we shall begin the round –- we have become sufficiently warmed up, albeit in a rather rudimentary and primal fashion lacking form and decorum."

"Excuse me?" Jim baulked, appalled at having both his success dismissed as a "warm up" before the "real" round while simultaneously having his First Officer read his form and approach.

"Pardon me a moment," Spock suddenly excused himself, gracefully walking from the room and leaving Jim fuming and stewing over it. Warm up . . . 

He was about to crack Spock off a piece of his mind when he came back, ready to pounce as he heard the Vulcan's gentle footsteps nearing. But Spock returned having changed into the Starfleet issue bright red yoga pants sans shirt and whatever plan, rage or thought Jim had held onto was swiftly swept away.

Summary: Captain Kirk and First Officer Spock grapple with what to do about the undeniable fresh brewing chemistry developing between them as they begin to grow beyond a command team, blossoming into a promising friendship at the start of their first Five Year Mission together.

Spock and T'Pring have grown increasingly distant post his accepting a third 5-year mission with Starfleet, and the Vulcan finds himself struggling under the weight of the full force of James T. Kirk's charm -- on a ship travelling the outskirts of known space, there were few places left to hide from it.

All things considered, he should have known better than to have agreed to become the Captain's sparring partner.

This is a follow up to my fanfic Made of Sun/Tor T'Yel (this story takes place simultaneously, filling in some gaps.)

He isn’t pleased about wearing Sam Kirk’s hand-me-downs, and he also vehemently disagrees that there is any likeness between himself and his snowclone.

(I feel you Jim, I too was born in the snow. Though we have polar bears, where I come from.)
