He was already boiling and he hadn’t left the trailer, but better sweaty than exposed.

“You ready?” he asked at the door, strapping on his moto helmet.

“We’re driving to the airport not into a bomb-blast fallout zone,” Billy muttered, “What the hell are you wearing?”

“The only direct flight to Seattle leaves at noon and somebody nixed getting to the airport seven hours early.”

“I’m not leaving at dawn for a twenty minute drive.”

“You want me to drive in peak sun hours, you get this. I’m one more sunburn away from being a full-body melanoma.”

“You look like Lawrence of Arabia fucked the Elephant Man.”

“At least my pants cover my goolies,” White snapped back, walking out of the door to the scooter.

Billy scowled, and tugged at the hem of his short-pants. Pete insisted Billy must be “in character” from the moment they got to the airport, including full costume.

“If you’re this much of a baby about the sun, how the hell did you survive living in Los Angeles?”

“Very. Carefully,” White blurted, “Now get on the damn bike.”

“Then why the hell did you move to the middle of the damn desert?”

White furrowed his brow, “I wasn’t making a lot of well-thought out decisions back then, ok?”

He mounted the scooter and ran through the final checklist, “Got the plane tickets? Your ID papers? The conference invitation?”

“Yes. Yes. Yes,” Billy confirmed, “And I shut off the propane tank, the water filter, the generator—”

“Except the sign, right?”

“The neon sign is on a timer,” Billy grumbled

“Damn right it is.“

Billy strapped into the sidecar with their luggage on his lap – a single enormous duffle bag with three days of ‘costume changes,’ enough branded ConjecTech gimmies to win friends and influence conference-goers and their ‘invention.’ He craned his neck over the duffle, “Why do we even have this weird military bag? It’s gigantic. I bet I could fit inside it.”

“You did.”

“What?”

“Nevermind,” White mumbled, flipping up the kickstand, “Let’s go.”

The airport was the first public arena to test Billy’s new identity. A dress rehearsal for the conference itself with full wardrobe and make-up. Check in plus three hours in flight to be ‘in character,’ which really was just Billy how he usually was with no swearing, smoking, drinking and obvious self-abuse (not that Billy did that sort of thing in public, of course).

“I’m gonna be cold on the plane,” Billy whined, picking at the hem of his shorts.

“Ask the stewardess for a blanket,” snapped White, eyes locked on the back of the head of the guy in front of him in line for the check in to keep from hauling off and whaling on his junior partner. He wished he could believe Billy was just being little too “in character” at being an annoying 11-year-old.

“Flight attendant,” corrected Billy, “It’s the preferred term since 1973 when the Airline Pilots Association Stewards Division renamed itself the Association of Flight Attendants and –”

“Waitress in the sky,” White asserted, indicating the discussion was over, and stepped forward to the desk.

“One bag to check for the noon flight to Seattle.” White said, scooting the paper tickets to the attendant behind the desk, flashing his TV host smile. The charm assault was severely undercut by the goopy slime residue over his face and hands.

“You really need to reevaluate your attitude towards the service industry, White,” Billy continued unabated, “Or your internalized misogyny against women in the service industry–”

She swiped a few keystrokes at her terminal, tied a tag on the duffle and placed it on the conveyor belt into the unknown.

“Do you think you’re fundamentally better than her?” Billy stabbed his finger at the check-in attendant.

“Shut the fuck up, Billy.” White said out of the corner of his mouth, trying not to catch the attention of the woman. She looked up anyway.

“I’m sorry, Miss,” Pete cooed, smiling apologetically, “My son is kind of an asshole.”

Billy crossed his arms.

“He’s at that awkward age,” she said amused before adding conspiratorially, “But he’s awfully cute.”

“Hear that, Billy?” Pete said under his breath, “You’re in.”

Billy glowered harder. It was going to be a whole week of this shit.

She printed out their boarding passes, slipped them into paper folders and handed them to White with a smile, “Gate B7. Turn right after the metal detector and you’re right there. Have a pleasant flight.”

As they walked off, White made a mental note to never father any children.

They had to pass through a single metal detector before reaching their concourse. The line was about twelve deep. A security officer with a face like a basset hound stared blankly at a monitor, popping cashews into his jowly mouth.

“Remove all metal items, place them on the tray,” he said at regular intervals, mechanically as the words had lost all meaning to him.

“This line is getting on my tits,” Pete decided after less than a minute of standing still.

“What are you talking about?” Billy was legitimately baffled by most of Pete’s protests.

“I don’t want to go through a metal detector. I’m skipping it”

“You have to. It’s a rule. Everybody has to,” Billy objected, on behalf of no man being above the law and the spirit of democracy.

White waved his arm to the security guard. “Hey, fella! Hey!”

Officer Basset Hound slowly turned his face to the commotion, his stare-cashew-remove-metal-items pattern upset.

“I’m an albino,” White pointed at his hair, “I can’t be x-rayed because, um, I’ll explode. Probably.”

Officer Basset Hound blinked again. Thought. Decided it wasn’t worth arguing. Waved him through.

“Sorry. Sorry. It’s just that I'm allergic to rays. All rays,” Pete shrugged to the rest of the suckers still waiting in line as he walked up and around the detector.

Billy had seen White pull an act like this and get away with it at every inconvenience life had thrown at him. He couldn’t get mad or be impressed after five years. Soon enough, Billy reached the front of a line, like a decent human being who believed in fairness.

“Remove all metal items, place them on the tray.”

He dropped his keys and a tiny pocket screwdriver and some change in the tray and walked through, following the goddamned rules. The metal detector lit up and whooped. Billy walked back.

“Remove all metal items, place them on the tray.”

Billy patted his pockets. Nothing. He shrugged.

“Remove the item and place it in the tray,” the security guard repeated, pointing at Billy’s hand

“It’s a prosthetic hand. It’s attached,” Billy tugged symbolically on his wrist.

“I’m not trying to smuggle it through. It’s right here,” Billy waved his hand.

Glumly into a PA, “Need a pat down on a kid with a metal hand.”

Billy looked beyond the barrier to see White with a fresh coffee and a cruller, giving him a thumbs up.

The guy called him a ‘kid.’ So, the disguise was working. Billy was passing!

Billy decided this pat-down he was about to be subjected to was somehow White’s fault for ditching him. White could have talked security out of a search if White gave a shit about anyone but himself. Bastard.

A female officer arrived on the scene with a metal-detecting wand. Billy was pulled to the side of the metal detector, but still in plain view of the line. She knelt down before him, her face at his eye level, and put on a pair of rubber gloves. She slowly ran her hands down his chest, pressing hard, and down the sides of his arm. She stoked slowly back and then repeated the action with the cold stiff wand.

As she rubbed down the side of his thigh, along the hem of the shorts, her eyes met his one. Oh god.

“I am so, so sorry,” Billy stammered.

“It’s a massive imposition of civil liberties to have metal detectors at all,” Billy fumed, still red-faced.

“Felt up at the airport,” White suppressed a laugh while biting into his cruller, “An important milestone in a young man’s life.”

Billy wacked him in the knee with the back of his metal hand. White stumbled and dropped the cruller.

“Yeah, I deserve that,” White shrugged.

“So far this ‘brilliant disguise’ you came up with just exposes me to repeated sexual humiliations,” Billy observed clinically, “Best case scenario, it’s planted the seeds for a life-long fucked up fetish. Worst case, it’s bound to dredge up some long-suppressed abusive memory that happened when I actually was eleven.”

“What happened when you were eleven.”

“Plenty. But no incidents of having my plums manhandled by a minimum wage worker in front of an audience as far as I can remember.”

“How would you know if you’d suppressed the memory?”

“Exactly,” Billy agreed with finger in the air.

“Need any Grishams?” Pete nodded sideways to the newsstand they passed as they approached their gate, “It’s three hours to kill in flight.”

“I’d rather have a stiff drink,” Billy muttered.

“I’m gonna get a Spy and a Mr. Goodbar,” Pete said, making a beeline for the magazine racks. Billy followed with less enthusiasm.

“Is it hot in here? It feels hot in here,” Billy said, pulling on his collar.

“Don’t you dare pit-out that suit. It’s the only one we got and we can’t afford the dry-cleaning.” Pete said without looking over, flicking through the music mags on the top rack.

“Why am I so hot? I’m dressed for business on top but I’m a pole-dancer from the waist down,” Billy fanned himself with a Movieline.

“You’re just anxious. Relax. Everything’s working out great.”

“You’re right, I guess,” Billy shrugged and reached for an issue of The Economist with a glowering Boris Yeltsin on the cover. Pete slapped Billy’s hand away. An eavesdropping woman at the end of the aisle clucked her tongue in disapproval.

“What was that for?”

“You’re supposed to be 11, chucklehead. Go for the Disney Adventures or Nickelodeon Magazine,” White demanded, “Find a frickin’ Zoobooks for all I care.”

“I’m a kid but I’m still a genius,” Billy protested.

“Split the difference. Get an OMNI, ya big nerd.”

Billy scowled but did as he was told.

“I didn’t think I’d be this shaken, y’know… lying,” Billy said sadly.

“It’s like learning to speak another language. It gets easier,” White said, opening a RAY GUN with Urge Overkill on the cover.

"My mother told me that the guilt from telling lies calcifies in your stomach and when you're dead the coroner cuts you open and it all spills out like aquarium gravel. Like a shark that’s eaten a lot of plastic bags.”

“Your mother had an interesting approach to parenting,” White observed absently, turning the RAY GUN magazine upside-down to figure out where the next paragraph started.

“But it’s not even technically dishonest, really, what we’re doing,” Billy justified, “because I was a boy genius and I’m just delaying relinquishing the title. It’s overstaying a student visa.”

“Spin it any way you have to,” White said, completely distracted by the cutting edge of art direction. He turned the magazine the other way, “Is it like this? Jeez, I’ll never know what else the Boo Radleys had to say about multimedia.”

“It’s ultimately to create something good. Like, we’ll get more clients for our science business and then we can quit our day jobs and invent things full time,” Billy free-associated, still sweating, “We’d be able to think as a career. And get health insurance! It’s insane that neither of us has health insurance or has been to a doctor or dentist in years. 30 percent of adults over 65 have no teeth. ”

White shot Billy a look. It was usually hard to get him to shut up, but this was a bit much.

“Especially me. I mean, I lost an eye and a hand and never went to a physical therapist or an ophthalmologist about it. I had to figure out how this dumb robot hand works on my own. That’s just insane! You said I had already been to a hospital but I don’t remember it, which-indicates-bigger-problem-that-I-have-a-nine-month-to-possibly-a-full-year-gap-in-my-memory-which-really-should-have-made-me-see-a-neurologist-at-the-very-least. That’saclearsymptomaticindicationofatemporallobetumorortheresultofaheadinjury – seriousconcussion,skull-fracture – whichI’mobviouslypronetosufferbecauseofmyuniquegeneticmaladaptation. White was getting really irritated and RAY GUN ’s review of the Sylvian/Fripp collab album was not distracting him enough to block it. He turned, prepared to give Billy an earful when saw Billy’s eye roll back into his head and he started trembling violently and collapsed while hyperventilating.

White dropped to his knees and propped Billy’s head up. He smacked Billy hard across the face, “C’mon, Billy! Snap out of it!”

The same concerned woman gasped and screamed, “Child abuse.”

“He’s having a freakin’ seizure, lady!” White shouted.

“Not… a... seizure,” Billy gasped, still shaking, “Retained consciousness throughout... Lack of muscle rigidity... More likely a panic attack or –”

White smacked him again. Billy wheezed and coughed.

Billy hoarsely continued, “Panic episodes vary more in presentation but are longer in duration than a seizure. Seizure presents with anxiety, but progress to the more classic physiological symptoms of –”

White smacked him again.

“STOP FUCKING HITTING ME, YOU MORON!”

“Ok, you’re back.”

They found an empty corner of the smoker’s waiting area behind a column. A large pedestal ashtray largely concealed Billy from view as he sucked on a Marlboro Red like he was drowning.

“I shouldn't have put so much on you at once,” White shook his head, “Pulling off a multi-part identity fraud AND forcing you to quit smoking.”

Billy just smoked and looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows at planes taxing on the runways. Pete pulled his cardigan up over his head and kept his back to the glass to guard from any sunlight pollution on his neck.

“It’s not fear of flying that triggered it, right?” Pete asked.

Billy shook his head no and smoked.

“I mean, you flew out for the TV tapings and that was fine.”

Billy nodded and smoked.

“Are you…” Pete started, still searching Billy’s face for emotional cues, “Nervous about being in front of ‘the public’ again?”

Billy screwed up his mouth while stubbing out his cigarette, “I guess?”

“We’ve been on our own for a while. Like we’ve been in exile or something. So it’s gotta be a shock to be out again.”

“We don’t do much but we have lives. We see people,” Billy counter-argued, “We’re not isolationists. We’re not the Unabomber.”

“We could be,” White offered, “They don’t know who it is.”

“We don’t have the discipline,” Billy dismissed, “Or the work ethic.”

“Why go to all this trouble?” Billy asked, “This is more effort than I’ve seen you put into… anything.”

“Because we belong at that Science Conference.”

“We’re really not scientists.”

White looked hurt, “Do you really think that you’re not a scientist?”

“Right now, no,” Billy said sourly, “I’m a dishwasher wearing hot pants”

“You’re a genius, Billy. We just need to get more people on board to find the best venue to show off what you can do.”

Billy felt even worse. Pete’s blind faith led to disastrous consequences. He couldn’t afford to lose another eye or hand.

“I have total faith. I know we can pull this off. And if I’m wrong and we can’t? I know we can bounce back,” Pete said, glowing with confidence and stupidity in equal measure.

Billy shook his head in amazement, “How do you do it? Every punch to the gut you just roll on.”

“I’m a Teflon pan, Billy,” Pete said, tossing his hair back, “Shiny, shallow and nothing sticks to me.”

“And you cause cancer,” Billy added.

“Never proven conclusively in a court of law,” Pete grinned and shot double finger guns, “Take it up with my lawyer.”

The PA announced: “Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. This is the pre-boarding announcement for the 12:10 direct flight to Seattle. We are now inviting those passengers with small children, and any passengers requiring special assistance, to begin boarding at this time.”

Pete pointed at Billy, “That’s our cue, pally.” Billy shrugged and flicked some loose ash off his lapel.

As they walked to the gate, Pete nudged him. “Look on the bright side. They’re totally gonna give you your own little plastic pilot’s wings.”

Straining to remembering what going to the airport was like before 9/11. Security was casual and you could go to the gate even if you didn't have a ticket. Still had to walk through a metal detector, but they let you bring pocket knives and water though. No taking off your shoes bullshit (that started in 2003)

2nd toughest to remember: what going to the airport was like before smartphones. You had to talk to a lot more people at desks and your ticket was a physical object made of paper.

And, of course, you could smoke everywhere.
